Wasser, Eric L. "How does the ritualist conceptualize the educational elements around the brit milah process?" Thesis, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3567685.

Full text
Abstract:

How does the ritualist conceptualize the educational elements of the brit milah process?

Jewish educators function in diverse roles and venues. Teachers formally instruct in classroom settings, camp counselors informally teach in the bunk or dining hall and clergy teach about our Jewish tradition by carefully planning experiential education programs, preaching from the bimah (podium), chanting from the lectern and carrying on their daily activities in synagogues. In accord with an expansive vision of Jewish education, I suggest that ritualists too, through language and action, teach fundamental aspects of Jewish life as they interact with others in the context of guiding families through life-cycle events.

This dissertation examines the interactions of the ritual leader or circumciser referred to as the mohel during the life-cycle rite of passage of ritual circumcision or brit milah. I examine the mohel's educational work by describing his interactions with celebrant families and their guests before, during and after the ritual ceremony. After reviewing aspects of ritual theory and educational theory, I employ Schwab's four commonplaces of education as the lens through which to determine how ritual affects pedagogy and, as a corollary, how pedagogy is affected by ritual structure. This study explores the conceptualizations of seven prominent mohalim, three of whom were studied in-depth over a seven month period. I used a mixed methods qualitative research approach by conducting in-depth interviews, observing mohalim in their natural settings and conducting follow-up interviews. In addition to material gathered from these interviews, data collection included field notes, transcription recordings and artifact collection.

The data analysis shows that mohalim employ a number of teaching styles and orientations and accommodate multiple meanings during the brit milah process. Additionally, through their interactions, mohalim implicitly teach about both ritual structure and Judaism in general.

A conclusion of the research shows that both through their actions and use of ritual language, it is the educational goal of mohalim to present and communicate a vision of Judaism as a morally sound way of life, and that by fostering feelings of connectedness, to family, generations, spiritual ancestors, community, the people of Israel, or the heritage of Judaism, people's lives become imbued with great meaning and significance. As two practical implications of the study, I propose nine pedagogic principles of ritual engagement and the expansion of collegial interaction which may serve as useful tools for mohalim as they become more reflective regarding their educational responsibilities. Additionally, this work implies a new way to orient the educational thinking of ritualists in general as they approach their work as a potentially transformative experience found along a continuum of Jewish encounters with celebrant families.

Simpson, Richard. "Elements of Transformational Learning in Small Groups of an Evangelical Christian Church." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10843120.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this grounded theory research study was to discover the transformational learning elements of a small group experience at an Evangelical Christian church that fosters personal transformation. Given the lack of Evangelical Christians experiencing personal transformation within small groups, leaders and teachers could learn much from transformational learning theory that continues to be the predominant framework for research in the area of adult education. The source of data for this study was interviews with small group leaders, teachers, and participants who had experienced a personal transformation while attending a small group. Analysis of the data found that participants faced a variety of circumstances that were personal, meaningful, and transformative, revealing 8 elements, mostly relational, within the small group experience that fostered personal transformation. The concluding theory for this study is that the relational elements of small groups, such as love, care, prayer, and connection create a transformative learning environment where personal transformation is likely to take place through the transparency and development of close relationships with others in the group. Implications of this study include pastors and leaders incorporating relational elements into small groups by taking intentional steps to match individuals, set expectations, set an example, be open and honest, know members, focus on the Bible, be ready to learn, and assess throughout. Creating a life-changing small group experience is an essential mission of Evangelical churches and by incorporating these elements churches can make great strides in fostering spiritual growth and personal transformation in individuals’ lives.

Collins, Casey Ray. "Mapping the Garden of Truth : Buddhist and idiosyncratic elements in the religious space of Shinnyo-en." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52877.

