Abstract:
Purpose: The paper is an attempt to enter the discussion in the subject literature on elucidating problems in the non-systemic approach to managing the bank as an organization. The purpose of the paper is to identify the contradictions within which banks are managed, and which are aggravated in contingency situations. Due to the sensitive matter of the services they provide, banks are institutions that require special attention particularly now, when the COVID situation is radically testing management quality. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is the result of a literature review. Findings: The epistemological studies conducted have culminated in a framework of contradictory determinants shaping bank management during fast-paced changes in market conditions. The theoretical construct proposed may be a point of departure for empirical verification and further analytic work on the capacity of banks to reconcile the antinomies identified in the paper. Originality/value: The study makes it possible for managers to fill the knowledge gap with respect to areas and implications of the identified contradictions. Awareness of their existence and, as a result, management that supports processes for responding to a volatile environment is particularly useful in crisis situations. The proposed theoretical concept may be applied to identify antinomies or their lack in other areas of management research for various organization types.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to synthesize existing research on research data management (RDM), academic scholarship and knowledge management and provide a conceptual framework for an institutional research data management support-system (RDMSS) for systems development, managerial and academic use. Design/methodology/approach – Viewing RDMSS from multiple theoretical perspectives, including data management, knowledge management, academic scholarship and the practice-based perspectives of knowledge and knowing, this paper conceptually explores the systems’ elements needed in the development of an institutional RDM service by considering the underlying data discovery and application issues, as well as the nature of academic scholarship and knowledge creation, discovery, application and sharing motivations in a university environment. Findings – The paper provides general criteria for an institutional RDMSS framework. It suggests that RDM in universities is at the very heart of the knowledge life cycle and is a central ingredient to the academic scholarships of discovery, integration, teaching, engagement and application. Research limitations/implications – This is a conceptual exploration and as a result, the research findings may lack generalisability. Researchers are therefore encouraged to further empirically examine the proposed propositions. Originality/value – The broad RDMSS framework presented in this paper can be compared with the actual situation at universities and eventually guide recommendations for adaptations and (re)design of the institutional RDM infrastructure and knowledge discovery services environment. Moreover, this paper will help to address some of the identified underlying scholarship and RDM disciplinary divides and confusion constraining the effective functioning of the modern day university’s RDM and data discovery environment.

Abstract:
This paper provides a bibliometric analysis of the articles in the field of operations research or management science (OR/MS) published in the years 1980–2018 by European researchers. The analysis’s objective is to identify and examine the current state of OR/MS studies in Europe, which publishes about 38% of the papers published worldwide. The analysis was based on the data from the Web of Science (WoS) databases. We found a total of 65,352 papers in 148 different journals in the OR/MS field. The results provide a general picture of the studies, which are classified according to the most influential authors, institutions, papers, and journals. The study revealed that the ratio of OR/MS studies having at least one European author has steadily increased over the decades from 28.27% in the 1980 s to 41.29% in the 2010 s. The analysis also provides citation statistics of the European OR/MS articles. The study concluded that the impact of European publications is less than the impact of U.S. publications. The bibliometric analysis of the studies showed that only a small portion of the countries/regions, institutions, and even authors published a substantial portion of the papers, as indicated by the Pareto rule. The research trends have been identified through an analysis of keyword usage over the years. In keyword analysis, which subcategories are studied together is also identified. In the paper, collaboration among countries and institutions is also identified and depicted by using VOS viewer.

The implications of strategic change for routine diagnostic feedback mechanisms have received less attention. Drawing on interview and archival data from a single case study of an Australian pump manufacturer, we examine the way diagnostic controls are used in the immediate period following strategic change. The changes in diagnostic controls are shown not only to align the organization in a self-regulating way to a new strategic direction, but also to promote learning, co-operation and culture change which are integral to, rather than an outcome of the strategic change process.

