Civil religion is a necessary unifying force in a religiously plural society such as the United States, but it can also usurp the place of Christianity in the believer’s life. This is always a danger for Christianity which can only be the “good news” if it is inculturated by drawing upon a society’s own symbols. But it must also transcend the culture if it is to speak a prophetic word to it

Religion is central and vital for an Igbo person. No Igbo person exists in isolation from his/her community. An indigenous and traditional Igbo society is communal; it does not entertain any sense of individuality. But the coming of the missionaries broke into this communal bond with a new religion that threatened the traditional society when it began to exalt the individual soul. The Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe, in his book Things Fall Apart, portrays a situation in which an African indigenous missionary (Mr. Kiaga) succeeds in separating a son (Nwoye) from his African parent (Okonkwu) so that the son can become a Christian and be saved. But alone? As the son leaves his parents’ house for the mission compound the missionary quotes the Bible, “Blessed is he who forsakes his father and mother for my sake…” Achebe’s story depicts a situation in which the family is utterly divided as a result of the parents’ or their children’s conversion to Christianity. At this point, things fall apart. The pivotal core of the traditional Igbo society cannot hold again. The majority of the missionaries saw African religion from within their Western understanding and concluded that it was heathen, anti-Christian, and repulsive. African societies started to disintegrate when traditional religion was attacked. A rift occurs between the family and the extended family. Instead of bringing reconciliation and understanding, Christianity in this case brings division. This is because converts were instructed to leave everything behind, including families, for the sake of the gospel. But the Igbo Traditional Religion looked at life in a holistic way. There was no contradiction between sacred and profane, hence many people were horrified when the first converts wanted to set themselves apart, away from other members of the community. This is why inculturation is important, as it enables the Igbo Christian to see and experience life in a holistic manner without doing needless violence to cultural values. The failure of the early missionaries to inculturate the cultural values of the people is the conundrum. The result raises some theological problems. In the attempt to ascertain a balance, most times, the Christians in Africa, particularly in Igboland, find themselves oscillating between Christianity and African Traditional Religion (ATR). The need for a reconciliation is long overdue. It is best given a lasting, concrete and a dialogical chance through inculturation

Full textThe goal of this essay is to analize aspects of production and dissemination from the anticommunist speech of Catholic matrix in Caruaru society throuth the diocesan newspaper A Defesa, in the last years of the 50s of the twentieth century. This speech built by grandees and intellectual men from the local church both clergy and laity, it tried to maintain the churchs hegemony and mass which leaders are connected. The analyze was based on Foucault, everyday relations are established with the use of codes and languages in which there are domination and knowledge, in order to keep forms of domination in society by the talking. In addition to Foucault, it was also used the concepts of Certeau on the daily practices and relationships that contribute to the social networks, and the production of social subjects through speeches and relations of the society interstices, as an "art of doing and being. It is applying this theoretical tool, it analyzed the speech developed by the local Catholic Church which used the language of faith and the social doctrine formulated by Pope Leo XIII and developed by his successors, in order to stop the spread of communism in the city of Caruaru, Pernambuco. It was researched the methodology used by the Church in imagistic discursive dissemination about communism that was not reduced only in preaching at MISSA, but it wanted a big number of Caruaru people, it started a "holy war" against communism, through the newspaper A Defesa.

Full textThis dissertation reflects on evangelization, the call for freedom for conversion to the Gospel and a commitment to the neighbor, the reason and central mission of Christianity, its foundations and its development in Brazil and the main challenges that the Church has faced in this process. Among the challenges - and opportunities - is the Internet, a computer network widely used as a means of communication that comes to form of a new environment mediated by technology with a porous frontier that invades the space of human beings coexisting, leading to great transformations and determining a new style of thinking, acting, perceiving, speaking, creating and keeping new subjects, transforming the way people relate. This social network is described, then, presenting its main characteristics, from the cut of the virtual spaces of greater movement in Brazil at present, and seeks to detect the openness to the transcendence that arises in these environments, as well as the requirements of new Languages and attitudes of the Church to communicate adequately in this field. In the agenda of questions about evangelization, the internets thematic already occupies a prominent place, because of the challenges it poses in organizing and speaking about ecclesial communities, but above all in the theological opportunity to listen to the mystery of the Word by communicating between and besides the internet user in their virtual networks. In order to circumscribe this new mystique, through the bibliographical research, the dissertation covers the main documents issued by the Magisterium of the Church and also the works of renowned authors such as: João Batista Libanio, Mário de França Miranda and Antonio Spadaro, seeking to know how the Church has positioned itself in relation to this new environment and checking the main tensions that have arisen, how the Church confronts them and what results have been achieved, what pastoral and theological suggestions can be made for contemporary evangelization.

