A new species of the genus Euthystiroides Zhang, Zheng & Ren, 1995 i.e. Euthystiroides heilongjiangensis sp. nov is described from Heilongjiang, China. The new species is allied to E. dalianensis Zhang, Zheng & Ren, 1995, but differs from latter by head shorter than pronotum distinctly and without black stripe in the middle, tegmina of male narrower, length 4.0 times width; length of interspace 1.9 times minimum width in mesosternum and width of epiphallus almost equal to high.

Abstract:

Nos últimos anos a Reserva Especial do Niassa (REN) enfrenta grandes ameaças relacionadas com a conservação da sua biodiversidade, tais como os incêndios florestais, exploração mineira ilegal, pesca comercial, envenenamento de animais, conflitos homem-fauna bravios e a perda de habitat. O objectivo deste estudo foi de avaliar os critérios para conservação regional da Zebra das planícies da subespécie Equus quagga crawshayi na Reserva Especial do Niassa, que está localizada a 36o25’E de longitude, ocupando uma área de 42.000 Km2 em 1/3 da Província do Niassa e dois distritos de Cabo Delgado. A coleta de dados foi efectuada com o auxílio das metodologias de identificação da fauna com carros, procura dos representantes persistentes e estáticos e a metodologia de armadilhas fotográficas na qual foi recentemente introduzida naquela região. Na análise de dados foi empregue Software computacional de criação de planilhas eletrónicas Microsoft Office Excel 2010 e o programa da ESRI, denominado ArcGIS na sua versão 10.3. A Zebra foi encontrada em 5 das 6 classes de vegetação existentes na REN em busca da vegetação herbácea, água e percorrendo corredores junto com as outras espécies. Os valores da extensão de ocorrência (EOO) (que constitui cerca de 48,96% da área total) e da área de ocupação (AOO) (cerca de 4,62% quando comparada com a área da REN) encontrados neste estudo indicam que a população da Zebra enfrenta uma fragmentação severa na sua área de ocupação porque apresenta maior parte dos grupos de indivíduos isolados uns dos outros na sua extensão de ocorrência, mas também por necessitar de condições muito específicas de habitat e por consequente apresentar seus indivíduos em subpopulações pequenas e relativamente isoladas, aumentando o risco de extinção da espécie.

Dentre outras formas de se obter energia elétrica, a solar fotovoltaica teve um crescimento superior a 30% por ano durante os cinco anos anteriores a 2016 (Kalogirou, 2016). O objetivo deste artigo foi apresentar uma análise técnica e econômica para a instalação de sistemas fotovoltaicos de produção de energia elétrica para consumidores comerciais de pequeno porte. O local escolhido referiu-se a uma Padaria/Mercearia localizada em Mangaratiba/RJ. Para orientar a realização do estudo, foi necessário seguir as normas vigentes relacionadas, REN 482 ANEEL, REN 414 ANEEL, ABNT NBR 5410, RECON BT da LIGHT, e PRODIST. Foi encontrado ao final o valor de R$ 44.081,19 de custo total do sistema. Concluiu-se, portanto, que o tempo de retorno financeiro do investimento é de 3,9 anos, levando-se em consideração que a vida útil média de um sistema fotovoltaico é de 25 anos. Chegou-se ao valor economizado de R$ 282.931,28 ao longo desse período. Não foram levados em consideração possíveis gastos com a manutenção dos inversores e cabos, bem como o reajuste anual feito pelas concessionárias sobre a conta de energia elétrica.

Abstract:

Nematodes of the genus Elaphostrongylus collected from moose (Alces alces L.), reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus L.), and red deer (Cervus elaphus L.), respectively, were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. Morphological differences in the ribs of the genital bursa were demonstrated. The Elaphostrongylus species from reindeer and red deer differed from each other in four ribs of the genital bursa. These results agree with the morphological characters of E. cervi and E. rangiferi described by Cameron (1931) and Mitskevitch (1960). The genital bursa of Elaphostrongylus sp. from moose, in accordance with the description of E. alces by Steen et al. (1989) showed characteristics differing from those found in Elaphostrongylus spp. from reindeer and red deer respectively. These results support the hypothesis that there are three separate species of Elaphostrongylus present in Scandinavian Cervidae. De arter av Elaphostrongylus funna hos ren och kronhjort skilde sig åt avseende fyra stodjeribbor på de hanliga bursorna. Dessa resultat stammer val overens med de karaktarer som tidigare ar beskrivna av Cameron(1931) och av Mitskevich (1960). Den hanliga bursan hos arten Elaphostrongylus funnen hos alg, vilken tidigare ar beskriven av Steen et al. (1989), visade upp ett utseende som skilde sig från bursorna hos de Elaphostrongylus-arter funna hos ren och kronhjort. Dessa resultat stoder hypotesen om tre skilda arter av Elaphostrongylus hos skandinaviska hjortdjur.

