Full textThemain objective of ourwork is the detailed description of the representation of symmetric groups (known also as permutations). For this purpose we organize the work in three chapters. In the first, a study is carried out of the symmetric groups in terms of algebraic properties, with emphasis in describing how conjugation operates within. In Chapter 2 a general theory of linear representation of groups in vector spaces is developed. Irreducible representations are important as instruments that allow us to build more general structures. Finally, in Chapter 3, the existing links between irreducible representations and Young diagrams are exposed, and it get to identify each irreducible representationwith an abstract algebraic object called the Specht module.

Full textThis research aims to discover the representations of cancer in a group of young adults who have been diagnosed with this disease, collecting contributions from two types of instruments: the interview and the associative network. For this purpose, we evaluated30 youths between 18 and 25 years (M = 20.93, SD = 2.43) who were being treated atInstitutoNacional de EnfermedadesNeoplásicas (INEN). Various associations related to cancer are appreciated, both positive and negative, which seems to be related to previous experiences with the disease and linked to the stage of development of participants. In addition, we find that the associative network is an interesting tool when evaluating representations by the content evoked and themode of approachingthis disease.

Full textRepresentations of attachment in drug dependent male adults: This investigation describes the mental representations of attachment of a group of 28 male adults recovering from drug dependence. Participants ages fluctuate between 23 and 59 years (M=36; DS=10.2). All participantsive in the city of Lima, 64% has received college education and 36% has received high school education. For these purposes, we used the self-report questionnaire of attachment representations for adults “CaMir”. Two contrast medias resulted from the CaMir scales: the first one was carried out with a group of apparently normal individuals and the second one, using as reference the ideal score for the secure attachment prototype. In the first contrast, significant differences were found within all the CaMir scales, whereas in the second contrast, significant differences were also found, but not in scales B (family awareness) and K (memory block). In general, scales related to the autonomous attachment prototype were comparatively lower, and the scales related to the preoccupied prototype, dismissing prototype, non-result prototype and to the family structure, were higher.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to describe and understand representations from psychoanalysis that two boys and a girl, 6, 8 and 9 years respectively, have their pets, from understanding them, describe the link. To meet these objectives we used a qualitative methodology through a case study, using the following techniques of data collection: data sheet, participant observation, graphical tools and semi-structured interview. The results show the existence of common representations of pet among the three children, namely: the pet as a constant companion, and another which give and receive affection which, as another which provide care, and as another potentially aggressive. In addition, representations were unique in each child, such as the pet as a one on which to project sexual curiosities, or another interest that is related, among others. These representations allowed for an approach to link each child with your pet, observed in all cases a clear influence of family relationships on it, without being determined. Finally, we observed in the three children the experience of solitude in a strong family environment that could be associated with establishing a bond with their pets.

Full textThe present qualitative study examines the representations of autism spectrum disorder in eight parents of children diagnosed with autism, from a special education school in Lima. Elaborating on the representation of autism and its etiology, the representation of the difficulties of autism, the representation of the autistic child, and the representation of the future of the autistic child. Our research suggests that there would be a predominant form of representing autism as a malfunction that generates solipsism, difficulties and challenges, and would predominate an internal attribution of the etiology. The difficulties of autism perceived by the parents, would be represented as challenges and time demands. The autistic child would be represented as a loved one but with an abnormal condition that is rejected, intertwining feelings of love and pride with frustration, guilt, fear, and other negatives emotions. Parents would go through an adaptation process from the initial expectations of an ideal child to the new conditions of a child with autism. Parents would represent the future of their autistic children as uncertain, intertwining moderate optimism with fear and anxiety, in particular the time in which they no longer will be able to take care of their autistic children.