Pope Francis, in the Encyclical Laudato Si, assumes a position of those who want to promote dialogue with all those who struggle and engage in caring for Mother Earth, one of the signs of the times, in order to solve the challenges of both social order and of ecological order. Thus, to rethink the theology of creation in its entirety is intended to combat an excluding model acquired by nations over time, especially in the last three decades. This exclusion generates more and more hostility in the common house. Starting from these presuppositions, this work aims to establish a theological reflection on the christian practice and at the same time to offer a theological-ethical collaboration, starting from the dialogue with other knowledge; therefore, it is a question of presenting the coordinates of an ecology that integrates efforts in the political, philosophical and economic field, in the light of the signs of the times. The problematic of this work is based on the following question: What are the theological and pastoral ramifications of Laudato Si in relation to ecclesial conversion and its contribution in the elaboration of ethical proposals to society? To this end, the assumed hypothesis is based on the assumption that the Encyclical Laudato Si contributes both to ecclesiological conversion and to the presentation of ethical principles and attitudes that promote social justice. These proposals go beyond those put forward by the UN, at the conclusion of the Climate Conferences or also called Conferences between the Parties (COPs). Therefore, the research is in the line of theological reflection on Christian practice, moral theology, from an eco-theology. The general objective of this work is to present the limits and possibilities of the dialogue between the integral ecology of Laudato Si and the aspirations of contemporary society in COPs 20 and 21. As specific objectives are: to contemplate reality in its challenges and impulses. In a second moment, discern how society is organized: politics; how one thinks this question: philosophy and the way in which things are produced and consumed: the economy. Finally, propose some reactions that aim to promote the integrality, care and cultivation of life: a celebration to change the look, a prayer for conversion. This research assumes as methodology the bibliographic research coming from different authors, (final considerations) in order to think the reality in the light of the interdependence of the knowledge with a view to finding solutions that are collective. Sustaining the life of everything and everyone depends on reviewing the conduct of this generation to care for and guard the common home in a healthy way and deliver it to the next generations
Full textThis dissertation attempts to be a deep look at the particular universe of the adolescents from secondary schools and young university students, catching a glimpse in a dialogue and systematic approach with themselves and the church, and the church with the adolescents and juvenile people disenchanted with the institutional sacred and, therefore, living a religious crisis. Our proposal is, above all, to provide a broad knowledge of the factors which unleashing factors of this crisis in the presence of the sacred and the identification of clues to one new juvenile spirituality, in the mystic of Paula Frassinetti. The studies about adolescence and the youth in general, report and characterize this crossing to the maturity as something very important in the formation of the adolescent and juvenile psycho-religious identities mainly when we treat of the juvenile crisis in the presence of the institutional sacred. The partial results, acquired along the work with adolescents (São José School, CECOSNE) and the university students (FAFIRE) and through the field investigation, are attempts of an approach with this public, making them aware of psycho-religious and spiritual experiences present in this phase of life. The research showed, on one hand, a confusing youth in some points related to the spirituality and religious presence. On the other hand, we could observe a unique spiritual experience in the way the young people think; this experience lived by wishes, affection, happiness, sympathy, and the avoidance of everything which was dogma, rules and acts without no sense in their lives in constant change. The crossing of an adolescent spirituality and juvenile heterogeneous to one more autonomous is well-characterized in the field search, but we can notice that the adolescent crisis is more vivid than the juvenile in the presence of the institutional sacred without having, nevertheless, the essential loss of juvenile spirituality which is more centered in front of the Other (God) than the religious institution. At last, with this study, we intend to contribute methodologically with techniques and resources which could be used to re-enchant the sacred to the juvenile universe, providing the protagonist of a new spirituality according Saint Paula Frassinetti

Abstract: This study is about a Brazilian intellectual called Alceu Amoroso Lima, also known as "Tristão do Ataíde". In 1928, he publicly adopted Catholicism, becoming one of the most important voices of the Church in Brazil throughout the following decades. In other words, he got indirectly involved in politics by becoming the semi-official delegate for political affairs and wrote several articles and books. In the late 1920s and 1930s he expressed a very conservative mindset; nevertheless especially after the II World War he gradually became a champion of freedom of speech and other civil rights. Our aim is to understand the causes of this change as well as the consequences it brought to his actions and writings on the problem of organizing the working classes according to the Catholic Social Doctrine.