Abstract:

Foram determinados peso vivo ao início do período de terminação (PIT), ganho médio diário (GMD), peso de abate (PA), peso de carcaça fria (CAR), rendimento de carcaça fria (REN), espessura de gordura subcutânea (EGS) e idade de abate em dias (IA) de 32 novilhos Braford, machos castrados, previamente desmamados aos 100 (Desmame precoce - DP) ou 180 (Desmame convencional - DC) dias de idade e abatidos aos 13-14 meses de idade. Entre o DC (06/03/01) até o início do período de terminação (09/08/01), quando passaram para uma pastagem melhorada de azevém (Lolium multiflorum L.), os bezerros permaneceram em uma área de resteva de lavoura de arroz. A partir de 04/09/01, os bezerros receberam uma suplementação energética, à base de sorgo moído, até o abate, em novembro de 2001. Os animais foram abatidos conforme avaliação visual da gordura de acabamento, independentemente do peso vivo. Os novilhos do DP tiveram PIT significativamente inferior aos novilhos do DC (182,8 kg vs. 240,5 kg). Entretanto, o GMD foi significativamente superior para os novilhos DP, sendo as médias ajustadas 1,399 e 1,269 kg/dia para DP e DC, respectivamente. O PA e o CAR foram significativamente inferiores para os novilhos do DP em relação aos novilhos do DC (328,8 e 359,4 kg de peso vivo e 174,0 e 186,7 kg de carcaça fria para DP e DC, respectivamente). Os novilhos do DP tiveram REN significativamente superiores (52,9%) aos novilhos do DC (51,9%). Não houve efeito da idade de desmame sobre a EGS, sendo 4,91 e 4,95 mm para o DP e DC, respectivamente. A IA foi influenciada pela idade ao desmame. Os novilhos do DP foram abatidos, em média, com 430,1 dias, enquanto os novilhos do DC foram abatidos, em média, com 416,9 dias de idade.

Abstract:

Background: To explore the prescription rules of famous ancient physicians in the treatment of threatened miscarriage. Methods: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) prescriptions for threatened miscarriage were screened out of Fu Ren Da Quan Liang Fang by Ziming Chen, Yi Zong Jin Jian by Qian Wu, and Fu Qing Zhu Nv Ke by Qingzhu Fu. Data were standardized and analyzed through the TCM inheritance auxiliary platform. Results: A total of 29 prescriptions for threatened miscarriage were screened. Dang Gui, E Jiao, Gan Cao, Chuan Xiong, Bai Shao were the top five frequently prescribed Chinese herbs. The common herb–herb combinations used by Ziming Chen contained E Jiao, Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Ai Ye, Cong Bai, and Sang Ji Sheng. Ren Shen, Gan Cao, and Bai Zhu were the common herbal groups used by Qingzhu Fu. Huang Qi, Shu Di Huang, Bai Shao, Dang Gui, and Gan Cao were one of Qian Wu’s core prescriptions, with Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong being the others. According to the analysis of four Qi, five flavors, and meridian tropism of the prescriptions, herbs with the warm nature, or with the sweet, pungent, bitter flavors topped the list of application. The top six meridian tropisms of high-frequency herbs were: liver, spleen, lung, kidney, heart, and stomach meridian. Conclusion: Based on the principle of restoring the balance within the organs and enriching Qi and blood, clinical treatment of threatened miscarriage involves invigorating the Chong and Ren channels, nourishing Yin, dispelling cold and wind, generating and activating blood, regulating and harmonizing Qi.

