Full textThe philosophy by Maine de Biran, starting from the problem of human intelligence, founded finally religion properly so called. Our study tried to throw light on how the biranian thought, after having discovered the mainspring of the thought in the conscious activity, extended to the religious knowing while remaining exact to this principle apprehended as the base for all knowing. And we have concluded at least that for this extending, his thought must have accepted in itself the passive sensibility after being excluded as having no part with intelligence, in such a way that these two factors that constitute the entire man, active factor and passive factor, have an effect upon each other in order to prepare him to be able to receive grace, divine help, who one and only completes him as a soul ; and that the possible foundation of religion by philosophy consists in such a participation of these natural elements to supernatural

Full textThis work is a genetical study of hegel's philosophy, through the fondamental concepts of religion and history. The ream of this study is the thought of the young hegel, from 1785 to 1807, from his "tagebuch" to the phenomenoly of spirit. We distinguish: 10 a non philosophical hegelian thought, which takes place from 1785 to 1793 in stuttgart and francfort. Hegel improves his thought through the element of the culture of this period, the enlightment, and lutherian preaching. 20 a philosophical but non hegelian thought from 1793 to 1801 in bern and francfort. The biginning of the hegelian philosophical thought comes from the clash of his conception and the philosophy of kant. He tried first to put the finishing touches of the system of kant, but finished it in a critical way. 30 hegel materializes the hegelian philosophy in a systematical way. -this way is an external one, facing the german idealism -this way is an internal one, the development of an original speculativ dialectic. This study is a contribution to the explonation of the genesis of the first systematical hegelian philosophy and a contribution to a didactic of the hegelian philosophy

Then through its poetical work, Rimbaud suggests an interrogation on the sense of the existence and especially on Time, Memory and Space ; that is to say on the Poet and its cosmos. Appears at that moment, simultaneously positive and negative, his vision of the world : his opposition to Christianism and to its social conservative equivalent (Bourgeoisie) but also his affirmation of another reality in Idyll or urbanism. Full textAndrew Michael Ramsay was a Scottish intellectual of the Enlightenment and was at the same time a "religious adventurer", a political author and a freemason. Born into a Protestant family, he undertook a search for spiritual stability and for a doctrine more in line with his aspirations. In this quest, he journeyed through several countries, and he eventually found in the company of Fénelon, archbishop of Cambrai, and of Madame Guyon, an advocate of the doctrine of "Pure Love", a spiritual father and mother. Inspired by them, he finally converted to a Gallican variety of Catholicism which was at the root of his call to a life of constant soul-searching. From his work four treatises emerge: An Essay upon Civil Government (1721), in which he sought to show that the best form of government is an absolute, hereditary monarchy, based on divine right. As a zealous Jacobite, he longed for the return of the Stuarts to the British throne. The Life of Fénelon (1727) deals mainly with the various stages leading up to his conversion by the prelate. The Travel of Cyrus (1727) is a didactic, apologetic and political novel which relates the education of a young accomplished prince endowed with wisdom and piety. His most considerable work is The Philosophical Principles of Natural and Revealed Religion (1749), commonly called the "Great Work", which was published posthumously. Here the freemason can be seen beneath the philosopher. His Discourse (1737) traces the origins of Freemasonry back to the crusades, and also sets out the obligations that every freemason must adhere to and which he is reminded of during his initiation. His success in radically changing this organization so deeply attached to its customs remains the lasting legacy of this complex, mystical and political figure who is Andrew Michael Ramsay

Rousseau considers two sorts of beliefs : one pertaining to religion specifically and the other having to do with purely mundane values (possession, power and glory). This study aims to show that the novel, which matches the philosophical works regarding religion, has a much more amiguous position as far as mundane values are concerned (particularly power and glory)

Full textThis dissertation assembles a certain number of writings (already published or forthcoming), wich treat different aspects of the same basic theme : the relation of philosophical reflection to the christian faith. The first volume treats of the natural religious dimension of metaphysical wisdom, which starts its consideration with being as habens esse and from there rises to subsistent being, the pure act of existing. Although this religious dimension characterizes the concrete exercise of metaphysical wisdom and not its objective specification, it nevertheless demonstrates at the very least the philosophical possibility of a "christian philosophy". When philosophy is open to integral christian wisdom (which is itself a direct expression of the theological and mystical virtualities of faith), reason is then stabilized in a natural harmony with religious desire which assists it in attaining a full development of its inherent metaphysical capacities. This perspective makes the elaboration of an integral christian anthropology possible because it accounts for the most fundamental aspirations of the human spirit to the absolute, notably religion and wisdom