Full text
Abstract:
New Religious Movements (NRMs) are typically understood by observers as deviant, bizarre—even pathological—forms of religion that are born in times of crisis and joined by people in crisis. This understanding, however, overlooks the similarities and often close connections between new movements and more established “parent” traditions. Shinnyo-en is a Buddhist-derived NRM that began in 1930s Japan. It has strong ties to Shingon Buddhism and is also characterized by idiosyncratic practices and an emphasis on its charismatic founding family. Like other Buddhist-derived NRMs, Shinnyo-en is simultaneously contiguous with a parent tradition and distinguished from it. Abandoning the language of pathology, I suggest that we think of NRMs in the modern period as occupying non-locative conceptual “spaces” similar to those of “established” religions, secular spaces, and other ideologies. The very meaning of the name Shinnyo-en 真如苑—the “Garden of Truth,” literally a “borderless garden” (en 苑) of “thusness” (shinnyo 真如, Skt. tathatā)—evokes the image of an expansive, cultivated space. I argue that the space of Shinnyo-en contains two modalities. In its first modality, practitioners and observers see Shinnyo-en as a modernized form of esoteric Buddhism promulgated by the charismatic founding family, which draws on ritual and doctrine inherited from the Shingon school and from Mahāyāna Buddhism generally. In its second modality, initiated practitioners experience Shinnyo-en’s idiosyncrasy, which is a function of unique practices and beliefs that cannot exist apart from the charismatic founding family. The two modalities of the Shinnyo-en tradition are equally important to members, and must be simultaneously kept in mind to best understand this and other Buddhist-derived NRMs. With this map of the Garden of Truth, Shinnyo-en’s idiosyncrasies that have hindered scholarly and popular understanding become more intelligible, especially the profound emphasis on the founding family and the novel practices and hierarchies they introduced.

Clark, Ernest P. "Enslaved under the elements of the cosmos." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13123.

Full text
Abstract:
When Paul writes ‘we too were enslaved under the elements of the world', he means that the elements that compose the cosmos also compose and compromise the flesh and enslave human persons through their bodies (Gal 4.3). This thesis demonstrates that early Jews used the phrase στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου to refer to the material elements – earth, water, air, and fire – and not to elemental spirits or elementary principles. Greek medical tradition understood the material elements to mediate the stimuli (παθήματα) and desires of the body which enslave the soul, and it prescribed a variety of regimens (including νόμος) as παιδαγωγοί to guide a person to wholeness. In his philosophy according to the cosmic elements, Philo promotes the law of Moses – including circumcision and the calendar – as the effective way to be ‘redeemed from slavery' to the flesh, to attain righteousness, and to live in harmony with the cosmos. Paul's epistle to the Galatians opposes this sort of ‘redemptive nomism'. Paul accepts that weak στοιχεῖα compose the weak σάρξ and that they mediate sinful stimuli and desires that lead to the actions of the flesh. However, he denies that the law can make people alive or righteous. Instead, Paul prescribes crucifixion with Christ and new life with the Spirit as the final cure for sin's infection of the flesh made of weak στοιχεῖα. Through faith, Christ will be formed in believers as the Spirit guides them away from the desires of the flesh and produces his fruit in their lives.