Na atual matriz energética nacional, as energias renováveis (ER) têm maior relevância, por serem menos poluentes, “inesgotáveis”, acessíveis e de baixo custo, fonte de inserção econômica e social, e pela possibilidade de substituir os combustíveis fósseis em algumas aplicações, tornando-se ideal para minimizar parte dos problemas ambientais que o Mundo enfrenta. O artigo tem como objetivo descrever, através de pesquisa exploratória, bibliográfica e desk research, o estágio atual do uso e aproveitamento das ER (hídrica, solar, eólica, geotérmica e biomassa) utilizadas em Moçambique. Na análise da disponibilidade das fontes de energia, iremos apresentar questões relativas a sustentabilidade e eficiência, impactos socioeconômicos nas comunidades rurais não abrangidas pela rede elétrica nacional (REN) e alguns prós e contras na utilização. De entre os resultados, destacam-se as seguintes contribuições: o País apresenta excelentes características para geração, em pequena e média escala, de energia geotérmica e biomassas, e em média e grande escala, de energia hidroelétrica, solar e eólica, mas carece de: (i) políticas de promoção e regulação das tecnologias; (ii) financiamento direcionado aos projetos de ER; (iii) oferta de serviços de projetos de sistemas renováveis, (iv) e tecnologias para conversão das energias, sobretudo a geotérmica, eólica e biomassas fluida.

Abstract:

Abstract Background and study aims An Endoscopic Club E-conference (ECE) was set up in May 2014 to cater to increased demand for gastrointestinal endoscopy-related teleconferences in the Asia-Pacific region which were traditionally organized by the medical working group (MWG) of Asia-Pacific Advanced Network. This study describes how the ECE meeting was run, examines the group dynamics, outlines feedback and analyzes factors affecting the enthusiasm of participants. It is hoped that the findings here can serve as guidance for future development of other teleconference groups. Methods The preparation, running of and feedback on the ECE teleconference were evaluated and described. The country’s economic situation, time zone differences, connectivity with a research and education network (REN) and engineering cooperation of each member were recorded and analyzed with regard to their association with participant enthusiasm, which was taken as participation in at least 50 % of the meetings since joining. Associations were calculated using 2-way table with chi-square test to generate odds ratio and P value. Results To date, ECE members have increased from 7 to 29 (increment of 314 %). Feedback received indicated a high level of satisfaction with program content, audiovisual transmission and ease of technical preparation. Upper gastrointestinal luminal endoscopy-related topics were the most favored program content. Those topics were presented mainly via case studies with a focus on management challenges. Time zone differences of more than 6 hours and poor engineering cooperation were independently associated with inactive participation (P values of 0.04 and 0.001 respectively). Conclusions Good program content and high-quality audiovisual transmission are keys to the success of an endoscopic medical teleconference. In our analysis, poor engineering cooperation and discordant time zones contributed to inactive participation while connectivity with REN and a country’s economic situation were not significantly associated with participant enthusiasm.

Il programma di miglioramento genetico per le resistenze a stress biotici ha avuto inizio presso la Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) nel 2010. Inizialmente è stata condotta una caratterizzazione sia genotipica che fenotipica di materiali acquisiti da altri programmi di breeding e di materiale selvatico raccolto in New Jersey. Sia i genotipi conosciuti nei database internazionali che i genotipi sconosciuti, imparentati e non, sono stati impiegati come linee parentali nel processo di introgressione e di piramidazione di loci di interesse. Una volta pianificati e ottenuti gli incroci, la valutazione delle progenie è avvenuta seguendo un processo di Marker-Assisted Selection: dapprima è avvenuta la selezione fenotipica in serra in base al tipo di malattia e al numero di loci attesi per la medesima malattia; successivamente si è proceduto con lo screening molecolare in base ai loci specifici attesi nei parentali. Cinque sono i loci Run/Ren associati alla resistenza all'oidio presenti nel programma FEM; riguardo ai loci associati alla resistenza alla peronospora, quattro Rpv sono ben rappresentati nel piano di incroci. Ad oggi il 26% delle F1 è piramidizzato per quattro loci di resistenza.

Abstract:

The present study investigated the maneuverability and reasonability of sensory analysis, which has been applied in TCM identification for a long time. Ten assessors were trained and generated the human panel to carry out the organoleptic evaluation of twenty-five batches of Sha-Ren samples. Accordingly, samples were scored from 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest) for sensory attributes. Based on this, samples were divided into three classes: high class (Yang-Chun-Sha from Guang-Dong), moderate class (Yang-Chun-Sha samples from Yun-Nan and Guang-Xi), and low class (Lv-Qiao-Sha from marketplaces). For further background, three instrumental approaches were employed: morphological measurement with three indices (longitudinal diameter, transverse diameter, and 100-fruit weight), GC for determination of bornyl acetate contents, and E-nose for aromatic fingerprint. It is demonstrated in the results that GC and E-nose analyses were in great agreement with organoleptic evaluation. It gives insights into further studies on searching better morphological indicators and improving discriminant model of E-nose.

