Full textThe Liturgical Movement of the twentieth century had a great impact on the liturgical life of much of Western Christianity, particularly Roman Catholicism and mainline Protestantism. Many of the early pioneers of this movement drew inspiration for their efforts from the liturgical forms and theology of the Christian East, primarily from late antiquity (i.e. third to eighth centuries). The question is, “Were the Eastern Christian Churches that trace much of their liturgical expression to this period themselves affected by this movement?” At first glance, the answer might appear to be negative. However, this dissertation aims to show that the Liturgical Movement did have an influence in some quarters of the Eastern Christian Church. In particular, it analyzes one community’s attempt to adapt the scholarship and principles of the movement to Eastern Christian worship, specifically focusing on the liturgical reform efforts of New Skete Monastery, a community of Eastern Orthodox monastics located in upstate New York. The dissertation begins with a discussion of the meaning of reform and an historical overview of the scholarship and principles of the Liturgical Movement in both the Christian West and East, focusing primarily on those aspects that will become relevant to the future liturgical reform efforts of New Skete. It then introduces the communities of New Skete, including a brief history of the communities, how they understand liturgy and the place it has in their lives, how they understand liturgical reform, why they think such reform is necessary, their principles of reform, and how they understand the authority for their reform. The bulk of the dissertation chronicles the liturgical reform efforts of the community over their fifty-year history for the communal services of the monastery and analyzes them in detail. Since the study of liturgy is not just textual, this dissertation also includes a presentation and cursory analysis of the architecture of the worship space and its iconic program, the calendar of saints, the music of the service, and other performative aspects of the celebration. The work concludes with a summary of the reception of their efforts gathered from an interview project that explored their liturgical life

Full textThis study is a dissertation on the Movement of Spiritual Renew al that happened in Brazil among Brazilian Baptists in the mid-fifties of the last century. This movement is influenced by the second wave of the Pentecostal Movement in Brazil. The historic churches: Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian see their religious field being invaded by Pentecostalism with the nomenclature of Spiritual Renewal. The Movement of Spiritual Renewal is rejected by the Baptists mainly for its approximation of the Pentecostal Movement. This rejection causes a split in the denomination and the Movement for not disappearing following the path of institutionalization giving rise the national Baptist convention.

Full textGiven the provocation of some authors regarding the future of the school in 21st century (Canário, Barroso, Nóvoa), through a theoretical and empirical research, It was intended to identify, understand and analyze the network of Brazilian organizations that perform or promote changes in the current school model. In order to do so, it was identified four invariants in this model: time (Elias), space (Viñao Frago and Escolano), relations with knowledge (Tomaz Tadeu da Silva), and relations of power (Weber, Foucault), which in the liquid modernity (Bauman) undergo changes. Several current examples of ruptures within the invariants were attained through direct and indirect research, such as: interviews, visits to schools and projects, research on social networks, advertising materials and various cultural productions that deal with the subject. To understand the transformation processes as well the individual and collective work changes, we retrieved literature on action and social practice (Gimeno Sacristan), as well theories of industry analysis (Porter). In order to put this process into historical context, the current scenario was compared to the one of the progressive education movement from the 20th century. From the aforementioned analysis it was inferred the concept of educational movement, which led to the realization that is currently ongoing in Brazil an educational renewal movement leaded by schools, foundations, government agencies, startups and cultural producers. As the outcomes of this movement are still uncertain, here are presented just some of its trends. The literature points to the continuity of a resistance movement (Singer), along with a process of strengthening of the techniques of self-government (Ramos do Ó, Hamilton). Regarding this movement are observed changes that both superficially amend the school model as others that propose significant changes, resulting in new educational processes. Understanding school as an instrument of production of social structures (Bourdieu and Parsseron; Petitat; Vincent, Lahire and Thin), we bring evidences that profound changes in its shape imply Anthropological transformations, and we emphasize that the possible consequences of the movement depends on our collective choices, being our responsibility to build the still uncertain and never determinable future.

