Abstract:
We consider two multiclass discriminatory process sharing (DPS)-like time-shared M/G/1 queuing systems in which the weight assigned to a customer is a function of its class as well as (1) the attained service of the customer in the first system and (2) the residual processing time of the customer in the second system. We study the asymptotic slowdown, the ratio of expected sojourn time to the service requirement, of customers with very large service requirements. We also provide various results dealing with ordering of conditional mean sojourn times of any two given classes. We also show that

Abstract:
Real-time systems are characterised by the critical nature of their missions, and the demanding environment with which they interact. Real-time systems are used for dedicated applications. Every application is the subject of special requirements enforced by the customer. Considering the vital role that these systems play, it is imperative that a systematic approach be adopted in modelling their unique requirements. In this thesis I propose such a treatment. Real-time systems are time critical. Temporal requirements are the timing restrictions imposed by the application environment. Previous st

The environment in which a software system operates is as important to the correct operation of the system as the software itself. Most software development involves making assumptions about the environment in which the resulting system will operate. These assumptions may cease to be valid if the environment changes, causing the system to fail to operate correctly. One solution to this problem is to use run-time requirements monitoring to deter mine, as a system operates, whether it is satisfying the requirements specified for it and to take action to rectify these problems. Low response time is an important factor for any interactive system. However, web-based applications suffer sometimes from bad response times. This fact is not always important but for services depending on a  high degree of interactivity it can be severe. The research approach is deductive based on a single-case study and using qualitative method. The case system is a web-based system that supports an experimental technique called W

This thesis explores the construction, enrichment and use of requirements models for adaptive systems. This thesis proposes the enrichment of adaptive systems' requirements models with additional tracing information, preserving the rationale behind configuration decisions. The preserved rationale can be utilised at design time, allowing decisions to be re-taken in the context of new or changed information and allowing for the identification of areas of uncertainty in understanding. The preserved rationale can also be used by a system itself, at run time, allowing it to adapt its behaviour to c

In the US, workers must satisfy two requirements to receive unemployment insurance (UI): a tenure requirement of a minimum work spell and a monetary requirement of past minimum earnings. Using discontinuity of UI rules at state borders, we find that the monetary requirement decreases the number of employers and the share of part-time workers, while the tenure requirement has the opposite effect. In a quantitative model, the monetary requirement induces workers to stay longer in unemployment because low-paying jobs are not covered by UI. Since it mitigates moral hazard, the optimal UI design ha
