Hunt, Rex A. E., of Western Sydney Hawkesbury University, and of Agriculture Horticulture and Social Ecology Faculty. "Philomythes : religious narrative communication in an electronic age." THESIS_FAHSE_XXX_Hunt_R.xml, 1993. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/331.

Abstract:
It is the author’s thesis that religious communication which is shaped by narrative has consequences that are different from communication based on persuasion by argument. While ‘narrative’ can include both written and spoken communication, this study attempts to concentrate on oral narrative communication in a group situation within a local church congregation. It is also an assumption of this thesis that there is a common belief that narrative is subordinate to rhetoric. This thesis sets out to suggest otherwise: that while both provide distinctive ways of ordering experience the two are irreducible to one another. Thus there is a need to reimagine the narrative communication debate. This thesis suggests this reimagining be called ‘narrative/symbolic’ – thus emphasising its narrativity. Narrative /symbolic communication : encourages reflection but is different from analytical, rationalistic thinking; is heuristic by nature, searching for likely accounts rather than definitions and conclusions; establishes an awareness of/ communion with the world of the other rather than just seeking after/interpreting meaning; has potential to broaden human conversation by repudiating mere individualism; and, is more faithful to the general shape of the religious tradition which is Christianity. Such a ‘style’ should shape religious communication in the electronic media-saturated age.

Brown-Bennett, Amanda-Louise. "How do religious leaders experience the psychological distress of their congregation? : an interpretive phenomenological analysis." Thesis, City, University of London, 2017. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/19879/.

Full text
Abstract:
Religious leaders are at the forefront of religious faith and considered to be the gateway between humankind and God in all things, from matters of a spiritual kind, to the psychological. Whilst religious leaders may be acquainted with the spiritual realm, how do they perceive their engagement with the psychological? Furthermore, how do they manage the psychological distresses that they encounter given their pivotal position within the community? This empirical study explores how religious leaders experience the psychological distress of their congregation using the methodological approach of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Eight religious leaders gave an account of their experiences through semi-structured interviews, the transcripts of which were then analysed implementing IPA protocol (Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2009). Four superordinate themes emerged from the data: ‘expectations of religious leadership’, which explored the participants’ experiences of the expectations placed upon them and their role; ‘proficiencies and limitations within the role’, which explored how the participants understood their professional remit in regard to providing psychological support; ‘the interconnectedness of religion and psychology’, which provided an insight into the participants’ experiences of the overlap between the fields of psychology and religion, and their contribution to each other; and ‘personal implications of religious leadership’, which explored the psychological impact of the religious leadership role on the participants. The four themes were discussed in relation to the religious leaders’ encounters with psychological distress. For most participants this was an external encounter, but reports of personal psychological distress were also presented. The findings have implications for Counselling Psychologists who work with religious individuals entering into therapy, and in particular those with religious leadership status. This study explores the link between religion and psychology from the perspective of those integral to this phenomenon, yet who appear to have received little empirical consideration. The findings are discussed in the light of previous research. The quality and limitations of this study are also considered, alongside proposals for future research.

Abstract:
This research is structured to analyse the reports of religious change produced by the members of the Nazarene Church in Ricardo de Albuquerque. How individuals articulate their experiences, their reasons and explanations, were addressed to describe what the religious change causes to the new members identity. It was found that most of the transit concentrated among evangelical churches, though most have been brought up as catholics. It is noticeable, on the one hand, that the choices of members reacts to the disenchantment, the secularization of the main religions, toward a re-enchantment of the world, in a society that contributes increasingly less with steady elements for the construction of their identities. On the other hand, the transit within the evangelical segment highlights subjective processes of construction of a broad evangelical identity by the bricolage of alien elements in relation to the Nazarene’s theology. This exemplifies the concept of deregulation of religion, the increasing difficulty that the churches face in the ongoing process of defining their own outlines, concepts, practices and limits.