This research aims to clarify some aspects of the relationships that occur within the Christian tradition between the traditionalism in the sense of forming a theological-dogmatic more rigid framework and guided in a more rational and systematic, "scholar", experience with the sacred and the movements of "spiritual awakening" which are based on a freer experience in relation to preconceived theological formulations, and often burst a more emotional and mystic spirituality with the sacred. To this end, we followed the historical path of the Igreja Batista da Lagoinha, Belo Horizonte-MG, which emerged in the charismatic movement emergence in the Protestant stream in Brazil, in the middle of the 1950s and 1960s. We attend more specifically, because our research object, to the Baptist churches, who have gone through tensions and ruptures that led two flanks, namely "traditional" and "renewed". Among this "renovated wing", the Igreja Batista da Lagoinha has became the precursor and one of the main representatives of this outbreak of charismatic experience in the Protestant environment. His influence was not limited to the genesis of this movement of "spiritual awakening" in Baptist churches, however, remains influencing Protestant and Pentecostals churches and denominations and even some Charismatic sectors of the Roman Catholic Church, with songs from their Ministry of Praise Diante do Trono, their heterogeneous liturgy and their theological (re)appropriations that provide them a more fluid and dynamic identity.

O primeiro traz a problematização e a revisão bibliográfica.
As criticism towards the school Physical Education (SPE) perspective dedicated to physical aptitude and technical-sports development which was quite common up to the 1970s, new teaching proposals started appearing in the 1980s, with the purpose of bringing Physical Education closer to the true purposes of school and received the name of SPE renewal movement. Through the years, these teaching proposals were incorporated into undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as official education documents. Nowadays, it would be expected that Brazilian SPE classes would mostly represent the renewal movements proposals but, paradoxically, we have seen only diffuse and even random interventions, predominantly represented by a play along attitude. Confronted with the necessity of investing in renewing practices and seeking to abolish the type of study that merely denounces expired practices, this study sought out teachers that, aligned with the renewal proposals, attempt to teach SPE classes that adhere to and represent said didactical-methodological knowledge. As such, we aimed to investigate the influence of the renewal movement on the pedagogical interventions of five physical education teachers in Rio de Janeiros municipal education network. The study is divided in three complementary articles. The first one involves the main question and a literature review. The second one seeks to identify what the teachers think of the renewal movement. Finally, the third article brings the analysis of 20 SPE classes taught by the five teachers. The analysis was performed through a systematic observation sheet with didactical-methodological indicators suggested by Resende and Nascimento (2004), as well as through an interview conducted with the teachers regarding didactical and methodological questions as well as criticism of the interventions. We found that, although most interventions had distinct characteristics, most interventive actions were close to the indicators in the planning, objective, content, method, evaluation and teacher-student relationship categories. All teachers criticized their classes, believing they should be better and more varied than they usually are, representing limitations in the interventive field and their commitment to the quality of the interventions. We believe that the data collected in this study represents yet another small step towards the discussion and construction of renewed practices in the field of SPE by researching and indicating possibilities, limitations and examples of concrete and didactical everyday actions.

This study aims to understand the participation of teacher Horieste Gomes in the Brazilian Geography Renewal Movement. So, we used the contextual approach method proposed by Berdoulay ([1981] 2003) to help our research. Based on this methodological perspective, we investigated geography development specifically, the so-called Critical Geography and Horieste Gomes participation in the Renewal Movement. We understand that science develops from two important factors: the first is the social context in which it is and the second is the theoretical and methodological bases that will support scientific thinking. In Brazilian Geography, in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, there was a meeting between these two factors, providing a moment of epistemological rupture and the formation of a new geographical science conception. This meeting enabled a reinterpretation of Geography and its social function, both in the social context, particularly the military dictatorship actions, and the politicalacademic setting, with the possibility of a pure Marxist reading, with no interference. However, to go only to the original Marxism in a political framework developer was not enough. There was a difficult task to be done: join Marxist theory to geographical science. How could that be, since Geography traditionally dealt better with physical aspects than with humans? How to include Marxism in a science that for several years, had only as a method the description? These issues, although secondary in this research, are a difficult mission to the authors, who are the protagonists of Geography Renewal Movement, as Horieste Gomes, with a clearly Leninist conception, he can solve in their own way, all of these problems. First by understanding that the scientific neutrality should not exist for this geographical thinking, which means that the researcher must adhere the worker group, carry out a research focusing on this concept. With this argument, he strongly criticizes the previous currents, Traditional and Quantitative Geography. It is also possible to understand that the geographer can contribute to the formation of a society with transformative consciousness, so, to adopt a dialectical and historical materialism is what best contributes to this process. So, this method is the only one that is able to provide a totalizing and emancipatory analysis. From this point of view, he makes his considerations about geographical knowledge with no dichotomy between Physical and Human Geography. To understand that there is a relationship between human and that it is mediated through work and to understand this, from the historical and dialectical materialism, it is possible to realize that nature is historicized and that man is naturalize, as this relationships gets narrow. Finally, he clarifies that only the socialist mode of production is able to harmonize the relationship between human and nature, since this perspective, nature would not be seen only as a resource and the socialization of contemplation could generate a environmental consciousness.

