Näsholm, Malin. "Global careerists’ identity construction : A narrative study of repeat expatriates and international itinerants." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Handelshögskolan vid Umeå universitet (USBE), 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-40711.

Abstract:
Research on international work experiences has to a great extent focused on an international assignment as a single event, and on how to optimize it from the organization’s perspective. This thesis addresses individuals’ subjective experiences of international work experiences and focuses on individuals with global careers, who see working abroad as a major element of their careers, involving several international assignments or international work experiences. With the recognition that individuals will work abroad on their own initiative a differentiation is made between repeat expatriates; expatriates with at least two international assignments for the same company, and international itinerants; working abroad for at least two different companies. The main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of global careers through applying an identity construction perspective on narratives of global careerists’ working lives. To address this purpose the global careerists’ identity construction processes are explored, and their career orientation, their identification with the organization and career, and country and culture are considered more directly. An important sub-purpose of this thesis is to make a comparison of repeat expatriates and international itinerants, in terms of their identity construction and identifications. An individual’s identity, or sense of self, is seen as constructed in social interaction, encompassing dualities such as both differentiation from and identification with others. This thesis addresses social identities as part of an individual’s identity construction in the transition in social, cultural and organizational context that an international work experience involves. The approach taken is that the increased understanding aimed for can be reached through narratives. Interviews were made with twenty Swedish global careerists. Each interview was constructed as a narrative and structured according to elements of narratives to construct aggregate narratives of repeat expatriates and international itinerants. The narratives were analyzed and comparison of repeat expatriates and international itinerants was made. The findings in this thesis show that all the global careerists in this study have experienced shifts in their identities and identity reconstruction in the course of their careers. External circumstances such as the type of location, the time abroad, and if the work abroad is perceived as temporary, is important to the global careerists’ identity construction. The findings illustrate that there are differences in repeat expatriates’ and international itinerants’ career orientations, in their identifications with the organizations they work for, with their careers and with what they do. The two types of global careerists differ in how they identify with their home country and culture and the countries and cultures they live in. The repeat expatriates and international itinerants also show different patterns in their identity construction.

Frost, Matthew W. "The performance of pavement foundations during construction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2000. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/11152.

Full text
Abstract:
There is an impetus in the UK to move away from empirical pavement foundation design and the current method specification, towards an analytical design approach. For an analytical design approach to be adopted, the required performance properties of stiffness and resistance to permanent deformation of the foundation materials (sub grade and capping) need to be measured, both in the laboratory for design and in the field in order to ensure compliance. This thesis studies the influence of the sub grade on the constructability and performance of a series of full-scale pavement foundations. This has been achieved by measuring the performance parameters of several sub grade materials in the laboratory, using repeated load triaxial testing. These data have been compared to comparable data collected in situ using dynamic stiffness measuring devices during the construction of trial pavement foundations. The performance of the trial foundations has been measured during the placement and compaction of the different foundation materials, and again after their subsequent trafficking. The testing demonstrates the stress dependency of the foundation materials. The laboratory testing shows that the sub grade permanent deformation under cyclic loading (used to simulate construction operations) becomes unstable at a deviator stress of half the deviator stress at failure (0.5qmax)· The stiffness at this applied stress and above is shown to be approaching a consistent value. This indicates that large changes in the stiffness of inversely stress dependent fine grained soils occur below the deviator stress at which the permanent deformation becomes unstable. Significant variability of data has been found in the performance parameters measured (both in the laboratory and in the field) for samples of subgrade collected from small areas of the same site. However comparable patterns of stress dependency have been observed between measured laboratory and field performance using the different apparatus. The resistance to permanent deformation is shown to be a more critical design load case for construction than the need for adequate stiffness of support required to compact the foundation layers. The performance of a composite road foundation is shown to be material and site specific, and this will have important implications for design and site compliance testing.

