Gavaza, Takayedzwa. "Culturally-relevant augmented user interfaces for illiterate and semi-literate users." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006679.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses guidelines for developers of Augmented User Interfaces that can be used by illiterate and semi-literate users. To discover how illiterate and semi-literate users intuitively understand interaction with a computer, a series of Wizard of Oz experiments were conducted. In the first Wizard of Oz study, users were presented with a standard desktop computer, fitted with a number of input devices to determine how they assume interaction should occur. This study found that the users preferred the use of speech and gestures which mirrored findings from other researchers. The study also found that users struggled to understand the tab metaphor which is used frequently in applications. From these findings, a localised culturally-relevant tab interface was developed to determine the feasibility of localised Graphical User Interface components. A second study was undertaken to compare the localised tab interface with the traditional tabbed interface. This study collected both quantitative and qualitative data from the participants. It found that users could interact with a localised tabbed interface faster and more accurately than with the traditional counterparts. More importantly, users stated that they intuitively understood the localised interface component, whereas they did not understand the traditional tab metaphor. These user studies have shown that the use of self-explanatory animations, video feedback, localised tabbed interface metaphors and voice output have a positive impact on enabling illiterate and semi-literate users to access information.<br>TeX<br>Adobe Acrobat 9.51 Paper Capture Plug-in

Abramowicz, Sara. "Online recruitment of cutting-edge users : A user experience study of Ericsson Labs developer portal." Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-122008.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>This thesis investigates how to reach and recruit cutting-edge users to user experience studies. The recruitment of cutting-edge users is difficult since these users usually are not registered in recruitment databases. Cutting-edge users are advanced, early-adopters of technology and sometimes referred to as opinion leaders. Telecom research projects performed at Ericsson Research involve products and services 2-3 years ahead of the market; early-adopters and cutting edge users are therefore an important user group.</p><p> </p><p>To test recruitment methods a user experience study was performed of Ericsson Labs developer portal. Ericsson Labs offers Application Programming Interfaces for mobile and web applications development. Internet marketing theories were used to form a recruitment method. Respondents were recruited from the Ericsson Labs user database and they were contacted individually via email. The users were invited to share their thoughts and ideas about the portal to help improve and possibly influence the direction of the site.</p><p> </p><p>This thesis also assessed different online qualitative research methods applied for user experience research. Online focus groups such as bulletin boards were used to interact with users in addition to individual chat and voice interviews. Performing user experience research on the Internet is a cost-efficient way to interact with users in geographically dispersed areas.</p><p> </p><p>The findings from the study show that recruitment is hard; it is especially difficult to recruit active and conversational respondents from a user database. Providing incentives and using personal communication were shown to be successful strategies to convince users to participate in a study.</p>

Ward, Stephen James Safety Science Faculty of Science UNSW. "Designers and users: a survey of user research methods employed by Australian industrial designers." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Safety Science, 2006. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/26206.

Abstract:
Designers of mass produced products require knowledge about anticipated users of their designs in order to make reasonable predictions about how users will interact with a product and how that product will satisfy users??? needs. However, there is little reported study of how industrial designers get the information they need about users, or to what extent they adapt and use information available from fields of study such as ergonomics or market research. Study in this area is important, in order to have a knowledge base that will support development of methods and data sources that may help designers and others bring a better understanding of users into the product design process. In this study, group interviews and a questionnaire were used to ask industrial designers how and where they get information about users, and about their perceptions of the role and value of user research in design. The group discussions involved a total of 45 participants from nine companies in Sydney. A questionnaire that followed was completed by 35 respondents representing at least 15 different design consultancy companies throughout Australia. Results showed that the designers surveyed used many of the methods promoted in the literature of ergonomics, design and market research, but often in a cut-down form. For example, there was widespread use of work colleagues and family members as test subjects. Designers used quantitative information where it was applicable but often sought qualitative information that would provide insights or enable them to develop empathic understanding of the users. Time and cost constraints limited the extent to which designers could engage in user research activity but there was general agreement that user research was a necessary part of design and that in the future designers will require a stronger capability in user research. Further research could focus on the evaluation of user research methods used in design and the potential for further collaboration between designers and other specialists in this area.

Cossar, Jeanette. "Service users' perspectives in child protection and adoption research." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2015. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/53470/.

