Abstract:
Drought is a major abiotic factor adversely affecting wheat productivity. Water deficit reduces significantly photosynthesis and hence the remobilization of stored assimilate reserves from the stem becomes important sources for grain filling. We assessed the ability of different stem internodes and leaf sheaths to deposit and remobilize reserve assimilates as well as their role in grain yield formation in 6 winter wheat varieties under drought conditions during the period of grain filling. The dry weight and content of water-soluble carbohydrates in the dry matter of stem internodes and leaf s

Entire Thompson Seedless grapevines (to include the root system) were harvested at regular intervals over a two year period. Dry matter, soluble carbohydrates, N and K were quantified on an individual organ basis for each date. The pattern of dry matter partitioning to the roots and trunk were similar from one year to the next. Decreases in dry weight in the roots and trunk were accompained by decreases in soluble carbohydrates. The concentration of K in the roots remained almost constant over the two year period while that of N fluctuated from less than 1% (dry wt basis) to more than 2.5% dep

The fertilizer was labelled with 15N in year 3 to allow quantification of remobilization and uptake. The trees were not allowed to crop in years 1 and 2 and were not thinned in years 3 and 4, thereby establi

The responses of wheat to applications of nitrogenous fertilizer were examined between 1988 and 1990 at 10 sites in South Australia which were considered to be marginally deficient in N. Nitrogen rates ranged from 0 kg N/ha to 150 kg N/ha and the experiments were sown after a range of crops and pastures. Nitrogen often increased early crop vigour and subsequent vegetative growth but significant increases in grain yield occurred at three of the 10 sites only; at the remaining sites there was no significant response or there was a reduction in yield at the highest rates of N. Abstract:
Effects of staking, drip irrigation frequency and fertigated N rate on dry matter partitioning and yield of bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.), grown using polyethylene mulch and mini-tunnels, were determined in two years. In the second year, which had higher early-season temperatures and more hours of direct sunlight, plants were larger, more productive and had larger fruit with thicker pericarps and a higher water content than in the first year. In both years, staked plants fertigated with 31.5 vs. 63 kg·ha-1 N produced higher yields due to increased fruit size and pericarp thickness. Compare

Abstract:
The application of magnesium significantly affects the components of the wheat yield and the dry matter partitioning in the grain-filling period (GFP). This hypothesis was tested in 2013, 2014, and 2015. A two-factorial experiment with three rates of magnesium (0, 25, 50 kg ha−1) and four stages of Mg foliar fertilization (without, BBCH 30, 49/50, two-stage) was carried out. Plant material collected at BBCH: 58, 79, 89 was divided into leaves, stems, ears, chaff, and grain. The wheat yield increased by 0.5 and 0.7 t ha−1 in response to the soil and foliar Mg application. Eucalyptus pilularis Smith seedlings were raised in a glasshouse for 260 days in a phosphorus-deficient forest soil. Over this period, growth was divided into two major phases. Phase 1 was characterized by an initially high but rapidly declining relative growth rate and, at least after 26 days from sowing, a very low rate of phosphorus acquisition. Phase 2, delineated at around 116-134 days from sowing and previously correlated with the degree of ectomycorrhizal development, commenced with an abrupt increase in the rate of both parameters. Over the last 90 days of Phase 1 the roots received an

Flag leaves play an important role in synthesis and translocation of photoassimilates in the rice plant, affecting grain yield; similarly they were believed to be a major source of remobilized minerals for the seeds. At the same time, the seed’s sink strength plays an important role in dry matter accumulation. To investigate the relative contribution of rice flag leaves and seed sink strength to seed mineral accumulation, field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of flag leaf or half-seed removal on seed Fe, Mn and Zn concentration and content.
