Abstract:
This paper focuses on the fate of Jaroslav Klecan, a native from southern Bohemia, a pre-war member of the Communist Party who had left as a volunteer for the Spanish Civil War in late 1937. He fought in the battalion T. G. Masaryk of the 129th interbrigade. After the fall of the Spanish Republic, he was interned in the French camp in Gurs. When the Second World War begun he enrolled to the Czechoslovak Army, albeit he was probably never committed at the front. After the French capitulation, he stayed in the free zone and joined the French resistance movement in the FTP-MOI group led by Ladislav Holdoš. However, the Comintern soon ordered him and few other Czechoslovak Resistance fighters to return to the occupied homeland. Klecan arrived to the Protectorate in 1941 and affiliated the Communist resistance movement in Bohemia immediately. He was arrested by the Nazi secret police on 24 April 1942, together with Julius Fučík and others. After a series of interrogations, the German People’s Court sentenced him to death and he was executed in Berlin-Plötzensee on 8 September 1943. He is known as “Mirek” from Fučík’s Notes from the Gallows.

Abstract:
The present paper focuses on how the Czechoslovak society received and reacted to the live radio broadcasting of FIFA World Cup in 1934. The public listening to the running commentaries raised the interest in sports among new social strata and in new geographic areas of the then Czechoslovakia. Radio broadcastings undoubtedly provoked a higher sensibility of listeners, as the example examined in this paper of the spread of rumours concerning the death of several Czechoslovak players, proved. The last part of the present paper looks at how the broadcasting of FIFA World Cup became a Czechoslovakian site of memory.

Abstract:
I sustain in my book El reportaje como metodologia del periodismo: una polifonia de saberes (Reportage as the methodology of journalism: polyphony of knowledge), (Osorio, 2017), that journalism leads, guides, interprets, explains, teaches and above all deeply tries to understand the world and its running; thus its essence is freedom of thought, expression and social dialogue or conversation to set in place and to enhance consensus and democratic participation. In this process, journalism shows and enlightens ways (methods) through reportage, which has been very much so studied as a journalist genre around the world; countless books and articles have been published about it and several universities have granted PhD titles for theses written about it. The North American and European bibliography on it is abundant - which has been taken in consideration at this research - and widely known; but little is known of what has been done in our South American continent. Therefore, in this book I put in perspective two major examples: Brazil and Colombia. Nevertheless, I must emphasize that when this subject is addressed, it is done so through the lens of journalistic genres, but not under the dimension of the methodology of journalism, which has been away from the eyes of theoreticians, scholars and researchers. In this sense, my book is an epistemological turn, as it is innovative and pioneer for contributing with another vision, which studies, analyses and proposes reportage as the methodology of journalism, by presenting some findings and by opening new theoretical perspectives in literary journalism. Abstract:
As a journalistic genre, reportage is determined by the context in which it is produced. It transports the reader to a specific time and place, but, unlike the news, it does not depend on current events. Therefore, a reporter is not constrained by brevity and, like any other author, aims to develop their own style. This was the case of Ryszard Kapuściński, who was the Polish Press Agency’s only correspondent in Latin America from 1967 to 1972. After this experience, Kapuściński returned several times to the continent from 2001 to 2005 and gave lectures for the Fundacion Nuevo Periodismo Iberomericano, founded by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. His reportages about the continent are considered highly political (in fact Artur Domosławski describes him as a naive “true believer” in communism during his stay as a correspondent). This article, however, views the significance of his time on the new continent from a different perspective. Was the most important Latin American influence on Kapuściński actually the style and genre that he developed as he explored a new kind of reportage: ‘‘magical journalism”?

Abstract:
Abstract The article illuminates Heike Geißler’s book Saisonarbeit’s relation to the tradition of the reportage genre since the 19th century, and shows why this genre is of current relevance, especially in view of the latest restructuring of work. Although talk of the widespread digitalization of labor implies a fundamental transformation of its conditions, the mail-order business represented in Saisonarbeit tends to evoke reminiscences of past phases of capitalist production. It is precisely here that the reportage has a special function as a report of vivid experiences.