Abstract:

O experimento foi conduzido no aviário da Fazenda São João, localizada no distrito de Santa Rita, município de Serra Talhada-PE. Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho de frangos de corte alimentados com dietas contendo diferentes níveis de inclusão de farelo integral de raízes de mandioca (FIRM), suplementadas com complexo multienzimático assim como a sua avaliação econômica. Foram utilizados 450 pintos de um dia de idade, machos da linhagem Cobb, distribuídas em 25 parcelas experimentais, em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC) com cinco tratamentos, compostos por quatro níveis de inclusão de 25, 50, 75 e 100% de FIRM e uma dieta referência à base de milho e farelo de soja e cinco repetições por tratamento. O manejo adotado seguiu o preconizado no manual da linhagem Cobb. Foram mensuradas as variáveis de desempenho (ganho de peso médio diário, consumo de ração diário e conversão alimentar) e as variáveis econômicas receita bruta (RB), despesas (D), margem bruta (MB), e rentabilidade (REN). Os parâmetros de desempenho e de avaliação econômicas foram submetidos à análise de variância, sendo posteriormente realizadas análises de regressão e utilizado o teste Tukey com nível de significância a 5% de probabilidade (P<0,05). Foram observados melhora (P<0,05) no ganho de peso e conversão alimentar na fase de 36 a 42 dias e aumento (P<0,05) do ganho econômico. Concluiu-se que o FIRM suplementado com carboidrases exógenas pode ser incluído em dietas de frangos de corte industriais em até 100% produzindo melhora nos índices zootécnicos e aumento do ganho econômico em todo período experimental.

Two editions of Descartes's treatise on human physiology were published in the 1660s, more than a decade after his death: Florent Schuyl's Renatus Des Cartes de homine (1662) and Claude Clerselier'sL'Homme de Ren´´e Descartes (1664). The principal difference between them lies in the figures that illustrate the text. Schuyl's figures undermine Descartes's optimism; his anatomical sketches foreground human mortality,while his landscapes remind the reader of the fleeting nature of time and of the inevitability of death. In contrast, Clerselier's illustrations develop Descartes's comparison of the human body to a machine, which does not live nor, as a result, die. They thus obscure the fate of the author's dead body and in turn pave the way for the resurrection of his esprit.

El maíz (Zea mays L.) es componente esencial de la dieta de los mexicanos, con un consumo per capita promedio de 120 kg. La raza Tuxpeño ha destacado por su alto rendimiento y su amplia adaptación por lo que una vez adaptada a clima templado es necesario evaluar la calidad de su grano con los parámetros de las industrias procesadoras. En esta investigación se estudió el efecto de la interacción genotipo*ambiente en el rendimiento y las características físicas del grano de los ciclos 14 y 19 del maíz Tuxpeño adaptados mediante selección masal visual (SMV), a los Valles Altos de México. En 2013 y 2014, se evaluó la población original ‘C0’ y los ciclos ‘C14’ y ‘C19’ de SMV, tanto en su ambiente original, trópico húmedo en el estado de Veracruz, como en su ambiente de selección, templado subhúmedo en el Estado de México. Las características evaluadas fueron: rendimiento de grano (REN), índice de flotación (IF), peso hectolítrico (PH), pedicelo, pericarpio y germen de grano. Los datos fueron analizados con el modelo AMMI (efectos principales aditivos e interacciones multiplicativas). Los resultados indican que la selección para adaptación, las condiciones del cultivo y el efecto del ambiente durante su desarrollo modificaron favorablemente el REN y algunas de las características de calidad del grano de los genotipos. En Montecillo 2013-PV y 2014-PV se registró el mejor rendimiento (3.5 t ha-1), sobresaliendo ‘C19’, por su estabilidad, granos de endospermo duro (< IF) y mayor PH.