Abstract:
The present questionnaire study examined attachment-religion connections among 175 believers from Christian congregations within the Læstadianism revival movement in Sweden and Finland. Results generally supported the study’s hypotheses, thus partly replicated, and extended previous research. Replicating previous research, reports of secure attachment predicted the adoption and transmission of Christian beliefs and values. Reports of relative insecure attachment was linked to aspects of religious changes and predicted religious changes occurring in a life-context of emotional turmoil. Results for emotional compensation were, however, not consistent with previous research. Reports of secure attachment predicted emotionally-based religiosity and insecure attachment did not predict the intensity/suddenness of the religious change. Extending previous research, reports of secure attachment predicted the adoption and transmission of the congregation's Christian standards and perceived religious support from one's congregation. Findings are discussed in the context of the Læstadian population of the study.

The research purpose was to analyze the Congregation of São Pedro Ad Vincula trajectory in Mara Rosa-GO, which icon is the Priest Lorenzo Martinez Arias. This priest came to the town of Mara Rosa in 1961 to take on the Santo Antônio de Pádua Parish (in Amaro Leite), remaining in the position of vicar until his death, in 1995. It is worth noting that we searched on Priest Lorenzo s mailing, the representations built by him around the people and place, as well as around himself, his priesthood and the role he exercised. The sources used on the research were: the data collection entitled Priest Lorenzo s writings , documents that belong to the book tumble in the Santo Antônio Parish in Mara Rosa. We also used two small books about the congregation history written by Ad Vincula priests. Another source was the Congregation blog in Brazil. The results we reached made it possible to apprehend that priest Lorenzo extended his role as the São Pedro Ad Vincula Congregation missionary beyond the religious field. He exercised other activities as vicar. He was also near the local politics, offering support and incentive on the realizations and projects that could bring benefits to town and its people. And, at the same time, he was analyzing, arguing and, sometimes, criticizing the government actions. He also appears involved on education. Firstly, on the Congregation School and, after, on the public service as the Colégio Estadual Presidente Castelo Branco principal. We concluded that the priest s realizations are fruit of his comprehension on the role he had to fulfill as a missionary, regarding his congregation: sacrifice himself for it. Which means, make it prosper in relation to the local people, bring them some civility and make them participants of the Catholic Church. In the end, the dedication with which he fulfills his mission can be understood as a consequence of the representations he made about himself, and of its salvific mission: the congregation itself and its souls

Abstract:
This study examines sources of clergy stress and ministers' coping strategies. The aim was to investigate Calvinist worldviews and their effects on Presbyterian ministers' choice of coping and stress levels. Specific hypotheses and questions were derived from process-stress theory and applications in the psychology of religion, as well as from secularisation theory. The author designed and conducted three separate, related studies. The first used 54 theological students comprising the pre-ministry stage. The second, focal study was of 65 parish ministers of the Presbyterian Church in NSW. These groups were chosen for an intensive study of the influence of Calvinist beliefs on stress and coping over two stages of ministry. The third surveyed 363 adult church attenders of Presbyterian congregations in NSW for specific analyses of stress-coping processes. Data were obtained through scales, questionnaires and interviews with parish ministers. Presbyterian students scored high on religious commitment but low in their endorsement of Calvinist beliefs. Presbyterian congregations also scored high on religious commitment and moderately high on their endorsement of Presbyterian beliefs. Major findings related to attributions and religious coping. Congregational members attributed life crises and hassles to God's allowing the situation, together with other human causes. Ministers had high religious commitment and agreement with Calvinist beliefs. One third scored at clinical levels of anxiety and burnout. Stress levels were strongly related to using an external locus of coping and less strongly to deficiencies in training and equipment for ministry. These stress levels were not directly related to role conflict or specific situational measures. Overall, findings pointed to inadequacies in process-stress theory for examining occupational stress. Ministry stress was best explained as a consequence of attempts to live out a Calvinist ideal in the absence of institutional and social legitimation