Huenefeld, Joshua. "A report on the effects of wind speed on timber construction." Kansas State University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/13606.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Science<br>Department of Architectural Engineering<br>Kimberly Waggle Kramer<br>Main lateral force resisting systems (MLFRS) in timber buildings consist of two components: diaphragms and shear walls. Diaphragms are used to collect the shear induced by the lateral force at each of the levels. The shear is transferred from the diaphragms to the shear walls via plywood sheathing and connections. The shear walls transfer shear to the sill plate via plywood sheathing and then into the foundation via anchors. Two approaches for designing shear wall are: the segmented shear wall approach and the perforated shear wall approach. The segmented shear wall approach uses only full height segments to resist shear; each individual segment must be designed to resist the shear and overturning force induced by the lateral load. The perforated shear wall approach uses both full height segments and segments around openings to resist shear; the wall as a whole is used to resist shear and overturning forces induced by the lateral load. This report examines one-, two-, and three-story timber buildings located in three different wind regions: a) 115 mph, b) 140 mph, and c) 160 mph. This report presents the design process for the MLFRS components and a comparison of the designs for each of the buildings. The purpose of this report is to determine how the design changes depending on the magnitude of the lateral load, the height of the building, and the approach used to design the shear walls.

Sundström, Anna. "Developing and validating self-report instruments : assessing perceived driver competence." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Beteendevetenskapliga mätningar, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-26764.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis was to develop and validate a self-report instrument for perceived driver competence. The thesis includes six papers and a summary. All papers focus on perceived driver competence from a measurement perspective; that is, how to develop an instrument for perceived driver competence and how to use and interpret the scores from the instrument in a reliable and valid manner. Study I reviews how perceived driver competence has been measured in other studies and discusses these methods from a measurement perspective. Most studies have examined perceived driver competence by asking drivers to compare their own skill to that of the average driver. That method is problematic, since it is not possible to determine if drivers are overconfident or not, when empirical information of their own skills is missing. In order to examine if drivers overestimate their skills or not, perceived driver competence should be compared with actual driving performance. Study II reports on the development and psychometric evaluation of a self-report instrument for perceived driver competence - the Self-Efficacy Scale for Driver Competence (SSDC). The findings provides support for construct validity, as the SSDC demonstrated sound psychometric properties and as the internal structure of the SSDC corresponded to the theoretical model used as a basis for instrument development. In study III, the psychometric properties of the SSDC were further examined using an item response theory (IRT) model. The findings confirmed the results indicated by the classical analyses in Study II. Additional information was provided by the IRT analyses, as it was indicated that the scale would benefit from fewer scale points or by putting labels on each scale point. In study IV, Swedish and Finnish candidates’ self-assessment accuracy was examined by comparing candidates’ scores on the SSDC and a similar instrument for self-assessment of driving skill used in Finland, with driving test performance. Unlike previous studies, in which drivers compared their perceived skills to that of the average driver, a relatively large proportion made a realistic assessment of their own skills. In addition, in contrast to previous studies, no gender differences were found. These results were also confirmed in study V, where the results from the Finnish instrument for self-assessment of driving skill were compared with the results from a similar instrument used in the Netherlands. Study VI further examined the construct validity of a revised version of the SSDC, combining qualitative and quantitative sources of evidence. There was a strong relationship between the SSDC and an instrument for self-assessment of driving skills, providing support for convergent validity. No relationship was found between the SSDC and driving test performance. Explanations of the lack of relationship were provided from semi-structured interviews, as they indicated that confidence in performing different tasks in the test are different from being confident of passing the test, and that the candidates are familiar neither with assessing their own skills nor with the requirements for passing the test. In conclusion, the results from this thesis indicated that the choice of methods for assessing perceived driver competence as well as the quality of these methods affect the validity. The results provided support for different aspects of construct validity of the SSDC. Moreover, the findings illustrated the benefits of combining different methods in test validation, as each method contributed information about the validity of the SSDC. The studies in this thesis mainly examined internal and external aspects of construct validity. Future studies should examine procedural validity of the SSDC.

Abstract:
The purchase of a cooperative apartment is for most people the largest venture in their life. Mahalik, Subrat. "Automating Variation and Repeater Analysis in Physical Design of Integrated Circuits." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4555.

