Abstract:
This study is an investigation of Dr. Laura Jane Harper's tenure, achievements, and contributions to Virginia Tech from 1949-1980. Throughout Virginia Tech's history, examples of leadership, scholarship, and service have been recorded about students, faculty, and administrators; however, female administrators are overlooked in these collections. Using archival and interview data collection techniques and historical biographical methods, we will examine Harper's influences to the profession, significant contributions in the areas of scholarship, administration, and as a mentor for minorities and women. Harper was born on August 18, 1914 in Jackson, Mississippi. She attended and graduated from Belhaven College in 1934 with a bachelor degree, a master of science degree in 1948 from the University of Tennessee, and a doctorate in 1956 from Michigan State University. From 1960 until 1964, she served as dean of the School of Home Economics for both Radford College (now known as Radford University) and VPI (now know as Virginia Tech). After 1964, Harper continued to serve as the Dean of the Home Economics College at VPI with additional responsibilities until her retirement in 1980. During Harper's tenure she touched the lives of many and made several contributions to the institution in which she was employed. Harper worked at Virginia Tech as a professor, researcher, department head, and dean for over 31 years in the home economics discipline; however, the legacy she left continues.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents a brief history of the dominant, Anglo-American literary advice tradition from the nineteenth century to the present as well as a state of the art of the existing scholarship on literary advice. We focus on several key moments for literary advice in the USA and in the UK: Edgar Allan Poe’s “Philosophy of Composition” (1846), the debate between Sir Walter Besant and Henry James surrounding “The Art of Fiction” (1884), the era of the handbook (1880s–1930s), the “program era” (McGurl 2009) and postwar literary advice, the rise of the “advice author” in the 1980s and 1990s, and finally advice in the “digital literary sphere” (Murray 2018). The overview captures both the remarkable consistency and the transformations of advice, against the background of changes in the literary system, the rise of creative writing, changes in the publishing world, and the rise of the Internet and self-publishing. It highlights the role of some specific actors in the literary advice industry, such as moguls, women, and gurus, and draws attention to a number of subgenres (genre handbooks, self-help literary advice, and the writing memoir), as well as to counter-reactions and resistance to advice in literary works and in avant-garde manuals. Advice is regarded both in the context of the professionalization of authorship in a literary culture shaped by cultural and creative industries, and of the exponential increase of amateur creativity.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the potential, as well as the limits, of making the superhero Faith Herbert/Zephyr fat. Typically framed as monstrous in western superhero comics, Faith’s fatness is treated textually and visually as if it is not in any way aberrant. The author of this chapter questions whether this representation marks a positive shift in western popular culture in relation to fatness, or whether, in this case, Faith as a monstrous woman has been “defanged” and denied the potential to be subversive of marginalizing norms.

Abstract:
In the past decade, there has been a remarkable evolution of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for biomedical image processing. These improvements are inculcated in the basic deep learning-based models for computer-aided detection and prognosis of various ailments. But implementation of these CNN based networks is highly dependent on large data in case of supervised learning processes. This is needed to tackle overfitting issues which is a major concern in supervised techniques. Overfitting refers to the phenomenon when a network starts learning specific patterns of the input such that it fits well on the training data but leads to poor generalization abilities on unseen data. The accessibility of enormous quantity of data limits the field of medical domain research. This paper focuses on utility of data augmentation (DA) techniques, which is a well-recognized solution to the problem of limited data. The experiments were performed on the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) dataset which is available online. The results signify that different DA approaches have upgraded the accuracies for segmenting brain tumor boundaries using CNN based model.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract 2.5D woven composites have recently attracted much attention in the fields of aerospace and automobile industry due to their excellent properties such as low density, high thermal shock resistance, high specific strength and enhanced mechanical properties. Before the 2.5D woven composites are applied as load-bearing structure, it is necessary to have an in-depth understanding of their mechanical behavior and load transfer mechanism under external loads. In this paper, in-plane tensile tests including longitude direction and transverse direction were conducted for a 2.5D woven SiO2f/SiO2 composites at room temperature. With the full-field displacements and strains retrieved by digital image correlation (DIC) method, the mechanical properties and deformation features of the 2.5D woven composites were obtained and observed. The results show that the composite has a lower elastic modulus and fracture strength in the weft direction, and the warp yarn has weaker mechanical properties than weft yarn in the loading direction due to its crimp feature. Remarkable deformation features of the full-field displacement and strain distributions were observed, indicating that the woven structure has a great influence on the deformation evolution and load-bearing mechanism of the composite. Also, based on the actual geometrical architecture of the composite, a mesoscale finite element (FE) model was established and the deformation characteristics of the material were analyzed. The crimp of the warp yarns causes the local fiber axis to rotate with respect to the global coordinate system, which causes the effective modulus in the global direction to vary. Local coordinate systems were assigned to each node such that the local 1 direction is always parallel to the local fiber axis along the length of the warp yarns, which improves the accuracy of the simulation results. Deformation features of the 2.5D woven SiO2f/SiO2 composites were obtained in FEM simulation and discussed comparing with experimental results.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Fiber breakage occurring in fiber bundles of plain-woven glass fabric composites is investigated under tension/shear biaxial cyclic stress. The experimental results show an existence of the strong effect of biaxial stress ratio on fiber breakage and its accumulation. Under pure tension (uniaxial) loading, the variation of fiber breakage ratio with respect to loading cycles is divided into two stages in the longitudinal fiber bundles. In the first stage, the fiber breakage scarcely occurs. In the final stage, fibers in a fiber bundle are broken remarkably. Under the biaxial cyclic stress, the fiber breakage in the longitudinal fiber bundle is observed in initial fatigue stage. In the case of the biaxial stress with large shear stress component, the fiber breakage is also observed in the transverse fiber bundle. The fiber breakage is accelerated by the combined stress with large shear stress component, which is called the shear constraint effect.