Abstract:
This article is an attempt to present the history of Polish radio reportage in a synthetic way, pointing out the most important features of the genre as well as the specificity of the Polish School of Reportage. The qualities developed there (including the “purity of form” and authenticity of sound) became distinguishing elements of the Polish reportage in the international arena. The artistic value of the audio creations makes today’s radio art researchers situate both radio play and sound reportage in the category of audio literature. This paper presents the development of radio reportage, taking into account the historical context as well as the communication perspective. Pointing to the aesthetic function of the message, the reportage is defined as a work of radio art, considered in terms of artistic impact.

Abstract:
Pakistani English is considered to be a distinct variety of English on the basis of its comparison with British English and American English. However, this claim is partial as its distinction from other varieties of English particularly used in South Asia has not yet been established. Thus, there is a need to investigate the similarities and differences between Pakistani and South Asian Englishes, and to analyse how far Pakistani English is distinct from other South Asian Englishes. Therefore, the present study aims at analyzing the linguistic features of Pakistani English as a separate variety from other varieties of English used in India and Bangladesh. For this purpose, a corpus of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi English newspaper reportage was developed and analyzed using Biber’s (1988) multivariate/ multidimensional approach. The findings indicated that Pakistani press reportage is different from Indian and Bangladeshi press reportage on all the five dimensions, especially on Dimension 2, in which Pakistani press reportage is narrative, while Bangladeshi press reportage is non-narrative in nature. On Dimension 3, the press reportage of Pakistan is highly explicit as compared to Indian and Bangladeshi press reportage. Further, the sub-categories of Pakistani press reportage also exhibit variation when compared to the sub-categories of Indian and Bangladeshi press reportage. The possible causes of linguistic variation among these countries are their culture and geographical origin. It is further suggested that South Asian Englishes are evolving rapidly and linguistic variation among them certainly be a worth researchable area. Abstract:
Purpose – The management literature in recent years have been paying attention to the concept of corporate social responsibility. This could be attributed to stakeholder concerns of ethical practices of companies globally. This study focuses on how an indigenous Ghanaian bank reports its CSR activities online and in the annual reports. Design/methodology/approach – A conceptual framework was adopted from the extant literature and used as the basis of comparative content analysis of social responsibility data on CAL Bank’s website, www.calbank.net and the annual reports. We compared the social responsibility reportage on the website with the social responsibility reportage from the annual reports of the Bank from 2003-2009. We also conducted in-depth interviews with senior management of the bank to develop a deeper understanding of CAL Bank’s online CSR reportage. Findings: There seems to be a consistency between the annual reports and the corporate website CSR reportage of the bank. There however seems to be under-reportage of CAL Bank’s CSR activity online as their CSR online reportage focuses mainly on external disclosures. It also came to light that the bank’s CSR reportage is fragmented and is not integrated into a marketing communication plan. These findings demonstrate the challenges the bank faces in coordinating and integrating its marketing communication activities. Originality/value – Studies on online CSR communications within developing countries context is limited. This study does not only help bridge the gap but contributes to improving bank marketing practices in Ghana as well.

Abstract:
The article considers event reportage as one of the journalistic genres, which is the most important component of the mass communication discourse. The authors focus on the features of the communicative strategies of modern event reportage. The proposed comparative analysis is carried out by considering English and Russian reports. Two main communicative strategies of modern event reportages are identified as objective transmission of the news and the impact on the recipient with the help of the author's commentary on the described event. The communicative strategies of English event reportage have a deliberately emphasized focus on objective coverage of events and maximum restraint of the assessments included in it, while the communicative strategies of Russian reportage are aimed not only at covering the event, but also to a greater extent at its emotional and evaluative perception. The research of communicative strategies and their speech specifics of modern event reportage created in different languages shows the national linguistic and extra linguistic features of this popular journalistic genre.

