The statistics provided by the United Nations Economic Commission (ECE) and the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) supply us with an up-to-date insight into the world robot market. This joint report tells us a great deal about the technological evolution of industrial robots since their introduction at the end of the 1960s. We know that real prices have declined, and the performance of robots is continuously improving. Robots are now in use in a wide range of applications in countries worldwide.

Abstract:
Literate programming is becoming increasingly trendy for data analysis because it allows the generation of dynamic-analysis reports for communicating data analysis and eliminates untraceable human errors in analysis reports. Traditionally, literate programming includes separate processes for compiling the code and preparing the documentation. While this workflow might be satisfactory for software documentation, it is not ideal for writing statistical analysis reports. Instead, these processes should run in parallel. In this article, I introduce the weaver package, which examines this idea by creating a new log system in HTML or LATEX that can be used simultaneously with the Stata log system. The new log system provides many features that the Stata log system lacks; for example, it can render mathematical notations, insert figures, create publication-ready dynamic tables, and style text, and it includes a built-in syntax highlighter. The weaver package also produces dynamic PDF documents by converting the HTML log to PDF or by typesetting the LATEX log and thus provides a real-time preview of the document without recompiling the code. I also discuss potential applications of the weaver package.

Abstract:
Abstract This article aims to challenge official statistics providers and statistics educators to ponder on how to help non-specialist adult users of statistics develop those aspects of statistical literacy that pertain to official statistics. We first document the gap in the literature in terms of the conceptual basis and educational materials needed for such an undertaking. We then review skills and competencies that may help adults to make sense of statistical information in areas of importance to society. Based on this review, we identify six elements related to official statistics about which non-specialist adult users should possess knowledge in order to be considered literate in official statistics: (1) the system of official statistics and its work principles; (2) the nature of statistics about society; (3) indicators; (4) statistical techniques and big ideas; (5) research methods and data sources; and (6) awareness and skills for citizens’ access to statistical reports. Based on this ad hoc typology, we discuss directions that official statistics providers, in cooperation with statistics educators, could take in order to (1) advance the conceptualization of skills needed to understand official statistics, and (2) expand educational activities and services, specifically by developing a collaborative digital textbook and a modular online course, to improve public capacity for understanding of official statistics.

Abstract:
Background: Apache Cassandra is a highly scalable distributed system that can handle large amounts of data through several nodes / virtual machines grouped together as Apache Cassandra clusters. When one such node in an Apache Cassandra cluster is down, there is a need for a tool or an approach that can identify this failed virtual machine by analyzing the data generated from each of the virtual machines in the cluster. Manual analysis of this data is tedious and can be quite strenuous. Objectives: The objective of the thesis is to identify, build and evaluate a solution that can detect and report the behaviour of the erroneous or failed virtual machine by analyzing the data generated by each virtual machine in an Apache Cassandra cluster. In the study, we analyzed two specific data sources from each virtual machine, i.e., the wait reports and Apache Cassandra statistics, and proposed a tool named AnoDect to realize this objective. The tool has been built using the input provided by the technical support team at Ericsson through interviews and was also evaluated by them to realize its reliability, usability and, usefulness in an industrial setting. Methods: A case study methodology has been piloted at Ericsson and semi-structured interviews have been conducted to identify the key features in the data along with the functionalities AnoDect needs to perform to assist the CIL team (technical support team at Ericsson) to rectify the erroneous virtual machine in the cluster. An experimental evaluation and a static user evaluation have been conducted, as a part of the case study evaluation, where the experimental evaluation is conducted to identify the best technique for AnoDect's anomaly detection in wait reports and the static evaluation has been conducted to evaluate AnoDect for its reliability and usability once it is deployed for use. Results: From the feedback provided by the CIL team through the questionnaire, it has been observed that the results provided by the tool are quite satisfactory, in terms of usability and reliability of the tool.