Abstract:
Rapid advancement and innovation in semiconductor research have continuously helped in designing efficient and complex integrated circuits in miniature size. As the device technology, is aggressively scaling to improve the device performance, the issues related to device interconnects, power, and reliability have become a major concern for the designers. These challenges make the design and validation of ASIC extremely complicated. The primary idea of this work is to develop automation tools, to be used in the physical design flows to improve the efficiency of the design flow. The first tool named as variation analysis tool automates the on-chip variation modeling used in the post-layout timing closure phase in the physical design flows. The proposed variation analysis tool models three types of variations such as on-chip variation (OCV), advanced on-chip variation (AOCV) and parametric on-chip variation (POCV). The results of the proposed tool have compared with the Synopsys PrimeTime™ results, and the results show average around 98% accuracy compared to the PrimeTime™. The second tool is for automating repeater analysis in the physical design flows. The repeater automation tool can be used to automate the repeater or buffer insertion process, while technology process is changed from one to another. The tool can calculate the best possible repeater distance for any given metal layer and also, the number of repeaters, combinational or sequential for the user given distance and frequency. The accuracy of this script is compared with the repeater insertion based on the synthesis tools and also, the SPICE simulation.

Abstract:
White clover is an allotetraploid legume with a genome size of ca 960 Mb and is widely used in Irish grasslands to improve the nutritional value of the forage by increasing the relative amounts of nitrogen present. White clover is closely related to Medicago truncatula, the diploid (genome size of ca 500 Mb) model legume chosen to study the symbiotic genetic programmes of plants and facilitate the genetics and breeding of important legume crops. This thesis describes the construction of a genetic map of a white clover mapping population composed of 94 F1 progeny bred in the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (UK) from parents S1S4 and R3R4. The genetic map was constructed using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers and white clover microsatellite markers from previously published white clover maps. The thesis also details a glasshouse and field based phenotypic analysis carried out on morphological traits which allowed quantitative trait loci (QTL) to be detected on the genetic linkage map of white clover. Due to the high correlation between the traits measured, both conservation of QTLs across environments and co-localisation of QTLs for related traits were observed in this study. A BAC library of one of the family parents, R3R4, was constructed using pIndigo BAC-5, consisting of over 37,000 clones with an average insert size of 85 Kb, representing a threefold genome coverage. A preliminary sequence analysis was carried out where 700 BAC clones were sequenced on both ends. Results showed that over 50% of the BAC-ends had a correspondence with the Medicago genome sequence; however only 16 of the BAC-end sequence pairs had homology within a span of 20 to 200 Kb in M. truncatula. The level of synteny between white clover and M. truncatula was assessed by comparative structural genomics, where five BAC clones of the white clover library were sequenced to sixfold coverage and their sequences were compared to the corresponding M. truncatula sequences.

Abstract:
Abstract Questa ricerca vuole contribuire alla ricerca sull'agency come concetto psicologico tra i bambini palestinesi che vivono in condizioni coloniali. This research is one step forward to understand agency as a psychological concept among Palestinian children living under colonial conditions. Several dimensions of agency informed this quantitative tool; it integrates a social-ecological approach as it emphasizes the powerful role of the social context in shaping behavior. This instrument, “War Child Agency Assessment Scale - Palestinian version (WCAAS-Pal)” measures Palestinian children’s agency over time. The data was collected through self-reported interviews, in which children in the age range of 9-14 were interviewed from all different geographical locations in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem and were carried out in two waves. The first wave of the data collection took place in November 2020, while the second wave has taken place after the 2021 war on Gaza, in April 2021. It was applied to 287 children from Gaza, 251 children from East Jerusalem, and 1066 children from the West Bank. The collected data was processed using the SPSS 9 Version (25) for the two waves (T0, and T1) against the seven agency dimensions as well as the total agency, then life satisfaction, and the trauma dimensions. The hypothesis states that children who maintain high levels of satisfaction and agency throughout time would less likely develop stress and trauma-related symptoms. Our findings suggest that children are skilled agents who are equipped in self-adjustments to traumatic experiences in contexts characterized by extreme chronic colonial violence. To recognizing children as social agents means recognizing that children can assign meaning to their reality; hence improving their well-being.