This PhD by published work consists of: five single authored articles in refereed journals; two main author articles in refereed journals; four jointly authored articles in refereed journals; a single authored article in a non-refereed journal; one jointly authored book, including five single authored chapters; two single authored chapters in edited books. They were published in the period 2003-2013. None has been submitted for any other degree or diploma by me or any other person. The theme running through these publications is the need for social workers to pay significant attention to issues arising from religion, belief and culture. The research reported highlights the impact of such issues on the lives, experiences, resources and responses of individuals, groups and communities for whom they are important. The work emphasises the importance of developing such understanding and of enhancing knowledge of different ways in which religion, belief and culture impact on the issues that social workers deal with. I suggest that these are essential aspects of culturally competent social work practice which have too often been neglected in both research and professional training. The publications are listed in Appendix 1 (pp 56 - 59). They demonstrate how my thinking has developed over the past decade. They reflect and are, in part, a response to the developing professional, theoretical and political ii context within which I have operated as a social work practitioner, manager and academic over a longer period. The majority are solo-authored. However, I remain committed to collaborative work and recognise that discussions with those researched, my collaborators, and others remain invaluable to the ongoing development of my thinking. Joint authorship declaration forms have been completed, in respect of all relevant publications, and are appended. Eight publications (Art.12, Art.11, Art.10, Art.9, Art.8, Art.6, Art.5 and Art.3) are based on findings from primary research, while Art.1 and Art.2 explore published data or data supplied by others to provide original analyses of particular issues.
The purpose of this research is to understand to what extent the influence of Brazilian colonization interferes or complicates the understanding of Religious Teaching and the relationship between educator and student in the reality we live: a capital, Salvador, with a religious and cultural diversity, with an afrodescending majority. We live with a series of prejudices and religious intolerance that can turn the classes of Religious Teaching not as respectful as they should be, as well as to harm the educational practice, turning classes in a construction site of more prejudices. For this reason, we look at the need of integration between education, religion and culture for the discernment between educator and student, understanding that each one has his/her own experiences and convictions of religious and cultural life, in which tolerance and ethics are basic principles.

Mullins, Nigel Lorraine Griffin. "A perspective on the question of the absence or presence of religious beliefs relating to elements of modern artistic endeavour, with special reference to the life and work of Francis Bacon." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007710.

Abstract:
Preface: An awareness of certain contradictory perceptions and assumptions regarding religious beliefs today and their relevance to art prompted a question which led to the research undertaken in this minithesis. The question was: how significant is the absence or presence of religious beliefs to the modern creative process? The writings of some theologians, sociologists, psychologists, and anthropologists seem to indicate that religious beliefs are fundamental to the functioning of society and the individuals who are part of it. Furthermore, even a cursory study of the history of art will demonstrate the strong bond between pre-nineteenth century image making and organised religion. Today, however, this relationship appears uncertain or even non-cxistant. This is a result of processes which began to gain strength in the nineteenth century: these include the industrial revolution, scientism and materialism. Peter Fuller, stated that among the most central questions affecting art is, "the severance of the arts from religious tradition and their existence within an increasingly secular culture." (Fuller, 1990, p. 189). This statement appears to bring the issues together very neatly. Firstly there is the assertion that religion has nourished and been a vital force behind art through the ages, and that, modern art has lost this source of vitality. Secondly, there is the contention tbat society, since the nineteenth century, has become increasingly secular, and that this has had (and is having) a radical effect on modern art. That art has been divorced from religion and that religion is disappearing, or will do so, is the logical conclusion, according to theorists who insist on institutional religion as the only true form. Some artists, for whom the absence or presence or loss of religious beliefs are important issues, may in this situation experience a creative crisis. In order to address these issues it was necessary to investigate whether religious beliefs are important to artistic endeavour and, if so, what the consequences of the absence of beliefs might be. For this reason, research into the nature of religion and the modem religious situation was initiated. The purpose of the extensive discussion on the nature of religion was to establish definitions of, or a view of, religion which could provide a sound basis for this investigation of the issues that have been outlined. In order to demonstrate whether religious beliefs are important to the creative process, Francis Bacon was chosen for discussion because he appeared to be a modern artist who had no religious beliefs and was thus an ideal example by which the consequences of this could be gauged.

Abstract:
Observing the need for the presence of Religious Education in the school as a base for the holistic formation of the human being, provoked in us a motivation for the construction of this research which seeks, through a perspective of investigation through a bibliographic study, to show the importance of the presence of Religious Education. The main goal is to understand the current proposal of Religious Education in the school and its importance for the holistic formation of the human being. The historical and legal foundations of Religious Education in Brazil are observed based on a brief panorama of the reading of texts of authors who dealt with the evolution of the theme in the LDBEN and in the Brazilian constitutions from the beginning of the Republic, where one can perceive the historical roots of this intertwining of interests; after this we seek to understand the current proposal for Religious Education based on the 1988 Constitution. The legislation proves and presents the current situation of Religious Education in the public and lay space as an optional discipline. This thesis also presents the results of a research of the map of Religious Education in the State of Bahia. An analysis is made of the construction of religious knowledge based on the PCNER (Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais do Ensino Religioso [National Curricular Parameters of Religious Education]), making a parallel of the life cycles with the cycles of education and, of the communal interaction with diversity and new tendencies seeking to show that the school and Religious Education can be a space of understanding and respect for the other. The pedagogical and methodological foundations of Religious Education are also analyzed in terms of curriculum, teacher training and praxis.

