Abstract:
Regarding the accelerated innovation in the 21st century, the article suggests modifying the spatial principles of Research Institutes as isolated institutions. The 21st century Research Institute should reflect the increasing levels of openness and security in modern information exchange methods. Thus, the Institute reveals invisible information processes in the physical urban environment, becoming the urban centre of innovation, a new workplace and leisure centre, as well as a catalyst for enhancing the city’s sustainability. The article analyses the historical paradigm of effective methods for introducing innovation to the urban environment, as well as modern socio-economic needs of innovative research institutes in the city. As a result, a unique organizational structure and functional programme of a new Research Institute are suggested. The Institute directly participates in enhancing the urban environment and forming a new lifestyle of the city dwellers. New spatial principles of such buildings are also proposed, updating the architectural typology of Research Institutes in the 21st century. Due to the increased interaction with the urban environment, the Research Institute and the city are mutually transformed. This contributes both to increasing the Institute’s efficiency and raising the city’s economic potential and life quality.

Abstract:
A survey of the mycorrhizal status of plants growing in the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa was undertaken to assess the range of mycorrhizal types and their dominance in species characteristic of this region. Records were obtained by examining the root systems of plants growing in three Cape lowland vegetation types, viz. West Coast Strandveld, West Coast Renosterveld and Sand Plain Lowland Fynbos for mycorrhizas, as well as by collating literature records of mycorrhizas on plants growing in the region. The mycorrhizal status of 332 species is listed, of which 251 species are new records. Members of all the important families in this region have been examined. Mycorrhizal status appears to be associated mainly with taxonomic position of the species. Extrapolating from these results, we conclude that 62% of the flora of the Cape Floristic Region form vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizas, 23% have no mycorrhizas, 8% are ericoid mycorrhizal, 2% form orchid mycorrhizas, whereas the mycorrhizal status of 4% of the flora is unknown. There were no indigenous ectomycor- rhizal species. The proportion of non-mycorrhizal species is high compared to other ecosystems. In particular, the lack of mycorrhizas in several important perennial families in the Cape Floristic Region is unusual. The diversity of nutrient acquiring adaptations, including the range of mycorrhizas and cluster roots in some non-mycorrhizal families, may promote coexistence of plants in this species-rich region.

Abstract:
This article addresses the significant role multicultural social work institutes can play in the development of social work practice. Such an institute can be a powerful source for researching, evaluating, and expanding social work knowledge and practice, educating and training human service professionals, analyzing and disseminating information critical to policy and professional development, and initiating and participating in change processes that reflect heightened awareness of and appreciation for diversity. The case of San Francisco State University's Institute for Multicultural Research and Social Work Practice is used to illustrate how each of the above-mentioned points were achieved. This article traces the three major phases the institute went through during its first 7 years of history: initiation and establishment, development, and maintenance and growth. It reveals that to be successful, institutes must engage in strategic planning and continuously evolve and change to meet new challenges and developments.

Abstract:
Purpose Lean thinking (LT) has been implemented in various manufacturing and service sectors. But, only a few published research articles have developed a framework describing the procedure for implementing LT in an educational institute. The purpose of this paper is to develop and demonstrate a framework that can provide a structured procedure for the implementation of LT in an educational institute. Design/methodology/approach Various LT tools and techniques applicable in educational institute were identified by reviewing the relevant literature. By adopting an action research methodology (ARM) for a time period of 28 months, the processes in a case institute were studied; wastes in the process were identified and various solutions were proposed and implemented. Findings A comparison of the performance measures before (Batch 1) and after (Batch 2) implementation of solutions provided interesting insights into the effectiveness of LT. In both the batches, absenteeism in the class was found to increase across the terms. But the magnitude of increase was lesser in Batch 2. Results also showed that the number of unfilled seats (poor utilization) in an elective course in the second year of the program drastically reduced in Batch 2. Finally, a framework that can guide LT implementation in educational institutes was proposed. Research limitations/implications The current study describes only the initial stages of implementation in an educational institute. Hence, some of the benefits discussed are expected in the long run which can be assessed by carrying out a longitudinal study. Future study can attempt to empirically validate the proposed framework in multiple educational institutes and theoretically explain the reasons behind the results obtained. Practical implications ARM can be used as a tool by practitioners to study the behavioral aspects of employees of educational institutes toward LT implementation. The proposed framework and its demonstration can assist employees in educational institutes to implement LT. Positive results obtained in this study can further motivate the educational institutes to consider LT as a potential tool for improving the processes. Originality/value This is the first study to develop and validate a framework for structured implementation of LT in the processes of an educational institute. The study is also unique in empirically capturing the impact of LT implementation of an educational institute by analyzing the archived data.

AbstractThe model concept, as presented in this paper, is an original solution created by the author, and can be used as a proposal to build an innovative mechanism to increase the effectiveness of programming and implementation of the development policy, and improve the quality of functioning of a building research institute. The development management system included in this model is a set of actions targeting at the effective use of human and tangible resources, undertaken in a coordinated manner and leading to the achievement of previously established objectives. The market activity of building research institutes is directly or indirectly involved in construction projects, which translates into market mechanisms, such as innovation and competitiveness. In addition, it indicates the participation of a building research institute in the engineering of construction projects as a key to entrepreneurship and implementations.

The review is dedicated to activities of Research Institute of Urban History. The main attention turns to directions of the work of the Research Institute: 1. Multifaceted studying of urban history (continuation of individual Institute’s member's studies on various components of the urban past; realization of joint research projects connected with urbanization; organization of conferences and meetings dedicated to urban issues; cooperation with other research institutions and associations involved in studying urban past); 2. Developing a website of the Institute, which should become a platform for communication scholars and the public involved and interested in urban history as well as for publishing articles and archival collections of the Research Institute; 3. Work as editorial board and authors of historical-cultural anthology “Frontiers of the city”. 4. Conducting oral historical research on urban history with the formation of an archive of oral historical narrative (theoretical and practical training for interviewers; preparing and conducting expeditions; systematization, processing the collected materials; preparation of materials for publication); 5. Development and maintenance of the archive of film documents related to urban history (heuristic work in archives; identifying and copying film documents from private collections; participation in creation on the basis of these film documents documentaries and popular science films on the history of cities); 6. Development and maintenance of the depositary of photographs related to the history of “urban space”; 7. Creating in the structure of the Research Institute the Museum of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University, which is a broader context may be considered as a museum of the history of education in an urban area; 8. Public activities aimed at popularization of urban history and at the interaction of researchers with society (organization of exhibitions, competitions, etc.; initiation and implementation of public projects).