Abstract:
Objective: To determine if the types of questions asked at the morning reports conducted by two East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine residency programs, family medicine and pediatrics, and to determine if the databases used by clinical librarians to answer the clinical questions give the Quillen College of Medicine Library (QCOML) insight for future database purchases and end-user training. Methods: A review of questions asked over a six-month period in two primary care morning reports was conducted. Each question was categorized according to the type of question (i.e., therapy, diagnosis, etiology, or prognosis) by two independent reviewers. A third reviewer was used to adjudicate differences in the two reviewers’ decisions. The search results from the morning report questions were also reviewed to see which databases were used to answer the clinical questions. Main Results: The percentage of question types was compared between the two programs during the time period of January 1, 2007–June 30, 2007. For every foreground question, the question was then classifi ed as therapy, diagnosis, harm, prognosis, or other. Each morning report then had their questions broken down into a percentage to show how many of each type of question was asked. The results of the questions were analyzed to see which databases were used in answering the questions. The residency programs were then compared to see if any differences existed between them. Conclusions: The analysis will serve as a gauge for the type of training needed or desired by the residents. The data show an overview of the questions asked that will further aid the QCOML librarians in determining databases and resources that will be most useful to the residency programs.

We develop a method to compute the Hamming distance of these codes. Our computation gives the Hamming distance of constacyclic codes of length $np^s$ in many cases. In particular, we determine the Hamming distance of all constacyclic, and therefore cyclic and negacyclic, codes of lengths p^s and 2p^s over a finite field of characteristic $p$. It turns out that the generating sets for the ambient space obtained by torsional degrees and strong Groebner basis for the ambient space are essentially the same and one can be obtained from the other. In the second part of the thesis, we study matrix product codes. We show that using nested constituent codes and a non-constant matrix in the construction of matrix product codes with polynomial units is a crucial part of the construction. We prove a lower bound on the Hamming distance of matrix product codes with polynomial units when the constituent codes are nested. This generalizes the technique used to construct the record-breaking examples of Hernando and Ruano. Contrary to a similar construction previously introduced, this bound is not sharp and need not hold when the constituent codes are not nested. We give a comparison of this construction with a previous one. We also construct new binary codes having the same parameters, of the examples of Hernando and Ruano, but non-equivalent to them.

Abstract:
Section 1 :Literature Review This review explores the recent research on the nature of fear of childbirth with a focus on methods of assessmen.t and psychological intervention. Using defined criteria, thirty-five articles were identified for review. Fear of childbirth was shown to have implications for the emotional well being of women both in the antenatal and postnatal period. A number of personal and social factors were reported to influence fear. Fear of childbirth was found to be a distinct dimension of anxiety and therefore measures of general anxiety lack validity. Studies investigating the impact of psychological interventions to treat childbirth fear show initial promise however methodological flaws limit conclusions. Findings are explored in relation to implications for women in the UK. Section 2: Research Report The expectations of childbirth that women develop during pregnancy are reported to influence the actual experience of childbirth. Existing measures of childbirth expectations have limited robustness and cultural validity for pregnant women in the UK. The aim of this study was to develop a reliable and valid English-language based scale to measure pregnant women's expectations of childbirth. Items were generated via exploratory interviews with members of the target population. An initial version of the scale was developed and piloted with a large sample of pregnant women. Questionnaire data was subjected to item analysis and principal components analysis revealed six underlying factors. A final version of the scale was developed and initial assessment of internal reliability and validity were carried out.

Abstract:
My dissertation, which lies within the framework of international linguistics, is about the interaction during meals among friends in invitations in France. Based on audio and video data recorded in naturally-occurring situations, this empirical study aims to show the modalities by which the participants co-construct the two main activities observed at table: eating and talking. Concerning eating, the study describes in detail the interactions since the eaters sit down at the table until they finish the meal. On the basis of verbal and multimodal analysis, this study brings out the linguistic and multimodal resources used by the hosts and the guests in order to make sure of the course of the meal. As for talking, this dissertation focuses on the assessment on the dishes served. The analysis shows that through the assessment on the dishes served, the speakers express their personal observation about the food, as well, they realize various actions such as complimenting, criticizing, self-complimenting and self-depreciating. The key issue of this study is to shed light on the principles seen but unnoticed by which the French speakers construct interaction at table

