Full textThe thesis that i have the honour of defending is based on four parts, all of which are linked. Through its volume, it aims to provide an overall history. Thus the various layers of its contents will be studied successively: 1) the geographical and spatial framework of the parish network of the archdiocese of toledo, related to its little-known history. 2) the economic structures reported by ecclesiastical visits in connection with critical examination of the revenue and of the ensuing debate. 3) the links between religion and society. On this point, my work explores the problem of poverty, the implantation of hospitals, particularly those for the mentally ill, and the profound, durable impact of religious communities. 4) the last point discussed in this work concerns the clerical cultures and the three vectors used by the church to increase its hold. After first identifying the emergence of a modern model of the priest, we examine the influence of the catechism, the cartillas (small school textbooks) and the clerks' libraries as reflected in the inventories made after their deaths. These four phases, as merged together in this thesis, attempt to reflect the interdependence of religious phenomena and the radical complexity of their nature. They seek to emphasise the unity of the undertaking

Full textThe main character in the TV serial : "The Schoolmaster", Victor Novak, inheriting from the great archetypal images of fictional heroes, presents the schoolteacher function under an enthusing or irritating aspect as the case may be. In the heart of TV production, the schooling system invests large financial and symbolical means to promote this formerly in crisis job. In the meantime, picture creators and story-tellers meet certain social expectations, consciously or not. Combining both dimensions of the object, we wish to show that this TV serial has played an important part in building a "powerful" image of the schoolmaster ; secondly, has or hasn't this representation altered the relations between the profession and its audience ? Is such an image of any professional use ? "The Schoolmaster" isn't a gratuitous act ; it fulfils functions serving both the creating and the political worlds

Full textThe focus of our thesis is on various social problems experienced by black women in patriarchal societes as seen by french-speaking female novelists from black africa and the caribbean islands. The need was felt to limit this study to former french colonies in order to be able to explore the influence of a particular form of colonisation on colonised women. We also analysed the way in which french patriarchy modified traditional african patriarchy and the resultant situation. Our study consists of five chapters, the first of which examines woman's body as seen by man, by western civilisation and by the woman herself from a psychological and philosophical standpoint. The second chapter deals with woman's relationship to the surrounding space : exile (a tragic experience) and space in one's native land. Home and the outside world change their significance depending on a woman's social class : the wealthy woman is housebound whereas the wage-earner is chased out of her home by the need to earn her living. The third chapter deals with woman's social conditioning. Traditional upbringing and western influence make her an alienated person but paradoxically, it was western formal schooling that was to open the door to individual freedom for her. In chapter four, we analyse various activities that help to bring out female dynamism and in chapter five, we look at woman's relationship to marriage. Sex and motherhood. Her economic dependence and the lack of contraception make these experiences a form of servitude. In conclusion, female novelists emphasize the importance of formal schooling in the improvement of the female condition

Full textThe aim of this work is to study the recommendations of contemporary theories of justice linked to liberal thought in the areas of educational policies and welfare benefits. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of theories of justice. It tries to locate the particularities of each one through a study of the common features and differences of the argumentations and through a search for ways to bring about reconciliation between competing views. The first set of theories studied the works tied to egalitarian liberalism, written by Rawls, Dworkin, Sen, Cohen, Roemer, Arneson, Fleurbaey. The second one gathers the theories connected with a more radical liberalism, written by Nozick, Gauthier, Hayek and Van Parijs. The second part of this thesis is devoted to the public actions advocated, in an explicit or implicit way, by the theories examined, in the fields of education and national assistance. In each case, the first step of the reflection consists in deducting from each theory of justice a set of loading principles of public action and a second step wonders about the effects of their implementation, referring to empirical studies led on the contemporary examples of their application. Two problems are studied in regard to education : first, tha adaptation of educational resources to the natural and social characteristics of the pupils and next, the legitimacy of a move toward a competing market of educational services based on a vouchers system and on parental liberty of choice. With respect to national assistance, the two problems analysed are the type of the welfare benefits (cash benefits or in-kind benefits) and the rule on the basis of which is determinated the amount given to people able to get a job (guaranteed income, negative income tx, and basic income)

