Chromated copper arsenate (CCA), type C, was largely used as a wood preservative due to its exceptional fungicidal and insecticidal properties. Although this treatment was prohibited for residential purposes in Canada and in the United-States of America, concerns about CCA-treated wood focus on the possible threat on human health and the contamination of the environment, through the leaching of metals from existing structures. The objectives of this thesis are (1) to assess the effects of metals leached from CCA- and ACQ-treated wood on the survival, the growth and the reproductive succ

Phenotypic plasticity plays an important role in organisms’ adaptability to environmental change such as global warming caused by greenhouse-gas emissions. One plastic response to increased temperatures is for organisms to shift their phenology. Despite predictions and extended usage via consumer products and industry, the understanding of the potential impact of these materials on the environment is virtually absent. The main aim of this thesis is to understand how a selected group of nanomaterials (metal based particles) may impact soil invertebrates, with special focus on the mechanisms of response. Abstract:
Sexual reproduction is an important mechanism shaping plant community composition that will likely be affected by unprecedented rates of climate change in Canada’s North. To anticipate potential changes in plant communities, I aim to understand how changing environmental conditions affect the processes of seed production and seedling emergence, and determine the overall impacts on the reproductive potential of alpine tundra vegetation in Yukon, Canada. I tested the effect of soil warming and nitrogen addition treatments on the timing and success of sexual reproduction of the six tundra species

Using earthworm as a biological indicator could provide the information of the heavy metal bioavailability, however, few research had been done in Taiwan. The OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) earthworm toxicity test was used in this study. The earthworm (Eisenia fetida) was incubated in artificial soils with a series of the concentrations of cadmium(Cd), zinc(Zn), copper(Cu), chromium (Cr3+) and nickel(Ni). Just over two decades have passed from the synthesis of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) to their mass production. Despite this exponential growth in terms of development, application and market acceptance of ENPs, nano(eco)toxicological knowledge of potential risks have not kept the same pace. This was due, among other factors, to the vast variability of nanomaterials (NMs) and their possible combinations with the surrounding media. Certain that NMs demand will continue to increase, (eco)toxicological research should focus on the understanding of the mechanisms of novel materials and their pot

Anthropogenic pollutants are continuously released into the environment, which can result in long term exposure to soil organisms. Currently, standard guidelines focus on the assessment of effects to only one life stage, mostly juveniles, during a fixed exposure time. Additionally, these methods evaluate harmful effects of compounds to e.g. organism’s survival, reproduction and avoidance. Results obtained when testing these endpoints, even when combined, can under-/over-estimate potential damage to soil fauna.

Despite its long tradition in our country, livestock grazing almost disappeared from Czech landscape. This form of land use has winded down in the middle of 20th century, when compulsory co-operative farming was introduced. Decrease of pasturage is especially visible on fragmented areas of steep slopes and in dry places. These areas are often highly valuable and protected for its nature richness. When a grazing management is introduced, its effects on plant species communities are not clear. Also the exact mechanisms of vegetation changes caused by grazing are often unknown.