INTRODUÇÃO: síndrome da apnéia/hipopnéia obstrutiva do sono (SAHOS) é uma desordem de respiração durante o sono e tem sido descrita como uma condição relativamente comum em crianças. OBJETIVO: Verificar se existe relação entre a presença da Síndrome da Apnéia/Hipopnéia Obstrutiva do Sono e alteração de processamento auditivo. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 3 grupos de crianças na faixa etária de 5 a 11 anos, incluindo um grupo controle. Vinte indivíduos que constituíram o grupo de estudo foram submetidos à avaliação otorrinolaringológica e ao exame de polissonografia (PSG) e foram divididos em dois grupos: Grupo I (RO) constituído por 10 indivíduos respiradores orais e PSG normal e Grupo II (SAS) constituído por 10 indivíduos respiradores orais e PSG alterado. O desempenho destes indivíduos foi comparado a um terceiro grupo - Grupo III (REN) composto de 10 crianças sem queixas otorrinolaringológicas. Todos os sujeitos foram submetidos à avaliação audiológica básica e à avaliação do PA. RESULTADOS: Quanto à avaliação otorrinolaringológica, houve diferença estatisticamente significante no que se refere à avaliação dos cornetos nasais e das tonsilas palatinas. No grupo II, verificou-se maior número de indivíduos com hipertrofia de cornetos nasais grau II e III (p < 0,001) e com hipertrofia de tonsila palatina grau III e IV (p 0,007). Em relação à avaliação de PA, os resultados mostraram que houve diferença estatisticamente significante (p < 0,001) no teste dicótico de dígitos, tendo o grupo II apresentado pior desempenho do que o grupo III e, no resultado do teste de memória para sons não-verbais em seqüência (p < 0,022), tendo o grupo II apresentado pior desempenho do que o grupo I. CONCLUSÃO: A presença da SAHOS relacionou-se positivamente com a alteração de processamento auditivo.

The Bacillus halodurans voltage-gated sodium-selective channel (NaChBac) (Ren, D., B. Navarro, H. Xu, L. Yue, Q. Shi, and D.E. Clapham. 2001b. Science. 294:2372–2375), is an ideal candidate for high resolution structural studies because it can be expressed in mammalian cells and its functional properties studied in detail. It has the added advantage of being a single six transmembrane (6TM) orthologue of a single repeat of mammalian voltage-gated Ca2+ (CaV) and Na+ (NaV) channels. Here we report that six amino acids in the pore domain (LESWAS) participate in the selectivity filter. Replacing the amino acid residues adjacent to glutamatic acid (E) by a negatively charged aspartate (D; LEDWAS) converted the Na+-selective NaChBac to a Ca2+- and Na+-permeant channel. When additional aspartates were incorporated (LDDWAD), the mutant channel resulted in a highly expressing voltage-gated Ca2+-selective conductance.

Abstract:

Obesity and associated conditions, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), are currently a worldwide health problem. In Asian traditional medicine, Bai-Hu-Jia-Ren-Shen-Tang (BHJRST) is widely used in diabetes patients to reduce thirst. However, whether it has a therapeutic effect on T2DM or NAFLD is not known. The aim of this study was to examine whether BHJRST had a lipid-lowering effect using a HuS-E/2 cell model of fatty liver induced by palmitate and in a db/db mouse model of dyslipidemia. Incubation of HuS-E/2 cells with palmitate markedly increased lipid accumulation and expression of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), which is involved in lipolysis. BHJRST significantly decreased lipid accumulation and increased ATGL levels and phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and its primary downstream target, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), which are involved in fatty acid oxidation. Furthermore, after twice daily oral administration for six weeks, BHJRST significantly reduced hepatic fat accumulation in db/db mice, as demonstrated by increased hepatic AMPK and ACC phosphorylation, reduced serum triglyceride levels, and reduced hepatic total lipid content. The results show that BHJRST has a lipid-lowering effect in the liver that is mediated by activation of the AMPK signaling pathway.