Abstract:

Using theories of nationalism from Anthony D. Smith, Benedict Anderson, and Barry Shenker, alterity as discussed by Kim Knott and Jonathan Z. Smith, and conversion theories from Joseph Rosenbloom, Lewis Rambo, and Andrew Buckser, this thesis examines four "snapshots" of Israelite/Jewish history for evidence of the use of conversion as a necessary component of "nation building." Periods analyzed include the Israelite Period, Post-Exilic Ezra and Nehemiah, Second Temple Hasmonean Kingdom, and the Late Antique Mishnaic Period. By analyzing primary sources and related scholarship, this thesis seeks to show that conversion is not only a necessary component of building an intentional community, but also that the early Jewish community leaders employed conversion as a means to ensure the continuity of their people and history.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the teachers' dispositions and logic of actions when faced with a sotuation related to the religious question in two countries that define themselves as secular, such a Brazil and France. this is an ethnographic-inspired study wich mobilizes a comparative education perspective. The research is situated within the field of the Sociology of Education and uses the sociology of socialization and pragmatic sociology as the main theoretical frameworks. Therefore, we analyze the provisions and pinciples of justice in the pratice of Brazilian and French teachers at public colleges. Thus, the queestions that motived the research are : how do the teachers deal with a situation involving the religious question ? Why do they act this way ? What logic(s) of action are mobilized in teaching pratices ? Wich dispositions contribute to the "choice" of the logic action ? How social configurations influence teaching practice with regard to the religious question ? Are there differences between the teaching pratice itself ? To answer these questions, approximately thirty interviews were conducted with Brazilian and french teachers and three public institutions were part of a field observation (two institutions in Brazil and one in France), the two methods giving access to the description of professional situations concerning religions. The liberal logic identified in the pratices of Brazilian teachers and the civic logic favored in France in situations involving the religious questions are different wayss to guarantee secularism. Regarding teachers' dispositions, we have identified hybrid dispositions in Brazilian actions and professional dispositions in the French teaching practice. Finally, we have brought to light a logic of action peculiar to the teaching profession in both countries, what we call the teaching logic

Abstract:

This study analyzes the use of mythical religious speech, contrating and comparing the difference between how the biblical message was conveyed verses the conveyance of the same message in modern times. Through a short analysis, it attempts to show speech has been used trough the ages with some variation at times in order to convey the essence of the sacred message. Finally it discusses the expectations of modern people and it suggests an approach to effectively transmit the message to today's society. It also attempts to convey the message in such a way as to improve prospects for attracting better people to the catholic faith.

Abstract:
Wallace Stevens was profoundly affected by Nietzsche’s declaration of the death of God and his poetry reflects an ongoing struggle to understand what it means to be a poet in an age of disbelief. Although Steven’s early poetry suggests that this loss of belief created a sense of crisis in the poet, his later work indicates a full acceptance, even an embracing, of this loss, recognising it as the inspiration for poesis. The thesis considers Stevens alongside of such thinkers as Nietzsche and (the later) Heidegger and shows how the poet came to regard the shaking of the metaphysical foundations as a gift offering the possibility for poetry.