Abstract:
Aim. While there is much talk of an emerging interest in spirituality in Australia, there is evidence of a declining affiliation with the established Churches. The impact of mainstream Christianity in these circumstances would appear to be waning. The continued attention given to the Church in the wake of these realities and that of the Church's dealing with situations of sexual abuse has often focussed around the way in which the Church has used its power and influence. While undoubtedly there is much evidence of the Church's service and care for its members and those most in need, more questions are being asked about the accountability of those who minister within the boundaries of Catholic Church structures, and the healthiness of those very structures for helping the Church to live out its mission with integrity. Further questioning has often been around the perceived intent of Church authorities, as seen by many, to return the Church to times prior to the Second Vatican Council when clerical authority was unquestioned. There are divergent viewpoints as to whether the call of the Council for wider involvement of lay people in Church decision-making and structures is in the process of being reversed. The researcher, coming from his experience as a member of a Catholic Religious Congregation of Men, is interested in looking broadly at the issue of how power is used in the Catholic Church, with a particular focus on a case study of one Group of Male Religious in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. The aim of the study is to provide further insight into use of power in the Catholic Church, and to offer some recommendations for future use of that power in a healthy and constructive way for the benefit of the Church and, ultimately, all of society. Scope. A Literature Review was carried out to investigate the broader issues of how power may be defined. A multitude of answers emerged, resulting in a rich understanding of power and some specific related factors: gender, hegemony, patriarchy, authority, leadership, empowerment and networks. Following these explorations around how use of power may be understood, examination of issues relating to abuse of power took place. Given this background, attention was then given to issues of power in relation to Church structures. With these learnings, the researcher conducted five focus groups of people who had relevant knowledge of the male Religious Congregation in Melbourne, which was the specific case study for this research. The groups included current members of the Congregation, former members, staff members in schools run by the Congregation, former students and a women's group. The study was restricted to one specific Congregation, the 'Brothers of St Charles' [fictitious name], in Melbourne, in order to provide a particular and manageable focus. While limited in scope, the study provides an analysis of the focus groups and a linking between this analysis and the Literature Review. Conclusions. The study finishes with some reflections by the researcher on the learnings of the study and recommendations arising from the study. Central place is given to the quality of relationships of those engaged in ministry on behalf of the Catholic Church. An interplay of personal and Church/Congregational factors is proposed in order to provide some qualitative assessment of the effectiveness of such relationships. In order for ministers to take up and use their power in an enriching way for themselves and particularly for those to whom they are called in service, recommendations are made around the need for learning about use of power as part of formation for Church personnel, around encouraging ongoing personal growth in those in Church ministry, around the importance of engaging in processes of healing where people have been hurt by past inappropriate use of power, and around the need to continually critique and challenge existing Church structures where there is injustice through lack of inclusivity.

The present thesis is a study of the religious tradition and transmission of the Christian Congregation in Brazil in an area of deep social vulnerability. The study is carried out in the light of the institution and its members. Religious reproduction in the contemporary scene of modernity is difficult due to the diminishing capacity of religious institutions to regular the beliefs of its faithful. It is exactly this capacity of the Christian Congregation in Brazil that is analyzed in a situation of social vulnerability in the front region of São Bernardo do Campo and Diadema. The social dimensions of the Christian Congregation in Brazil are studied in the light of a statistical overview of Brazilian pentecostalism. The social reality of the location is carefully analyzed as well as the specific peripheric situation of the area under study. An ethnography of the worship of the Christian Congregation offers the data to analyze the cultic performers, the ritual process and the function of cultic worship that help to articulate religious identity. Finally, in the light of detailed interviews and field observation the thesis presents an ethnography of its members both men and women, in situations of differentiated vulnerability. The thesis studies both the internal and external social network the members create. The thesis takes a close look to see how doctrines and the practice of the Congregation as transmitted in ritual (ritual as a privileged source of institutional reproduction) succeed in forming the subjectivity of its faithful, understood as the complex set of perception, affect, thought, desire and fear.(AU)
É analisada a realidade social local e elaborada a situação periférica específica do bairro estudado.

