Heat transfer through dry and wet Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) summer and winter midback fur samples was studied in a wind tunnel. Calf fur samples were from June, August and March. Adult fur samples were females from August and March. There was no evidence for increased heat loss from lightly wet fur relative to dry fur. Calm air conductance decreased for calf fur (P’s < 0.05). Adult fur also decreased, however, the

In accordance with prevailing conceptions, the quantity of the discount is perceived as being the amount of monetary compensation the candidate building contractor is willing to forgo for the sake of emerging as the winner of the tender. The text argues on the contrary that the discount is an objectively measurable magnitude. Specifically it is equal to the algebraic difference of the absolute surplus value that could be appropriated by the public works contractor

Impaired tendon function contributes to substantial declines quality of life during aging. Aged tendons are more likely to undergo spontaneous rupture, and the healing response following injury is impaired in aged tendons. Thus, there is a need to develop strategies to maintain tendon homeostasis and healing capacity through the lifespan. Background: The aim of this study was to assess the height of nonunion formation injuring the ulnar-side finger flexor tendon, the positional relationship between the hook of the hamate and little finger flexor tendon was evaluated on CT scans. Methods: The subjects were 20 healthy patients (40 hands) (14 males and 6 females, mean age: 28 years old). Their hands were imaged in extension and flexion of the fingers on CT. The position of the little finger flexor tendon was determined regarding the height of the hook of the hamate as 100%. Results: The heights of the flexor digitorum profundus te

Aims: Tendons are crucial for optimal muscle force transfer and subject to changes with aging which may impair func- tional ability of elderly individuals. Achilles is the largest and the strongest tendon in the body; therefore it is an excellent site for the radiologic investigation of aging of tendons. Sonoelastography (SE) is a new ultrasound-based imaging technique that provides information on elastic properties and stiffness of tissues. The aim of our study was to investigate the age-related alterations in Achilles tendons using SE. Material and methods: Forty five geriatric (age≥ 65 year

A practical project is taken for the example to analyze the application of frequency method in the effective prestress test of external prestressed bridge. In the process of solving the dynamic differential equation of tension cable, the effects of boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of external prestressed tendons are analyzed. The analysis results show that the fundamental frequency of the prestressed tendons under fixed boundary condition is higher than that under hinged-support support boundary condition, and the relative variance decreases with the increase of tensioning force.

ABSTRACT:We investigated the possibility of an inherited tendency to faint by studying 30 consecutively referred well children with vasodepressor or vasovagal syncope. The family history of each patient was reviewed for syncope and for 24 cases was compared with the family history of the child's best friend. None of the best friends had syncope. 27/30 cases and 8/24 best friends had at least one first degree relative with syncope (p < 0.01). Of the 8 best friend controls with a parent or sibling with syncope, the mother was affected in 7; 4/7 of these mothers had first degree relative(s) wi