The objective of this dissertation is to relate the several determining and transforming elements of the so-called modern state, especially by means of analysis of the period between the Sixteenth and Eighteenth centuries. It will show the dynamics of the most important phenomena which served to fuel several conflicts of interest throughout history, whose result was, undoubtedly, the claim for a new state order, apart from covering aspects relevant to those movements which competed in causing deep wounds and significant modifications to the organization and structures of the consolidated modern state. Therefore, we shall borrow from some scholars, especially the thinkers who forged this ideology which dawned at the threshold of the Sixteenth century and became in the centuries to come, a necessary instrument in exercising political power in its myriad forms of domination

Gallagher, Marjory D. "The common life: An element of apostolic institutions of women." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9874.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work, the author explores the origins, development, understanding and praxis of the common life in apostolic religious institutes of women, and the evolution of related legislation. The dissertation attempts to bring together an understanding of the evolution of the common life, its place and meaning for apostolic religious institutes of women, the legislation regarding the common life, and the cultural and societal influences on the legislation and the life of the institutes. The first chapter presents an historical overview of the legislation regarding the common life, from the early days of the Church until and including the 1917 Code of Canon Law. The teachings of the Second Vatican Council constitute the heart of chapter two which analyzes the current legislation relevant to the common life, as well as its formulation, especially as it pertains to apostolic institutes of women. Particular attention is paid to Perfectae caritatis, section 15 (common life) and no. 8 (nature of apostolic institutes), and to selected canons addressing both these issues. Chapter three analyzes and interprets the response of North American apostolic women religious to the conciliar invitation to return to the sources. It traces the most salient efforts at both adaptation and renewal in the areas of the apostolate and the common life. It also points out certain trends which have affected both the understanding and the praxis of the common life. The fourth and last chapter analyzes and interprets implications for the future, in relation to balancing the requirement of the common life, the apostolic thrust of the institute, and the situations regarding membership which are affecting many institutes at present, and no doubt will continue to do so in the future. It recognizes the impact of societal and cultural attitudes, past and present, on both religious life and on ecclesiastical legislation. This chapter focuses on an interpretation of the common life more appropriate to the times and to the nature of apostolic institutes. Finally, some tentative revisions of certain canons are suggested.

Abstract:
The past decades have witnessed ongoing debates on the roles Greek sanctuaries exerted on the formation and development of the polis and the Greek communities in general. Sanctuary placement policies- an issue that is also related to the motivations and interests backing the location of the cult to a given deity- are also themes that have drawn the attention of several scholars. Thus we picked a group of sanctuaries dedicated to Hera (called Heraia/ sing. Heraion), so as to analise them as contextualised and embedded in their respective communities to which they belonged, within a period that goes from the VIII century up to the V century. The Heraia in question were located in Samos, Corynth (Perachora), Argos, Metaponto, Croton, Poseidonia and Selinonte. In order to carry out this research, we focused on the functions of Hera´s sanctuaries as well as on the the actuation spheres of this goddess as far as the polis are concerned. Likewise, we payed due regard for the spatial aspects of the Heraia. Finally, we proceeded to a comparison according to some criteria we selected. We made use of a broad range of documentation, especially archaeological sources, also considering the contributions the ancient texts could make. The study of the sanctuaries of Hera we conducted enabled us to notice the multiplicity of functions and roles of sanctuaries across the Greek world. Therefore, our research contributed to the understanding of the cult of a Greek deity as a historical phenomenon embedded in social practices.