Abstract:
The study aims to highlight the evaluative strategies associated with the Biblical modes of speech and thought presentation. An eclectic pragma-stylistic model of analysis is developed to test the validity of the hypotheses that the targeted modes of discourse are almost always internally and/or externally evaluated by the narrator, and that the reportive modes of speech and thought are evaluative in respect to the quotative modes. The study arrived to the conclusion that different modes of speech and thought are exploited in building narrative genres. These modes form two interrelated types of discourse: quotative and reportive. Four modes contribute to the occurrence of the quotative discourse which are direct speech, free direct speech, direct thought, and free direct thought. The reportive discourse occurs when using one of the reportive modes which include indirect speech, free indirect speech, narrative report of speech act, narrator’s representation of voice, indirect thought, free indirect thought, narrative report of thought act, and internal narration. When employed in the targeted Biblical discourse, the quotative and reportive modes are often evaluated by the Biblical narrator. Evaluations of this kind implicate additional meanings and affect reader’s interpretation of the represented speeches or thoughts. The Biblical reportive modes are often evaluative in respect to the quotative ones. The Biblical narrator’s internal, external, and interactional evaluative strategies contribute to the occurrence of the Biblical evaluative discourse of speech and thought presentation.

Abstract:
Reportage drawing is a way of visual journalism and records opinions as well as observation. In ethnographic fieldwork, reportage drawing has been used as a method of visually documenting ethnographic discoveries. The question is: what are the most significant skills that a reportage drawing artist need to effectively document visual materials? This paper proposes three important skills: speed-drawing, understanding of subjectivity, and appropriate use of conventions. Speed-drawing is essential for on-location settings to help quickly capture important aspects of moving subjects. Understanding the influence of subjectivity is important in an ethnographic setting, as it helps the artist to realize what cultural characteristics are valuable from their point of view so they can quickly decide what to record and what to omit in a fast-paced reportage setting. Applying conventions makes it easier to translate three-dimensional scenes into two-dimensional drawings and can also be used to add more information, but needs to be used wisely to avoid loss of crucial visual data. With practice-based research as core methodology, this project justifies the proposed argument with the analysis of my own reportage drawing practice, including both the process and the outcome.

The distinct example of thisphenomenon is creation of a multimedia reportage. It is a combination of the classic journalistictext and elements such as: pictures, sounds, films, animations and visualizations. A typical qualityof multimedia reportage is interactivity. This paper contains analysis of one of the first Polishexamples of the new kind of reportage – Boskie Światło by Jacek Hugo-Bader. In the presentedpaper all new media tools used by the reporter and effect of this usage are described. Followingthis – the influence of new media on non-fiction literature evolution is depicted. The article analyses the reportage of John Hersey, Svetlana Alexievich and Katarzyna Boni devoted to the victims of the atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima, as well as the nuclear reactor accidents in Chernobyl and Fukushima. Presenting the consequences of disasters, not only in material, but above all in human terms, the author makes an attempt to find out how societies, including the heroes of reportage, process the trauma of contamination through culture, and what is the role in this process of the fictionalized type of this genre of the non-fiction prose. To answer the question whether the contemporary reportage can serve as a culture-creating factor, the author analyses the linguistic and stylistic features, which carry cultural meanings, as well as the composition of reportage texts revealing the way the authors build the world presented of their authentic stories.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Based on interviews with Swiss journalists who specialise in war and international reportage, this article investigates the extent to which social media impacts on reportage of war and conflict. The interviews examine journalists’ perceptions of the threats and opportunities posed by use of social media in reporting conflict, by investigating how journalists position themselves and their practices within this new media ecosystem. In particular, the interviews explore whether challenges to professional journalism encountered in previous studies of reportage of war and conflict are overcome by the use of social media. It explores if social media can mitigate the effects of military and government restriction of information, changing newsroom dynamics and issues of audience engagement in reportage of conflict. The findings highlight that in the context of war and conflict the dynamism creates opportunities for fast, news dissemination, pluralised voices in reportage and extended audience reach. However, reporters must also negotiate the complexities that fast, multi-medium and multi-sourced information create for reporting practices, especially in terms of verification of information and contextualisation. Thus this article argues that although social media adds dynamism to journalistic environments, this dynamism also brings new levels of complexity to journalistic practice that professional media workers must negotiate.