Abstract:
In recent years, growing numbers of Mainland Chinese elders are participating in Christian congregations during short visits or extended stays in the U.S. This thesis explores social and cultural factors that explain these immigrant elders’ involvement with Christianity while in the U.S. Based on face-to-face interviews with 20 Mainland Chinese elders living in Atlanta as well as participant observation at a Chinese Christian church and with a Bible study group, this study finds that loneliness and social isolation in a foreign land are the main reasons for Mainland Chinese elders’ participation in Christian activities. Besides religious services, social service functions of churches and opportunities for fellowship are other factors explaining church involvement. Long immersion with China’s religious history of syncretism renders these elders receptive to spiritual alternatives, such as Christianity, especially when dominant ideologies of Confucianism and Communism seem to be in decline in China. But most elders approach their Christian involvement with pragmatic selectivity based more on secular than religious considerations. In conclusion, I argue that social isolation and minority ethnic status, Chinese Christian Churches’ social functions, and current social contexts in China are all factors that help explain Chinese elders’ religious involvement in the U.S.

Abstract:
In this essay I present the ecclesiology of the Salvation Army as it appears in Sweden today. One thesis that I examined is that the Salvation Army has changed its self-understanding from seeing itself as an Army from the beginning of the movement, to gradually understanding itself as a Church. The essay confirms this assumption and concludes that it is largely due to the challenges of ecumenical theology that developed with the publication of the BEM document in 1982, adopted by the World Council of Churches' Faith and Order Commission. Further, statistics show that 3 out of 4 new members of the Salvation Army in Sweden are what are Adherents, defined as a type of civilian membership, and not uniformed soldiers. The purpose of the essay has therefore been to explore what the change of membership, from soldiers to adherents, has meant for the ecclesiology of the movement. I have captured both of these assumptions, that the Army understands itself more and more as a church and that most new members are Adherents, when I have formulated the overarching research question: How does a growing proportion of Adherents play into the Salvation Army's gradually changing self-understanding from army to church? In the essay, I have used a qualitative research method which includes a hermeneutic approach where I interpret the changes and observe to understand its consequences for the ecclesiology that appears in the Salvation Army. The essay discusses the "army concept" which implies a “mission-oriented” ecclesiology and the "church concept" which implies a "community-oriented" ecclesiology. My source material consists of both written dogmatic material, observations of enrolling of both soldiers and adherents in Corps and interviews with new members. I note that the ecclesiological themes that appear in my materials are somewhat different. The written material has some army rhetoric, which means that in addition to a community-oriented ecclesiology one can also see a mission-oriented ecclesiology, while the observations and especially the interviews give a clearer picture of a communion-oriented ecclesiology where the congregation also appears as a sacramental communion. The likeness of ecclesiology between the Salvation Army to other free-churches in Sweden is so profound that I propose the idea of “free-church salvationists” in the army in Sweden. In the essay, I state that a probable further ecclesiological development may be that the more Adherents who become members, the more communion-oriented ecclesiology will implicitly appear in the Salvation Army in Sweden and at the same time the army rhetoric will gradually disappear. This means that the Salvation Army in Sweden may in the near future be described as "an army without soldiers".

Abstract:
This phenomenological study examines the impact image-making experiences had on the leadership restructuring of a women’s religious congregation. Six Catholic women religious ranging in ages 65-85 participated in an arts-based workshop informed by art therapy theories to explore the meaning of making art during their Province Chapter meetings in which leadership restructuring was on the agenda. In addition, 42 of the 80 Province Chapter delegates responded to a survey about their experience. The data collected includes the survey, the workshop process, the images made by the six participants, their verbal sharing about their image, and their written reflections. Five common themes emerged from the study which speak to the impact the imagemaking process had on the organization’s leadership restructuring. Increased participation, enhanced communication, emergence of new ideas and insights, awareness of feelings, and embracing a sense of mystery or unknowing each affected the re-organizational process in a different way. The findings imply that art therapy theories and art therapists can benefit not only individuals in the clinical setting but also organizations and communities.

