Abstract:

Abstract:
Some physical aspects related to the occurrence of nocturnal instability-inducing intense peaks in wind speed (here abbreviated by PV.) in the tropical atmosphere above forest were investigated. Such phenomena cause strong variations in turbulent signals, occurrence of strong turbulence regimes, and significant increases in scalar fluxes. Was found that these events that occur during strong turbulence regimes can be preceded and succeeded by low frequency oscillations in environmental variables and that the significant increase in scalar fluxes observed is associated with the existence of a relative maximum wind speed value (). Procedures are applied to the data used here to enable the construction of phase space diagrams in order to better analyze the increase in amplitude of low frequency oscillations observed before PV outbreak, as well as the decrease in amplitude after PV. The aforementioned phase diagrams are used to obtain repulsor and attractor limit cycles, which respectively precede and succeed the peaks in wind speed. Weather radar images are also used to further investigate the studied atmospheric phenomenon.

Abstract:
In this article, we use a discrete system to study the opinion dynamics regarding the electoral preferences of a nontendentious group of agents. To measure the level of preference, a continuous opinion space is used, in which the preference (opinion) can evolve from any political option, to any other; for a regime of three parties, a circle is the convenient space. To model a nonbiased society, new agents are considered. Besides their opinion, they have a new attribute: an individual iterative monoparametric map that imitates a process of internal reflection, allowing them to update their opinion in their own way. These iterative maps introduce six fixed points on the opinion space; the points’ stability depends on the sign of the parameter. When the latter is positive, three attractors are identified with political options, while the repulsors are identified with the antioptions (preferences diametrically opposed to each political choice). In this new model, pairs of agents interact only if their respective opinions are alike; a positive number called confidence bound is introduced with this purpose; if opinions are similar, they update their opinion considering each other’s opinion, while if they are not alike, each agent updates her opinion considering only her individual map. In addition, agents give a certain level of trust (weight) to other agent’s opinions; this results in a positive stochastic matrix of weights which models the social network. The model can be reduced to a pair of coupled nonlinear difference equations, making extracting analytical results possible: a theorem on the conditions governing the existence of consensus in this new artificial society. Some numerical simulations are provided, exemplifying the analytical results.

Abstract:
The metrics of general relativity generally fall into two categories: those which are solutions of the Einstein equations for a given source energy-momentum tensor and the “reverse engineered” metrics—metrics bespoke for a certain purpose. Their energy-momentum tensors are then calculated by inserting these into the Einstein equations. This latter approach has found frequent use when confronted with creative input from fiction, wormholes and warp drives being the most famous examples. In this paper, we again take inspiration from fiction and see what general relativity can tell us about the possibility of a gravitationally induced tractor beam. We base our construction on warp drives and show how versatile this ansatz alone proves to be. Not only can we easily find tractor beams (attracting objects), but repulsor/pressor beams are just as attainable, and a generalization to “stressor” beams is seen to present itself quite naturally. We show that all of these metrics would violate various energy conditions. This provides an opportunity to ruminate on the meaning of energy conditions as such and what we can learn about whether an arbitrarily advanced civilization might have access to such beams.

Abstract:
The goal of this work is the application of the approach based on attractors dynamics to the motion control of a semi-autonomous aerostatic air vehicle. The designed control architecture is fully formalized as a non-linear dynamical system. This was first validated through computational simulations. In order to do so, a simulator built with Matlab Simulink was used. In a latter stage a new simulator was built using C + + and OpenGL. In the second simulator, the Simulink space state model of the airship was replaced by differential equations solved with a fourth order Runge-Kuta method. The last step was the physical implementation of the control architecture on a real airship. To made this possible, an interface was designed and built so we could communicate with the airship thrusters using the computer. Sensory information comes from a CMOS camera in the airship gondola. Image processing gives us direction, distance and the altitude diference at which targets and obstacles lie relatively to the airship’s frontal direction. This information is then used to generate the behavioral dynamics which will be responsible for the actuation of the thrusters.

Abstract:
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Information Systems and Technologies Management
Genetic Algorithms are bio-inspired metaheuristics that solve optimization problems; they are evolutionary algorithms that mimic the biological processes of evolution and natural selection to evolve solutions to a given problem. Genetic programming consists of the creation of programs employing GAs to evolve them. In both GA and GP, the algorithm starts with a random solution to a problem that is improved generation after generation building it on the positive traits of the previous generation and discarding traits that do not improve the solution. Repulsors consist of giving the learning algorithm some prior knowledge on the outcome of previous generations on a test set, to try to replace solutions that performed poorly on the data set with better ones. This thesis aims to test and document if the use of repulsors can change the behavior of GP, improve its learning rate and reduce overfitting thus also improving the generalization abilities? Overfitting is a problem in many machine learning algorithms, genetic programming (GP) is also affected by it, one of the objectives of this dissertation is to assess if overfitting can be reduced by using knowledge on the prior behavior of programs generated by GP on a validation data set, and, applying this knowledge to change the selection phase penalizing solutions similar to those that generalized poorly before. These poorly performing solutions will be called repulsors and are the main topic of this dissertation. We developed a program that implemented standard and repulsor based genetic programming. The program was then executed several times over some datasets and collect the results. Finally, the results were compared, and conclusions were taken. The results indicate that the use of repulsors produces better results on the training set and in the test set, this leads us to conclude that the use of repulsors has a positive effect on the performance of GP. The results indicate that the use of repulsors does indeed produce better results. On the training phase, seven out of the nine datasets showed improved algorithm performance when learning. In the test sets, the algorithm presented better generalization ability on five out of nine datasets. Studies could be extended to the use of multi-objective optimization when selecting individuals, and the extension of the repulsor list to other (independent) runs with the same parameters and dataset.