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study the legitimacy perspective in sustainability reporting in the given context, and to find out whether Swedish construction companies define and value their legitimacy. In the thesis we have performed a qualitative study using the inductive method; in the research we have used hermeneutics as our starting point and constructionism as the research strategy. In the empirical part we have conducted structured interviews with a list of pre-formulated questions. For the interviews, we have chosen Sweden’s major property developers: Skanska AB, PEAB AB, NCC AB, JM AB and Midroc AB. Companies can get motivation to report their sustainability from their perceived obligation to support license to operate. Not all the companies use stakeholder analysis in the preparation of annual reports, which lets us assume that the companies base their choice of data mainly on internal perceptions of what is required. Data is not selected basing only on what company itself finds interesting; stakeholders’ information needs are reflected in the selection process, although, just like in the first question, not necessarily deliberately. Financial rationale is merely a criterion when choosing sustainability projects to work with; it does not define whether a company is focusing on sustainability in general.<br>Syftet med denna uppsats är att studera legitimitetsteorin hållbarhetsredovisningar i en särskild kontext och att studera om den svenska fastighetsutvecklingsbranschen definierar och värderar deras legitimitet.

Abstract:

Thesis, Lyon 1, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010LYO10237.

Full text
Abstract:
Is the selective process irrelevant, does it persist, or is it dialectically achieved in civilization? Two general theses arise from this question: (1) either the progressive extinction of natural selection, human society thus witnessing a genuine vital emancipation or (2) the persistence of selection pressures, the system of selective constraints thus remaining effective. In fact, this question was outlined in 1871 with Charles Darwin’s “anthropology”; his anthropology and notably his social Darwinism, a form of displacement of selection pressures continue to be debated today. Confronted with the thesis of the doctrinal inconsistency of this “anthropology” which allows Darwin’s words to be interpreted at will, we shall put forward a form of coherence based on the concept of sympathy and the combined effects of selection, culture and habits. We shall then put forward a theory of vital emancipation that combines the persistence of selection pressures and emancipation via a technosymbiotic process, a neologism similar to cultural niche construction (Odling-Smee). Considering civilization as an ecological niche and culture as a parameter will solve most theoretical problems, notably related to the identity dualism associated with a conventional approach to man and society. Our reflection on civilization will lead us to focus on and investigate into the economic biotope understood as an essential and specific feature of our ecological niche. Following this approach, man’s biological emancipation coexists with a system of selectionist constraint in a biotope that is, as a consequence, increasingly biomimetic

Abstract:
There is a general recognition within the social sciences that extensive mobility challenges how we perceive the notion of home. With this idea as its starting point, this thesis explores how situations of hardship impact the ways in which mobile professionals negotiate and construct their homes. The actor-network theory (ANT) has been used as the means to explore the interactions between the people who inform this study and the multidimensional characteristics of the hardship setting. Through individual, open-ended interviews, the research draws upon the experiences of five international civil servants from the United Nations (UN) system of organizations who are assigned to hardship duty stations. Applying ANT to the empirical material drew the attention to the identification of five principal entities (or actors) that come into play in the negotiation of home construction, namely the civil servant, [in]security, mobility, ownership and social relations. The influence of the various nonhuman actors on home construction varied according to the individual and their transnational ties and professional status – those with family nuclei tended to situate their homes in terms of territoriality, whereas for others, factors such as privacy, materiality and social interaction weighed more heavily in the act of creating home.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the sustainability programmes and goals of Sweden's 10 largest constructioncompanies as well as their position on Agenda 2030. The fact that the concept of sustainability canbe perceived and defined in different ways around the world has created a certain ambiguity aroundthe notion. The largest construction companies in Sweden present sustainability reports that accountfor successful sustainability projects as well as future planning. The work of construction companiesin achieving the goals of Agenda 2030 is much the same, with the difference of some companieshaving unique approaches to achieving them. Several of the selected construction companies in thisthesis also have a number of goals set up that extend beyond the scope of 2030, partly because of theSwedish government's climate legislation for creating a climate-neutral Sweden by 2045.In this study, four goals from Agenda 2030 have been selected for analysis within the frame of thechosen construction companies' sustainability reports. The reports have been analyzed in order todecipher the companies’ different positions in regard to the chosen goals. The theory of weak andstrong sustainability applied in an organization has been applied to the sustainability of eachconstruction company, which produced a clear pattern as a result. The degree of strength within thesustainability efforts depends on the individual company’s turnover. This was relatively clear sincethe sustainability reports of the companies with a higher turnover were more comprehensive, contained more clearly presented progress, all while the number of Agenda 2030-goals was greater.Herein must be noted that the Signal Theory contradicts, to some extent, the assumption that thestrength of a company's sustainability is dependent on turnover, since companies can increase theirvalue and popularity through voluntary accounting and emphasize and highlight the ‘finer’ parts ofthe business.Future studies can find this study helpful in carrying out research within the same field. Even morein-depth investigational reports can be done using this study as a foundation, which could possiblybrighten prospects for deep-digging sustainability research into any type of company, constructionor non-construction. Sustainable work is a relevant topic in the world right now, which is whyfurther studies of this character will be needed in order to achieve a better understanding of thesustainability concept and development of effective strategies to make the world even moresustainable.