This study had the purpose to research, analyze and understand the St. Carlos College‟s historical process, established by the Sisters‟ Congregation of St. Carlos Borromeo - Scalabrinians in 1936 in Caxias do Sul. Thinking in school cultures that institution, sought to construct a historical narrative contemplated his daily life: subjects, practices, spaces and times lived in St. Carlos College. The study was based on theoretical assumptions of Cultural History. The sources used were written documents (reports, projects, teaching guidelines, school movement, etc.). and produced photos and archived by the institution, as well as documents the João Spadari Adami‟s Municipal Historical Archives So, I tried to interpret in a less homogenizing way the school‟s world, developing a larger view regarding school practices through the enhancement of everyday actions, professionals, its history and gender issues. The text was organized into four chapters: the opening remarks with a brief emphasis on how the research process was, in Chapter 2, the historical context of the decades from 1930 to 1970 of Caxias do Sul, portraying the role of women in the Caxias do Sul society, their education and training of the Congregation Scalabrinian. In chapter 3, I analyzed how this congregation was structured in Caxias do Sul and its educational activities with the creation of the St. Carlos College. Finally, in Chapter 4, I discussed the school practices of the institution in relation to their students, rituals and routines. In the final considerations, I conclude by stating the importance of women's role and their educational process through the Carlist congregation‟s agency. Disseminating a vision of women purity, the Sisters have advocated the girls‟ education providing knowledge through many courses that were offered by the college. Acted educating these girls, considering what the Church craved as ideal for women. Then, the College's work educating the Caxias do Sul‟s women was a great work, but not only that. Telling the history of this institution, it was contributed to thinking about education in Caxias do Sul and in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the female enrollment, contribution and interfaces between school and church, among other things, in historical perspective.

Abstract:

Much has been said recently about the decline in both political and non-political civic participation in the United States. Many American religious congregations, however, continue to stand strong as voluntary associations connecting people with the political and civic life in our country. This paper explains the role that religious congregations can play as promoters of civic engagement. Specifically, it describes the mechanisms by which religious congregations can provide what I call civic resources to their members, resources members utilize to participate in other forms of civic activity outside of their congregation. These resources can be broken down into three main categories. Civic skills are the communication and organizational abilities that an individual can draw upon to make participation more effective. Congregations provide opportunities for members to gain experience using such skills when becoming involved in church governance or in organizing church committees to take on special tasks or put on special events. Social infrastructure captures the value of the social networks and organizational resources available to members of a congregation. The tight-knit social community within a church serves as an effective network to spread relevant information or recruit volunteers for any collective activity. Finally, there are a number of psychological resources a congregation can bring to bear on an individual. Oftentimes the religious teachings of congregations encourage members to adopt civic-minded values and attitudes that serve as a strong motivation to participate

