Abstract:
When an earthquake happens, one of the most important tasks of disaster managers is to conduct damage assessment; this is mostly done from remotely sensed data. This study presents a new method for building detection and damage assessment using high-resolution satellite images and LiDAR data from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A graph-cut method is used for building detection due to its advantages compared to traditional methods such as the Hough transform. Results of two methods are compared to understand how much our proposed technique is effective. Afterwards, sensitivity analysis is performed to s

The UK Government and local authorities have made commitments to reduce their CO2 emissions. This will require interventions to save energy from buildings to be deployed at scale. Previous studies into energy saving from buildings have predominantly focused on the performance of single or limited numbers of buildings, and a review of current literature indicates that there are significant uncertainties when such studies are extrapolated to project the savings potential of large scale building refurbishment. This is due to over-simplified assumptions that were generally used, which underestimat

Abstract:
<p>An integrated approach with remote sensing, GeographicInformation Systems (GIS) and more traditional fieldworktechniques was adopted to assess the groundwater potential inthe central highlands of Eritrea. Digitally enhanced colorcomposites and panchromatic images of Landsat TM and Spot wereinterpreted to produce thematic maps such as lithology andlineaments. The potential of the Advanced Spaceborne ThermalEmission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data forlithological and lineament mapping was evaluated. Topographicparameters such as surface curvature, slope and drainagesystems were derived

Abstract:
Most of the blood transfusion facilities had adequate space, but lacked some of the basic equipment. Blood collected in these facilities was not adequate to meet the blood needs of the regions. These facilities lacked specialised personnel and some of those practicing blood transfusion were not conversant with blood groups, transfusion reactions and the measures to be taken if a reaction occurs. The findings of this study will be used to strengthen blood transfusion services in these hard to reach regions.

Ross, Timothy J. "Remote sensing applications in an alfalfa capability assessment of saline soils." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28330.

Abstract:
In the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of British Columbia, two types of soil salinity have been recognized; natural salinity (Solonetzic soils) and secondary salinity. Soil salinity of either type can be a significant limiting factor in alfalfa (Medicago sp.) production. Stress-related changes in individual plant colour and plant morphology and invasion of the stand by salt-tolerant forbs and grasses affect the amount and direction of the radiation reflected and/or emitted by growing plants. Remote sensing techniques are capable of measuring that radiation and, therefore, offer the potential for qua
