Abstract:
This thesis is based on the following fact : the essential part that the private militia may have played throughout the history of the first austrian republic, particularly in the late twenties. In the first place, it concentrates on studying the origin of the armed groups (heimwehren and republikanischer schutzbund), in the confused context of the defeat in november 1918 and of the dismanting of the double monarchy, their structures, their armament etc. , as well as the way they were used by the two opposite political sides. The second part analyses the confrontation which arises after the big fire at the law courts in july 1927. From then on, together woth the parties of the right-wing parliament, the anti-republican militia acts more and more openly in the history of the country. The result is a countless number of divisions on the "anti-marxist" side which make the heimwehren quickly veer towards a fascist mouvement. The third part describes the evolution towards the civil war of february 1934, and tries to unterstand how and why the militia - both left-wing and right-wing - was set aside under the conditions of the authoritative dictatorship. Finally, this thesis endeavours to find some answers to a question that

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the use of cross-border visits and motifs in political commemorations and rallies. In particular, it looks at the relationship between the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold and the Republikanischer Schutzbund. Highlighting the ability of republican großdeutsch nationalism to mobilize popular support, thousands of members of the two associations traveled across the border to attend pro-republican festivities, where they received an enthusiastic reception from local populations. Yet this cross-border relationship was not without problems. The Austrian socialists' revolutionary rhetoric and attacks on their Catholic political opponents at home stirred tensions between the two republican organizations. These disagreements, however, did not simply originate within the republican coalition. Conservatives and the radical right in both states endeavored to break up the republican alliance. The political right's effort to do so was a sign of the importance of the cross-border republican partnership to the defense of democracy.