Full textThe composition of this thesis is organised around three problems. First, there is the problem of a rebellion that would not turn out to be a pretence (i. E. A rebellion that would not, in spite of itself, end up perpetuating the very mastery which it is fighting against). Then there is the problem of introducing melancholia (which is to say severe, not to say clinical, manic-depression) into a structure capable of supporting it and rendering it productive (one that saves the psychotic from annihilation by turning his pathology into the source of unheard of knowledges, rather than by 'curing' him of it). Finally, there is the problem of the radicalization of thought in the wake of François Laruelle's work. This radicalization does not pertain to the Real (which non-philosophy has definitively elucidated), but to theory and the need to furnish the unsurpassable unilateral rigour of the latter with a decisive cutting edge. Gnosis is the common solution to all three problems

Full textDuring a period of great instability in the land of Islam, Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī, an Arabic philosopher who died at the beginning of the second half of the tenth century, developed a political theory halfway between philosophy and religion. Inspired by the political philosophy of Plato, who conceived an ideal city model in his major political works (The Republic, The Timaeus, The Laws) and the classical Muslim society for which the first ruler or caliph is a political and religious leader, This theory presupposes the elaboration of a new city adapted to the Muslim culture called "the virtuous city" (al-madīna al-fāḍila). Within its walls, philosophy is considered a royal art and its practice is reserved for the first or governing ruler. It is the same for religion, which is the second and is considered "virtuous" (al-milla al-fāḍila) at the moment when it constitutes a means by which the head of the city proceeds to the instruction of his fellow citizens And gives them access to the attainment of happiness in this life and in another life, located after death. Our research aims at exposing the relations between religion and philosophy within the ideal city conceived by Fārābī and its opposing models (vicious, corrupt and misplaced cities and religions that are related to them). Focusing more specifically on the determination of the nature and function of the religious in the City, our study is divided into three aspects. The first relates to the biography of Fārābī and its relation to religion. The second is devoted to the examination of an aspect of his preserved work (corpus), from which we have attempted to reveal the nature and function of the religious in the "City", the latter being understood as the version More idealized of its model of a virtuous city that is the object of varied forms (small, medium, large human assembly). As for the last aspect of our research, he is interested in the reception of the philosophical-religious theory of the faylasūf in the work of his first successors and disciples in philosophy among the Moslem, Jewish and Christian circles of Arabic expression (Avicenna, Maimonides, Yaḥyā Ibn 'Adī)

Full textPhilosophy has found itself, since its birth in the land of Islam, in direct and continuous rivalry with the religion who claimed to have found the truth through faith. To resolve the conflict between reason and faith, Muslim philosophers sought first to reconcile these two paths of truth. Here, the question raised by them was: what is the relationship between philosophy and religion? This thesis aims to show the attempt of Al-Fârâbî to establish a dialogue between these competing truths by defining one as the original philosophical truth and the other as symbolic truth, which is just an imitation of the former. Al-Fârâbî tried to prove the superiority of philosophy over religion using two ideas: first, the idea of religious imitation of philosophical truth; and, second, the philosophical tradition is ancient than the religious one. This study will try to answer why and how he based his philosophy on epistemology rather than on metaphysics. The transfer from metaphysics towards method created a new understanding of political philosophy. The philosophy is no more, as it was considered by Plato or Aristotle, a divine science or an end in itself, but it is a means to obtain happiness. This thesis concludes first that philosophy can achieve happiness and acquire human perfection through combining theory and practice by virtue of political philosophy. Second, only a philosopher can rule a political community and achieve happiness for its citizens

