Vinall, Jillian Frances. "Impact of repeated invasive procedures during neonatal intensive care on brain microstructure, growth, neurodevelopment and behavior in children born very preterm." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/55053.

Full text
Abstract:
As part of their lifesaving care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), infants born very preterm (between 24 and 32 weeks gestation), undergo frequent invasive procedures that induce pain and stress, during a period of rapid brain development. We examined whether repeated exposure to invasive procedures was associated with altered brain development, and thereby poorer neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcome in children born very preterm. We also explored whether parent interaction moderates long-term effects of invasive procedures on child behavior. Data were collected from two prospective cohorts of infants born ≤32 weeks gestation between February 2001–July 2004 and March 2006–January 2009. Neonatal data were recorded from birth to term-equivalent age. Infants in the 2006–2009 cohort were scanned sequentially, once near birth and again at term-equivalent age. Infants in the 2001–2004 cohort were followed-up at 18 months corrected age (CA), and again at 7.5 years of age, when they underwent an MRI. At 18 months CA, parents of the 2001–2004 cohort completed questionnaires and participated in a recorded play session with their child, from which the parent-child interaction was later coded. All statistical analyses were adjusted for known neonatal and clinical confounders. In a series of 4 studies, greater exposure to invasive procedures in the NICU was associated with slower postnatal body and head growth, and slower growth was associated with delayed cerebral cortical maturation. Among the preterm children exposed to a higher number of invasive procedures, more positive parental interaction was associated with fewer anxious/depressive behaviors reported at 18 months CA. Furthermore, greater exposure to invasive procedures was related to poorer white matter maturation at 7.5 years, and together these factors predicted lower IQ. Greater exposure to invasive procedures was associated with slower body and head growth, altered brain maturation and poorer outcomes, after adjustment for clinical confounders. It is necessary that pain management strategies be evaluated for the extent that they are brain protective, in order to minimize the long-term impact of ongoing pain/stress in the NICU. Furthermore, interventions should address the parent-child relationship in order to improve later outcomes.
Medicine, Faculty of
Graduate

Mungan, Murat Can. "Optimal Procedures in Criminal Law: Five Essays." Thesis, Boston College, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/1744.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Hideo Konishi
Becker (1968) provides a formal framework for analyzing various policies in criminal law. Within this framework there are potential criminals, who have varying benefits from committing an illegal act. They are subject to sanctions when they are caught and are found guilty for committing such acts. Accordingly, increased expected sanctions lead to greater deterrence. There are also costs associated with achieving such deterrence. Hence, there are optimal policy variables which balance costs and gains associated with increased deterrence. In my dissertation, in five independent but closely related essays, I address various issues related to criminal law by making use of optimal crime and deterrence models, which are similar to Becker (1968). First, I analyze the standard of proof in criminal trials and extend a justification as to why there are higher standards of proof in criminal trials versus civil trials. Next, I introduce the concept of mixed warning strategies, and justify the use of mixed as well as pure warning strategies in law enforcement. In a related essay, I show that it is optimal to punish repeat offenders more severely than first time offenders, provided that offenders gain experience in evading detection by committing offenses. In my fourth essay, I identify reasons as to why it is welfare improving to allow individuals to self-report conduct crimes. Finally, I propose a simple framework to incorporate the concept of remorse in the economic analysis of criminal law, and show that the Beckerian maximal fine result need not hold when some individuals feel remorse
Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2010
Submitted to: Boston College. Van, Zyl Shalaine. "Understanding repeat attendance in market research studies : reasons for regular participation and recruitment procedures." Diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/23120.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents the findings of a qualitative study on understanding the motivating factors underlying repeat attendance in market research studies and the ways in which repeat attendance participants are recruited to take part in such studies. The study was approached from an interpretivist paradigm, employing the self-determination theory and the theory of self-concept maintenance. Purposive sampling was applied. The data was collected by conducting eight semi-structured interviews with participants who had taken part in numerous market research studies. Through thematic analysis, sub themes were identified from the data, combined into second-level themes and grouped into the following three overarching themes: (1) participation motivation; (2) honesty/dishonesty; and (3) recruitment procedures. It was found that participants were not only motivated by extrinsic motivators such as incentives, but that intrinsic motivators were also present. Furthermore, a level of dishonesty was also evident, not only among the participants, but among the recruiters as well.
Psychology
M.A. (Psychology with specialisation in Research Consultation)

