Abstract:
Review of Foundations of Community Journalism, edited by Bill Reader and John A. Hatcher. Los Angeles: Sage Publications, 2012, 283 pp. ISBN: 9781412974660 (pbk)This publication adds to a growing body of scholarly work currently being undertaken in the subfield of journalism and mass communication studies known as community media or alternative media. At first glance, the book appears to present a largely American perspective in its coverage of community journalism, but further reading assures one that the editors have fostered an approach that has universal relevance. The term community journalism is broadly defined as ‘journalism at the community level’. While the origins of community journalism in the United States is strongly linked to small-town newspapers, the practice has expanded in the 21st century as the notion of community itself has evolved from its link to geographical ties towards the emergence of global communities linked by ethnicity, religion, culture and interests. This deterritorialisation of community newspapers is demonstrated in the Pacific through the work of Tongan-born publisher Kalafi Moala, who prints weekly editions of Taimi ‘o Tonga for distribution to diaspora Tongan communities in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. With the changing conception of community journalism, it has become necessary to study this subfield within broader theoretical approaches, as the editors of this volume reflect in the book’s preface, ‘to prepare the next generation of scholars for a media environment in which community journalism no longer operates in the shadow of “big J” journalism.’ At the end of each chapter the volume includes reflective contributions from scholars and practitioners who bring valuable insights towards enabling a greater theoretical understanding of the field.

Abstract:

"Instilling Religious Knowledge and Practice as A Way to Prevent Deprivation among Parmalim People as An Indigenous Religious Minority Group in Indonesia." Digital Press Social Sciences and Humanities 5 (2020): 00008. http://dx.doi.org/10.29037/digitalpress.45343.

Full text
Abstract:
Parmalim is an indigenous religion from the ancient Toba Batak and has been categorized by the government as one of the “local” religions in Indonesia. They have been struggling to keep their community accepted among society. Furthermore, they often made comparisons between their group situation with other “formal” religious groups in terms of the institutional treatment regarding their civil data administration, the religious studies in the school, the building progress of the worship house, and their job opportunities. This study aims to present the descriptive result of the impact of instilling religious knowledge and practice as a way to prevent group relative deprivation among Parmalim people in Medan using a descriptive qualitative method. The Relative Deprivation theory was arranged from (Smith et al., 2014) theory using three components of RD, such as cognitive comparison, cognitive appraisal, and justice-related effect. The religious knowledge and practice are divided into Parmalim core values and customs such as Tona (Religious teaching), Poda (Commandement), Patik (Canon), and Uhum (Law). The result of this study had shown that Parmalim people in Medan possessed low group relative deprivation as an impact of the religious knowledge and practice that have been instilled among them.

Abstract:
A careful study and analysis of the religio-cultural practices of most tribal groups in Africa reveal that there is usually interconnectedness between the notions of salvation, morality and the conceptualisation of evil. It is thus believed that the ethical values and moral practices of such societies are sustained mainly by this interconnectedness of the concepts of the afterlife, morality and evil. As such, salvation among Africans in general can be said to have been greatly influenced by the ethical value systems of indigenous African societies from the perspective of their conceptualisation of evil. An investigation into the worldviews of the Tongu Mafi people reveals that this interconnectedness is firmly grounded in the beliefs and practices of the people. I contend in this paper therefore that the core indigenous beliefs, worldviews and practices of Africans are resilient and capable of sustaining their soteriological and moral practices. This paper is based on a phenomenological study of the Tongu Mafi people of Ghana mainly through interviews and observation of their religio-cultural practices. It concludes that the intersections of notions of salvation, morality and evil are couched in two moral principles: living a good life and avoiding evil. These two moral principles must be observed simultaneously in life for they constitute the foundations of the soteriological concerns and moral praxis of the Tongu Mafi people.

Abstract:
This research aims to study the value, the policy, the design, and also the application of character building education in Miftahul Ulum tambakrejo elementary school. The character building in Miftahul Ulum Tambakrejo elementary school consists of religious value beside independence and careness. In order the policy to be successful, the character building includes three points: 1) about learning such as giving more time for religion subjects, 2) the capacity building for teacher, 3) outside class activity such as supplying “my diary” book. The character building education in Miftahul Ulum Tambakrejo elementary school was applied inside and the classroom. The activity inside the classroom was applied with integrated model and strategy, namely integrated all the subjects with character value and related to the character in daily life. Meanwhile the approach used is inculcation approach. It is an approach that uses example in learning procces such as warshipping activities in the school. The character building outside the classroom was applied by having outbound, outdoor, extracurricular and worshipping custom. These activities will then be a good habit, so that the students always do positive thing.