Abstract:
In our days, more and more organisations from private to public sectors are pursuing to reach high customer values of satisfaction, loyalty and retention. Following that idea, higher education institutions seek to develop more efficient management styles through the adoption of CRM - Customer Relationship Management strategies. But, as in any sector, to develop a CRM strategy it is important to get someone involved who as a vertical and horizontal view of all the activity of the organisation. That person must be a marketeer because it is one of the only collaborators who understand what CRM is and how to adapt it to the needs of his organisation. According to that, this study discusses the importance of a marketeer in the adoption of a CRM strategy in a Higher Education Institution. To develop this study, the Action Research method was adopted and two action researches were developed for each process (selection and implementation). Besides that, the following work also presents a set of Critical Success Factors which are important for the creation of project. To conclude, through the following work, any University or different type of organisation can learn with this experience and understand what kind of issues and advantages they can find during the adoption of a CRM solution.

Chisholm, Robin Lynn. "Emergency physician documentation quality and cognitive load : comparison of paper charts to electronic physician documentation." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/5809.

Full text
Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Reducing medical error remains in the forefront of healthcare reform. The use of health information technology, specifically the electronic health record (EHR) is one attempt to improve patient safety. The implementation of the EHR in the Emergency Department changes physician workflow, which can have negative, unintended consequences for patient safety. Inaccuracies in clinical documentation can contribute, for example, to medical error during transitions of care. In this quasi-experimental comparison study, we sought to determine whether there is a difference in document quality, error rate, error type, cognitive load and time when Emergency Medicine (EM) residents use paper charts versus the EHR to complete physician documentation of clinical encounters. Simulated patient encounters provided a unique and innovative environment to evaluate EM physician documentation. Analysis focused on examining documentation quality and real-time observation of the simulated encounter. Results demonstrate no change in document quality, no change in cognitive load, and no change in error rate between electronic and paper charts. There was a 46% increase in the time required to complete the charting task when using the EHR. Physician workflow changes from partial documentation during the patient encounter with paper charts to complete documentation after the encounter with electronic charts. Documentation quality overall was poor with an average of 36% of required elements missing which did not improve during residency training. The extra time required for the charting task using the EHR potentially increases patient waiting times as well as clinician dissatisfaction and burnout, yet it has little impact on the quality of physician documentation. Better strategies and support for documentation are needed as providers adopt and use EHR systems to change the practice of medicine.

Naak, Amine. "Papyres : un système de gestion et de recommandation d’articles de recherche." Thèse, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/3270.

Full text
Abstract:
Graduate students and professors (researchers, in general) regularly access, review, and use large amounts of research papers, yet none of the existing tools and solutions provides the wide range of functionalities required to properly manage these resources. Indeed, bibliography management systems manage the references and citations but fail to help researchers in handling and locating resources. On the other hand, research paper recommendation systems and specialized search engines help researchers to locate new resources, but again fail to help researchers in managing the resources. Finally, Enterprise Content Management systems offer the required functionalities to manage resources and knowledge, but are not designed for research literature. Consequently, we suggest a new class of management systems: Research Paper Management and Recommendation System. Through our system Papyres (Naak, Hage, & Aïmeur, 2008, 2009) we illustrate our approach, which combines bibliography functionalities along with recommendation techniques and content management tools, in order to provide a set of functionalities to locate research papers, handle and maintain the bibliographies, and to manage and share knowledge related to the research literature. Additionally, we propose a novel research paper recommendation technique, used within Papyres. Its uniqueness lies in the multicriteria aspect introduced in the process of collaborative filtering, allowing researchers to indicate their interest in specific parts of articles. Moreover, we suggest test and compare several approaches to determine the neighbourhood in the Multicriteria Collaborative Filtering process, such as to increase the accuracy of the recommendation. Finally, we report on the implementation and validation of Papyres.

Van, der Linde Monique. "Environmental study/management/science orientated papers, published by South African geographers during the period 1996-2001." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/1987.