I disordini nefrologici cronici sono, a oggi, una tra le patologie a maggiore diffusione globale, la cui ricaduta economica ha profondi effetti sui Sistemi Sanitari Nazionali di tutto il mondo. Tali patologie di natura cronica general-mente progrediscono sino all'insufficienza d'organo, ren-dendo necessarie per il paziente terapie sostitutive come il trapianto d'organo. Allo stesso tempo, però, la richiesta di organi per il trapianto supera ampiamente la disponibilità degli stessi, motivo per cui la ricerca si sta sempre più focalizzando sullo sviluppo di nuove soluzioni che possano risolvere tale problematica. Una tra le soluzioni che riscuo-te, a oggi, maggiore successo è quella basata su protocolli che prevedono la decellularizzazione d'organo. La finalità di tali protocolli è quella di fornire impalcature biocompatibili su cui impiantare cellule dello stesso paziente, così da poter dare nuova e completa funzionalità all'organo e, allo stesso tempo, eliminare il rischio di rigetto da parte del ricevente. In questo articolo saranno, perciò, presentate, in campo nefrologico, le principali caratteristiche della decellularizzazione d'organo, così da poter avere una prospettiva di quello che potrebbe potenzialmente essere il futuro della medicina del trapianto.

Abstract Abstract 160 Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8), a member of the γ-herpesvirus family of human DNA viruses, is the etiologic agent of several malignancies in immune-compromised individuals, such as Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and primary effusion lymphoma (PEL). Activated NF-κB is a critical mechanism by which lymphoma cells infected by KSHV are protected from apoptotic stress. vFLIP is the viral protein largely responsible for the constitutive NF-κB activity, and is essential for PEL cell survival. Using a subclone of the BC3 PEL cell line that stably expresses firefly luciferase under the control of an NF-κB promoter (BC3/NFκB-luc), we performed high throughput screening (HTS) of compound libraries to identify inhibitors of vFLIP/NF-κB in PEL cells. Assay optimization was done using the NCI Training set, following which screening of the NIH diversity set at 5μM picked up 60 hits (with >50% inhibition) from a total of ∼2000 compounds. To further test these compounds, we introduced a renilla luciferase controlled by a constitutive promoter (retroviral LTR) to obtain a double reporter cell line (BC3-REN#3). Three compounds showed preferential inhibition of firefly luciferase in the double-reporter cell line, and/or preferential inhibition of the BC3/NFκB-luc cell line when compared to a control non-lymphoid cell line with constitutive luciferase expression (U251-pGL3). Analogs of these three compounds were further tested in BC3-REN#3 cells, and three analogs were identified with increased activity/specificity for NF-κB. One of the compounds identified so far, here designated NSC-E, has shown dose-dependent inhibition of NF-κB in PEL cells, as evaluated independently by reporter and electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA). Nuclear translocation of the NF-κB active subunit p65, but not inactive p50 is inhibited by this compound, although it does not alter upstream events in the NF-κB pathway, such as IKKα/β phosphorylation or IκBα degradation. Studies are ongoing to elucidate the direct molecular target of NSC-E. Inhibition of NF-κB by NSC-E occurs only in PEL cell lines, and not in other lymphoma cell types. In addition, this compound preferentially inhibits viability of KSHV-infected lymphoma cells, at LC50s ranging from 18nM to ∼200nM in various PEL cell lines tested. In contrast, an effect on EBV-infected lymphoma cell viability is only apparent at much higher doses (LC50s in the 20–80μM range). Hence, ∼300X the KSHV-effective dose of NSC-E would be required to achieve inhibition in EBV-associated or virus-negative lymphomas, suggesting this inhibitor is very KSHV-specific. Finally, NSC-E was evaluated in a traceable reporter xenograft mouse model of KSHV-associated PEL using in vivo imaging, and found to be highly efficacious against both incipient and well-established tumors, with 100% tumor responses and no apparent toxicity. Thus, we have identified a novel, specific, and highly effective inhibitor of KSHV-associated lymphoma that demonstrates clear pre-clinical promise for therapeutic applications. Le vittime di tratta, ostaggio della criminalità organizzata e destinate al mercato del sesso, sono un fenomeno omogeneo, che ha bisogno di buone prassi, particolari e ad hoc, proprio per superare la percezione emergenziale e le generalizzazioni deleterie. In prevalenza le vittime di tratta sono donne che provengono dall'est europeo, oppure di na-zionalità nigeriane o sono transessuali che arrivano principalmente dal Sud America e rap-presentano un business importantissimo per i criminali. Queste donne, invisibili e senza voce, sono il più delle volte ostaggio di chi organizza il viaggio e, di conseguenza, tutto questo ren-de difficile la presa in carico da parte dei servizi sociali. L'intervento prende in esame, come caso di studio, le buone pratiche di accoglienza e presa in carico del servizio Roxanne del Comune di Roma, e delle discipline di scarsità, di sospetto e resistenza (Theodossopoulos, 2014) che le vittime di tratta attivano al fine di gestire il disa-gio della migrazione e della violenza (Appadurai, 2005), ricomponendo i disagi psicofisici della loro condizione. Le narrazioni delle donne nigeriane, delle donne dell'Est Europa e delle transessuali, che hanno contattato il servizio Roxanne o sono state intercettate dall'unità di strada, sono la prima parte del corpus qualitativo della ricerca. La seconda parte è un lavoro di analisi dei contenuti relativamente alle schede conservate dal servizio Roxanne e nelle strutture dove le vittime di tratta vengono inviate. La terza parte del corpus è l'analisi delle narrazioni di alcu-ni uomini detenuti per il reato di sfruttamento della prostituzione nelle carceri di Pavia e di Bollate (MI) per comprendere la totale disumanizzazione e la retorica della cosiddetta "pro-tezione" da parte degli sfruttatori. Le donne vittime di tratta sono permanentemente controllate e abusate dai loro carcerieri, in una costellazione di violenze e di continui atti brutali. A loro volta, i maltrattanti, respingono totalmente ogni responsabilità proiettando ogni colpa verso le maltrattate. Racconta uno di loro "sono libere di fare quello che vogliono, noi siamo qui solo per proteggerle, lei non le aiuterebbe?". Quello che emerge, dall'analisi dei dati, è una forma di normalizzazione della violenza da parte delle vittime di tratta, una forte marginalità (Douglas, 1993) ma, anche, una propen-sione alla resilienza.