Full textIn the domain of politics at the end of the 19th century, the french department of the gard had a unique position linked to the relatively high number of protestants in the population (one third of the inhabitants). Whether through historical or dogmatic anticatholicism, or for other reasons, the majority of these protestants voted for the republicans, and, particularly those living in rural areas, for the radicals. Then after the dreyfus affair, they voted for the socialists. This leftist leaning in the department was offset by the strong influence of the royalist right who were supported by the catholics and their clerical organisations. Caught between these two extreme trends, the moderate republicans were annihilated and had no deputy after 1898. The splitting of the republican party, already well advanced in 1881, then slowed down by the dreyfus affair, was complete by 1914. At that time, the republican party was confronted by new political problems, including the three year military service law, and it came out divided. Moreover, the separation of the churches from the state had deprived the republicans of the unifying theme of anticlericalism. Finally, the royalist catholics hatred for the moderate republicans (often protestant) incited them to adopt a "politique du pire" (i. E. Making the worst possible choice in order to attain their own ends) and to support the most leftist candidates, sometimes even socialists who appeared as enemies of the republic. The real triumph of the extreme left at the 1914 general election can be explained by these "contrary to nature" votes added to those of a significant proportion of the gard population. The aim of the present research is thus to study, through the history of the gard from 1881 to 1914, the relationship between religion, politics and social issues in the only french department of that time to include a statistically significant percentage of protestants in the population

Full textThe history developped in this thesis which brings together diverse empirical research, is that of a transition : transition from a model of care of specific populations to another model which is called risk management. In this movement, this transformation, the place and the treatment which is given to certain social groups which are here called marginal or non-classifiable populations situated on the frontiers of different domains of care, is redefined. The principal objective is to show, using the analysis of R. Castel as a model, how starting with AIDES and its links with drug addiction (our first object), a process which has been taking place here and there for several years and in a fairly diffuse manner has suddenly speeded up obliging a domain of care, a particular type of institution founded on a particular historical model to change to another model, that of the management risk. Revealed in this unusual way, integrated into discourse and practice (under the auspices of "risk reduction policy") as never before, this second model became the dominant model and the base of thenormal functioning of our society, causing other areas of transformation which had been hesitant and developing more slowly to take the same path. The debates ans changes taking place particularly in the domain of the treatment of juvenile delinquents which have a proeminent place in the media, in social policy and in politics, which is the second object of our analysis, bear witness of this. Taking this change, its form and its mechanisms as a starting point, this thesis sets out to trace its origins. It is based on diverse evidence from the past and accords an important role to individual stories ; account of individual actors (professionals, in institutions or associations) caught up willingly or unwillingly in this vast movement

Full textI began to ask questions when i became aware of a state of unease among social services teams in catalonia about the lack of definition of the role of the educator. The research materials are the result of my professional experience with educators. The first part of the thesis is connected with the transformations of society, the shattering of social unity and the proliferation of social problems (barel, castel). The epistemology of the research is permeated by the idea of an explosion of points of view and work on involvement as a means of production of knowledge (Ardoino, Canter Kohn, Devereux). Through an analysis of my research itinerary i show how that questioning has led me to change my point of view and shed any univocal vision. Through a way of thinking which revolves around a questioning of my way of looking at educators, i appropriate my place as practitioner-researcher and draw knowledge to create a device which invites educators themselves to call in question their way of looking at families in order to reappropriate their practice. The second part focuses on an analysis of the constitution in catalonia since the 80s of a social protection sector and the emergence of a representation of children at risk. We return to the educators and the institutionalisation of their function in the administration and professional qualification. The third part concentrates on an analysis of the materials (family dossiers, case histories, interviews, meetings and training sessions) which may clarify the way in which educators construct their categories in relation to the object and the profession and show that risk is a matter of relation and not of object. The point is not a definition of a model but the very possibility of educational action from positive globalising representations. Identity is still to be constructed, redefined and reinterpreted rather than given a priori
Gaurav, Kumar. "Sur certains problèmes de diffusion et de connexité dans le modèle de configuration." Thesis, Paris 6, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA066362/document.
Full textA number of real-world systems consisting of interacting agents can be usefully modelled by graphs, where the agents are represented by the vertices of the graph and the interactions by the edges. Such systems can be as diverse and complex as social networks (traditional or online), protein-protein interaction networks, internet, transport network and inter-bank loan networks. One important question that arises in the study of these networks is: to what extent, the local statistics of a network determine its global topology. This problem can be approached by constructing a random graph constrained to have some of the same local statistics as those observed in the graph of interest. One such random graph model is configuration model, which is constructed in such a way that a uniformly chosen vertex has a given degree distribution. This is the random graph which provides the underlying framework for this thesis. As our first problem, we consider propagation of influence on configuration model, where each vertex can be influenced by any of its neighbours but in its turn, it can only influence a random subset of its neighbours. Our (enhanced) model is described by the total degree of the typical vertex and the number of neighbours it is able to influence. We give a tight condition, involving the joint distribution of these two degrees, which allows with high probability the influence to reach an essentially unique non-negligible set of the vertices, called a big influenced component, provided that the source vertex is chosen from a set of good pioneers. We explicitly evaluate the asymptotic relative size of the influenced component as well as of the set of good pioneers, provided it is non-negligible. Our proof uses the joint exploration of the configuration model and the propagation of the influence up to the time when a big influenced component is completed, a technique introduced in Janson and Luczak (2008). Our model can be seen as a generalization of the classical Bond and Node percolation on configuration model, with the difference stemming from the oriented conductivity of edges in our model. We illustrate these results using a few examples which are interesting from either theoretical or real-world perspective. The examples are, in particular, motivated by the viral marketing phenomenon in the context of social networks

