The Scriptures are a product of an androcentric patriarchal culture and history. In this article, based on  Luke 8:42b-48 we reflect on Jesus’ liberating treatment of women. The first part will articulate the existential situation of women in Jesus’ day and in the Indian context the questions raised within it. A narrative reading of these biblical laws is elucidated through the story of Jesus and the adulterous woman in John 8:1-11. A Christotelic, polyphonic interpretation of this account is used to reveal how Jesus interpreted those laws as a case law demonstration of his narratological legal hermeneutic of Matthew 5:27-28. Abstract From its opening verse, this part of the gospel (chaps. 7-12) is shadowed by the threat of death. The Jews seek to kill Jesus, and so he stays away from Judea (7:1). Death had been referred to before, but it had never had such an immediate influence on Jesus’ decisions. In subsequent episodes the threat of death increases. During the feast of Tents (chaps. 7-8) Jesus alludes to his departure, and thus to his death (7:33-34; 8:21). At Dedication, when the Jews surround and almost stone him (10:22—39), the threat comes even closer. Then he loses a friend, Lazarus (chap. 11). And finally

A fragmentary text exhumed from the archives in 1958—or else fabricated that same year—is the fraught subject of this essay. Secret Mark has been embraced as the earliest surviving version of the Gospel of Mark and denounced as either a second-century forgery or a twentieth-century hoax. The stormy reception history of this controversial text—one that appears to represent a homoerotic encounter between Jesus and an unnamed young man—is an affective history of the first order, as the essay demonstrates.