Abstract:
In this thesis I carry out an encompassing analysis of the problem of measurement error in retrospectively collected work histories using data from the “Longitudinal Study of the Unemployed”. This dataset has the unique feature of linking survey responses to a retrospective question on work status to administrative data from the Swedish Register of Unemployment. Under the assumption that the register data is a gold standard I explore three research questions: i) what is the prevalence of and the reasons for measurement error in retrospective reports of unemployment; ii) what are the consequences of using such survey data subject to measurement error in event history analysis; and iii) what are the most effective statistical methods to adjust for such measurement error. Regarding the first question I find substantial measurement error in retrospective reports of unemployment, e.g. only 54% of the subjects studied managed to report the correct number of spells of unemployment experienced in the year prior to the interview. Some reasons behind this problem are clear, e.g. the longer the recall period the higher the prevalence of measurement error. However, some others depend on how measurement error is defined, e.g. women were associated with a higher probability of misclassifying spells of unemployment but not with misdating them. To answer the second question I compare different event history models using duration data from the survey and the register as their response variable. Here I find that the impact of measurement error is very large, attenuating regression estimates by about 90% of their true value, and this impact is fairly consistent regardless of the type of event history model used. In the third part of the analysis I implement different adjustment methods and compare their effectiveness. Here I note how standard methods based on strong assumptions such as SIMEX or Regression Calibration are incapable of dealing with the complexity of the measurement process under analysis. More positive results are obtained through the implementation of ad hoc Bayesian adjustments capable of accounting for the different patterns of measurement error using a mixture model.

Full text
Abstract:
As the software industry grows larger by the minute, the need for automated solutions within bug report management is on the rise. Although some research has been conducted in the area of bug handling, new, faster or more precise approaches are yet to be developed. A bug report typically contains a free text observations field where the issue can be described by a human. Research regarding processing of this type of field is extensive, however, bug reports are often accompanied with system log files which have been given less attention so far. In the 4G LTE telecommunications network, the available system log files are many and several are likely to aid the routing of bug reports. In this thesis, one system log file was chosen to be evaluated; the alarm log. The alarm logs are time series count data containing alarms raised by the system. The alarm log data have been pre-processed with data mining techniques. The Apriori algorithm has been used to mine for specific alarms and alarming objects which indicates that the bug report should be solved by a particular developer group. We extend the Apriori algorithm to a temporal setting by using a customised time dependent confidence measure. To further mine for interesting sequences of events in the logs, the sequence mining approach SPADE has been used. The extracted class-associated sequences from both pre-processing approaches are transformed into binary features possible to use as predictors in any prediction model. The results have been evaluated by predicting the correct developer group with two different methods; logistic regression and DO-probit. Logistic regression was regularised with the elastic net penalty to avoid computational issues as well as handling the sparse covariate set. DO-probit was used with a horseshoe prior; it is well suited for the sparse covariate regression problem as it is customised to obtain signals in sparse, noisy data. The results indicate that a data mining approach for processing alarm logs is promising. The results show that the rules obtained with the Apriori mining process are suitable for mining the alarm logs as most binary representations of the rules used as covariates in logistic regression are kept in the equations for the expected classes with strongly positive coefficients. Although, the overall improvement in accuracy from using the alarms logs in addition to the learned topics from free text fields is modest, the alarm logs are concluded to be a good complement to the free text information as some Apriori covariates appears to be better suited to predict some classes than some topics.

Abstract: This master research is a qualitative multiside study, marked by the reference of phenomenology and hermeneutics, and aims to understand how psychiatrists of community-based mental health services deal with the dimension of the particular experience of people diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia in the caring process. We have assumed that to facilitate the recovery of people with severe mental disorders and to reduce stigma is necessary to develop ways of caring in which the very experience of illness is not ignored. Therefore this work was supported by the notion of "recovery", which in the international arena has contributed to enhance the meaning of the user experience. To accomplish our goal, besides doing a review on the concept of recovery in order to better understand it, we conducted focus groups with psychiatrists from Campinas and Rio de Janeiro. In these groups we intended to access to the experience of psychiatrists in formulating diagnosis of schizophrenia and treatment proposition. Based on the material produced in this study, we realized that the formulation of schizophrenia diagnostic has a major impact on the experience of caring user. And the concept of schizophrenia as a chronic and severe illness seems to largely influence the type of care these professionals will offer, as well as the expectations they have regarding the future life of the user. The psychiatrists? idea of treating seems to be permeated not by the idea of recovery, but by the principles and goals of psychosocial rehabilitation in its most orthopedic and normalizing sense, which has great compatibility with the biomedical model, and provides few tools to access the world and experience of the user

Abstract:
In self-report data, participants who provide incorrect responses are known as intentional inaccurate responders. This dissertation provides statistical analyses for address intentional inaccurate responses in the data. Previous work with adolescent self-report, labeled survey participants who intentionally provide inaccurate answers as mischievous responders. This phenomenon also occurs in clinical research. For example, pregnant women who smoke may report that they are nonsmokers. Our advantage is that we do not solely have self-report answers and can verify responses with lab values. Currently, there is no clear method for handling these intentional inaccurate respondents when it comes to making statistical inferences. We propose a using an EM algorithm to account for the intentional behavior while maintaining all responses in the data. The performance of this model is evaluated using simulated data and real data. The strengths and weaknesses of the EM algorithm approach will be demonstrated.