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to try to find answers to how active worshipers of different ages experience the praise song as worship in the worship service. What does the song of praise mean to them and what purpose and function it fills. Song and music have always been a central part of Christianity and the Church of the World, and not least in its worship services. If this testifies to the infinite amount of songs and songbooks that emerge because of the church's rich music life. Likewise, singing vocals today is also strongly associated with the church just underlines this even more (Fahlgren, 2013). But what are the underlying factors that matter when singing or playing these songs and what function does it fulfill for the worshipers?  The method of the survey is a qualitative interview study. The study comprises seven people, three men and four women, all of whom have been active in an Equmenia congregation for at least five years.  The result shows that the biggest difference in respondents' view of worship and their view of it lies in the age difference. Where the older participants consider themselves less dependent on the emotional touch during the song of praise. And uses more worship to mission. While the younger participants in the study claim to be more dependent on "feeling a feeling" when they worship, and that the songs, should be available to all.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the factors associated with religious switching among Latinos in Chicago churches. In the last few decades, some scholars have suggested that there is a growing trend among Latinos away from Catholicism and toward conservative Protestantism. Drawing on insights from previous literature on religious conversion more broadly, and from literature on ethnic and immigrant congregations, I examine the possibility that the way a church meets the various needs of congregants is associated with religious switching. More specifically, I explore whether having one's social, spiritual, and material needs met through one's congregation is associated with switching from participation in a Catholic church to participation in a Protestant church. To explore these potential associations, I use data from the Chicago Latino Congregations Study (CLCS), a multilevel study of predominantly Latino congregations in Chicago and the churchgoers who attend them. Using multilevel modeling, I examine both individual congregant-level factors and congregation-level factors, including characteristics of church leaders, and their association with religious switching. The results of this analysis suggest the importance of examining whether or not congregations have formalized ways of incorporating new members into the church, and whether or not the church leader is directly involved with helping congregants meet material needs such as finding a job. Also, results demonstrate that these two factors are more commonly found in evangelical and Pentecostal Protestant churches in Chicago than in Catholic churches. I propose that when congregations employ methods of reaching out to potential new members in personal, individualized ways—such as a church leader directly helping a potential new member with finding a job—affective ties are established and nurtured, setting the ground work for religious switching.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the importance Kentucky's religious denominations played in the development and transformation of early Kentucky (1770's to 1830). This thesis will show that though federal and regional governments may have created the laws that established newly opened territories, it was often the denominations that played an important role in the creation of that community and stability of the wider societies. Beginning with camp meetings this thesis will argue that denominations began the process of creating community by actively placing these meetings outside the bounds of early congregations and into the backcountry. In doing so denominations brought outsiders, in many cases for the first time, into direct contact with the denominations. This thesis will also argue that denominations developed a new form of worship that was more inclusive and more communal, allowing for wider participation by settlers, especially by women, children, or slaves at these meetings. This thesis will then turn its attention towards the ideas and concepts of the local congregation. This thesis will argue that the local congregation was ideally situated to reinforce the beginnings of community which were established with camp meetings. Through activities such as the calling of ministers as well as the election of elders, deacons, and other lay positions in their local congregation, settlers became active members of the local congregation and entered into a deeper connection with the community. The local congregation offered settlers access to an institution that was both local and communal. Finally this thesis will turn towards a study of physical church buildings arguing that such buildings expressed and reinforced concepts of community and stability. This thesis will argue that over time those congregations that had access to a church often found stability and security. This thesis will also focus on the layout of churches arguing that denominations strengthened already established and shared ideas of community within their congregations through these layouts. By understanding how denominations created community within Kentucky this thesis will argue that the denominations played an important role within newly established territories and that only through a study of these denominations can one begin to understand how the process of western expansion was able to succeed.

Abstract:

This qualitative study investigated the information culture and beliefs within two United Church of Christ congregations in Northeast Ohio. One congregation was Open and Affirming (ONA), and one congregation was not. ONA refers to a congregation's decision to be listed as a place where LGBT individuals—in particular—are welcomed and accepted. Using a purposive sampling technique, 8 focus groups of 4-8 participants each were asked to discuss content derived from three research question areas: participant beliefs, information that participants used to inform these beliefs, and how this information was used.

Analysis found that both congregations espoused the superiority of their beliefs about inclusivity, thus creating a paradox whereby their inclusivity involved excluding beliefs of exclusion. Because the ONA congregation preferred a personal expression of belief, they were more comfortable with the potential divisions caused by this paradox than the non-ONA congregation, which preferred a communal expression of belief.

Analysis also found that most participants relied heavily and placed great authority in information from internal sources, e.g., prayer, meditation, and emotion. The ONA congregation reflected the presence of more unique information, indicating that they approached the Bible and other common religious information critically and with more freedom to come to different conclusions than fundamentalists and biblical literalists.

Despite these differences in belief expression and information type, the analysis found that both groups showed evidence of Chatman's Small Worlds theory. First, participants showed evidence of unmet information needs. Many lacked confidence in the ability to articulate personal beliefs. Second, participants noted the presence of long-term attendees who determined the relevancy of incoming information. Finally, participants tended to guard against disclosing information about personal problems to other congregants, preferring to anonymously seek out answers.

The research highlights the social nature of belief formation and the impact of religious tradition, pastoral sermons, and external information on these beliefs. It contains important implications for pluralistic communication and the social nature of organizational legitimization. It extends the literature on belief formation and information science by developing mid-range theories about the processes by which individuals in religious communities use information to form beliefs.

