The threshold of sensitivity to movement could be governed by mechanisms that are sensitive either to change in spatial position, or directly to the movement itself. The use of spatially complex patterns (random-dot patterns) has been suggested to eliminate the former strategy allowing examination of the movement detecting mechanisms in isolation. By means of such a technique, thresholds for directional judgements were determined for patterns which underwent either a simple displacement or a shearing displacement. Thresholds for shearing motion were found to be around one half of those for sim

The technique of optical fiber grating with high tensile strength, small size, and light weight has been widely used for temperature and strain measurement. The two FBG sensors are encapsulated in one flexible arched-beam slice, while FBG sensors are separately located in up-down position of one flexible slice. Abstract One of the basic criterion for safety evaluation of structures erected on embankment or sliding slopes is relative horizontal displacement at different elevations. Relative horizontal displacements beneath ground surfaces are performed with inclinometer measurements. Investigations were performed with two inclinometer columns 14m height embedded in Warsaw Bank Slope. Abstract:
The objective of the project was to develop a numerical model than may be used to predict the wrinkle formation and post formation behavior of a pipeline considering the effect of soil confinement and define the specifications for the development of a comprehensive wrinkle integrity assessment process. The result of this research is the development of wrinkle assessment techniques that could be used directly or could be used to codify maintenance guidelines. This project focused specifically on the pipe soil interaction modeling wrinkle formation as a result of the relative movement of the pip

Abstract:
Migration is one of the strategies used by populations to adapt to natural shocks and also to respond to economic policies. Climate change will probably have an impact on the productivity of factors and on the health of the population of the Latin America and Caribbean region, triggering migrations. In addition, policies aimed at reducing emissions (like carbon taxes) will change relative prices and the remuneration of factors and, in turn, will alter the allocation of labor between urban and rural areas. This paper explores the potential quantitative relevance of those population movements us

Abstract:
The seismic behavior of a RC pile with a diameter of 0.25 m subjected to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading was investigated using a shake table experiment that was conducted at the University of California, San Diego by Professor Ahmed Elgamal and Dr. Ahmed Ebeido (Ebeido and Elgamal 2019). A sinusoidal motion was applied at the base of a model that was inclined by 4 degrees. The loose and dense sand layers liquefied during the test, resulting in a permanent lateral spreading displacement of approximately 0.4 m (Figure E1). The pile was subjected to the combined effects of inertial loads

Describes an algorithm is developed for deducing the longitudinal or axial strain from geometry pig measurements of a laterally displaced pipeline; often caused by geohazards. The development is limited to those lateral displacements of the pipeline that results in a predominantly transverse loading; i.e., the induced transverse component of the loading is much greater than its axial component. The emphasis is upon evaluating inelastic straining that accompanies large lateral displacement of the pipeline. The induced extensional strain is found to vary linearly with the change in curvature of

Tall, multistory, buildings are becoming increasingly popular in large cities as a result of growing urbanization trends (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs 2018). As cities continue to grow, many of them along the coasts of continents which are prone to natural hazards, the performance of tall, flexible buildings when subjected to natural hazards is a pressing issue with engineering relevance. The performance of structures when subjected to dynamic loads can be enhanced with various response modification strategies which have been traditionally achieved with added stiffn

Energy from pavements can be harvested in multiple ways to produce clean energy. One of the techniques is electromagnetic energy harvesting, in which mechanical energy from vehicles is captured in the form of input displacement to produce electricity. In this study, a rack-and-pinion electromagnetic energy harvester proposed in the literature as a speed bump is optimized for highway-speed vehicles. A displacement transfer plate is also proposed, with a minimum depth of embedment in the pavement to carry input displacements from passing vehicles and excite the energy harvester. The energy harve

Abstract:
This report describes the development of an analytical model to generate synthetic acoustic emission (AE) propagating in a buried gas transmission pipeline in response to a source. The sources are assumed to be transient forces acting at a point in the pipe wall. The solution of the model is the set of displacements at a given location relative to the point source. These displacements are the representations of the AE waveforms.

Abstract:
This rapid literature review summarises evidence and key lessons that exist regarding previous refugee and mixed migration displacement from Afghanistan to surrounding countries. The review identified a diverse literature that explored past refugee and mixed migration, with a range of quantitative and qualitative studies identified. A complex and fluid picture is presented with waves of mixed migration (both outflow and inflow) associated with key events including the: Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989); Afghan Civil War (1992–96); Taliban Rule (1996–2001); War in Afghanistan (2001–2021).