Full textBeing woman and victim is an ordinary binomial in Spain when discussing domestic violence. The seriousness of the abuse suffered by women at the hands of their male partners has turned the former into an object of analysis in the field of social problems. Men as victims of abuse by their partners, on the other hand, is quite out of the ordinary, it defies socially accepted norms. The invisibility of female-inflicted abuse on males is not only a consequence of its affecting the most intimate area of a person's life, but also to the social and cultural connotations that weigh upon the victims of this type of abuse. Using a series of in-depth interviews with heterosexual men who claim to have been physically or psychologically abused by their wives/partners I analyse how they cope with the invisibility of the phenomenon they are experiencing, and their inability to discuss their situation openly because of the public’s denial of their condition of victims. I also discuss the strategies these men use to legitimise their situation and the way in which abused men redefine the hegemonic discourse on gender. In fact this thesis lies on the parametres of the sociology of gender and sociology of deviation and social control. The present study is located in Spain, where honour is conceived as inextricably linked to manhood and social prominence. The figure of the “abused man” can offer some insights into the management of male identity. This is because the gender variable has emerged as part of the identity management of these men, as it forces them to rethink the implications of hegemonic masculinity in its immediate context. The sociocultural environment does not support men who confess to have been assaulted by their female partners. The Spanish case is interesting not only for the null production of academic studies on the problem of the “male victim”, but also because Spain lingers in a hardcore hegemonic ideal of masculinity that impedes the social acceptance of victimized males. In this thesis, I analyse the strategies used by abused Spanish men to adapt to their new social context and construct a new masculine identity after being abused by their female partners and having disclosed their abuse publically. The very exceptionality of their situation undermines these men’s ability to make it public. Their inability to disclose the abuse is determined by its social and academic invisibility, since it rarely makes the news, and if it does it is only to mark its exceptionality; the shame experienced by the victims of this type of violence, who feel that they fall short of the myths of power and control traditionally associated to masculinity; and the victims' need to overcome their fear of jests and ridicule when sharing their experience. Being “on the other side” of Intimate Partner Violence, these men need to redefine hegemonic gender discourse to place themselves (or not) in the frame of “gender violence”. Abused males need to (re)negotiate the condition of vulnerability that is inherent to the social and institutional status of “victim” in the world of violence within a relationship.

Full textThe idea behind this thesis is that representation in representative democracy takes the form of a system of representation. A system of representation is an aggregate of differentiated and interdependent representative actors who are authorized jointly by the people to represent them at different levels. These are the singular, plural, and systemic levels of representation. Normatively speaking, I suggest a systemic approach that would add normative criteria, in addition to the relational criteria we are used to relying on (e.g. authorization, mandate, responsiveness, congruence, communication, and accountability), in order to judge existing and potential actors. I also consider the criteria to be met by the representative system as a whole.

Full textThe key aim of the thesis was to identify the social representations of family that have millennials between 20 y 30 years old and specifically, to inquire whether there were differences associated with the sex and familiar situation of the participants. In order to accomplish this, 15 interviews were made to persons between this age ranges, whom had o have been studying in university, that were singles and haven’t have kids. Was found that their social representation of family was still under the influence of traditional believes or ideologies, been the image associated to this social object a group of people that gives support, share and love each other. But, besides this bond, there was a strong reference to the nuclear family, understood as mother, father and sons, considering this the ideal one and even better than other types. Also, it included an idea as the one proposed in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, conceiving the family inside a society, been it influenced and influence, because it was the responsible of providing new members and educating them. In addition, stand out that even they considered that the roles for men and women should be the same; they keep some gender stereotypes, as the referred to the woman as the caring one. Finally, it was proved that this representation determined the opinions and evaluations made about diverse scenarios associated to family.

Full textThis research aims to identify the association between attachment representations and social competence on children institutionalize in three institutions. In addition, this research strives to describe the characteristics that those constructs have in the mentioned group. In order to achieve this, 30 children with ages between 36 and 61 months old (M = 48.17, DE = 8.82), were assessed using the Attachment Story Completion Task (Bretherton, Ridgeway y Cassidy, 1990) for the attachment representations. In addition, two caregivers per children, with ages between 35 and 52 years old (M = 43. 08; DE = 5. 55), report the social competence of the children through the Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Scale- SCBE (LaFrieniere y Dumas, 1996). Relations between the attachment representations and the social competence were not found. Although, according to their institution of origin, a positive relationship was found between attachment representations and social competence. Regarding the attachment representations, low scores of security and a relation with the caregiver’s age were found. In addition, a positive significant relation was found between the internalizing problems and the age of entrance to the institution. On the other hand, it was found that girls had a greater social competence than boys. These results show the need to carry forward research of the relation between both concepts and the variables that can influence it in different contexts.