Abstract:
Religious congregations occupy a unique social space in contemporary American society. Although participation rates have declined since the 1950s, congregations continue to attract more members and resources than any other voluntary form of association. Congregations have also not been immune from the dramatic social and cultural changes in the broader society. These external changes propel many congregations to undertake structural and cultural adaptations in an effort to survive in a changing environment. This dissertation explores the relationship between change and conflict in congregations by studying a population of congregations in a dynamic environment, the American Southwest. Using conflict as the dependent variable in a binary logistic regression model, the research considers the effect on conflict of a variety of changes that occurred in these congregations over a five-year period. Controlling for classic organizational variables such as size and age, the results indicate that changing a congregation's decision-making structure and/or adding or deleting a worship service significantly correlate with conflict. Also, congregational leaders are at greater risk of leaving during or following a conflict. The findings support the assertions of conflict theory that power is a critical variable as well as neoinstitutional arguments that structure has a symbolic as well as a functional purpose in organizations. They also point to the importance of ritual in congregational worship and to the possibility that conflict is more likely when a disruption of ritual occurs. Finally, the findings suggest that leaders have a critical role in congregational change and conflict, although the reciprocal nature of that role (in both initiating change and being held responsible for it) cannot be fully uncovered. More research is needed on the nature of the relationship between worship changes and conflict in congregations, as well as on the role and function of leaders.

Abstract:
The Mariae Vitae Congregation was the first and possibly the most important missionary institution in Poland-Lithuania in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. According to the Rule of Mariae Vitae Congregation, it had to deal with religious and lay education of converted girls (mainly Jewish) and provide them with practical skills of work so they could establish in Catholic society. The innovatory social program of Mariae Vitae Congregation including education and financial help answered to possible problems of neophytes in Poland and Lithuania of that time.

Abstract:
Conflict in religious organizations is certainly not new. Conflict has been implicit in much of the theorizing on religion's social organization and its relationship to social change. Despite the clear and far-reaching implications of conflict for religious organizations, especially congregations, we know relatively little about why these conflicts occur and what they are about. With this project, I answer some basic descriptive questions about congregational conflict by capitalizing on nationally representative data from the National Congregations Study (NCS), and I build on these and other findings to move the study of congregational conflict beyond descriptive facts and toward explanation by asking: Why do congregations experience conflict? Why do congregations argue about some issues and not others? Existing literature suggests several key components to an explanation of congregational conflict: theological orientation, engagement with the secular world, organizational structure, racial diversity and internal change. I test a series of hypotheses and conclude that overall, organizational structure and internal change are most clearly related to rates of conflict in religious congregations. Theological orientation and engagement with the secular world do not show the hypothesized relationships, and it is difficult to evaluate the effect of racial diversity on congregational conflict.

Abstract:
Religious congregations and social work have long been a neglected field of research. Although the number of studies have increased during the last twenty years. With a starting point in the situation in this field of research and in the current public debate in Sweden the focus of this study will be on how Christian and Muslim congregations view cooperating with the municipalities, organizations, the religious community to whom which the congregation belongs and how the congregations view cooperating with other religious communities. Qualitative method of research was used. Representatives of four religious congregations was interviewed; a deacon in a congregation in the Swedish Lutheran Church, a pastor in a congregation belonging to the Mission Covenent Church of Sweden, the chairman in a the board of a Muslim congregation and volunteerleader in another Muslim congregation. For analyzing the transcribed interviews the method of sentence – categorization was used and institutional theory, political opportunity structure and Bauböcks theory of integration was applied. The result showed the degree and form of cooperation varies between the congregations but all four congregations are overall positive towards cooperating with the municipality, organizations, the own religious community and other religious communities.

Abstract:
Religious institutions have been tax-exempt from almost all taxes for more than two centuries. The two primary justifications used to protect this ‘status’ is the constitution and the concept that churches provide positive externalities that believers and non-believers all benefit from. This paper examines the relationship between religiosity and five socially important characteristics: high school graduation rate, a divorce rate, incidence of domestic violence, and levels of substance abuse and crime. I run multiple simple and full regressions across 207 counties in Texas. In four of the five analyses, religiosity has a strong statistically significant desirable impact. With the addition of control variables, other explanatory variables like median household income and number of divorces have coefficients with greater magnitude but the same statistical significance as that of religiosity.