Full text
Abstract:
This critical commentary is based on four research studies and associated publications. The studies are all concerned with researching service users’ perspectives and with service user involvement in the research process. Two of the studies examined adults’ perspectives on adoption, focusing on support for birth relatives and on post-adoption contact. Two of the studies focused on the perspectives of children and young people on seeking help with abuse and neglect, and on their experiences of child protection services. The commentary begins with a literature review which sets the context for the studies. It covers the development of service user participation in social work practice and in research, and existing research on the perspectives of service users on child protection and adoption services. The second chapter explores methods of involving service users as participants in research and as co-researchers in child protection and adoption research. The final chapter discusses the contribution of the studies, focusing both on the subject matter and the process of research. It is argued that service users’ perspectives can address a need identified within relationship-based practice to pay attention to power differentials in social work relationships. Service users’ perspectives highlight the value service users accord to the relationships they form with social workers, and suggest ways in which practice could be improved to avoid the experience of child protection and adoption services compounding the effects of a difficult life history. Involving service users in the research process can allow service users a distinctive platform. It is argued that building collaborative relationships between academic and service user researchers can enable service users’ perspectives to contribute to the construction of social work knowledge, in a manner that contrasts with the inevitable constraints in service user involvement in child protection and adoption practice.

Tikkanen, Marjo. "Engaging users with surrealist techniques." Thesis, Malmö högskola, Fakulteten för kultur och samhälle (KS), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-21557.

Full text
Abstract:
Building on current methods used in the field of interaction design, this thesis aims to explore how surrealist art techniques could be applied to the fuzzy front end of a design process. This is done to inspire and expand the current range of user engagement methods. The premise is that all people are creative, but they might need tools and techniques to express themselves. This creative potential could be harnessed more in design processes. The techniques conceived by surrealist artists could serve as generative tools that empower users to create, discuss, be playful and reduce their self-censorship in expression. The process conducted follows a research through design approach, as the aim is to explore the application of methods rather than solve a specific problem. Within the process a literature review, expert interviews, workshops and experiments are conducted. The experimentation with surrealist techniques takes place mostly in the context of Malmö City Library, imagining future uses and scenarios for the library with users. The outcome is a knowledge contribution to the field of interaction design, comprising of qualities for user engagement defined in the process and techniques that seem to have potential as user engagement methods.

Because forming a connection is known as "following" in social networks such as Twitter, we refer to this as the follow-back problem. The targets and their friends form a directed graph which we refer to as the "friends graph." The agent's goal is to get the targets to follow it, and it is allowed to interact with the targets and their friends. To understand what features impact the probability of an interaction resulting in a follow-back, we conduct an empirical analysis of several thousand interactions in Twitter. We build a model of the follow-back probabilities based upon this analysis which incorporates features such as the friend and follower count of the target and the neighborhood overlap of the target with the agent. We find optimal policies for simple network topologies such as directed acyclic graphs. For arbitrary directed graphs we develop integer programming heuristics that employ network centrality measures and a graph score we define as the follow-back score. We show that these heuristic policies perform well in simulation on a real Twitter network.<br>by Krishnan Rajagopalan.<br>S.M.

Kao, Wei-Chuan. "Characteristics and performance of research and development tax credit users." Thesis, Boston University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/11100.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (D.B.A.)--Boston University<br>This paper examines the firm-specific characteristics, the R&D spending, and R&D performance of U.S. R&D tax credit users (i.e., firms with currently earned R&D tax credits). Prior literature finds that the R&D tax credit is effective in increasing R&D expenditures and reducing managers' myopic behavior. However, most of these findings are based on estimated R&D tax credits rather than actual R&D tax credits. In contrast, I use actual R&D tax credits reported by the firms in their 10-Ks. I examine three issues related to the use of R&D tax credits. First, I investigate whether the likelihood of using the credit varies with characteristics related to research ability and tax advantages of firms. Next, I analyze whether the use of R&D tax credit increases real R&D spending. Finally, I explore if the tax credit impacts R&D performance, by examining innovation quality, future pre-tax profitability, and return volatility. The results are consistent with my hypotheses. Firms with more research ability and tax advantages are more likely to use R&D tax credits. I find that R&D tax credits increase real R&D spending. Finally, compared to the R&D of non-credit users, the excess qualified research of tax credit users contributes to better innovation quality and higher return volatility, but lower pre-tax profitability. Overall, these findings are consistent with the stated congressional purposes in enacting the R&D tax credit provisions.