Full text
Abstract:
M.A.
Geography as a discipline has undergone many different metamorphoses, and has experienced a turbulent and interesting past in its search for identity. Claims are made that geographers put great emphasis on humans and their interaction with their environment. It is therefore widely accepted that Geography is greatly dominated in its teachings by an emphasis on Environmental Management. It is therefore also accepted that South African geographers will participate actively in this practice, and that it will be reflected, distinctively, in their scientific publications. This thesis seeks to examine the validity of the above assumptions. Thus the problem of whether or not the publications by South African geographers are environmentally orientated was surveyed and reviewed for the period between 1996 and 2001. In order to do this it was necessary to undertake an extensive review of all databases, which contained publications, as well as to obtain web-site information on the lecturers at the individual selected universities. Questionnaires were also sent out to the different departments and some personal interviews were conducted. The researcher had to refine the search to an in-depth analyses of only eight of the twenty one Geography departments at South African universities, based on the availability of information. The review reveals the current diverse nature of Environmental Geography in South Africa. In some instances papers have been written that remain within the boun-daries of its sub-discipline, such as the Geomorpological papers. They did however prove to incorporate an application to the field of Environmental Management which could not be ignored, and hence they had to be of environmental relevance. On further inspection it was found that there is an increasing awareness amongst all South African geographers for greater integration to solve problems holistically. More environmentally orientated papers were published towards the end of the study period under review. The survey conducted of the various environmentally orientated papers also revealed the broad and diverse sub-discipline that Geography can cover from an environmental perspective. It can be said that there is a growing trend amongst South African geographers to publish papers that are environmentally orientated. Whether the number (and emphasis that is placed on environmental issues) of publications is large enough, still remains to be seen. It was established that geographers are still focussing more on their specialised areas of interest, in their research. They are still not doing enough to promote an understanding of the environment. The researcher had to conclude that it is disheartening and disappointing to realise what amount of growth is still needed in the emphasis of the area of Environmental Management. Some serious work still lays ahead for geographers and the content of their publications in this respect.

Wanjiku, Lily Njanja. "An investigation into management strategies affecting performance of micro, small and medium enterpises (MSMEs) in Kenya." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/3120.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was geared towards the investigation of management strategies (factors) that affect the performance ofMSMEs in Kenya. Many developed countries record a time in history when entrepreneurial activities led to revival of economical growth after decline. This implies MSMEs is a very vital sector especially for a developing country like Kenya. MSMEs stagnate and their performance is uncertain according to writers such as Namusonge, Management inadequacies have been suggested in several studies. The objectives of this research was to, 1. To identifY the critical management factors affecting the performance of MSMEs in Kenya; ii. To establish the process through which managerial factors affect the performance of a MSMEs in Kenya ; m. To determine the integrative effect of various management factors in the MSMES in Kenya; IV. To establish the effect of demographics and management factors on performance, v. To establish effects of external environment on internal management factors A conceptual model was formulated from the literature review showing relationships of the management strategies and the environment they operate in. These relationships became the basis for the hypotheses which were later tested. In chapter 4, a mini research (pilot study) was conducted in May 2007,whose main aim was to test the reliability and validity of the research instruments. The 36 questionnaires returned were analysed through descriptive method. Results obtained indicated the instruments were reliable and the results valid. A few corrections suggested were made. The major correction was addition of question 35 to collect financial information. The data collection was done between mid August and mid October 2007.In chapter 5, the researcher analysesd the results of the survey after receiving 180 questionnaires. Time was a constraint. In chapter 6, the hypotheses and conceptual model were analysed and the results obtained suggested that, most strategies did not affect the profitability separately but severally. The integrated effect of the management strategies and the associated factors had a higher impact on performance of the MSMES than any individual strategies. In chapter 7, the conclusions, summaries and Recommendations are given.
Business Management
D. Com. (Business Management and Policy)

Veland, Siri, and Christine Merk. Lay person perceptions of marine carbon dioxide removal (CDR) – Working paper. OceanNETs, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/oceannets_d3.3.