Full textThe present doctoral thesis is focused on the mediatisation of religion and the use of digital social networks in the professional culture of the clergy as well as on the integration of digital innovation in semi-closed religious organizations. The problematic of open versus closed systems in relation to media is approached by Stout (2012), who suggests that clergy and parishioners ought to “develop critical skills to assess religious messages wherever they appear” (Stout, 2012, p. 66). He analyses the capacity and willingness of religious communities to establish their own media, whether it’s traditional or new media, on the one hand, and on the other hand, the degree of openness when it comes to exposure to secular media, which includes products and content of pop culture, thus setting-up the frame of discussion for the use of media in semi-closed religious organizations.Furthermore, this research is applied to the case of the Romanian Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDAC) clergy and believers and intends to highlight how the Internet and new media are experienced by Adventist pastors in their religious activity as well as by Adventist believers in their everyday religious life. Communication of doctrines, religious and spiritual teachings, in written or verbal form are the main activities of the both pastoral and parishioners’ groups. The research also shows a significant pro-technological mentality of the SDAC throughout the last century, and its motivation – related to the opportunity to spread the evangelical message

From a color is able to express an individual behavior in a social group? To answer this question, we are guided by a psychological method: that that is the capability of an individual to ajust a stimili. Such a method si only one aspect of the subject. Other methods used in this research in order to deepen the research are, a study of structure, of symbolic, etc. . . So; there are other ways to explain the use of color in a certain element. Color, have the power to affect the sensitivity of an individual. It also contribute in the conditioning of Fon people social the contribution of color in the fon sociaty, is totally felt and it plays an important part in social conflicts : color is the support of a symbolic thinking that means color can go from an abstract idea to a material thing. The passage of the notion of color materialy in nature and in the subconssiousness of the people and their behaviour is also an element of language and contionning (symbolichy speaking) it's associated to the spiritual energy and sociological. So, we can discover that most fon's cultes ceremonies are guided by "symbolic chrom" and they are signs of markers of automatie behaviours)

Full textRonald reagan is the first president to have presented a global alternative to the welfare state created in the thirties and sixties. The dissolution of the moral consensus behind the new deal policy urged the protestant and catholic churches to put forward a model of society based on christian values of solidarity. The alliance between christian fundamentalists and conservative politicians forced them to root this model in a preferential option for the poor. In order to translate this preferential option into a political and economic program, they had to move from the traditional practice of charity, which presupposes the permanence of poverty, to a campaign in favour of social justice which aims to eliminate it. A survey of the churches' action in three localities (new york, flint and yazoo city) shows that this shift from charity to justice was operated differently, depending on their insertion in the community, their eclesiology, doctrine and social reality

This analysis aims to provide an historical perspective for the joint development of the instruments regulating the labour force and the State's social intervention methods traditionally associated with the " indirect wage ", currently subject to great transformations within the " wage society ". On the one hand, the stringency policies had regressive effects on the employment, living and social reproduction conditions of broad sectors, reflected in increased unemployment and mass poverty, greater instability and the spread of social destructuring phenomena for over a decade. On the other hand, the market oriented-reforms of the 1990s tended to emphasize them and the strategy deepens liberalization. That means the retreat of the previous institutional modes of regulation and social protection, under the renewed external financial pressure that has tended to become endogenous and therefore structural

