Abstract Modern Chinese confirmative shi (as in mei cuo, wo shi yao dusi ni (沒錯,我是要毒死你) ‘that’s right. I really wanted to poison you to death’) is not an auxiliary but an adverb. It derives from the adjective shi ‘true, real’ in Old Chinese (Yan zhi yan shi ye (偃之言是也) ‘what Yan said was true’). The grammaticalization pathway of the Modern Chinese confirmative shi is different from that of the copula shi (Laozhang shi huoche siji (老張是貨車司機) ‘Laozhang is a truck driver’) or the auxiliary shi (Laozhang shi kai huoche, wo shi kai keche (老張是開貨車,我是開客車) ‘Laozhang drives a truck and I drive a coach car

In China today, comedy is a popular film genre, of which Feng Xiaogang 馮小剛 is a prominent director. This paper argues that cynical humor is a key but under-investigated feature of Feng’s comedies, which amuse their audiences by walking the fine line between reality and illusion. Mainly based on Slavoj Žižek’s account of cynicism, I show how a cynical attitude, marked by self-deceptive and pragmatic reflexivity, is expressed comically in Feng’s The Dream Factory (Jia fang yi fang 甲方乙方, 1997) and Personal Tailor (Si ren ding zhi 私人订制, 2013) as examples. Whether or not the charges are actually questions is a very important question bearing not only on oracle bone studies, but also on research on ancient divination and on ancient Chinese grammar. This study employs Alexander Wendt’s constructivist theory as its analytical framework to examine the evolving role of Confucian culture in global governance and its shaping mechanisms in China’s diplomatic practices. Grounded in the proposition that “ideas construct interests and culture shapes identities,” it reveals how contemporary China creatively reinterprets core Confucian concepts—such as harmony in diversity (he er bu tong), the spirit of harmony (hexie jingshen), and the tianxia system—to construct a discourse system for global governance rooted in civilizational subjectivity. The dramatic changes occurring in China in recent years have made many intellectuals ask about history, its values, and its purpose. When Chinese Christians reflect about history they find themselves in a contradictory situation. Equally, they recognise that social change is not only a blessing, but may also contribute to growing disintegration in society.