Full textThis doctoral thesis aimed at answering the questions arising when illness, Multiple Sclerosis in our case, reaches patients in their most productive years, at the point when they start to plan their future and make projects for the time to come, therefore forcing them to change the course of their lives. These persons' feelings and experiences, considered from a qualitative approach, have enabled us to discover, understand and interpret the meanings of their condition through the expression of the sufferers themselves about their personal and social problems and the illness itself, as seen from the anthropological point of view, where there operates the sociocultural construction and the individual's perception of that process. This is the 'emic' perspective of the illness. The main objectives of this research were: 1. To analyse the patient's living experience in the face of the illness from an anthropological point of view 2. To enquire into the sociocultural adaptations undergone by the patient facing Multiple Sclerosis 3. To determine which symbolic references affect the illness processes. The theoretical framework was built round the concepts of illness, social representations, beliefs, experiences and pain; the emotions arising from the process of becoming ill and the search for meaning in the presence of suffering. The study was approached from a qualitative perspective. The information was collected from an open, semi-structured interview, recorded by audio and literal transcription. The data analysis was divided into three different blocks intended to achieve the aims sought. The group studied was formed by patients diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) who were under inmunomodulatory treatment of the illness process, and regularly visited the MS Unit (Unidad de Esclerosis Múltiple) at Virgen de la Arrixaca Clinical University Hospital (Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca) in Murcia. The total number of participants was 23. The main conclusions were: 1. The initial experience is related to lack of understanding, the socially negative representation of the illness, is associated to disability, social segregation, the need for assistance and the wheelchair. 2. They form an idea of the illness from the perspective of fear and uncertainty. 3. Information about the illness and its development helps to change the beliefs generated by its social representation. 4. The period of adaptation to the condition is like a rite of passage in which the liminal face is the process of learning how to live with the illness. Contact with other patients in the same situation builds affective relationships with a high symbolic value, which springs from the communal context of the liminal face and which lasts through time. 5. The family of the sufferer is affected by the alteration of the cultural patterns assigned. 6. A higher academic level enables patients to stay active for a longer time in their work places. 7. The feelings they express as a symbolic reference of their discomfort, include guilt, shame, a feeling of loss, unhappiness and the perplexity reflected by the sentence: 'why does it happen to me?' There are also feelings of happiness and joy. 8. The search for information, the acceptance of the illness by the family and the carrying out of the treatment become positive references for dealing with the illness. 9. Religious beliefs operate as giving support; they express the traditional values and promote changes in the suffering processes. 10. The ideal system is that which helps the patient to feel optimistic, be realistic and appreciate small achievements.

This research analyzes the representation of male homosexuality in Mexican cinema produced in the first two decades of the 21st century to account for the discourses built there on four aspects: sexual relations, couple relationships, acceptance / rejection (homophobia) and visibility / concealment (closet). From a sociocultural theoretical perspective, considering the context in which homosexuality is found in Mexico, the cinema of this theme made in the 20th century and following a method of cinematographic analysis, 17 fiction feature films have been studied in whose central plot is found male homosexuality. In the corpus it is observed that sexual relations between men are linked to both erotic and affective aspects, far from a feeling of guilt and / or dissatisfaction; couple relationships present various emotions and feelings in their representation, which gives them complexity and depth, thus validating the existence of love between men, while being strongly associated with a heteronormative scheme according to which they are assimilated or normalized; homophobia is shown as a reaction to a social mandate that is performed without much conviction, the speech mainly advocates acceptance and respect, questioning and ridiculing prejudices and placing internalized homophobia as a serious problem for homosexual people, their personal and social development; finally, the phenomenon of the closet in its filmic representation shows that the problem is not only dissident sexual orientation but also its visibility, placing the concealment as an expression of homophobia but a discourse against is presented that claims pride and that refuses to go back into the dark.

