This study evaluated the cholesterol-lowering property of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from mink. Two strains, Enterococcus faecium MDF1104 and Lactobacillus plantarum MDL1118, were shown to remove cholesterol from broths of natural hen egg yolk and skimmed milk. The cholesterol in hen egg yolk was reduced by 58.15% and 38% by L. plantarum and E. faecium, respectively. Abstract In this first-person recollection, Roberts describes in frank detail an expert witness in a civil rights case on behalf of former inmates subjected to a strip and body cavity search in a women's jail. As Roberts relates, the procedure was monitored by female deputies and conducted en masse, and those who were menstruating had to remove their soiled tampons or pads in front of the group and, in some cases, bleed down their legs and onto the floor. Deputies are alleged to have verbally abused the inmates during the procedure. This case, Roberts says, has opened her eyes to the ways the shame and disgust that menstruation engenders gets deployed to debase disenfranchised women. Roberts asserts that this is a uniquely misogynist form of punishment, meted out by and against bodies and minds that have been colonized by objectification and self-objectification, becoming a grotesque platform to dehumanize women who land on the wrong side of the law and who live in bodies that menstruate.

This work aims to contribute to the creation of networks of online laboratories by proposing the model of a scalable and general purpose laboratory server and its integration into the iLabs network. The lab server has been designed to control heterogeneous devices and can be easily adapted to different fields of application. The communications between the laboratory server and the end user interfaces, and between the laboratory server and the devices are completely mediated by web services. The server model has been applied to the development of an online laboratory on Digital Signal Processing. The laboratory is now part of the iLabs network. The task of integration into the network has stimulated the development of a new interface that minimizes the changes to be done on existing lab servers to join the iLabs network and makes integration independent of server technology. The new interface, named LabProxy, contributes to the iLab Shared Architecture (ISA) and has been included in the software repository of iLabs.

El procedimiento consiste en 1) ampliar la funcionalidad de ReNo-Labs, el servidor utilizado en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) para poner en marcha sus laboratorios de Control de Sistemas, y en 2) implementar un controlador para el robot en Python. This chapter outlines three major transformations in how consumers acquire copyrighted content, and the gradual erosion of ownership rights that accompanied them. Historically, copyrighted works were distributed through tangible copies. In the early 2000s, the first transformation took place through the rise of digital downloads. Second, remote cloud storage allowed consumers to access remote copies through high-speed data connections. The third major shift, to subscription streaming services, is now underway. With each step in this progression, consumers have sacrificed permanence and stability for lower prices and convenience. More importantly, copyright law has failed to keep up with the development of these new technologies. Copyright law has focused on the copy/work distinction to delineate the rights of copyright holders and consumers, but the traditional tangible copy is disappearing from the marketplace.

The evidence that the field of online engineering has matured is overwhelming, particularly as indicated by the number of online laboratories in operation today. The objective of this chapter is to describe several solutions of online laboratories that were built based on the MIT NI-ELVIS iLab and the collaborative development efforts it has inspired. To this end, this chapter will describe the VISIR Platform (Virtual Systems in Reality), developed at the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden, as another good example of an online workbench featuring flexible experiments. Work done at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences towards integrating VISIR-based labs on the iLab architecture will then be detailed as an indicator of future collaborative efforts.

The mainstream adoption of remote laboratories and 3D virtual environments for teaching in the field of electrical and electronic engineering education is continuing to grow. This chapter will investigate opportunities and issues related to the integration of remote laboratories and virtual worlds in this context. Some practical implementations of this integrated approach using the Sun Wonderland project and Second Life will be discussed with a particular focus on the perceived advantages of virtual worlds, e.g. collaborative group working, group awareness/interaction, and the 3D Graphical user interface. From this discussion initial guidelines related to creating a standardized architecture for integrating remote labs into virtual worlds are presented and the role of each individual component of the architecture catalogued.

To this end, the authors developed and applied Automated Internet Modeling (AIM) Lab dedicated to semiconductor device modeling and characterization. Their lab has been extensively used for teaching courses on semiconductor devices at senior and graduate levels. Recently, AIM-lab incorporated additional functionality such as You-Tube compatible on-line video feeds, audio and visual collaboration with peers via web-messaging in order to meet the needs of learning disabled students and make their learning process more effective. In this chapter, the authors focus on recent advances in the development of remote experimentation labs in the context of engineering education with an emphasis on general technological issues and specific experiments offered. Systematic evaluation of educational benefits derived from using these labs will also be presented.

El presente estudio tuvo el propósito de determinar la efectividad del muro digital Padlet para fortalecer la competencia lectora del Inglés como lengua extranjera en la enseñanza remota de emergencia. Se implementó un diseño metodológico cuasiexperimental en el que no se utilizaron procesos de aleatorización o randomización. Los participantes fueron 51 estudiantes con nivel de proficiencia B1 registrados en un programa de formación para docentes de inglés en una universidad privada al sur del Ecuador. Se trabajó con un grupo control conformado por 25 alumnos y un grupo experimental integrado por 26 estudiantes. Se aplicó una encuesta de diagnóstico, un pre-test, un post-test, y una encuesta de percepciones. Los resultados evidenciaron que el uso de Padlet en la enseñanza remota de emergencia tiene el potencial para fortalecer la competencia lectora de los estudiantes y promover su aprendizaje activo. Además, esta herramienta facilita la implementación de actividades efectivas para el desarrollo de las destrezas de prelectura, lectura y poslectura en el idioma inglés. Por lo tanto, se requiere que los docentes realicen una adecuada selección de temáticas acorde a las necesidades e intereses de los estudiantes y brinden retroalimentación permanente durante el proceso de enseñanza.
