Abstract:
Relativistic hydrodynamics and kinetic theory play an increasing role in many areas of modern physics. Besides their traditional arenas, astrophysics and cosmology, relativistic fluids have recently attracted much attention also within the realm of high-energy and condensed matter physics, mostly in connection with quark-gluon plasmas experiments in heavy-ion colliders and electronic transport in graphene. This chapter describes the extension of the Lattice Boltzmann formalism to the case of relativistic fluids.

Abstract:
In Mechanics and Relativity, the reader is taken on a tour through time and space. Starting from the basic axioms formulated by Newton and Einstein, the theory of motion at both the everyday and the highly relativistic level is developed without the need of prior knowledge. The relevant mathematics is provided in an appendix. The text contains various worked examples and a large number of original problems to help the reader develop an intuition for the physics. Applications covered in the book span a wide range of physical phenomena, including rocket motion, spinning tennis rackets and high-e

Chapter 12 introduces Graphene, which is a two-dimensional “Dirac-like” material in the sense that its energy spectrum resembles that of a relativistic electron/positron (hole) described by the Dirac equation (having zero mass in this case). Its device-friendly properties of high electron mobility and excellent sensitivity as a sensor have attracted a huge world-wide research effort since its discovery about ten years ago. Here, the associated retarded Graphene Green’s function is treated and the dynamic, non-local dielectric function is discussed in the degenerate limit. The effects of a quan

It is explained how the mysterious Principle of Virtual Work in statics is extended to the even more mysterious Principle of d’Alembert’s in dynamics. This is achieved by d’Alembert’s far-sighted stratagem: considering a reversed massy acceleration as an inertial force. A worked example is given (the half-Atwood machine or “black box”). Some counter-intuitive aspects are made intuitive by more examples: the Pluto-Charon system of orbiting planets; Newton’s and then Mach’s explanation of Newton’s bucket. Also, it is demonstrated that the law of the conservation of energy actually follows from d

Electromagnetic Radiation is a graduate level book on classical electrodynamics with a strong emphasis on radiation. This book is meant to quickly and efficiently introduce students to the electromagnetic radiation science essential to a practicing physicist. While a major focus is on light and its interactions, topics in radio frequency radiation, x-rays, and beyond are also treated. Special emphasis is placed on applications, with many exercises and homework problems. The format of the book is designed to convey the basic concepts of a topic in the main central text in the book in a mathemat

Quantum field theory has become the universal language of most modern theoretical physics. This book is meant to provide an introduction to this subject with particular emphasis on the physics of the fundamental interactions and elementary particles. It is addressed to advanced undergraduate, or beginning graduate, students, who have majored in physics or mathematics. The ambition is to show how these two disciplines, through their mutual interactions over the past hundred years, have enriched themselves and have both shaped our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature. The book presents a multidisciplinary analysis of the context of quantum physics experiments and the function of the human mind that makes it possible to demonstrate that an object-based model of reality formed at the level of the unconscious is the basis of our worldview. The consciousness experiences a time flow because of the specific features of perception in the form of a model with a sequential fixation of events. Together with the need to relate objects in terms of the model, this generates a space-time representation of the world around us. Acceptance of a mental character of our const