Full textThe adherents of an ideology usually possess common ideas and values, and tend to cluster together as a subculture. Consequently they often experience difficulty in relating to the wider society which exists in the same time and place. Early in its history, Christianity encountered relational problems with Jews and pagans; controversies also developed amongst rival Christian groups. The persistence of this conflict caused H. Richard Niebuhr to call it 'the enduring problem'; he also identified a range of typical responses, particularly in Western civilisation. On the two extremes are those Christians who withdraw and accommodate; occupying the middle ground are dualists, synthesists and conversionists. These solutions may be held in their pure form or in a variety of combinations. They may be influenced by a range of ideas about salvation, the church, eschatology, the relations of church and state, Christian history and patterns of thought in society. The Christianity which was transplanted into colonial Australia was derived from Northern Hemisphere denominations, and experienced the persistent effects of distance, dependence and sectarianism. Divided by national and religious loyalties and antipathies, and challenged by a desacralised society, the churches tended to develop a conservative ethos which failed to address crucial religious and social questions. Denominational attitudes toward educational, economic and political issues may be used to identify the various stances which were present in New South Wales near the end of the colonial period. Selected Roman Catholic, Church of England, Wesleyan Methodist and Seventh-day Adventists perspectives are explored in the light of Niebuhr's typologies. The solutions favoured by these denominations were based on the range of factors indicated above. For instance, the uniqueness of Catholicism as the one 'true' church was strongly presented by Cardinal Patrick Francis Moran; the inclusive strength of Anglicanism as a 'comprehensive' church was fostered by Archbishop William Saumarez Smith; and the idea that their church was 'chosen' to preach the gospel and engage in a war with evil was nurtured by the Wesleyan weekly newspaper. Nominally, these three denominations included eight out of every ten people in New South Wales. In order to illustrate the determinative role which eschatological thought may assume in a religious group, Adventist ideas as expressed by Ellen Gould White are examined in relation to her idea of a 'remnant' church. Each denomination was strongly persuaded by the merits of its own stance, and unconvinced by the strengths of the other religious options. Thus, Christianity tended to remain institutionalised and divided; it was, therefore, often unattractive to secular Australians. It seemed more appropriate for each subculture of Christians to maintain its boundaries rather than to search for and promote a coherent religion directed toward meeting the evident human needs in colonial society. The experience of Christianity in nineteenth-century Australia illustrates the power of ideas to motivate and restrain believers; it also demonstrates the continuing usefulness of Niebuhr's analyses and the necessity for a constant reappraisal of 'the enduring problem'.

This thesis examines the urban history of Qing dynasty Hangzhou by closely analyzing the religious architecture of one Tianhou temple and one Catholic Church. This examination summarizes the evolution of these features and offers some thoughts on the influence that those changes made to social life and public spaces in Hangzhou.
Apart from the introduction and conclusion, this thesis consists of four chapters. The introduction briefly reviews works Chinese urban history by scholars from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China and abroad. It then surveys the types of historical material used in the project. In particular, it reviews the contributions in Susan Naquin’s work on Beijing’stemples in Ming and Qing China as a major source of inspiration for the perspective taken in this work, as it draws upon Naquin’s perspective on religious architecture as a part of a city’s public space in order to combine an analysis on social life and urban history.
The first chapter discusses the history of Hangzhou’s administration and its political, economic, cultural and religious development in the Qing Dynasty. It then outlines the history of the locations and major changes to the Tianhou temples dedicated to the goddess Mazu throughout the city.
The second chapter begins at the end of Ming Dynasty and ends in 1730. Over this period of time, Catholicism became more popular in Hangzhou, and people built a glamorous Catholic church in the city. In 1730, provincial governor Liwei turned Hangzhou Catholic Church into the Wulin Men (the Gate of Wulin) Tianhou temple because of the Yongzheng Emperor’s prohibition of Catholicism. The case study in this chapter allows the author an opportunity to discuss the complicated interaction between governmental religious policy and local administration.
Chapter three concerns the development of Wulin Men Tianhou temple in the following century. This chapter pays special attention to the interaction of local government officials, literati, and gentry-merchant families.
Chapter four covers wars and changing diplomatic situations happened from the Opium War to the early years of the Tongzhi Reign. This chapter relates the lifting of the taboo on Catholicism in the late Qing and the transformation of the Wulin Men Tianhou temple back into a church.
The conclusion emphasizes: From the changing nature of religious buildings, as well as attention to its shifting functions and roles in urban life, one may understand something about how the internal and external policies of the government combined in local administration and development. This perspective can change our perspective on our city, which will in turn influence its history and public life.

