Abstract:
In their ruminations on Mark Rothko’s Chapel paintings, Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit posit a mode of aesthetic consciousness produced by acts of renunciation. Rothko deliberately relinquishes his paintings’ visibility and thus, like Beckett and Resnais, impoverishes a primary feature of his artistic medium. Bersani and Dutoit’s concept of renunciation undermines modernist medium specificity and points to a form of pseudomorphosis that reveals the fundamental homo-ness between the arts. This speculative essay builds on their argument that such renunciative gestures produce aesthetic models of nondual consciousness and brings Bersani’s later writings into conversation with musical experience. In Bersani’s encounter with Proust and music, musical experience proffers a powerful ego solvent in favor of ontological interpenetration. An attention to music—here, that of Morton Feldman and Joan La Barbara—avers the power of modernism to shatter the modern ego.

Abstract:
The issue of voluntary renunciation from the stage of attempted crime is complex. Since the doctrine of criminal law divides attempted murder into completed and incomplete, it is appropriate to consider the issue of voluntary renunciation from each type of murder separately. It is known that the doctrine of criminal law establishes that it is impossible to renunciation voluntarily after a completed murder. However, in recent years of scientific research a point of view on the possibility of voluntary renunciation and exclusion of criminal responsibility is put forward. It should be noted that this point of view is scientifically and theoretically controversial, on the basis of the analysis of the norms of criminal law theory and case law the author’s position is formed on the basis of the analysis of opinions on voluntary renunciation from the stage of attempted crime. According to the results of the study, the author came to a number of conclusions. The corpus delicti of the crime is relevant to determine the presence of voluntary renunciation from the commission of a crime. Voluntary renunciation from the incomplete phase of murder is possible and does not entail criminal responsibility. Also the possibility of controlling the development of a person’s offense in a voluntary renunciation from the attempt; the presence of a time interval between the act and the risk of socially dangerous consequences; a number of circumstances should be taken into account, such as the active implementation of voluntary renunciation.

Aydin, Turkan. "Renunciation Of Language In Harold Pinter." Master's thesis, METU, 2006. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12607481/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on Harold Pinter&#039
s three plays &ldquo
The Homecoming,&rdquo
&ldquo
The Caretaker&rdquo
and &ldquo
The Dumb Waiter,&rdquo
the aim of this study is to explore the idea that an individual cannot be a speaking member of the Symbolic Order, thus of the society unless s/he obeys the prohibitions/commands of language, a concept on which both Pinter and Lacan put great emphasis in their own vision. For Pinter human beings lead a life controlled by some unknown powers and build a disastrous subjective world devoid of linguistic competence. As for Lacan, language imprisons, castrates and pushes the subject into a claustrophobic world, which is portrayed strikingly by Pinter. The result is equally impressive
for Lacan: neurosis or psychosis, oscillating between the Orders/Registers of the Symbolic, Imaginary and Real, not possessing an assigned role in the community, and for Pinter: an absurd world where there is no meaning but a sense of loss. Lacan&rsquo
s explanation for the reasons of this absurd world focuses on two significant factors : the m(O)ther, who meets the basic needs in the Imaginary Order/stage of infancy and who introduces the Father to the child, and the Father, who will enable the child to obey the prohibitions of language, and thus to secure the child&rsquo
s adulthood. Throughout the study the points which will be highlighted are as follows: the characteristics of the absurd drama, the place of Harold Pinter in the contemporary theatre and the justification of a Lacanian reading, subjectivity&rsquo
s constitution.

Thomas, Emyr Vaughan. "Wittgensteinian descriptivism and concepts of self-renunciation." Thesis, Open University, 1997. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57717/.