Early motor skill interventions have been shown to improve the motor skill proficiency of children with autism spectrum disorder; however, little is known about the secondary effects associated with these types of interventions (e.g., influence on behavior, social skills, family dynamics). The purpose of this qualitative study was to (a) investigate parents’ perceptions of the child-level benefits associated with a fundamental motor skill intervention for their 4-year-olds with autism spectrum disorder and (b) explore how child-level benefits influenced the family unit. Eight parents (N = 8) were interviewed (semistructured) about their experiences with the intervention for their child(ren); the study was grounded in phenomenology. Five main child-level benefits emerged, including improvements with (a) motor skills, (b) social skills, (c) listening skills, (d) turn-taking skills, and (e) transition skills. The child-level benefits then extended to family members in a number of ways (e.g., more positive sibling interactions). These findings highlight several important secondary effects that should be investigated in future research.

In this study, we report the formation of MCL PHA from gluconate by recombinant E. coli. By introduction of genes coding for an MCL PHA polymerase and the cytosolic thioesterase I (′thioesterase I) into E. coli JMU193, we were able to engineer a pathway for the synthesis of MCL PHA from gluconate. We used two expression systems, i.e., thebad promoter and alk promoter, for the ′thioesterase I- and PHA polymerase-encoding genes, respectively, which enabled us to modulate their expression independently over a range of inducer concentrations, which resulted in a maximum MCL PHA accumulation of 2.3% of cell dry weight from gluconate. We found that the amount of PHA and the ′thioesterase I activity are directly correlated. Moreover, the polymer accumulated in the recombinantE. coli consisted mainly of 3-hydroxyoctanoate monomers. On the basis of our data, we propose an MCL PHA biosynthesis pathway scheme for recombinant E. coli JMU193, harboring PHA polymerase and ′thioesterase I, when grown on gluconate, which involves both de novo fatty acid synthesis and β-oxidation.