Abstract:
This article systematically analyzes the cognitive structure of discursive deixis. The category of deixis is interpreted in terms of structuring actual events in reportage messages and texts, an impartial representation of objective reality as an epistemological entity reproduced and changed by the journalist. Deixis is interpreted as a pragmatic category that is structured around the corresponding ideal cognitive model, measured on the prototypical scale, since it is implemented based on nuclear and peripheral means of expression. It is argued that deictic means reproduce specific mental spaces in reportage texts, while the metaphorical generating basis for discursive deixis is spatial deixis. The functioning of discursive deixis is based on the metaphorical awareness of the reportage text as an epistemological entity unfolding in space and time. In the reportage narration, the journalist shifts the deictic center from the situation in objective reality to the textual embodiment of the image of himself / herself. In this case, the category of locativity is represented as a cognitive structure that captures the spatio-temporal characteristics of an actual event through the prism of journalistic perception. Based on these characteristics, the reader localizes this event, interprets it in terms of the general event canvas unfolding in objective reality. In the reportage text, the deictic center is not static: the detail of the actual event is carried out, among other things, by means of shifts in this center. Current events are reproduced by the journalist taking into account specific spatial and temporal parameters. These events are often considered against the background of previous or subsequent (hypothetical) eventfulness, and therefore shifts in the original deictic center of the reportage text are a natural phenomenon.

Review of: Conflict Coverage Promotion: High Quality or High Concept? By Chris Veits. Hamburg: Anchor Academic Publishing, 2014, 95pp. ISBN 978-3-95489-200-6.Due to his background in entertainment television Chris Veits would seem uniquely qualified to conduct a semiotic analysis of the conflict coverage promotional spots on CNN International and Al Jazeera English. However, admirers of Al Jazeera English might be surprised to learn how both networks routinely employed high concept material in the segments lauding their reporting of the multinational intervention in Libya and the broader Arab Awakening. Although at times semiotic approaches can seem like the scrutiny of minutiae, the unusual choice of promotional clips provides an opportunity to demonstrate how image centric these channels’ claims about their professional integrity and morality really are.

Abstract:
This article explores how several novelists in the first half of the twentieth century, including James Agee, Jack London, George Orwell, and John Steinbeck, portrayed other, often marginal, real lives in works of reportage and documentary writing—terms variously defined and utilised by critics and practitioners, but seen here as hybrid, intersecting forms of life writing. It argues that such work has an extremely artful element of verbal portraiture of real-life people, often in dialogue with photography. The process of writing and witnessing reportage work differs substantially from that of fiction. Focusing on certain factors key to the portraiture in reportage—including unfamiliarity, representativeness, standpoint, and objectivity—the article analyses these writers’ treatment of them. The extent to which these writers revealed their documentary or reportorial role to their subjects, or disguised it, is also considered. Moving between international, cultural, political and social contexts, and deeply informed by chance and accident, early twentieth century reportage emerges as a highly interactive, volatile, and intersubjective space in its portraiture of others, nonetheless defined finally by the writer’s point of view.

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer in the Context of the Main Features of New New Journalism The aim of this article is to present Jon Krakauer’s reportage Into Thin Air in the context of the main features of New New Journalism. The author critically discusses the most important elements of this paradigm, which refers on the one hand to the legacy of muckrakers from the beginning of 20th-century, and on the other hand – to the tradition of American reporters from the 1960s and 1970s. Detailed research was devoted to the Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air, which has been described as a journalistic syncretic form, combining elements of auto-reportage, immersive reportage and paraliterature.