Full text
Abstract:
Part I presents a systematic presentation of what is termed 'the Wittgensteinian position', broken down into eight theses, each of which is thought of as intrinsic to self-renouncing faith. Part II consists of three case-studies examining the conception of self-renouncing faith found in the works of Francois Mauriac, Georges Bernanos, and Patrick White. Distinct divergencies from many of the Wittgensteinian theses are unearthed. Part III traces the roots of each of the Wittgensteinian theses to their sitz im leben in a strain of neo-Romanticism centred on securing independence of the world. Connections are made to Tolstoy, Emerson, Rilke, Trakl and Von Hofmannsthal. Part IV argues that each case study in Part II runs counter to the Wittgensteinian position in one of three ways: (1) not having some theses which are proposed by the Wittgensteinian position to be intrinsic to self-renouncing faith; (2) deeming some theses which are proposed by the Wittgensteinian position to be intrinsic to self-renouncing faith as either (2.1) not inherently selfrenouncing or (2.2) actually incompatible with the understanding of selfrenunciation exemplified in the case-study; (3) having a different logical structure to its model of self-renouncing belief from that of the Wittgensteinian position. Points (1), (2) and (3), and particularly points (2.1) and (2.2), suggest that self-renouncing faith is not the unitary phenomenon assumed by the Wittgensteinian position. The casestudies represent three distinct models of self-renouncing faith. These models have no place for the self-concern that characterises the Weltbild of self-concern with which the Wittgensteinian position is impregnated. There follows a broad discussion of the implications of the above findings for the Wittgensteinian position, including Wittgenstein's status as a religious thinker, the way a descriptivist methodology should be understood, the blanket exclusion of the metaphysical from religious belief and the over-simple portrayal of religious belief as a conceptual orientation to the world.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the philosophical and theological motivations for early Christian celibacy prior to the appearance of monasticism. This thesis will challenge recent scholarly positions that portray early Christian celibacy only in light of the emergence of monasticism in the fourth century, and which argue that celibacy as an ascetic practice was motivated primarily by resistance to the dominant social structures of antiquity. The practice of celibacy was a significant movement in the early church well before the appearance of monasticism or the development of Christianity as the dominant social force in the empire, and although early Christian sexual austerity was similar to the sexual ethics of Greco-Roman philosophical constructs, early Christian sexual ethics had developed in relation to uniquely Christian theological and cosmological views. Moreover, a segment of the early Christian community idealized celibacy as an expression of the transformation of human nature amidst a community that continued to remain sexually austere in general.
vi, 267 leaves ; 29 cm.

According to Article 766 of the Latvian Civil Law, a contract to renounce the right of inheritance is a contract by which one party renounces the right of inheritance that would have belonged to him or her after the death of the other party. The author analyses the legal nature of the inheritance renunciation contract and its consequences, reveals the meaning of the term “a renouncer of inheritance” by separating the renunciation of an inheritance prior to the invitation to inherit and after the invitation to inherit, and explaining the importance of accurate legal terminology.

The conference proposes a topic of increasing relevance in the contemporary international political and legal panorama. In particular, the article analyses the characteristic features of the concept of sovereignty and attempts to demonstrate how it cannot be transferred or subject to negotiability, since sovereignty has to be understood as unique, indivisible, unlimited: to argue the opposite means to confuse sovereignty with its components/competences/functions, to which the State can instead voluntarily renounce; a renunciation which, however, does not affect sovereignty as such, given that the renunciation itself is still a manifestation of sovereignty.

Abstract:
The article provides an analysis of the current criminal legislation and discusses a number of issues related to the institution of voluntary refusal to commit a crime. Voluntariness and finality are two main features that determine the voluntary renunciation of a crime. Also problematic aspects of the provisions of certain norms of the Special Part of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation are seen, providing for the release from criminal liability of a person if he voluntarily released a kidnapped person or a hostage and if his actions do not contain another crime, with a certain degree of conditionality can be considered as special norms in relation to voluntary renunciation of committing a crime (general norm). Even though there is a fundamental difference between them, related to the commission or absence of a crime as such, they are united by the fact that in both cases the persons do not allow the occurrence of socially dangerous consequences of their actions. Moreover, they act voluntarily.

And we are referring to representations of a type of anthropological crisis that simultaneously affected both economic behaviors and individual subjectivities, leading to exodus, uprooting, massive migration - to the renunciation, temporary or permanent, of the psychological comfort generated by home, family or of the country. The texts we are referring to are literary x-rays of the post-communist period, of its mentalities and the captive life of the Bessarabian. The article addresses the topical subject of migration, a phenomenon specific to so-called marginal and totalitarian societies, a subject with a major impact on the thematic evolution of literature born within these societies.