Full textThrough a theoritical study of social and digital media, this reseacrh work introduces first, the knowledge produced so far, on it. This work is based on a wide range of authors and thoughts from the seventies till today’s ones, in order to discuss the main issue. Indeed, the social media that turned from startup to multinational companies throughout the years 2000’s, have dramatically changed the landscape of media and communication among individuals. Starting from this observation, one has to ask the question of whether social media, has a direct influence on teenagers’ identity and social construction. This study demonstrates in fact, how Online identities are made thereafter, a key factor of youths’ social and identity representation. The student adapts his identity and his data within his digital spaces according to the reception produced and then acquired of the devices innovations. By framing the collected data from students within the assumed assumptions frame, future prospects are made out. As a matter of a fact, digital knowledge of the religious fact circulating on Internet, is an important element in the identity construction of students. It is in digital spaces that students develop the data identities. First they do it actively through the use of social and digital media, then passively through cookies and recommendations made by algorithm. The growing role of Internet in the identity process, with the massive use of social and digital media applications better mastered by students, raises a number of educational and pedagogical issues. In other words, the challenges and what is at stake for the French National Education, revolves about the use in situ and ex situ of the digital spaces

Full textTo this day, french protestants continue to behave in particular ways even if the degree and the form of those specificities have greatly changed all thoug the contempory period. Thus, the originality of their political behaviour has desappeared when compared to the french population as a whole, while it persists when compared with that of catholics. That is the result of the evolution of the conflict that opposed for a long time the two denominations, a conflict on which the cultural affinities between protestantism and democracy have been superimposed. The cultural specificity of the french protestants can still be found in the stricter moral approach, which still today differentiates them from the catholics in matters of sexual and family ethics. And it is also in the particularities of their system of values that we must look for the explanation of the specific fields of protestants'associative commitments more than in aspects of activist sociability. Finally, the cultural element seems to have to be taken into account to explain their early commitment to the capitalist spirit in the modern age, even if this process has never been strong enough to alter significantly the social structure of this denomination

The intention of this sociological analysis of a historical period is to point out to which extent this form of popular mobilisation constraints the social institutions, even the most established, to adapt their internal and external way of functioning to the crowd's behaviour, often far more emotionalised than considered. This behaviour could to a certain extent be viewed as the raw material of the public opinion. As a whole, this research aims at contributing to the understanding of the qualitative change from autocracy to democracy

Full textThe constitutions born of the recent claims for democrats in French-speaking Africa recognize, those generousth than the ancient fondamental laus economic and social rights - in the current context of economic crisis and liberalization, it is to ask oneself about the practical value of a such acknowledgement. The economic a socials rights are a heterogeneous set that the content must be delimited. Based on the distinction between "rights to do" and "rights to", we can recuse this content through the common reference of the states to international law. After that, we can determine the rights in the whole statute law and estimate their juridical value. It is positive, particularly in constitutional level, although in inegual degree, according to states. However it remains imperfect because of the inefficiency of the procedures and the very substance of the "rights to", imparticular so the implementation of these rights crises many problems: theorically and technically, we can build easity the juridical settlement by drawing the fundamental principles; but realy, they are very unworkable, concerning "rights to", yet once more. To face up to obstacles to the actuality of the rights, it's advisable to mention the suitable conditions to promote the protection promised by the constitutions

Full textIn this digital era, society is undergoing radical changes. Internet and other information technology are having major and growing repercussions on most societal components, including religion. Muslim spirituality, a component of the world’s cultural heritage, is also involved in this frantic digitalisation. Thus social networks, discussion forums and mobile Internet access are influencing the path Sufism is taking. The challenges facing it are multiple. Analysing them and putting into perspective modern, spiritual Islam through the Internet enables us to better grasp the links between spirituality and virtuality, between technology and religion, and at the same time glimpse at new, interdisciplinary fields of research. Beyond spirituality, we explore the parallels that can be made between the Internet and activities including initiation, support, training or apprenticeships

Full textThis research project aims to document the association between multiple biological and psychosocial determinants and the emergence of behavioural problems among schoolaged Inuit children. The objectives are firstly to document the presence of these risk factors through descriptive statistics and secondly, test the association with the development of externalizing and internalizing behaviour problems in a sample of eleven-year-old children. 294 Inuit aged between 8 and 14 years living in Nunavik were invited to participate in this longitudinal study. The Teacher's Report Form of the CBCL was faxed to the child's school for his teacher to complete. Pearson correlations and multiple regressions were performed on variables significantly associated with behaviour problems. The results of the correlations show that biological determinants are not associated with the occurrence of internalizing behaviour problems (IBP), and that gender and tobacco consumption during pregnancy are correlated with the appearance of externalized behaviour problems (EBP). In addition, prenatal drug use and breastfeeding have marginally significant correlations with EBP. Regression analyzes show the effects of child gender, prenatal exposure to tobacco, the Raven score and food insecurity are significantly associated with the occurrence of EBP, while the score at Raven and language during the interview, when combined, account for the emergence of IBP. In light of these results, questions remain and are discussed in conclusion.