Abstract:
Deterministic ship motions predictions methodologies represent a promising emerging approach, which could be embedded in decision support systems for certain types of operation. The typically envisioned prediction chain starts from the remote sensing of the wave elevation through wave radar technology. An estimated wave field is then fitted to the data, it is propagated in space and time, and it is finally fed to a ship motion prediction model. Prediction time horizons, typically, are practically limited to the order of minutes. Deterministic predictions are, however, inevitably associated with prediction uncertainty which is seldom quantified. This paper, therefore, presents a semi-analytical methodology for the estimation of ship motion prediction error statistics in ensemble domain as function of the forecasting time, assuming linear Gaussian irregular waves and stationary linear ship motions. This information can be used, for instance, to supplement deterministic forecasting with corresponding confidence intervals. The paper describes the theoretical background of the developed methodology and reports some numerical application examples.

Abstract:
Abstract Accuracy of Voluntary Observing Ship’s reports is evaluated by a one-to-one comparison with ERA-interim database, specifically considering significant wave height. A first screening allows to detect the most common and undeniable mistakes, as for instance clear errors in reporting the position of the vessel, and delete these observations. Moreover, previous literature is considered to remove systematic biases. Then each report is matched with the appropriate numerical data in terms of location and time, in order to evaluate the scattering of the data, to identify the outliers, and to further prune the database. The procedure allows not only to maintain a database clean from clearly wrong information, which can compromise the statistics, but also to recognize areas and conditions in which the mismatch between numerical data and observations is critical, eventually speculating on the motivations.

Abstract:
The main question that this paper seeks to explore is: What contextual factors and conditions are contributing to the present higher education environment in Malta? To address this question, the author conducts a systematic study by examining the changing context of higher education from a legislative, economic and political perspective. The aim of this paper is to outline the determining influences that are shaping Malta’s higher education context. The research methods employed in this paper are mainly two: the first method involves the analysis of documents and data published in international academic journals and local reports. Statistics published by the National Commission for Further and Higher Education (NCFHE) and the National Statistics Office (NSO) were the main sources of local Maltese statistics. The second research method involves national and institutional data that was specifically requested by the author and that was never published before. NCFHE, the University of Malta (UM) and Malta College for Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) were asked to provide data in order to present a comparative analysis by comparing local data with what has been published internationally. UM and MCAST are the two main public Maltese higher education institutions. In all instances headcount data is presented.

Abstract:
According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, there are about 6.5 million visually impaired in Brazil. A frequentissue is the insertion of them in hazardous environments signaledby signs only. Solutions must be produced to improve the life qualityof visually impaired whether at work or in public places. In thissense, the present paper presents an application of danger signrecognition aimed at people with visual impairment through asupervised learning classifier called Haar Cascade. Furthermore, the paper reports preliminary results regarding effectiveness ofthe proposed system applied in a set of images. Overall, for themajority of the samples, the proposed system achieved a promisingscore and this can be a good alternative for studies that aim visuallyimpaired inclusion in dangerous environments.

Abstract:
Both state police and the National Automotive Sampling System/Crashworthiness Data System (NASS/CDS) keep automotive collision statistics to varying levels of detail. Some of these details (e.g., collision relative velocity and driver height and weight) are reported in the NASS/CDS, but not in state databases. This article explores whether these details are confounding factors that would bias conclusions based on analysis of state data. To determine this, a methodology was created to predict overall risk based only on the distribution of possible confounding factors experienced by each manufacturer. Relative impact velocity (Delta-V) and driver height and weight are found not to be true confounding factors. Although the distribution of possible confounding factors varies somewhat among manufacturers, the impact on overall expected risk is minimal, and therefore evaluation of risk based on datasets that do not contain information for Delta-V and driver height and weight appears appropriate. The accuracy of match between police reporting and NASS/CDS was also explored and found consistent across manufacturers. Therefore, inaccuracies between police reports and NASS/CDS should not bias comparisons of risk between manufacturers.