Abstract:
Yu Ying-shi is a distinguished contemporary historian who has had significant engagement with Buddhism and Zen from his youth into his later years, with numerous writings addressing Buddhism and Zen topics. He fundamentally affirms that Buddhist doctrine is an important spiritual resource in the modern world. He believes that while Buddhism primarily advocates for renunciation of the world, the new Zen Buddhism shifts towards "worldly asceticism," having a profound impact.Yu's understanding of Buddhism can be summarized in four key points: First, Buddhism is a highly developed and complex philosophical system. Second, Buddhism has integrated into Chinese culture through the reception of Daoist thought and has spread widely. Third, the high monks of Buddhism embody a "scholar's" aspiration to "rescue all beings",which is deserving of respect. Fourth, Buddhism has an intangible influence, particularly the Mahayana spirit, which aids in the realization of the "inner sage" and "outer king".Regarding his evaluation of the new Zen Buddhism, it can be encapsulated in five points: First, Huineng established a new Zen Buddhism of revolutionary significance. Second, the core spirit of the new Zen Buddhism is "worldly asceticism".Third, the new Zen Buddhism advocates for a "not adhering and not separating" approach to transcendent world and real life. Fourth, the new Zen Buddhism stimulated the rise of Neo-Confucianism during the Song and Ming dynasties. Fifth, the new Zen Buddhism emphasizes "directly pointing to the mind", highlighting the role of the heart. In his view, the new Zen Buddhism's shift towards the world combines the concepts of this shore and the other shore, resembling Western Protestant ethics. In comparison, the new Zen Buddhism proposed the idea of "worldly asceticism" earlier than Protestant Christianity, but in terms of historical and social impact, Protestantism undoubtedly has had a greater influence.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Within the concept of women in the archaic Roman era, the present paper will attempt a believable reconstruction of the passage of the vestal woman figure, subjected to the male potestas of the pontfex maximus in which Eros was sacrificed to the Civitas due to the blackmail of equal rights, to the recovery of the woman as an object of Christian contemplation. Objective and Method: The aim of this article, through the analysis of recognized sources, is to study the axiom according to which the Roman woman was considered equal to the man in society (for roles, reputation, legal capacity, and public image), only playing the religious role of vestal, which denied her femininity.Throughout history, male domination was revealed in all fields, still in the religious field, until the advent of Christianity which re-evaluated the woman through the figure of the Madonna, attributing to her the role of mother of the creator. Topic: The figure and role of women in ancient Rome did not disregard religion. In that period, the various female personalities could be identified in the figures of: matrons, prostitutes, commoners, vestals, all of which were characterized by enslavement to the particular patriarchal figure (pater, husband or pontifex). Only the vestal priestesses would seem to be excluded from the list of figures subject to male protagonists. The woman, considered tender and soft (mollis, mulier, the most fragile) was completely excluded from important roles in Roman society. The juridical position of the Roman woman is obtained in the law of the XII tables (451-450 BC): "Feminas, etsi perfectae aetatis sint, in tutela esse, exceptis virginibus Vestalibus" - "The women are all to be under protection, although they are adults, except the Vestal virgins". Vestal women could juridically act like a man only if subjected to the temple of the goddess Vesta; in a psychoanalytic analysis, therefore, the counterpart was the renunciation of femininity, which was imposed by the thirty-year chastity they had to abide by. Throughout history, male domination was revealed in all fields, still in the religious field, until the advent of Christianity which re-evaluated the woman through the figure of the Madonna, attributing to her the role of mother of the creator. Conclusion: In conclusion, with this article, we will analyse how the Roman religions (polytheistic and monotheistic) have contributed, throughout history, to subjecting women to male domination and to attributing a negative and sinful image to them, until the advent of Christianity. The psychologist feels the need to address a question: what of this primordial essence of the feminine scares the man of every age?

The lecture introduces the process of a unique construction –a church- conceived in exposed white concrete, with a very defined texture and with desire to become part of a contemporary line of sacred architecture. Transforming difficulty into opportunity became the projectÅLs motto, to cope with the crisis that started in 2008. This is the narration of the process of renunciations that where necessarily made for its construction, and how this scarcity gave way to the experimenting with concrete to produce some of the elements of the Liturgy, including the altar, which will become the synthesis of the project.