Full textAbstract: The starting point of this investigation is the interest in describing and analyzing the representations and practices of persons with alcohol problems and the therapists in a Attention Center for Drug-Dependants in a medium size city of Catalunya. Our goal centers on analyzing how people with alcohol problems, identify, name and interpret the alcohol related illness and how they carry out their health care practices according to different medical models. To this end, the experiences of 22 persons with alcohol problems have been gathered, 14 men and 8 women, and of 16 professionals (physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, intercultural mediators) working at said center. The ethnographic work has allowed us to gather the narratives of the users as well as of the therapists with regard to the illness and its treatments; also with regard to the evolution and perspectives of the Attention Center for Drug-Dependants from the therapist point of view as social actors. The method has been ethnography centered on point of view of the actor, privileging the actors, during one year, time shared with persons with alcohol problems, as well as with the therapists, in order to grasp how they deal with the illness and the treatment, circumscribed to a biomedical field and also away from it. Profound interviews and participating observations were used as methodological techniques. With regard to the problem considered within the complex field of drug-dependency, according to the results of the analysis we can see the importance that the hegemonic biomedical discourse has on its subjectivities and perceptions. With regard to persons with alcohol problems, the main contribution has been to gather their experiences and life-stories of alcohol related illness, and the way it has affected their lives, the treatments and health attention practices and the formulation of short, medium and long range projects with the intention of reaching abstinence or a moderate consumption of alcohol. One of the most outstanding aspects of the therapist is the importance to be listened instead of being the one who has to listen. Some professionals point out that the “Margination” of the subjects under their care, impregnates them. They also express that after the emergency, and the impact of the drug problematic in the 80´, the same has been considered to be banal, and that currently some projects focused on certain areas are receiving less attention. Several points of coincidence and homogeneity have been found among the discourse of the therapists with regard to their representations and approaches in the context of the institution for which they work, but there are also certain nuance that allows us to speak of differences, Beyond the heterogeneities and the homogeneities in the discourses and practices, an integrative and dialogical will emergences that imposes a multi-dimensional focus to analyze drug consumption and its repercussions on public health in the beginning of the XXI century.

Full textThe aim of this study is to compare the content of cancer representations in young adults aged between 18 and 25 years, with and without disease. To this end, 70 young adults (30 cancer patients and 40 healthy non- patients) were evaluated with the Associative Network tool. A quantitative measurement of attitudinal components of representations (polarity index and neutrality) and a qualitive measurement through semantic analysis of evoked contents were performed with this tool. In general, it was found that the representations of cancer are associated with negative emotional reactions, death, personal resources and social support during the disease process; contents that were differing in frequency according to the group. In addition, significant differences between the two groups were found in the contents related to death, positive reactions to social support and physical impact of cancer. Also, the polarity index showed that young adults without cancer had a more negative attitude towards this disease; however, cancer patients showed a balance between a positive and negative attitude. The results were discussed from a structural approach to the representations.

Full textThe present investigation seeks to describe the mental representations of paternity in first couples during pregnancy. We worked using a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological design with 4 heterosexual married couples between 28 and 38 years old that had between 3 and 8 months of pregnancy of their first child. The instrument used was a semi-structured individual interview with which the information could be collected. The results showed that for the participants the construction of the mental representations of paternity happen in a mental space, since the baby has not been born yet, they have not lived the experience in itself, so it is a representation under construction. Thus, within the discourse, three main axes emerge for both men and women, where speaking of paternity evokes the history of paternity and of the couple, which includes planning. In addition, the meaning that this first child acquires and the meaning of pregnancy from the vision of mens and women. Finally, mental representations include the roles that men believe they should assume as future fathers and the roles that women believe their husbands should assume as future fathers.

This thesis reviews the regulations, the theoretical and ideological assumptions, material and organizational limitations of the CDIAT and establishes the effects that certain social constructions have on professional practice as well as the consequences that can be derived from it. To do so, the different definitions of the term social family that the different professionals of the interdisciplinary teams of the CDIAT use, the diagnostic instruments they handle for the social diagnosis, the type of operation of the services and the role that social representations play in all this are analyzed. The research is approached from a qualitative perspective based on a continuous over 9-year ethnography gathering data through participant observation in interdisciplinary meetings as well as supervision sessions in four CDIATs in Catalonia and completed with 43 semi-structured interviews with professionals of Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Neuropediatrics, Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Pedagogy as key informants. Understanding the social diagnosis as a comparison between two situations (Scaron & Genisans, 1985; Ander-Egg, 1985), the one explored through a diagnostic process and the given situation that serves as an ideal model, the research confirms that the first situation is mostly reduced to the study of the mother and child interaction and that the second situation is not agreed by the early care professionals, thus making sterile any comparison between them. This thesis entails the importance of identifying which CDIAT professionals hold the mental image of social families, it brings us closer to how these professionals see the social families and finally it raises a conceptualization of the ideal family model in a situation of protection and exposes a support instrument for social diagnosis in early care encourage for the change of significance of the social representations associated with the social family.

