Abstract:

Abstract:
In the dense tropical forests of Kalimantan, Apis dorsata produces forest honey with pollen diversity that has the potential to have unique antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This study is aimed to report the physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant activity and antibacterial analysis of forest honey from East Kalimantan. A total of nine samples of forest honey were purchased from local buyers of several regions. The power of hydrogen (pH), water content, diastase enzymes, fructose levels, and glucose levels were measured. Antioxidant activity was measured with ABTS assay. Antibacterial activity was conducted against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and S. enterica serovar Typhi. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) identified antibacterial functional groups. Honey samples from tropical forests in East Kalimantan had pH between 2.93±0.06 and 3.83±0.06, a moisture content between 18.44±0.64 and 25.67±0.29%, fructose levels between 7.85±0.05 and 17.73±0.13%, and glucose levels between 1.24±0.16 and 17.34±0.14%. Goa Tembenus honey showed the highest IC50 antioxidant activity and the highest Diastase Enzyme activity. Goa Tembenus and Bongan honey showed good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative. Minimum inhibitory levels of honey were found at concentrations of 25% and 30%. Honey from tropical forests in East Kalimantan has H2O2 as an antibacterial component.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ren Yi, self-styled Bonian (1840-1895), is rightly considered as one of the most prolific painters in late nineteenth century Shanghai. Like many of his contemporaries, the life of Ren Bonian was much entangled with social and economic change in the international city where new and old, local and foreign enterprises were assembled at that time. On this account his paintings often present a strong visual effect and delightful mood, as well as novelty, popularity and diversity to attract audience and facilitate commerce. This dissertation poses three broad questions: what was the relationship between the changes in society and artistic directions? What role do Ren Bonian's figure paintings play in the social relations of power, including those of class and gender? How do these help us to understand the artistic trends in Shanghai at that time'.' With equal attention given to history and art history, this dissertation provides a solid biography of Ren Bonian and a survey of the world in which painters such as Ren Bonian and his contemporaries lived in the first two chapters. In the third chapter, we explore the sources of Ren Bonian's learning, the roots of and the inspirations for his artistic language. Taking three types of his figure painting as examples, in the following chapter, our concern includes the popular literature, patronage and sexuality that possibly inspired Ren Bonian's choice of subject matter and visual performance. In the fifth chapter, we discuss the influences of both traditional training and the foreign stimuli on Ren Bonian's portraiture. The sixth chapter focuses on the serious problem of forgeries in relation to the rapid growth of his fame brought by Shen Bao and other media through the reproductions of his painting. A seal index and a chronological list of Ren's figure paintings are provided as appendices.

Abstract:
96
Ren Bonian (1840-1895) was an early representative character of the Shanghai School of art. There are copious examples of his work to be viewed today. His style is varied with each piece having its own special characteristics. Because so many paintings are attributed to him, there is a problem of authenticating his true original works. This researcher will try to use Ren Bonian’s known portrait paintings to assist in picture analysis using his known portraits’ inscriptions and signatures. This data will be used to compare the body of uncertain works to choose the most probable works to continue with the authenticating process. This research paper’s focus will be directed at two points (1) Focus on Ren Bonian’s already authenticated work and separate the different time categories to look at his painting development process and style changes. Another goal of this research is to determine which year the works were done by putting the undated pictures into a probable order by style contrast. Ren’s portrait paintings may differ according to possible influences including teachers and artist friends as well as the effect from Western art and Chinese traditional fortune telling practice of face reading which also is drawn on by Chinese portrait artists.. These factors will be studied to apply in the authentication process. Articles written concerning Ren’s art and life will also be drawn on to see if they can assist in reasonably verifying artwork attributed to him and to ascertain the origin of his style. (2) To take Ren Bonian’s work and try to fit it into the authoritative Chinese art history with a look at Ming dynasty artist Zeng Jing’s work with the purpose of understanding his changes to portrait painting to explain the development of that art and to see what effects they had on Ren’s carrying on the tradition and to question whether there are any other portrait artists who have contributed as much as well as to define the true originality of Ren’s works. Finally, this research will expand the discussion by addressing Ren’s life as a professional painter with qualities from the Southern School spirit. With this dual school influence, what position can we best place Ren Bonian?

Abstract:
Looks at portraits of the art world produced by Shanghai’s best-known artist, Ren Bonian (1840-1896). Unique for their near-exclusive focus on art world sitters, these are portraits in which the artist collaborated with their subjects to investigate an array of artistic identities, from conventional renderings of the artist as scholar and gentleman, to unexpected depictions of artists as men about town, failures, sell-outs and beggars. These are images that exceed portraiture’s usual purpose of documenting likeness and social status, instead seeking to comment on the modern Chinese artist’s engagement with a complex and demanding urban market and art world.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that Aemilia Lanyer’s publisher Richard Bonian published the extensive dedicatory material in Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum to appeal to an emerging female reading public. The volume’s permeable boundary between text and paratext also anticipates the replacement of dedicatory poems with commendatory verses in the coming decades. The chapter therefore closes by considering two additional books with an unusual investment in dedicatory and commendatory verse: Coryats Crudities (1611), which inspired a competing book that only reproduced its preliminary verses, and Mary Fage’s Fames Roule (1637), a collection of anagrams and acrostics on court figures. Together, these books reveal authors and their publishers navigating poetry’s uneasy transition from a pursuit driven by patronage to one oriented toward the commercial book trade. In the process, the books also give the reader new insight into the privileged social networks of their authors and addressees.