This thesis examines the actions of the Latin missionaries in the Latin Catholic community of Constantinople between 1650 and 1760. In Constantinople as well as in other mission territories, missionaries were constantly confronted with the universal claims of the post-Tridentine Catholic Church and the practical requirements of the local pluri-religious context. The main aim of this dissertation is to analyze how the missionaries acted within the local context of Constantinople. In terms of methodology, this study combines the approaches of recent research on Early Modern Catholicism after the Council of Trent, of closely related research on extra-European local Christianities and of recent social and cultural research on the Ottoman Empire. In order to work out the processes of negotiation and appropriation between the different actors, the thesis adopts a micro-historical approach and an actor-focused perspective. First, the thesis focuses on the institutional actors, as the representatives of the local Latin Catholics, the patriarchal vicars and missionaries as well as the ambassadors of the European powers. Secondly, the tensions between Roman standards and the local requirements are analyzed with regard to the Constantinopolitan sacramental practice regarding baptism, marriage and funeral rituals. Finally, issues related to the crossing of religious boundaries are explored. The study reveals that the multi-religious structure of Constantinople and the strong position of the French ambassador limited the influence of the Roman Curia on the Latin Catholic community remarkably. Moreover, it emerges how, rather than represent Roman standards, the missionaries acted to a large extent as representatives of the local Latin Catholics.

My research focuses on church-state relations in contemporary China, to explore whether or not the Catholic Church in China constitutes a threat to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime. I am undertaking a comparative study of the CCP’s religious control over the Catholic and Protestant churches in mainland China through the approach of state-society relations, as well as a macroscopic view of political science with quantitative and qualitative analysis.
As they are both foreign-originated parts of Christianity, the Catholic Church has been subjected to much stricter controls from the mainland CCP since 1949 than the Protestant Churches. Furthermore, the Protestant churches have been the fastest growing religion in China in past three decades, but it had once grown relatively very slowly under late Qing and the KMT regimes, compared with the Catholicism. This research tries to explore these two strange phenomena, to study why the CCP has been so highly attentive towards the Catholic Church but has not eliminated it in mainland China.
Through expounding the differences between the Catholic Church and the Protestant churches in religious doctrines, organizational structures, propagation models, as well as development rates in China, which have been ignored by most scholars in the field, I try to interpret why the CCP has taken much tougher religious control over the Catholic Church, compared with the Protestant ones. Furthermore, I also make comparison between the Catholic Church and the CCP both of those are hierarchical organizations with highly unified ideologies, as well as different kinds of Universalism and Particularism.
In my view, the Catholic Church in China is different from Protestant churches, in that it has the tradition of "The Directives of Matteo Ricci," which expounded Christian doctrines in a Confucian way. It also comports with the traditional dependence on patriarchal clans (kinship) and obedience to secular authority found in Chinese society. It is not a social group that inclines to reform or revolution, but rather a conservative, exclusive, and highly stable one. Therefore, it has never intended to threaten or challenge the CCP’s authority. The opposition of the Catholic Church in China has been "misperceived" by the CCP.
As a regime highly unified in ideology and organization, the CCP’s state has been highly attentive toward any religion that has a nationwide, structured organization in China, whether it is of foreign or native provenance. Contrary to the common view in the field, it is argued that the Catholic Church could survive in China after 1949 -- in contrast to the "I-Kuan Tao" (Yi Guan Dao; eliminated in 1950’s), and "Falun Gong" (eliminated in recent years), because of its powerful world-wide network, its linkage with the Vatican. The CCP wants to maintain the disruption between the official and underground Catholic Churches in the Chinese mainland, to divide the Catholic Church and rule it in China.
