Names are more likely to be considered as cultural tags used to signify some deep-rooted aspects within the culture of a given speech community. In Saudi Arabia, naming is linked with religion, traditions, values, beliefs, and events in people's lives. This paper aims at investigating Saudi female personal names from a sociolinguistic perspective and it suggests that these names are not mere arbitrary tags, but socio-cultural labels that occupy socio-cultural meanings and functions. For this reason, the current study draws on a stratified sample size of 280 Saudi female personal names collecte

The Cratylus was seen as addressing the question of how names could be regarded as 'correct', raising the role of the name-giver to the level of the law-giver. It begins with the question of how a personal name could be correct. The ancient text that offers us most evidence of the philosophic manipulation of proper names is Porphyry's Life of Plotinus, w

Abstract:
In this chapter Denis Renevey examines the ways in which writers in the Greek world and, later, western religious teachers used the name of ‘Jesus’ in contemplative practices, and offers ‘answers as to the way in which knowledge of the power of the name “Jesus” was appropriated for different purposes in the two differing Christian traditions, and according to distinct spiritual ideologies’. Renevey discusses the influence of Origen in the development of knowledge about the powerful potential of the name of Jesus and goes on to highlight the attachment to the name in Orthodox liturgical practice from about the ninth century, an attachment that in the fervency of its language anticipates western traditions of affectivity. Among western writers, Renevey focuses on Anselm of Canterbury and Bernard of Clairvaux, the former promoting affective use of the name in personal devotion, the latter in a communal monastic context, as part of a well-conceived devotional scheme.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the ethnic, religious, economic and political interactions of Olbia with other communities during the 600–100 century BC. It focuses on the various relationship of the Greater Olbia with both Greeks and non-Greeks. Greater Olbia pertains to Olbia's mini-empire in the northwest Black Sea and spans across the estuary of the lower Bug, the lower Dnieper, the north-west Crimea, the outer estuary of Dnepier or Hylaea, the Berezan, the island of Lueke, and the settlements along Dniester. Greater Olbia was largely dependent on the maintenance of broadly symbiotic relationships with non-Greeks. These relationships and interactions with other non-Greek communities are reflected in the existence of a rich mix of traditional Greek and barbarian names in the personal names of Greeks. However distinct and Greek the Olbiopolitans may have perceived themselves, they were subjected to extensive cultural osmosis between Greeks and non-Greeks in and around the city. This osmosis and symbiosis can be seen in the religion, the pottery, the names and other aspects of the Olbiopolitan living such as the observation of Dio Chrysostom where he made note of a young Olbiopolitan cavalryman in a garb of a barbarian yet with his head full of Achilles.

Abstract:
The focus of this chapter is on names that are not epichoric in a linguistic sense (for they are Greek), but have been emphatically said to be ‘of a region’. The cultural implications and justifications of such a statement are investigated for two names: Agroitas and Agreophon, said to be characteristic of the ‘Caro-Lycian border region’ (Kaunos, Kalyndos and the Indos river). Multiple instances of both occur in a long list of names from Hippoukome, high up in the Indos valley. The underlying assumption is that both have associations with hunting and wild nature and have roots in the Anatolian ‘tuf religieux’: the timeless religious substructures of the Lycian–Pisidian interior. The article questions this picturesque and superficially persuasive association on linguistic, cultural and statistical grounds.

Abstract:
The traditional critique of esprit de corps in the name of egalitarianism and personal freedom never ran dry in France, contrary to the UK or the USA. While the idea of esprit de corps maintained its strong critical aspect for example in Zola’s J’accuse or later in Bourdieu, a certain mystique of esprit de corps emerged in Bergson and later in Deleuze & Guattari. Esprit de corps was a fundamental notion in Bergson’s The Two Sources of Morality and Religion, whichtransposed to philosophical discourse the individualist idea according to which only a few can innovate, while the masses need esprit de corps. Deleuze and Guattari, in Mille plateaux, proposed a ‘revolutionary’ laudative reading of esprit de corps in their influential chapter on the ‘war machine’. The authors opposed nationalist hegemonies and the state ideologies of grands ensembles by advocating a return to the esprit de corps of small-scale autonomist and creative communities.

The current study sought to identify which aspects of perceived significant other and personal religiosity (i.e., private, coping, conviction, social, and conservatism) predict RSB in emerging adults and how this might differ by gender. The sample (N = 275; 72% female, 28% male) consisted of adults aged 18–25 years (mean = 19.31, SD = 1.42) attending a large Southern university and used the Stearns–McKinney Assessment of Religious Traits scale and Student Sexual Risks Scale. For males, significant other private religiosity and personal conservatism predicted RSB. For females, significant other private religiosity and religious coping as well as personal conviction and conservative religiosity predicted RSB. Thus, religious traits and gender differed regarding the prediction of RSB of emerging adults.
