Abstract:
Theories of Relativity is a post-modern novella that questions the authority of truth. Multiple perspectives are utilized in the narrative to recount how the murder of a young girl has affected the tragedy's survivors. The focus of the narrative is not to determine the innocence or guilt of the accused, but to show how perspective influences our perception of truth. Eighteen pages of prefatory remarks comprise the body of an essay that explores the parameters of truth.

We focus on the class of higher derivative gravity theories as they naturally arise after the quantization of general relativity in the framework of effective field theory. Two intertwined issues in special relativity-clock synchronisation and the experimental verification of special relativity-are investigated, and novel results are given in both areas. The validity of the conventionality of distant simultaneity is supported, and the special theory of relativity is recast in a general synchrony "gauge" to reveal the operational significance of synchronisation in measurement and prediction within special relativity. For similar reasons, the Mansouri-Sexl test-theory is extended to allow arbitrary synchrony to be properly taken into account in the verification of

Abstract:

Abstract:
The abstract boundary construction of Scott and Szekeres has proven a practical classification scheme for boundary points of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It has also proved its utility in problems associated with the re-embedding of exact solutions containing directional singularities in space-time. Moreover it provides a model for singularities in space-time - essential singularities. However the literature has been devoid of abstract boundary results which have results of direct physical applicability.¶ This thesis presents several theorems on the existence of essential singularities in spa

Abstract:
Over a century since its inception, general relativity continues to lie at the heart of some of the most researched topics in theoretical physics. It seems likely that the coveted solutions to problems like quantum gravity are to be found in an extension of general relativity, one which may only be visible in an alternate formulation of the theory. In this thesis we consider the possibility of casting general relativity in the form of an initial value problem where spacetime is seen as the evolution of space. This evolution is shown to be constrained and of Hamiltonian type. Not all spacetim