Full text
Abstract:
This working paper presents first insights on lay public perceptions of marine carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches. In seven focus groups, three in Germany and four in Norway (including one pilot) the researchers asked members of the lay public to share their views of the ocean and the effects of climate change, four CDR approaches, as well as their reflections on responsible research and innovation (RRI) of marine CDR. The four CDR methods were ocean iron fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, artificial upwelling, and blue carbon management through restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems. In addition, respondents were asked to compare the four approaches. Our findings indicate that the public will be very supportive of blue carbon management irrespective of its actual carbon sequestration potential, due in part to the perceived bad state of marine ecosystems worldwide. Participants were skeptical whether any of the CDR approaches could have relevant effect on carbon sequestration and long-term storage; they reasoned about issues such as the ability to scale up treatments in time and space, unforeseen or unforeseeable effects on ecosystems in time and space, and the role of industry in the implementation process. They argued that despite the potential availability of marine CDR, industry and the general public should stop polluting behaviors and practices. Nevertheless, the participants universally agreed that further research on all four CDR methods should be pursued to better understand effects on climate, ecosystems, local communities, and the economy.

Abstract:
This paper summarizes research designed to characterize the current state of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries with respect to the adoption of Quality Risk Management as per ICH Q9. The research supports the hypotheses that the full value of QRM with respect to product quality and patient safety has not yet been realized. In addition, industry appears to be lagging behind regulatory expectations with respect to QRM maturity, indicating that current approaches to QRM require significant improvement.

Reyes, Julian, Jeb Williamson, and Emile Elias. Spatio-temporal analysis of Federal crop insurance cause of loss data: A roadmap for research and outreach effort. U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2018.7202608.ch.

Full text
Abstract:
Federal crop insurance provides a financial safety net for farmers against insured perils such as drought, heat, and freeze. In 2016 over $100 billion dollars of crops were insured through the Federal crop insurance program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Risk Management Agency. In this white paper, we analyze publicly-available Federal crop insurance data to understand how weather and climate-related perils, or causes of loss (COL), change over time and spatial areas. We find that over 75% of all weather/climate-related indemnities (i.e., crop losses) from 2001 to 2016 are due to three COL: drought, excess moisture, and hail. However, the extent to which these top COL and others impact indemnities is highly dependent on the time period, temporal scale, and spatial scale of analysis. Moreover, we identify what COL are region- or season-specific, and visualize COL trends over time. Finally, we offer a road map of research applications to quantify such trends in indemnities, as well as outreach and extension efforts that include an online data portal.

Lawrence, Sara, Michael Q. Hogan, and Elizabeth Brown. Planning for an Innovation District: Questions for Practitioners to Consider. RTI Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2018.op.0059.1902.

Full text
Abstract:
Innovation districts are physical spaces that serve to strengthen the foundations and institutions of an innovation ecosystem. The design, implementation, and management of formalized innovation districts is a new practice area. Research draws upon the experience of concentrated areas of innovation that occurred organically, such as Boston’s Route 128, as well as intentional projects to bring together innovators in large science and technology parks, such as North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park. Existing research focuses on how to define and design innovation districts and evaluate their impact, as well as general policy considerations. In this paper, we review the definitions and benefits of an innovation district, reviewing the existing empirical research on their impacts. We then propose a series of questions to guide practitioners in addressing the economic, physical, social, and governance elements of an innovation district. Finally, we outline some of the challenges in creating an innovation district and ways to measure progress, to allow practitioners to get ahead of potential issues in the future. This paper is intended to help policymakers and practitioners working in innovation and economic development translate the concepts of innovation ecosystems into actionable next steps for planning innovation districts in their communities.

Abstract:
The public and private sector, civil society, and academic institutions have developed many innovative solutions to manage public health aspects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Innovators have focused on tools for surveillance, supply chain management, clinical trials, diagnosis, communication, and developing vaccines. These have been supplemented by research collaboration platforms, isolation and hospital upgrading novelties, as well as risk stratification resources. This paper provides an overview of these solutions to enhance the evidence-based application of innovative public health approaches. The author’s also propose that a “living platform” for sharing public health innovations is developed.