Full textIn the era of global access to information, migratory displacement continues to be viewed as an unambiguous and a level phenomenon. Usually, when speaking of women and their reasons for their migratory plans, a reductionist discourse is used that ends up simplifying their plural realities and limits the reasons for their migratory plans to push factors such as internal conflicts or merely following their husbands desire to emigrate. The objective of this research study is to access the migratory polyhedron: the female immigrants of Sub-Saharan countries that reside in Spain, and the challenges that they face from a linguistic and cultural point of view. The focus is on women in particular, because it is precisely this particular group that least attends formal language classes. Sub-Saharan women’s invisibility in attending formal classes is even greater than other African female immigrant groups like the Magrebi. As a point of departure, this research will study and describe the daily realities of these women based on their itineraries and the social networks that have been created without forgetting their identity. We will focus on their own symbolic representations, their own learning processes and this immigrant group’s relationship with the host society and how their identity is thus co-constructed and how it evolves in this new destination. Within this co-construction, this study also attempts to understand the linguistic-cultural strategies that generate in distinct contexts and how they become the driving force in their own informal learning. In the long term, the findings of this research study will help reach out to this particular group of women instead of isolating them from the classroom. This study attempts to truly understand the Other.

Full textResearch on national identity and ethnicity show that, statistically, the degree of identification with the social category of mestizo is associated with identification with the social category of Peruvian. However, at a discursive level, it is a category that has no clear definition or delimitation. Thus, by a qualitative methodology approach, this work explores the social representations of mestizaje, and mestizo, in relation to the construction of national identity. Twenty interviews were conducted with undergraduate students and graduates of university degrees, with ages between 22 and 26 years old, forming two groups: Social science careers and other careers. Overall, it was found that the mestizo and mestizaje are terms that refer to racial and cultural mix, and their association with diversity makes them not have a clear delimitation in the definition. Then, identification with the category is based on the motivations of self-esteem and membership in a social group. It is also recognized that the mestizo is part of the social category of Peruvian. However, its lack of use in current social dynamics generates attitudes of indifference, and subtracts relevance in the current definition of national identity. Thus, mestizaje is recognized as a past identity discourse. Nowadays, it is the discourse of entrepreneurship which is current. On the other hand, greater complexity is evident in the speech of the group with education in Social Sciences. Finally, it is recognized that the redefinition of mestizaje in its cultural dimension could help generate a cohesive identity based on respect for diversity.

Full textThis study aims to identify (1) the association between maternal sensitivity and attachment representations and (2) the association between maternal sensitivity and ideal maternal sensitivity in adolescent mothers. In addition, this research strives to describe the characteristics that those constructs have in the aforementioned group. In order to achieve this, 12 adolescent mothers, aged between 16 and 19 years old (M = 17.25, DE = 3.25), and their babies, aged between 6 and 18 months (M = 10.25, DE = 3.52), were assessed using the Maternal Behaviour Q-Set (Pederson, Morán y Bento, 1999) and the Maternal Attachment Scripts (Waters y Rodrigues-Doolabh, 2006). As for sensitivity, two groups were found: mothers with high sensitivity and mother with low sensitivity. This study found an association with marginal significance between narratives of mother-infant relationships and narratives about adult-adult relationships. Ideal sensitivity was found similar to universal criterion and an association with marginal significance was found between it and socioeconomic status. Regarding the general objectives, no significant associations were found. However, a positive association with marginal significance was found between the real and ideal sensitivity in the group of mothers with greater sensitivity; meanwhile, in the group of mothers with lower sensitivity a negative and high, but not significant, correlation was found. These results highlight the need to carry forward research to ascertain the mediators in these relations and how those mediators work.

Full textThis research aims to explore the relationship between attachment representations and emotion regulation in school children with ADHD. To achieve this purpose, 20 children with ADHD between 6 and 12 years old (M = 7.84, SD = 1.61) who attend a center of therapeutic development participated in the study. As well, we count with the collaboration of the caregivers, whose age oscillate between 28 and 46 (M = 37.88, SD = 4.40) for the mother, and between 32 and 58 (M = 40.88, SD = 6.50) for the father. The children complete the Attachment Style Classification Questionnaire (ASCQ) and the caregivers fill out the Emotion Regulation Cheklist (ERC). The results reflect that the children reveal a middle level of ambivalent attachment, demonstrating certain fear of not being accepted by other kids, although an interest for being in constant interaction with them. Additionally, the caregivers perceive that their children have an appropriate level of emotion regulation, being able to regulate their positive emotions; however, they consider the presence of difficulties when the children have to regulate the expression of negative emotions. Although we didn´t find a relationship between both constructs, this research looks forward to be the commence of future studies, in order to obtain more information of this variables.