The "revolving door" phenomenon in emergency departments (ED) is preoccupying for many managers and the general public but especially for users themselves and their families. A number of studies have described the characteristics of these frequent users. Knowing that mental health is an important issue for many of them, this research takes a look at frequent users living with mental health issues and gives a voice to their families. This exploratory study seeks to answer two questions: what are the psychosocial vulnerabilities of ED’s frequent users according to their families and what are these families' perspectives on this subject. To answer these questions, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with family members of frequent users living with mental health issues. Psychosocial vulnerabilities mentioned by family members were mainly regarding socio-economic difficulties, social isolation as well as precarious health. Three main patterns were also highlighted among the users examined in this research: elderly people visiting ED for motives due to aging; users consulting for crises related to their mental health troubles and people visiting the ED for a variety of physical complaints. Concerning the perspective of family members, results mainly show a variety of difficulties encountered trying to navigate through the health care system. Family members expressed being concerned with the users' situations and their willingness to help the users especially in a context of a lack of services and resources. This research supports the idea that frequent users should not be considered a homogeneous group and that it is necessary to offer them and their caregivers services adapted to their specific needs.

Full textVictims of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are at risk of developing multiple symptoms in various spheres of functioning that may continue into adulthood and adversely affect the development and stability of couple relationships (Briere & Runtz, 1993). The nature and extent of this diversity is associated with the quality of support received by the child (Charuvastra & Cloitre, 2008, Godbout & al., 2014). In this context, the purpose of this study is to examine the extent of social support received by adult survivors of CSA and how it is associated with various indicators of couple relationships quality (attachment as well as psychological, sexual and conjugal distress). A sample of 1309 participants currently in a couple relationship was recruited from within the community to answer online questionnaires about CSA, support received following the unveiling of this event, attachment, psychological distress, marital and sexual distress. Of the sample, 19.1% (n = 250) reported having experienced CSA. Of these CSA victims, 15.6% (n = 39) reported receiving support following the unveiling, 17.6% (n = 44) received negative support, while 66.8% (n = 167) never disclosed CSA. Path analyses indicated that, consistent with our assumptions, negative support is associated with greater attachment difficulties (abandonment anxiety and avoidance of intimacy) that are associated with greater psychological, couple and sexual distress. These results show the protective role of perceived support in the development of psycho-sexo-relational consequences following the CSA. These results will contribute to the development of best practices in managing the unveiling of CSA in preventive and therapeutic interventions with couples where one of the partners has experienced this type of abusive experience.

Full textIn this thesis, we study two problems of machine learning: (I) community detection and (II) adaptive matching. I) It is well-known that many networks exhibit a community structure. Finding those communities helps us understand and exploit general networks. In this thesis we focus on community detection using so-called spectral methods based on the eigenvectors of carefully chosen matrices. We analyse their performance on artificially generated benchmark graphs. Instead of the classical Stochastic Block Model (which does not allow for much degree-heterogeneity), we consider a Degree-Corrected Stochastic Block Model (DC-SBM) with weighted vertices, that is able to generate a wide class of degree sequences. We consider this model in both a dense and sparse regime. In the dense regime, we show that an algorithm based on a suitably normalized adjacency matrix correctly classifies all but a vanishing fraction of the nodes. In the sparse regime, we show that the availability of only a small amount of information entails the existence of an information-theoretic threshold below which no algorithm performs better than random guess. On the positive side, we show that an algorithm based on the non-backtracking matrix works all the way down to the detectability threshold in the sparse regime, showing the robustness of the algorithm. This follows after a precise characterization of the non-backtracking spectrum of sparse DC-SBM's. We further perform tests on well-known real networks. II) Online two-sided matching markets such as Q&A forums and online labour platforms critically rely on the ability to propose adequate matches based on imperfect knowledge of the two parties to be matched. We develop a model of a task / server matching system for (efficient) platform operation in the presence of such uncertainty. For this model, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for an incoming stream of tasks to be manageable by the system. We further identify a so-called back-pressure policy under which the throughput that the system can handle is optimized. We show that this policy achieves strictly larger throughput than a natural greedy policy. Finally, we validate our model and confirm our theoretical findings with experiments based on user-contributed content on an online platform
