This thesis discusses Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques for formation evaluation in well log analysis for the oil/gas industry. We present the standard ingredients for NMR data processing and interpretation, and develop a methodology that extends the determination of surface relaxivity from the laboratory to the well site. The methodology consists of a processing algorithm for diffusion editing data, which enables surface relaxivity determination for conditions close to those found in well logging (regarding data availability and noise levels). At moderate noise levels, lower relaxiv

Magnetic nanoparticles have received extensive attention in the biomedical research, e.g. as prospective contrast agents for T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. The ability of a contrast agent to enhance the relaxation rate of 1 H in its vicinity is quantified by relaxivity. The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate the transversal re- laxivity of ε-Fe2−x Alx O3 nanoparticles coated with amorphous silica or citrate - its dependence on external magnetic field, temperature and thickness of silica coating - by means of nuclear magnetic resonance. Protein based contrast agents (ProCAs) developed by the Yang lab exhibit unique capabilities in enabling magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with significantly improved sensitivity and targeting capabilities by utilizing biomarkers which can target various carcinomas in animals. Further clinical in vivo human applications require modifications of these designed contrast agents to further improve organ and tissue biodistribution, biomarker and cell targeting capabilities, and reduction of immunogenicity. A new class of polymer stabilized gadolinium trifluoride nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), with potential long term goals in targeted imaging and anti-cancer therapy. The NPs are comprised of a 90/10 mixture of GdF3/EuF3 and are coated with linear polyacrylic acid (PAA) chains consisting of 25 repeating units. The resulting aggregates are stable in serum and possess unprecedented mass relaxivities [i.e. ~100-200 s-1(mg/mL)-1]. Electron microscopy images reveal various NP morphologies which depend on

Both terminal acetylenic and azide group should serve for connecting to another molecules or partitions by mean of "click chemistry" i.e. [1,3] copperI catalyzed dipolar cycloaddition between azide and acetylene. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most prominent non-invasive technique used in clinical diagnosis and biomedical research. Its development as an imaging technique has been aided by contrast agents (CAs) which enhance contrast to noise ratio in the images. This dissertation deals with paramagnetic lanthanide- and superparamagnetic iron-based nanoparticles (NPs) which are potential CAs at clinical field of 3 T and a high field of 9.4 T. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of colloidal nanoparticles, with an emphasis on their surface chemistry and magnetic properties for bio-applications.

NMR is gaining increasing interest in civil engineering for applications regarding microstructure characterization as e.g., to determine pore sizes or to monitor moisture transport in porous materials. This study reveals the capability of NMR as a tool for pore size characterization. Therefore, we measured floor screed and synthetic materials at partial and full saturation. For most examined materials, the pore size distribution was successfully determined using either a reference or a calibration method. Since diffusion effects were observed for some samples in single-sided NMR measurements,