Full textThe aim of the present research is analyzing the ways labor, as a category of social analysis, was inserted in the criticism of renewal movement of Geography in Brasil. Such movement has its beginning in the 1970s, but it remains alive in its most active perspective. It was sought to identify, in the process of insertion of labor, its role in mediation between social and geographic criticism which has been coming up; first as a capitalist denunciation, afterwards as epistemological consolidation. The theory is that, in the warp intended by the renewal movement, labor settled as an important element of transition to the critical opening for the geographic analysis, but, in its process of theoretical-epistemological affirmation, it was not considered in its conflicting and dialectical entirety, meaning, simultaneously, its own negation. That is why it is a study concerning the affirmation/negation of labor in the genesis of criticism in Geography in its renewal movement from its main theoretical perspectives. For this purpose, the theoretical proposals which, directly or indirectly, centrally or simply tangentially, have adopted labor as object, core or political perspective for its formulation were considered. Those perspectives are denominated as labor geographies. Among the specific aims which compose the argumentation in this thesis, it is remarkable to mention: (1st) the essencial role of value theory to the formulation of a critique against development and capitalism expansion. It was observed how labor was taken as value crystallization to subsidize a view that, by space, intended to reveal mechanisms of domination and exploitation of capital from its territory instrumentalization. At this moment, a strong linking to a concreticist interpretation, misunderstood as a properly geographical reading is remarkable; (2nd) the construction of a geographical reading supposed to be ontological had one of its main references in labor. But it was noticed the formulations, many of them through assembly or theoretical fusion systems, were not guided by self-criticism, which led to a remote ontological discourse and, consequently, mistaken as the gnosiology and geographical epistemiology itself, considering the remaining of concreticist interpretation. (3rd) the nature of geographical criticism and its theoretical expression. At this latter point of analysis, it was able to observe how the issue of contradiction was interpreted and inserted in the geographical criticism. Its absence was, after all, concluded. In addition, taking labor as reference, it was observed that the dialectics involved in its formulation tended to be more like an instrument of theoretical conciliation than for a social critique. It could be concluded that, considering the argumentation in the thesis, intended to be from labor as a reference to the analysis of geographical criticism, the present thesis presents some fissures in its own formulations, those ones which tend to develop as a self-contradiction, leaving its effectiveness as an emancipatory social critique still incomplete.

Full textDuring the last four decades of the 1900’s, the churches in Sweden faced major changes, both from a national and a local perspective. Two movements within Christianity played a major role in this development: the ecumenical movement and the charismatic movement. The encounters between the established churches and, in particular, the charismatic renewal movement was, however, not always friction-free. At times, they were quite belligerent. As a result, many relations between people and organisations were damaged, during the 80’s and 90’s. In addition to personal and collective grief, this implied a significant drain of resources. The aim of this study is to examine, from an ecclesiological perspective, what happens in the encounter between a renewal movement and churches in a local ecumenical context, and to highlight under what conditions these meetings lead to unity and division, respectively. The actors of interest to this study are (1) the renewal movement with its upholders, (2) the churches, with its ministers, and (3) leaders at district and national levels. The aim is to find patterns in their behaviour, as well as the consequences of these for the encounters between the renewal movement and the established churches in the area. The participants' ability to engage in active reconciliation appears to be an important factor, determining the direction of the correlation between renewal movements in relation to division and unity. A part of the aim is therefore also to examine the conditions and the occurrence of reconciliation processes, as well as the methodology used. The study is made from a local ecumenical perspective on the meeting between the renewal movement and the church. More specifically, the ecumenical development in Uddevalla, during its meeting with the charismatic renewal movement the years 1975-2000, is examined.