Full textMy thesis undertakes a critical reconstruction of the political philosophy of Leo Strauss (1899-1973) on the basis of his early writings, which I contextualize in the political and philosophical frame of the Weimar Republic and the “German-Jewish Renaissance” of the 1920s. My main hypothesis is that his concept of ”political philosophy” emerges from a confrontation with the “theological-political dilemma” that German-Jewish thought faced after the First World War, the radicalization of German Anti-Semitism and the problem of being torn between national and religious Judaism. I argue that in his early writings of the 1920s, Strauss transforms this dilemma into the opposition between Enlightenment and orthodoxy, atheism and theism that he tries to overcome in the form of an “biblical atheism”. In the 1930s, after his “Platonic turn”, Strauss finds another solution to the “dilemma”, now on pre-modern philosophical grounds, through a new interpretation of Maimonides. With the return to this “platonic” Enlightenment, Strauss tries to harmonize anti-Enlightenment and Enlightenment, pre-modern rationalism and the justification of authoritarian theological-political order. My argument ist that this paradoxical project is the core of his philosophical neo-conservatism

Full textLiving at a crucial time of rome's spiritual evolution, varro was thus a very precious witness for the historians. The crisis of the religious conscience that his country went through, the necessity for the roman authorities to restore the working of the divine institutions had given him the occasion to formulate a coherent doctrine about faith and rites. In particular he endeavoured to reorgaznize in a rational and clear system the extensive matter of the classic polytheism. So he elaborated the famous distinction between a poetic theology, aphilosophical theology and a political theology. But the sabin thinker principally aimed at determining the respective provinces of each great national divinity. In his opinion indeed there was no doubt that the remedy for the state's decadence could only be metaphysical. By introducing into the ruling classes the belief in the soul of universe, by arousing their interest in astral speculations, varro incited them to give up politics and to cultivate philosophy. Last but not least - to his compatriots who despaired of future he offered, in the liber de philosophia, a deep meditation on individual happiness. This is the meaning of the

Followingthe 1920/1921 lecture course “Introduction to the phenomenology of religion”, the dissertationhas two main parts. In the first part, we show the priority as well as the excess of life over anytheory by: (i) redefining the very act of philosophizing as an experience sui generis, (ii)retracing Heidegger’s ambiguous debate with Ernst Troeltsc, (iii) searching for the mostradical concept of historicity, and (iv) inventing the methodological tool known as “formalindication” in discussion with Husserl. In the second part, we follow Heidegger closely in hisphenomenological-hermeneutical explanation of saint Paul’s Epistles, his interpretation of thegreat Christian Tradition, and his silent dialogue with major representatives of 19th centuryGerman theology

Full textThe starting point in this thesis is the need to assert the unity between body and mind through the “act” of double. It is an act that is both aesthetic and ethical, it implies an effort to transcend the self and ordinary perceptions in order to construct new realities. The double manifests to those who are able to detach from the parameters of representation that trap us into similarities and identity. It manifests to those who make an effort to abandon their limits and to grasp this “other” reality as "the double of life", as called for by Artaud in his Theater and its Double. It is creative, it creates an enactment and creates the power of what is false, in what G. Deleuze understands to be “the most exact enactment that correlates to the maximum of difference”. Who performs this act? Impersonal forces that go beyond the human realm perform this act, they precipitate cruelty, and force us into transcending subjective reflection and move us towards an act of impersonal creation. Who acts? It is certainly not the individual who does, but the cosmic will to create and the power of the earth itself. The act of double is tragedy, cruelty and force because it enwraps the body-mind in an extreme relation with life and death. This thesis aims to decipher both this act and the presence of shamanism in the universe brought forth by myth and the prehistory of philosophy, all the way up to the ideas of G. Deleuze who stands at the heart of this tradition. It echoes C. Castañeda in that it is an act of initiation that restores belief in this world allowing us to return transformed. The Double, the cruelty, the creative act, the effort, to step out of one’s self, impersonal forces, forces of the earth, sacred plants, sacred medicinal plants, will to power, the will to create in the cosmic realm, Repetition of the Difference, simulacra, the power of the Signifier, Acts of Fabulation, Acts of Resistance (Existence), philosophy and the Theater of Cruelty, the sacrifice, the ritual, the myth, staging a scene for Psychological or spiritual healing, healing and creating, prescient thinking, mysteries, trance, ecstasy, mystical introspection, inherent body thought, mystical states, the outer limits between life and death, shamanism, initiation experiences, heightened perception, out of body experiences.
