Abstract:
The effectiveness of a mentoring program for 53 at-risk students was investigated. The investigation followed the similar research models as those previously implemented in higher education settings whereby undergraduate and graduate peers, in good academic standing, served as mentors to students in academic jeopardy. The grade point averages and attrition of a cohort of students on academic probation or warning was recorded during two consecutive semesters. A mentoring intervention was instituted during the second semester. The results indicated that the mentoring intervention had a positive

Academic performance monitoring is traditionally based on feedback approach. A disadvantage of this approach is that any remedial action would be too late to be implemented. Given that higher education institutions are striving towards achieving graduate on time objectives, an innovative feed forward approach is highly needed. The individual factor, self-efficacy, was found to correlate with learning partly through the mediation of training motivation. The contextual factor, interactional justice experienced in the class they previously failed, moderated the effect of self-efficacy on training motivation. Implications for future research

There is growing pressure on public colleges and universities to decrease the time students take to earn an undergraduate degree. There are many factors that slow students’ progress towards graduation. For example, urban universities may have a significant number of non-traditional students who don’t take a full load of courses required to graduate in four years. Also, some freshman students interested in engineering may not be prepared for college and are required to take remedial math and science courses.