This Essay intends to recreate the history and memory of the Christian Union of Students from Brazil, since its incipient moment in the city of Juiz de Fora, in the decade of 1920 until its throw out process of the Protestantism in the decade of 1960. It also consists in analyzing the phases of this student movement, affiliated Brazilian the Universal Federation of the Movement of Christian Students and its meetings and disagreements with the theological, social and political aspects present in the churches and in the structures of the Brazilian nation. The main focus refers to the perception of compassion, of the social responsibility and of the political practice always evident in the singularity of the Protestant Christian students' life. Those same students looked for the social revolution and the theological renewal.

This thesis written by Fabio de Souza Leão has as title: The liturgical formation in Brazil from Sacrosanctum Concilium. The main objective of this research is to analyze, although in general, why the catholic communities in Brazil did not find a satisfactory way in the liturgy, the source of their spirituality, even after the renewal of council with the promulgation of the constitution on the liturgy in 1963. This scientific research is justified by the deficiency of liturgical formation of the brazilian clergy even after the Second Vatican Council. The changes in the liturgy could not produce the expected results, in other words, a spiritual renovation of the liturgy in the minds and hearts of the priests. Many times they understood the liturgical constitution more like reform that renovation, a much more comprehensive aspect than reformer, because it requires a new style of liturgical life able to promote the active, full, conscious, fruitful and pious participation, which are requirements of own essence of liturgy. The primary hypothesis of this research indicates that the liturgical formation of clergy as vertex of problem in active participation in communities is deficient. His nonassimilation of the renewed liturgy affects communities, and this has direct involvement in the pastoral of the church. The theoretical research, a method followed in this work, comes to important results for the Church in Brazil: the priests are not yet imbued with the spirit and strength of the liturgy and its theological-liturgical training is weak, they had not caught the spirit of the liturgical renovation and many of them still remain on the periphery of the cult of the Christian mystery. They are bounded on liturgical rules, devotionals and celebrationshow; it misses initiation in the liturgical life and a better organization for an effective liturgical formation at the parish level

Full textAssuming that the Brazilian military regime, established in 1964, was based on maintaining two separate orders - the democratic order and exception (authoritarism) - this thesis has as main purpose to analyze this political party configuration, in Espírito Santo, between the years 1964 and 1982. The focus of this analysis is on the patch of the prevailing party associations in the period MDB and Arena - considering its constituent political groups, this specific federal unit, characterized as peripheral set in national development. The perspective taken for the analysis of this trajectory is the institutional framework set up by the Brazilian authoritarian regime (1964- 1985). It is analyzed, under this assumption and focus, the political election performance of the parties above in lawsuits aimed at filling vacancies in the legislative (Senate, House and Federal Legislature), according to electoral laws in force in each election and in own cyclical circumstances. It is also reconstituted, the different contexts succession, conducted indirectly since 1966, the choice of Governors, and exceptionally for Bionic Senator in 1978, examining the relationship between parties and governments formed in the period. The main hypothesis is that, despite the restrictions imposed by the military regime for the operation of the two-party system, it identifies certain lines of continuity between the pre-and post-1964. The results of the survey, which used a wide range of documents, and being based on the methodology multiple documentary research, demonstrate that the main political actors, be they individuals or groups within the political clubs in question, maintained certain positioning standards already verified in the political-electoral period of 1945-1964. In the case of capixaba Arena, the party met both members of the old PSD, with its two main wings - the urban-industrial and agro-land - as the political forces that gathered around the partisan front conventionally called partisan Democratic Coalition, that housed a wide range of political parties - UDN, PTB, PSP, PSB, PR, and others - which opposed the PSD. But MDB, since its beggining, rigged by a former member of the more conservative wing of the former PTB and its group, which sent to the opposition capixaba party the same conservative profile observed in regional PTB. The paper also analyzes the historical confluence between the development project that had been gestated in the Espírito Santo since the PSD governments, especially that of Jones dos Santos Neves (1943-1945/1951-1954) - whose political heirs of the Governor put into practice - and the implementation of the developmental project of the Military Governments. To this confluence of agendas - which proved to be a crucial element of legitimacy and permanence in positions of regional power, of alumni figures of urban-industrial portions of the old PSD, during most of the duration of the military regime - we call the Ideal Platform. The final part of the work is inclined to identify the realignments of those aforementioned political actors in the new multiparty scenario wrought upon the establishment of the New Republic, as well as the election campaign of 1982.