Abstract. Die Lösse des südlichen Oberrheintals erreichen stellenweise maximale Mächtigkeiten von mehr als 25 m. (Riegel 35 m; Heitersheim 28 m; Achenheim 37 m). Die Abfolge von Lössen und zwischengelagerten Böden läßt sich von Heitersheim, 15 km südlich von Freiburg, bis in das Gebiet westwärts von Straßburg (Achenheim-Hangenbieten) parallelisieren. Danach werden die Profile durch mehr als 5 Böden untergegliedert. Die oberste begrabene Parabraun erde (Riegel-E) trennt den jüngeren vom mittleren Löß. Es zeigen sich Unterschiede in Farbe, Karbonatgehalt, Porenvolumen, Korngrößenverteilung, mitunter auch dem Lagerungsgefüge zwischen diesen beiden Lössen. Der trennende Boden enthält eine Großsäugerfauna mit vorwiegend eurythermen Formen, aber auch mit Tierarten eines kalten Klimabereichs, wie Mammut, Wollhaarnashorn und Ren, sowie als Einzelfund den Rest eines Rehs, als Beweis eines vorübergehend auch warmen Klimas. Der Boden entstand in einem längeren Interstadial, mit mehrfach wechselndem Klima. Ein solches Interstadial kennt man von verschiedenen Gebieten Europas, aber auch Sibiriens, wo das Wärmeoptimum mit 42 000 bis 30000 B.P. angegeben wird. Der weichselzeitliche Haupteisvorstoß in Norddeutschland erfolgte nach diesen Interstadial. Die Bodenbildung des Eem-Interglazials (Riegel-C) trennt den mittleren Löß, mit wenigstens zwei Böden, vom unteren Löß. Es ist eine Parabraunerde mit größter Verwitterungsintensität. Hier finden sich Großsäuger eines echten Inter-glazials, wie Waldelefant, merkisches Nashorn und reichlich Reh. Nachweise von Braunbär, Ur, Murmeltier, Steinbock und Elch aus verschiedenen Tiefen, deren Einwanderungszeit in Mitteleuropa in der Hauptsache bekannt ist, bestätigen diese Altersdatierung.

The mechanisms generating variability in viruses are diverse. Variability allows baculoviruses to evolve with their host and with changes in their environment. We examined the role of one genetic variant of Chrysodeixis includens nucleopolyhedrovirus (ChinNPV) and its contribution to the variability of the virus under laboratory conditions. A mixture of natural isolates (ChinNPV-Mex1) contained two genetic variants that dominated over other variants in individual larvae that consumed high (ChinNPV-K) and low (ChinNPV-E) concentrations of inoculum. Studies on the ChinNPV-K variant indicated that it was capable of generating novel variation in a concentration-dependent manner. In cell culture, cells inoculated with high concentrations of ChinNPV-K produced OBs with the ChinNPV-K REN profile, whereas a high diversity of ChinNPV variants was recovered following plaque purification of low concentrations of ChinNPV-K virion inoculum. Interestingly, the ChinNPV-K variant could not be recovered from plaques derived from low concentration inocula originating from budded virions or occlusion-derived virions of ChinNPV-K. Genome sequencing revealed marked differences between ChinNPV-K and ChinNPV-E, with high variation in the ChinNPV-K genome, mostly due to single nucleotide polymorphisms. We conclude that ChinNPV-K is an unstable genetic variant that is responsible for generating much of the detected variability in the natural ChinNPV isolates used in this study.

Th e purpose of the article is to investigate the impact of temporary employment abroad on the reproductive activity of return migrants in Ukraine. Th e novelty of the study lies in establishing the quantitative eff ect of international migration experience on the reproductive behavior of return migrants, determining the impact of the presence and number of siblings on respondents’ childbearing activity. Th e main methods used are comparison, grouping and indicators standardization. Th e baseline data and calculations presented in this publication are grounded on the results of a sample study carried out within the TEMPER project, which has surveyed 736 persons with an experience of employment in Italy or Poland and 509 respondents who have never worked outside of Ukraine. It is found that among return migrants one person has an average of 1.09 children, while among non-migrants the corresponding fi gure is 1.26. To avoid the impact of diff erences in gender and age structure between the two categories of respondents age-specifi c coeffi cients of the average number of children per person are calculated in the article and the procedure of their standardization is applied. Th e standardized average number of children per one woman of reproductive age from the group of return migrants is 1.10, which is only 0.01 less than the value of the actual indicator. For women of the same age who had never worked abroad, the fi gure is 1.41. If women of childbearing age with migration experience were to have on average the same number of children as women from non-migratory group have, the total number of child -ren of this category of persons would be 25 % higher than the actual one. Th e overall impact of the educational levels of both parents on the average number of children is revealed: returnees with higher education who have a partner with the same educational level have an average 1.21 children; in couples where one partner has higher education and the other secondary, the corresponding fi gure was 1.3; in cases where both spouses have diplomas of secondary level, the analyzed fi gure is 1.62 (for non-migrants, the coeffi cients were 1.28; 1.57 and 1.76 respectively).