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
國立中央大學
環境工程研究所
100
Suspended solids is not only one of the standard of environmental regulations regulating the flow of suspended solid particles, but also has tremendous hazard impacts on the environment. Therefore for wastewater treatment, how to monitor and control the processing unit effectively is one of the important tasks. In recent years, spectrophotometry spectroscopy has developed quite mature, not only fast and economic, but also able to conduct a multi-component analysis of water samples. For the removal of suspended solids, we used to rely on gravity precipitation to remove the precipitation processing unit, so the particle precipitation characteristics and the hydraulic retention time settings will play a decisive role on the efficiency of processing units. In this study, the absorption spectra measured by the spectrophotometer were analyzed for the effect of suspended solids; using the principle of proportionality of visible light absorption area to establish a measurement method which can be applied in the real factory process in automated monitoring and control. Due to the detect range of instruments, the measurement method has better measurement results in the range of 30 mg / L ~ 250 mg / L. In the measurement of the hydraulic retention time, this study through the combination of suspended solids measurement and repeatedly scan to estimate the hydraulic retention time. In the scan time about 1500 seconds, when the precipitation efficiency of the particles reach a certain level, you can calculate the time point that the precipitation amount does not change through 1500 seconds of scan data. And then assume that the precipitation amount for this time point is fixed, we can value the concentration of suspended solid particles in the subsequent time. Further, assume that when the time the particle concentration is lower than 30 mg / L is the time required for the hydraulic retention time. However, this method, due to the assumption of the precipitation amount being fixed, is not the same with the realities. So the resulting hydraulic retention time is shorter than the real required time. But in the of view of the automatic monitoring and control, there are sufficient information required to control the precipitation processing unit, and further to improve the efficiency of the precipitation processing unit.

Kleinert, Kelly Lynn. "A Comparison of Bidirectional Naming for Familiar and Non-Familiar Stimuli and the Effects of a Repeated Probe Procedure for First Grade Students." Thesis, 2018. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8ZG8871.

Full text
Abstract:
The experimenter conducted three experiments to compare incidental language acquisition of familiar and non-familiar stimuli, and asses the effects of specific pairing experiences on the emergence of bidirectional naming (BiN) for familiar and non-familiar stimuli. In Experiment I the experimenter assessed the numbers of accurate untaught listener and speaker responses for familiar and non-familiar stimuli emitted by 20 first-grade participants following incidental naming experiences. A statistical comparison of the results using a dependent paired samples t-tests revealed significant differences across familiar and non-familiar stimuli for: (a) listener responses, (b) speaker tact responses, and (c) speaker intraverbal tact responses. In Experiment II, the experimenter tested the effectiveness of a repeated probe procedure on the emergence of BiN for familiar and non-familiar stimuli using a combined multiple probe and simultaneous treatment design. Six participants were selected from Experiment I based on their absence of BiN for non-familiar stimuli. The experimenter implemented a repeated probe intervention procedure across two treatment conditions: (1) non-familiar stimuli sets and (2) mixed (non-familiar and familiar) stimuli sets. Following each intervention phase, post-intervention naming probe results demonstrated increased numbers of accurate untaught listener and speaker responses for familiar and non-familiar stimuli by all participants. Time constraints of the school year limited completion of the intervention for 2 participant dyads. Findings suggested the potential effectiveness of the repeated probe procedure. Experiment III was a systematic replication of Experiment II with 6 different participants. Results demonstrated the emergence of: (a) BiN for non-familiar stimuli by five participants; and (b) BiN for familiar stimuli by all participants who demonstrated absence during pre-intervention probe sessions. Findings from Experiments II and III suggested that the repeated probe procedure effectively functioned as a conditioning procedure for the emergence of conditioned reinforcement for observing responses to visual and vocal familiar and non-familiar stimuli. That is, the repeated probe procedure shifted the reinforcement effects of conditioned stimuli to previously neutral stimuli, bringing one’s observing responses under a new stimulus control. This stimulus control (i.e., reinforcement effects) embedded within functioned to select out the participant’s observing responses during incidental naming experiences.