Full textThis thesis sheds light on the role of social movement organizations in the developement of nascent sectors that are aligned with the values of a social movement. The first research chapter questions the assumption that activists and firms have divergent interests, and the emphasis on the confrontational role of social movements.Propositions are developed to explain why non-oppositional social movement organizations' (SMOs) actions matter for fims, and when SMOs willl influence firms' strategic behavior. The second research chapter investigates whether support for social movement organizations sympathetic to an industry is linked to increased commitments of firms to the focal sector.Using a unique longitudinal dataset of European solar cell producers, this hypothesis is tested empirically and confirmed; further, it is demonstrated that the type of firms and their prior commitments moderate the link between SMO support and increased firm commitment to the industry. The last research chapter investigates the enactment of favorable policies for solar energy across EU countries. Empirical findings suggest that such policies can be partly explained by the interaction between de novo firm density in a country and SMO support. This dissertation contributes to strategic management, social movement theory, and studies of industry creation

Full textThe European Union is pursuing an ambitious policy to develop renewable energy aimed at increasing its share to 20% in the European energy consumption by 2020. To that extent, the European legislator requests from all Member States that they implement national support for the production of renewable electricity, which may fall within the scope of the ban on restrictions and State aids. In parallel, the policy of achieving the internal energy market requires the Member States to liberate the economic sector in which renewable electricity is used. By observing the rules of the internal market, the thesis evaluates the articulation between these objectives that seem contradictory. While the environmental goal underlying the development of renewable electricity justifies an inflexion of the rules of the internal market, it promotes national separation and gives rise to normative competition between the Member States. Each of them uses the attractiveness of its own laws to persuade the economic operators to exploit national energy sources, independently of their natural distribution on a European scale. The empirical observation of this phenomenon highlights the risks it poses to the overall coherence of the European Union’s action in the field of renewable energies. By using some developments of the positive law and the practice of private actors in the market, the thesis evaluates the hypotheses to renew the market mechanisms so that the market becomes a full instrument for promoting renewable electricity in the European Union

Full textMy research topic is the social impact of urban transformation plans. In this doctoral dissertation I focused it on a neighborhood movement from a Quarter of Barcelona, which is considered paradigmatic in planned urban transformations, to the extent that it speaks of the "Barcelona Model". I wanted to study the subject of research in a neighborhood movement to focus it from the active and organized citizen response in resistance against the urban plans that are being implemented, and, above all, against this model of city driven by local government and capitalist powers, considered by the neighbors organized as more harmful than beneficial for the local population involved. The research was aimed to address anthropologically the construction of the resistance movement of Barceloneta's residents, created to cope with urban plans implemented in the neighborhood by the City Hall. This subject is part of the process of planned urban transformation that is taking place now in this neighborhood and in Barcelona City. As specific objectives, on one hand it was to inquire on the strategies that are taking place in the neighborhood against the urban plans designed by the City Council, especially those generated from the neighborhood movement constituted by the AssociaciO de Veins I Veines de l'Ostia (L'Ostia Neighbors Association) and the Plataforma de Afectados en Defensa de la Barceloneta (Platform of Affected in Defense of the Barceloneta). Different elements of the process of opposition or resistance have been investigated in this direction, such as problems-and possible solutions- identified by the organized neighbors, their actions and forms of organization. On the other hand, the research aims to have an analytical approach on social dynamics resulting from this process of transformation and resistance: the relationships that appear disappear or are transformed. Specific issues arise from the central question about the social impact of urban planning: - How a neighborhood movement against urban plans is organized? - Through which claims, discourses, strategies, types of internal organization and alliances? - Which are the movement concerns and its fronts of struggle? - In what way this style and format of neighborhood struggle can and should be compared with other phases of capitalist appropriation of the city?