Musoni, Phillip. "Inculturated African spiritual elements in the Johane Masowe weChishanu yeNyenyedzi church in Zimbabwe." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61196.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is in the domain of Church History under a sub theme 'Africanisation of Christianity'. Though Africanisation of Christianity is not a modern-day topic in Church History, this study posits that the theme should continue enjoying attention. The reason to this proposal is that it seems there is again a problem today on how African Indigenous Churches (AICs) interface with local traditional spiritualities in communities in which they are planted. Thus, this current study deals with the blurred interface and religious boundaries between African spiritual elements of faith and traditional Christian spiritual elements of faith as depicted in the Johane Masowe weChishanu inotungamirirwa neNyenyedzi(led by the star) (JMCN) Church in Zimbabwe. The hypothesis of this study is that the traditional African spiritual elements of faith dominate in JMCN Church spirituality at the expense of traditional Christian spiritual elements of faith. It is this unconscious adapting and adopting of 'incompatible' African spiritual elements of faith by the JMCN Church that has whet the appetite to examine whether JMCN Church spirituality can be described as a genuinely Christian. In an attempt to understand the genuineness of JMCN Church spirituality this study grouped AICs into two categories those that are said to be 'undisputed' and those that are said to be 'disputed'.While both groups have inculturated African spiritual elements of faith, this study argues that the undisputed AICs conscious selected compatible African spiritual elements of faith against the disputed AICs who unconsciously selected incompatible African spiritual elements of faith. Accordingly, the spirituality of JMCN (hereafter refered to as the Church) identified by its appropriation of African/Karanga spiritual elements of faith such as praying in traditional sacred caves and baptizing church members in traditional sacred pools and dams. Critical to JMCN spirituality is the removal of faith in Jesus Christ's death, resurrection and faith in the Bible as the word of God for human salvation. These are replaced by belief in the power of water spirits and tsanangudzo dzeMweya, (the sayings of the spirit) respectively. This study uses phenomenological and Theological Reflective approaches for data collection and interpreting of the data. Phenomenological method was used because it has two essential strands; the descriptive and the hermeneutical strands. The descriptive aspect helps the researcher to describe the spirituality of the Church accurately, while hermeneutic phenomenological and Theological Reflective approaches give the researcher the ability to evaluate the spirituality of the Church in light of Biblical Christian spirituality. The research study concludes that the JMCN church moved way from being a Christian Church to another syncretic religious denomination due to its inculturation of incompatible African spiritual elements of faith. This study argues that AICs have the liberty to inculturate local religious spiritual elements to shape their Church spiritualities, but the selection criteria should be carefully chosen to avoid obfuscating central Biblical spiritual elements of faith in the process.

The aim of the thesis is to investigate the presence of elements of the Christian religion on the novel by Rosa at work: Grande Sertão: Veredas. The research grew out of drawing inferences on themes of religiousness in the novel in order to identify the elements of a Christian conception of God in these subjects by connecting them to the main foundations of Christianity, to literary criticism, and trying to see in them a conjunction with narrator’s ambiguous speech. It aims to understand how the narrator, with his matériavertente, a story built from a living history, with religious elements, mainly Christians, involved in the task of narrating. The research also intendeds to recognize the role of literary criticism, particularly, that devoted to a presentation of elements of Christian religiosity aligned to the belief of the characters, and that which, although unlinks the characters of commitment to a religious belief, admits the presence of Christian themes such as sin, salvation and grace, in the riobaldian narrative.

The purpose of this dissertation is to elucidate in what way the rational and the irrational elements frame the human notion of the sacred, according to the philosopher Rudolf Otto. Marked by XX Century s rule of reason, Otto reacts to the Enlightenment, which interprets the sacred solely as metaphysical, moral and evolutional formulations. After the Kantian critique, the knowledge path becomes an impossible way to the understanding of the sacred and of the religious phenomenon. Thus, the author recaptures the sentiment as the origin and the openness of the human search for the divine. Since the experience of the nouminous belongs to the sphere of the sentiment, it follows that it is understood, constituted and characterized by the irrational aspect, for the religious experience has the peculiarity of the mysterious. Given this argument, Otto responds to the Enlightenment Age stating that the mystery of the sacred shall never be encompassed by reason alone. On the other hand, a religion based exclusively on sentiment contributes to the emergence of various self-denominated miraculous, magical religious practices. The theological reflections of such religions tend to mix capitalist exchanges and divine promises of prosperity. Otto reveals himself as a supremely important philosopher in the analysis of many contemporary religious practices which emphasize the emotional aspect. In such religions the exclusion of reason is evident, which the author rejects as inconceivable, given the argument that the rational element is a fundamental component of religion. Hence, Otto s intention, as well as that of this dissertation, is to demonstrate that the religious experience is composed both by the irrational and the rational elements and that only when these two aspects are in a state of healthy balance it is possible to achieve a profound experience of the divine.