Abstract:
After a large presentation of the social, political, economic and religious traditional system of the Tongan islands, the thesis focus on the study of genuine exploitation of the halieutic resources: technical aspects as ritual ones. The study of those fishing technics, tied to the imaginary shows that certain species of fishes, in certain villages, are treated as social partners assimilated as chiefs or gods. We are here in front of an example of the "total social fact" described by M. Mauss which throw in economic, social and religious genuine institutions. The rituals tied to the fishing technics result in strengthening the power of local customary chiefs - in reproducing the traditional political and social structure - they work on the reduction of social conflicts upon the micro-society concerned. In conclusion, those techniques qualified as religious, reproduce the supernatural and social order of the traditional society in a country on the way of modernization. The oral tradition in Tongan language, collected along the two fieldworks of 1974 and 1983, basic material of our interpretation of the facts, figures in appendix of the thesis

Abstract:
This study has the principle goal of showing that Christian institutions and practices are powerful forces for social management within the Tongan community, and, more precisely, that congregations are a primary means for facilitating social control, cooperation, competition, and conflict management. My ethnographic research, including discourse analysis, reveals the distinct nature of conflict management in a range of situations within the congregation and community. Comparison of a number of congregations of different denominational affiliation exposes the factionalization as well as the unification within and among congregations. The study of conflict management processes reveals that congregations are the primary institutional social force in Tongan communities are the primary means for organizing labor, distributing resources, and delegating responsibility for a wide range of activities. Congregations' management of conflicts engenders the expression of opposing beliefs and viewpoints within and between congregations, fuels an ongoing process of congregational identity, and furthers the means by which religious groups are agents of cultural transformation in regard to definitions of self, family, kin group, and community.

The purpose of this master's research whose corpus to work critters Bichos (1940), the Portuguese writer Miguel Torga, is to analyze the space configuration and its function in the narrative structure. This study is dedicated to the observation of the fictional status of the space in the literary text, the perception of this space by the characters and their surroundings and functions that assumes the narratives "Madalena", "Jesus" and "Vincente". We defined the analysis of spatial approach mode proposed by Santos (2007), the representation of space in the text as composition of belonging places and transit of fictional subject and we demonstrate that space, the selection processes and combined with other elements in the texts , is not limited to concepts such as place / environment / border.
This dissertation work has as main objective to analyze the relations between the human imaginary about the sacred and the literature in poetic works entitled Nihil Sibi (1948) Portuguese writer Miguel Torga, pseudonym of Adolfo Correia Da Rocha. The poet believes that monotheistic religions are no longer that necessary to fill human life. To offer man understanding and empathy, Torga presents us in Nihil Sibi the character of the Poet, ordinary man who understands the sufferings and human needs and that brings us comfort and enlightenment about life. The existentialist philosophy of Sartre is the basis of Miguel Torga argument to demonstrate to his readers the advantages of putting off the obligations of religious dogma, seen by him as obstacles to the potential of the human growth. The reach of the religious imagery on humanity and its representation through the myths and the arts will be seen with the help of some theorists: Mircea Eliade, Gilbert Durand, Northrop Frye and René Girard. Among the questioning ones about the dimension that religion gets in the life of man as a regulator of behavior, are Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Onfray. The poetic work Nihil Sibi transformed the Christian myth in a new light, questioning its impact on the lives of men in face of a new behavior which is based on its denial. The figure of the poet is transcribed in such a divine image as the sacred archetypes contained in many myths, but brings a message of clarity, lucidity and freedom, as opposed to the message of mystery and not questioning faith that Jesus brings to Christianity.

Abstract:
Pacific islanders have made Christianity their own, including the Methodism introduced by British missionaries in the early nineteenth century. At times, island Methodism has challenged political and social traditions, dissenting from racism against immigrant communities or undemocratic rule. In other cases, Methodism has enjoyed privileged status as the established religion of the land. In Tonga it thrived under royal patronage. In Fiji it attracted nationalists whose racial essentialism drew it into a military coup and the machinations of a dictator. Either way, Methodist churches have been challenged in recent decades by breakaway revival movements and new denominations, many of which seek to return Methodism to its roots in spiritual holiness. These challenges continue to reflect the active agency of islanders in shaping the religious life of their communities.