Full textThe European Union is pursuing a major policy to develop renewable energy aimed at increasing its share to 20 % in total energy consumption in 2020. In this context, France has set up a policy to support renewable electricity generation, through support mechanisms that directly subsidize this generation. However, this mode of support faces several issues, which question its durability. On the one hand, the evolution of the internal electricity market policy renews the question of the compatibility of the support mechanisms with the provisions of European Union law on free movement of goods and State aid. On the other hand, the significant development of renewable electricity generation risks threatening the balance of the French electricity system. In order to cope with these obstacles, France has adopted a major reform of these support mechanisms and has set up several linked mechanisms aimed at adapting the growth of renewable electricity generation to the constraints posed by the electricity system. By using some recent developments of the positive law and the doctrines developed by the institutional players in the internal electricity market, the thesis evaluates the capacity of this reform to adapt the policy of support for renewable electricity generation to these legal and systemic constraints

Full textI base my research on a fairly complete collection of pastor’s Dallière writings that I have assembled and digitized (see the CD-rom), presenting some of the main themes in the theology of Louis Dallière (1897-1976), a pastor in the Reformed church of France. After a biographical sketch of his life, I present his critique of Idealist philosophies and its impact on Protestant theology. I present Louis Dallière's larger objective of establishing a more concrete and confessional ecclesiology, including his rethinking of the practice of baptism, especially infant baptism. Convinced that the era of Christianity was coming to an end, he called for a renewed practice of the immersion of confessing believers. Because he supported the beginnings of Pentecostalism he also believed in a renewal of spiritual charisms within church life. I also explore the larger purpose of his call for a renewed confessing church to prepare for Christ's Second Coming, with his consequent re-appropriation of eschatology without the excesses of some apocalyptic movements. In each of our chapters I place L. Dallière in his ecclesiological and theological context. In my conclusion I explore the relevance of Dallière’s insights for our current theologies

After the “Cultural Heritage Preservation Act” was enacted in 1982, there is more and more protection for cultural properties. Therefore, the public are awake of the importance of historic conservation. According to the Act, the cultural properties are divided in seven categories registered with various values which include the settlements. The Hamasen settlement at Gushan belongs to the nation, and the Kaohsiung City Government plans to demolish the historic buildings in this settlement in order to establish a parking for urban renewal. This policy was announcement in March, 2012. However, the residents and students who live in this area do not approve this policy. This caused the city council’s attention and held some public hearings to discuss. Local cultural and historical groups consider that the historic buildings are valuable to preserve because they have been built since more than one hundred years ago. After the negotiations, Kaohsiung City Government decided to suspend the demolition. Urban renewal is important evens for urban construction in most advanced countries, which can improve the messy landscape. However, we often face the argument of conservation of the historic buildings in Taiwan in the process of urban renewal. Hamasen settlement is an example. This study aims to discuss how the public and private sectors deal with the conflicts between the urban renewal and historic conservation for Hamasen settlement. In this study, data collection and interview approaches were adopted to collect related literature, domestic and abroad cases. Moreover, some related officials and person were interviewed in this study. The results in this study are as follows: 1. The public sector should communicate with residents who live in the renewal area when some historic buildings are considered to demolish for urban renewal. 2. Social organizations and the residents in historic settlement play important roles in the process of settlement conservation. 3. Conservation of historic settlements should be consistent, otherwise it will fail. 4. The public sector should consider the historic conservation when an urban renewal is executed. Correspondingly, the people should support the urban renewal. 5. Revitalizing Historic Buildings and creating business opportunities in these buildings are realistic.