Abstract:
As-built schedules prepared during and after construction are valuable tools for State Highway Agencies (SHAs) to monitor construction progress, evaluate contractor's schedule performance, and defend against any potential disputes. However, previous studies indicate that current as-built schedule development methods are manual and rely on information scattered in various field diaries and meeting minutes. SHAs have started to collect field activity data in digital databases that can be used to automatically generate as-built schedules if proper computational algorithms are developed. This study develops computational algorithms and a prototype system to automatically generate and visualize project level and activity level as-built schedules during and after construction. The algorithm is validated using a real highway project data. The study is expected to significantly aid SHAs in making better use of field data, facilitate as-built schedule development, monitor construction progress with higher granularity, and utilize as-built schedule for productivity analysis.

We show that even when players have different discount factors (in which case the repeated game is not a zero-sum game), an outcome is subgame perfect if and only if all of its components are Nash equilibria of the stage game. This implies that in all subgame perfect equilibria, each player's payoff is equal to his minmax payoff. In conclusion, the competitive nature of two-player zero-sum games is not altered when the game is repeated.<br>A Constructive Proof of the Nash Bargaining Solution - We consider the classical axiomatic Nash bargaining framework and propose a constructive proof of its solution. Abstract:
The Integrated Reporting (IR), though it is designed as an external reporting system, is considered by some authors also useful for internal managerial purposes because it permits, through the concept of integrated thinking, to represent connections amongst different information, stimulating greater awareness in the definition of strategy and actions, considering their effects both in the short and long term. This could help to promote a more holistic approach in business management. This thesis, through an interventionist case study, explores the process of design and implementation of an integrated report within a company, the Loccioni Group, for managerial purposes, highlighting levers and barriers to its adoption, as well as benefits and critical issues emerging from practice. The interventionist case study was conducted using the constructive approach, with a strong researcher involvement in the field. From a theoretical point of view the thesis contributes to the study of IR as a management tool, a literature topic still unexplored, as studies on integrated report design and its internal effects in practice are still limited. The thesis also helps to highlight the leading role that the Business Model can take into the integrated report design and choice of indicators. The thesis also highlights how the Business Model has encourages the coherence between “local” measuring systems (referred to company departments) and the “global” measurement system (referred to the company as a whole). From a practical point of view the development of the integrated report permits to better measure and communicate the value of intangible assets, responding to a specific need of the company.