Abstract:
As well known, the corrosion resistance and durability of the material are always considered in the safety design of the materials. In this study, the jute fabric from recycled coffee bags was used to fabricate ecologically friendly composites. Jute fabrics with two kinds of different moisture contents were used to fabricate the natural fiber reinforced composites, and the hot water immersion properties have been evaluated. Additionally, the effects of the hybridization with glass woven fabric laminated structures were also investigated. Jute/Jute laminated composite, Jute/Jute/Glass, and Glass/Jute/Glass laminated hybrid composites had been fabricated by hand lay up method. A preliminary investigation on the effect of moisture contents of the jute fabric on the mechanical properties of the jute and jute/glass hybrid composites was discussed based on the results of 3 point bending test. Moreover, the durability of the composites in the hot water immersion was also evaluated. The effects of hot water immersion on the mechanical properties were investigated by the way of 3 point bending test. The specimens were immersed in hot water maintained at 80°C with the immersion time of 24, 120 and 240 hours. Specimens were taken out from the hot water at the same time and repeated the 3 point bending test after each immersion time and the weight changes had been measured. Results showed that the Jute/Jute composite absorbed water easily, and it could be noted that all of the natural dried composites showed comparable higher water absorbed value to the deeply dried ones. The bending strength after aging decreased remarkably. In particularly, all of the natural dried composites showed higher bending strength than the deeply dried one before aging. However, after 120 hours aging, on the contrary, almost the deeply dried composites showed comparable higher value to the natural dried ones. That could be due to the better bonding between fiber and matrix for the deeply dried composites which decreased the water absorption of the composites. Additionally, the hybrid structure is effective in protecting the composites from water absorbing especially for the Glass/Jute/Glass hybrid one.

Nolan, Brian, Brenda Gannon, Richard Layte, Dorothy Watson, Christopher T. Whelan, and James Williams. Monitoring Poverty Trends in Ireland: Results from the 2000 Living in Ireland survey. ESRI, July 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.26504/prs45.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is the latest in a series monitoring the evolution of poverty, based on data gathered by The ESRI in the Living in Ireland Surveys since 1994. These have allowed progress towards achieving the targets set out in the National Anti Poverty Strategy since 1997 to be assessed. The present study provides an updated picture using results from the 2000 round of the Living in Ireland survey. The numbers interviewed in the 2000 Living in Ireland survey were enhanced substantially, to compensate for attrition in the panel survey since it commenced in 1994. Individual interviews were conducted with 8,056 respondents. Relative income poverty lines do not on their own provide a satisfactory measure of exclusion due to lack of resources, but do nonetheless produce important key indicators of medium to long-term background trends. The numbers falling below relative income poverty lines were most often higher in 2000 than in 1997 or 1994. The income gap for those falling below these thresholds also increased. By contrast, the percentage of persons falling below income lines indexed only to prices (rather than average income) since 1994 or 1997 fell sharply, reflecting the pronounced real income growth throughout the distribution between then and 2000. This contrast points to the fundamental factors at work over this highly unusual period: unemployment fell very sharply and substantial real income growth was seen throughout the distribution, including social welfare payments, but these lagged behind income from work and property so social welfare recipients were more likely to fall below thresholds linked to average income. The study shows an increasing probability of falling below key relative income thresholds for single person households, those affected by illness or disability, and for those who are aged 65 or over - many of whom rely on social welfare support. Those in households where the reference person is unemployed still face a relatively high risk of falling below the income thresholds but continue to decline as a proportion of all those below the lines. Women face a higher risk of falling below those lines than men, but this gap was marked among the elderly. The study shows a marked decline in deprivation levels across different household types. As a result consistent poverty, that is the numbers both below relative income poverty lines and experiencing basic deprivation, also declined sharply. Those living in households comprising one adult with children continue to face a particularly high risk of consistent poverty, followed by those in families with two adults and four or more children. The percentage of adults in households below 70 per cent of median income and experiencing basic deprivation was seen to have fallen from 9 per cent in 1997 to about 4 per cent, while the percentage of children in such households fell from 15 per cent to 8 per cent. Women aged 65 or over faced a significantly higher risk of consistent poverty than men of that age. Up to 2000, the set of eight basic deprivation items included in the measure of consistent poverty were unchanged, so it was important to assess whether they were still capturing what would be widely seen as generalised deprivation. Factor analysis suggested that the structuring of deprivation items into the different dimensions has remained remarkably stable over time. Combining low income with the original set of basic deprivation indicators did still appear to identify a set of households experiencing generalised deprivation as a result of prolonged constraints in terms of command over resources, and distinguished from those experiencing other types of deprivation. However, on its own this does not tell the whole story - like purely relative income measures - nor does it necessarily remain the most appropriate set of indicators looking forward. Finally, it is argued that it would now be appropriate to expand the range of monitoring tools to include alternative poverty measures incorporating income and deprivation. Levels of deprivation for some of the items included in the original basic set were so low by 2000 that further progress will be difficult to capture empirically. This represents a remarkable achievement in a short space of time, but poverty is invariably reconstituted in terms of new and emerging social needs in a context of higher societal living standards and expectations. An alternative set of basic deprivation indicators and measure of consistent poverty is presented, which would be more likely to capture key trends over the next number of years. This has implications for the approach adopted in monitoring the National Anti-Poverty Strategy. Monitoring over the period to 2007 should take a broader focus than the consistent poverty measure as constructed to date, with attention also paid to both relative income and to consistent poverty with the amended set of indicators identified here.