In 2010, Taipei County was promoted into New Taipei City, which led to rapid changes in its urban form. Rapid population growth, rapid economic and social changes, industrial restructuring, and the like have become new urban governance challenges for New Taipei City. In this time and space context, the importance of the Urban Renewal Project of Xinzhuang Police Station gradually rose, especially since the opening of the MRT Xinzhuang Line. In addition, under the guidance of the Department of Finance, waterfront residential houses were constructed through public-private partnership. This decision, however, led to opposition from groups in the local community and the formation of a new urban movement. The questions to be addressed in this study include: What are factors affecting the local government’s decision over the Xinzhuang Street space? How has the spatial awareness of various action takers in this urban project been formed? How has the action taker’s spatial awareness been converted into actions? How have these actions affected the governance of Xinzhuang Street? In order to gain an insight into the cause of the public urban renewal project and the process of urban movement, the research methods including interviews, data collection, literature review, and participatory observation were adopted to explore how the local government’s top-down urban policy over the past decade has affected Xinzhuang Street’s development and how it has given birth to the Urban Renewal Project of Xinzhuang Police Station. Additionally, how the civil groups put forward their imagination of space and produced a bottom-up impact on the government’s urban space governance process through various urban movements was also studied. Research results show that New Taipei City in the face of plights such as financial expenditure, industrial restructuring caused by globalization, and Taipei City and New Taipei City competing for resources gave up large-scale public construction projects, sought public urban renewal through public-private partnership, and promoted urban renewal through the use of public power. Meanwhile, civic groups exert their influence on the government through urban movements and directly or indirectly put forth urban government ideas and methods through rallies, workshops, interviews, lobbying, etc. in order to not only persuade the city government, experts, and scholars but also the general public. This way, the city government will be prompted to entertain the possibility of converting waterfront residential houses into social residential houses, while public hearing experts will come around to support the preservation of cultural assets and turn an urban movement into an urban policy governance approach. Through the project study, the author hopes to provide the research results as a reference direction for future community participation, cultural preservation movements, and urban policies.

The technology of the Internet is in progress and the Internet has become a virtual public sphere where people can discuss or debate to the public issues; moreover, the sphere also has become the fundamental of social movements. In the past, the researches of the Internet were focused on the anonymous or the fake names, and he anonymous and the fake names led to several unanticipated problem; on the other hand, when “true name system” occurs on the Internet, which means that the environment of the Internet has changed. However, reading the articles and relative researches, researcher discovers that the most of the past research was focus on the anonymous or the fake names, lacking true name effect and relative discovery. Compared with the embodied mobilization of traditional social movement, the appearance of social movement has changed. Because of the development of technology, the mobilization process and social movement can be launched on the Internet. On the one hand, the information and the campaigns of social movement organizations can be disseminated by the characters of Internet, including virtual connection, high access, and interactivity. On the other hand, Internet can overcome the geographical barrier, so it can let more people take part in social protest, including give supports to the people who real dedicate to movements, issue opinion to discuss certain subject, and post or cite organizations message to let the information can be accepted by more people. The phenomenon is also one of the characters of network society. This research comes from the degree of true name, probes the effect of true name toward the development of relationship, social support, Internet social movement and opinions communication on the Internet, as well as refers the researches of anonymous and the fake names to highlight the differences among true name, anonymous and the fake names. The consequence shows that true name system can promote interpersonal identity, social support, format the restriction of personal opinion and let people take responsibility to their opinion; furthermore, it can let the whole virtual public sphere become more efficient and finally encourage the virtual or physical social movements.