Abstract:
High levels of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere have a continued tangible impact on the environment globally and threatens to extinct biodiversity. The influence on the climate from human activity is mainly caused by combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. The construction sector is responsible for a large share of the emissions and has in addition a significant environmental impact by the energy used during the construction stage. At the time of writing, the construction and real estate industry is responsible for 40 percent of the global environmental impact.  The Swedish government intends on first of January 2022 to introduce a new demand on carbon footprint reports in conjunction with new construction projects as an action to decrease anthropogenic impact from the construction industry. To meet this demand and the increasing degree of digitalisation of the industry, engineering consulting company William Sale Partnership (WSP) Sweden has invested in automating carbon footprint reports. The company’s strategic business unit Byggprojektering has developed the digital tool Klimatdata Light to automate quantity calculations of carbon dioxide equivalents that are emitted in the construction stage. The tool is currently restricted to only calculating equivalents for building elements such as foundation and building frame, hence it does not produce complete climate declarations for the entire building. It is however planned to continue development of the function to be able to produce complete reports in the future. To be able to sell the automated carbon footprint reports produced by Klimatdata Light, WSP Sweden has identified a need to investigate how to motivate and design their business model.  The aim of this study was to investigate the national requirements for carbon footprint reports and what values that the reports could have for customers and engineering consulting firms, and thereafter design and propose possible business models for selling automated carbon footprint reports during the design phase in the construction process. The mapping was conducted through a literature study and two qualitative interview studies. The interviewees in the first interview study was seven steel hall manufacturers and in the second three employees at the engineering consulting company itself. In the first interview study two significant insights could be established: the interviewees did currently not work with environmental issues actively, but there was a belief that the subject is growing in importance and that there will be a need for consultancy in the future. From the second interview study with the employees, it was communicated that communication between the business units within the company is important when selling carbon footprint reports and that the reports could have an educational function both for the customer and within the own organisation. Collected materials from the interviews, combined with the literature study, was thereafter used to design two different types of business models. What the business models have in common is that they both are based on the same business model structure earlier used in industrial building.  In the first business model the automated carbon footprint report is meant to be sold for a fixed price and meet the need for customers who just want to fulfil the upcoming national demand. In the second business model on the other hand, the carbon footprint report is meant to be offered free of charge and included in a larger offering concept where the customer is offered a range of products and services in addition to the report. The underlying question that has been fundamental to this study is how the business model will look like for automated functions within the construction industry overall in the future. In what ways could you motivate the price for an automated function, which used to be paid for by the hour? This study gives the reader insights with that question in mind since automation and the questions automation arises is a growing topic within the industry.<br>Den globala klimatpåverkan från höga koldioxidutsläpp är fortsatt påtaglig på vår planet och hotar att utrota den biologiska mångfalden.

Abstract:
The works aimed at the further development and validation of models for CFD codes. For this reason, the new thermal-hydraulic test facility TOPFLOW was erected and equipped with wire-mesh sensors with high spatial and time resolution. Vertical test sections with nominal diameters of DN50 and DN200 operating with air-water as well as steam-water two-phase flows provided results on the evaluation of flow patterns, on the be¬haviour of the interfacial area as well as on interfacial momentum and heat transfer. The validation of the CFD-code for complex geometries was carried out using 3D void fraction and velocity distributions obtained in an experiment with an asymmetric obstacle in the large DN200 test section. With respect to free surface flows, stratified co- and counter-current flows as well as slug flows were studied in two horizontal test channels made from acrylic glass. Post-test calculations of these experiments succeeded in predicting the slug formation process. Corresponding to the main goal of the project, the experimental data was used for the model development. For vertical flows, the emphasis was put on lateral bubble forces (e.g. lift force). Different constitutive laws were tested using a Multi Bubble Size Class Test Solver that has been developed for this purpose. Basing on the results a generalized inhomogeneous Multiple Size Group (MUSIG) Model has been proposed and implemented into the CFD code CFX (ANSYS). Validation calculations with the new code resulted in the conclusion that particularly the models for bubble coalescence and fragmentation need further optimisation. Studies of single effects, like the assessment of turbulent dissipation in a bubbly flow and the analysis of trajectories of single bubbles near the wall, supplied other important results of the project.

Abstract:
The purpose of this action research study was to find out what considerations, from a multiple intelligences perspective, need to be taken into account when setting up and implementing a class on the design, evaluation and construction of web pages by Year 4 to 6 students. The teaching sessions are the first cycle in implementing classes for constructing web pages to showcase the work and activities that form part of the respective classroom programmes. The process included teaching the participants about the eight modes of intelligence as defined in Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences theory, developing criteria for evaluating web pages from a multiple intelligences perspective, as well as teaching the skills needed to utilise the software programs to create their web pages. Despite the intended focus on content and viewing it from a multiple intelligences perspective, technical skills for creating the web pages gained precedence. Giving students the opportunity tq demonstrate their learning, using ICT, in a way that best reflects the way or the intelligence modes they use to construct meaning has implications for educators and students. The gaining of technical skills, associated with emphasis on utilising ICT, needs to be balanced with the importance of the content and construction of meaning.