Abstract This paper reports the models of the designer’s thought process based on a protocol analysis from the viewpoint of design information structure and its formation process, which can be a fundamental part of practical design support tools. A series of four design meetings in a company, with intervals of several weeks, were observed to derive these models. The models consist of information elements derived from the cognitive design problem-solving process, and represent the conceptual design process by the derivation relationship among the information elements. The scenario is considered as an important information element to promote the evolution of product design. The proposed models are proven by protocol analysis with statistics and a transitional view of the coding scheme based on the models.

Abstract:
Major scale projects have been implemented in Turkey in the context of FYDPs to reduce interregional disparities. Funds for these projects were provided from either WB and EU or Turkey’s internal resources. A new application was started in 2006 as parallel to the establishment of Development Agencies in the context of harmonisation process to the EU. There are 26 Development Agencies in Turkey. In this study, KUZKA was selected as research area. Secondary data (call for projects, reports, data of the Ministry of Development, statistics, etc) were used and grants distributed by the KUZKA were examined via PESTLE Analysis. In substance, effects of grants were handled point schemes of politics, economics, social, technological, legal and environmental point of view and also contribution of the KUZKA to regional development in Turkey have been determined.

Abstract:
Sleep is an important component of healthy lifestyles. Worldwide reports suggest that one in every three adults suffers from insomnia. University students are vulnerable to insomnia due to their stressful lifestyle and inconsistent sleeping schedules, which contribute to poor, sleep hygiene. The purpose of this study is to explore the prevalence of sleeping problems among university students in Qatar and to investigate factors contributing to insomnia development. A cross-sectional survey utilizing two validated sleep questionnaires, the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and the sleep hygiene index (SHI), were administered to Qatar University (QU) students in either English or Arabic. An online survey was sent to all QU students through e-mail. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse and report the findings. A total of 2,062 students responded to this survey. Most of the respondents were females, Qataris, and the majority of them belonged to the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics or Engineering. Around 25% of the participating students reported previous use of sleep aids. The findings indicated that the majority of the students had poor sleep quality (69.7%) and poor sleep hygiene (79%). A positive association was found between sleep quality and sleep hygiene (r = 0.39; p < 0.0001). College distribution and marital status were shown to significantly influence sleep quality (p =0.031 and p=0.02 respectively). The regression analysis revealed that sleep hygiene had the greatest effect on sleep quality (accounting for 7% of the variance) and individuals with good sleep hygiene were 4 times more likely to have good sleep quality. The findings of this study suggest that poor sleep quality and inadequate sleep hygiene practices are common among university students in Qatar, both of which may have a negative impact on students’ academic performance which warrants further investigation in future studies.

Abstract:
"Objectives—Linking national survey data with administrative data sources enables researchers to conduct analyses that would not be possible with each data source alone. Recently, the Data Linkage Program at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) released updated Linked Mortality Files, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data linked to the National Death Index mortality files. Two versions of the files were released: restricted-use files available through NCHS and Federal Statistical Research Data Centers and public-use files. To reduce the reidentification risk, statistical disclosure limitation methods were applied to the public-use files before they were released. This included limiting the amount of mortality information available and perturbing cause of death and follow-up time for select records. Methods—To assess the comparability of the restricted-use and public-use files, relative hazard ratios for all-cause and cause-specific mortality using Cox proportional hazards models were estimated and compared. Results—The comparative analysis found that the two data files yield similar descriptive and model results. Suggested citation: Mirel LB, Zhang C, Cox CS, Ye Y, El Burai Félix S, Golden C. Abstract:
This report provides methodologies and processes of data enrichment and enhanced accessibility of Waterborne Commerce and Statistics Center (WCSC) maintained databases. These databases house tabular and statistical data that reports on The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Civil Works Division National Waterway Network (NWN), which geospatially represents approximately 1,000 harbors and 25,000 miles of channels and waterways. WCSC is a division of The Institute for Water Resources (IWR). They have been tasked with the international collection, maintenance, and archival of all records involving commercial movements and commerce that occur on federal waterways. The current records structure is a large, tabular dataset and limited to the systems and processes put in place prior to the computing standards and capabilities available today. Methods have been tested and utilized to bring the tabular datasets into an optimized, modern geospatial network and expanded upon to create a higher resolution than previously maintained by the WCSC. This report will expand upon the applied methodologies to optimize data queries and the overall enhancement of the data system to allow for linkages to various other sources of information for commerce data enhancement for decision support assistance.