Nowadays, social movement activists tend to manage their own online media during the movement period. Activists could not only use online media as a platform to communicate the public, but also could use it to influence mass media’s coverage. Past studies on agenda-setting showed that media could set each other’s agenda in the context of election. However, there are few studies focused on the context of social movement. Therefore, this study focused on the case of Shihlin Urban Renewal to examine the flow of agenda between mass media and online media, whether online media owned by SMO could influence mass media’s coverage, or mass media still has its agenda-setting ability on others. The current study raised 5 research questions to examine the event theme, frame, source, standpoint used by mass media and online media, and the flow of agenda between these two media. Content analysis was adopted to analyze print press (CHINA TIMES and Liberty Times) and online media (Facebook fan pages managed by the pros and cons during this movement), and the sampling time began from January 28th in 2012 to March 28th in 2013. The result showed that the theme of law and politics were the most emphasized event themes of mass media during the movement, while online media stressed on the themes of protest and attribution of the whole event. Second, both media spent lots of space discussing treatment recommendation of urban renewal and this movement. Third, mass media tended to quote different sources in a single coverage, but online media preferred to quote sources that supported their action. Fourth, the mass media coverage showed its sympathy toward the Wang family while online media holded distinct standpoint. Last, the finding showed that during social movement, mass media could set online media’s news themes, but online media could decide mass media’s frame of the agenda. These results suggest that under the context of social movement, mass media and online media both has their influence on each other.

Piper, Brooks Cameron. "Legacies of the modern movement : intraurban freeways and the renewed role of heritage." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/23919.
Full textThis paper explores the changing definition of heritage in recent years and its potential application to aging automotive infrastructure in urban settings across the globe. The proposed new approach to heritage, unlike a conventional understanding of the term, which emphasizes aesthetic and historical attributes, acknowledges a wider range of values that a structure can possess. This range includes social and ecological values either existing or added through adaptation. This broader understanding of heritage reflects current discussions about a paradigm shift in heritage conservation, which is rooted principally in English scholar Graham Fairclough's writings and in UNESCO's Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape. These theoretical developments embrace a holistic view of heritage, with the totality of the inherited urban environment potentially exhibiting value. Based on these principles, the term “heritage” applies not only to that which is rare, old, or aesthetically pleasing, but also to that which is commonplace, recently built, and unappealing. This definition suggests that not only buildings and monuments but also infrastructure can constitute heritage, as it can be associated with a broad range of values. This concept is put to the test through three case studies of aging intraurban expressways in three dense urban environments: central Seoul (Korea), Seattle (USA), and São Paulo (Brazil). Through examining these cases, this thesis attempts to deduce the role of this new heritage perspective in dealing with aging automotive infrastructure in cities.

Full textThis thesis analyses the contextual concepts for Mission in Europe as developed by European churches between 1979 and 1992 by examining their interpretation of European culture and history (,,Europabild") and the corresponding understandings of mission. The main thrust of the Roman Catholic concept of the ,,New Evangelization of Europe" is to understand European-humanist culture as having grown out of christian (Roman Catholic) roots and to interpret the Church as Soul of Europe. Accordingly, New Evangelization means to call Europe back to the Church in order to keep its culture from ruin and to revitalize it. The European branch of the Lausanne Movement took some clues from the Roman Catholic concept, but interpreted them in its own way since 1984. Here European culture is understood in the basic theological tension between ,,bridge" and ,,barrier" for the Gospel in Europe. The aim of mission is the conversion of Europeans to the biblical and present Jesus Christ who is able to give new life and new hope for individual Europeans and European culture. The Conference of European Churches has coined and discussed the concept of ,,Mission of the Churches in a Secularized Europe" since 1986. The Protestant ,,wing" tends to be less critical towards secularized European culture than Orthodox theologians seem to be. Nevertheless both affirm an understanding of mission as encounter with present time European culture in which God is seen at work in various and mysterious ways. Finally the author formulates his conclusions and perspectives for a transforming (of) mission in Europe. The Body of Jesus Christ in Europe needs to be as deeply rooted in biblical revelation as in biblical spirituality in order to live as a missionary and alternative community in the middle of European culture, and in order to not repeat past european-christian inculturations, but to repent and invite Europeans to turn to Jesus Christ to explore fresh ways of life, hope and reconciliation in the middle of European diversity.