Abstract:
When people 'go to the theatre' we know that they are audiences. When young people go to Contact, however, they might be audiences, performers and/or theatre makers - they might play all three or more roles. Contact's users blur existing concepts and terminology. When we want to know more about theatre audiences, audience research offers models based on the distinction between audiences and theatre makers. If we want to know more about Contact's users, however, a model reflecting the blending of audiences and theatre makers' roles has yet to be developed. This thesis engages with Contact's users. It maps some of their multiple roles and experiences by asking two main questions: What are the practices of the people attending Contact and how can these practices be researched? A range of qualitative methods is necessary in order to investigate the wide variety of Contact's users' roles and experiences. Individual and group interviews are drawn from audience research, creative workshops are drawn from communication studies, and participant observation and visual research from the social sciences. Finally, a new method, Walking Fieldwork, is adapted for the use in theatre. A number of case studies are employed to investigate Contact's users. These case studies involve the observation of young actors during rehearsals and performances, the observation of participants in an outreach project, the investigation of audiences' experiences of two productions, and several short post-show interviews with general Contact audiences. This study found evidence that the relationship between theatre makers and audiences is changing. The term 'theatre user' is introduced as it opens up an area of overlap between the two and fits contemporary practices at Contact more closely. Contact's users function as communities, participants and co-creators. The descriptions of these roles and experiences contained in this thesis are understood as an initial exploration into practices of contemporary theatre users. However, further research is needed to build a more detailed understanding of these practices. In terms of research methods, this study found that the academic field of audience research needs to develop methods which are sensitive to both the backgrounds of theatre users and the theatrical context. The argument is put forward that audience research should become more aware of methods for the investigation of human experience and should enter into a 'methods-dialogue' with other academic fields of study.

Mousavizadeh, Kashipaz Seyed Mohammadreza. "Three Research Essays on Online Users' Concerns and Web Assurance Mechanisms." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc862772/.

Full text
Abstract:
Online users struggle with different concerns whenever they use information systems. According to Miyazaki and Fernandez (2001), there are three important categories of concerns for online users: privacy concern, third party fraudulent behavior concern ("system security"), and online website fraudulent behavior concern ("security"). Kim, Sivasailam, and Rao (2004) proposed a similar categorization for web assurance dimensions. They argue that online websites are supposed to address users' privacy, security, and business integrity concerns to decrease user concerns. Although several researchers tried to answer how different factors affect these concerns and how these concerns affect users' behavior, there are so many ambiguities and contradictions in this area. This Essay I in this work develops a comprehensive map of the role of online privacy concern to identify related factors and categorize them through an in-depth literature review and conducting meta-analysis on online privacy concern. Although users have concerns about their privacy and security, there is still growth in the number of internet users and electronic commerce market share. One possible reason is that websites are applying assurance mechanisms to ensure the privacy of their users. Therefore, it could be an interesting research topic to investigate how privacy assurance mechanisms affect users concern and, consequently, their behavior in different concerns such as e-commerce and social networking sites. Different types of web assurance mechanisms are used by websites. The most prevalent among these assurance mechanisms include web assurance seals and assurance statements and privacy customization features. Essay II and III aims to address how these mechanisms influence e-commerce and social networking sites users' behavior. Essay II applies the procedural fairness theory by Lind and Tyler (1988) to explain how and why the web assurance mechanisms affect consumers' perceived risks. Essay III addresses the issue of self-disclosure on social networking sites. Applying protection motivation theory, this study aims to evaluate the effect of web assurance mechanisms on online privacy concern and self-disclosure behavior on the social networking sites.

Abstract:
Literature, including service users' own accounts, confirms that people labelled as `mentally ill' experience oppression and powerlessness both in their contacts with psychiatric services and more widely in society. There are calls to challenge this oppression by engaging in strategies for empowerment, for example via advocacy and campaigning by the mental health user/survivor movement. Research has also been identified as a strategy for empowerment for mental health service users. This dissertation proposes participatory research (PR) as a potentially empowering research methodology consisting of a process of investigation, education and action in which participants work jointly with researchers throughout. This research therefore aims to: explore the nature of oppression and power in the lives of mental health service users in Britain; assess the extent to which participatory research can function as a strategy for empowerment for mental health service users; consider the extent to which PR principles can be adhered to in research with mental health service users; and highlight issues for methodological development arising from the practice of PR. These aims were explored via a year-long PR project in which the author worked jointly with a group of mental health service users to design and undertake research, and to take action based on its findings. Fieldwork data are analysed in the context of existing theoretical, conceptual and empirical literature on oppression, power, empowerment and PR. It is concluded that PR can facilitate processes of individual and group empowerment for mental health service users, and may therefore be a first step towards the longer-term goal of achieving empowerment in the liberational sense of changing oppressive social structures. This latter goal is more likely to be achieved by combining research with other strategies for empowerment such as collective action and campaigning, and by joining together with other oppressed groups with common interests, such as the disability movement.

Full text
Abstract:
In the future, as world markets become more diverse, designers will be increasingly asked to create products for people dissimilar to themselves. Human issues, such as product pleasure, will also become more important as advances in manufacturing (enabling companies to produce high quality goods more cheaply) will mean companies will look elsewhere to achieve a competitive edge. These changes will affect designers who presently work with little or no user information. This thesis investigates the attributes designers need in resources that offer them an immediate yet broad understanding of users. The research presented in the thesis has a philosophical strand and a design strand. In the design strand, two mock up resources and a prototype resource are developed. These creations are used in the philosophical strand: the mock ups are used to provide focus while collecting opinions from participants and the prototype is evaluated at the end of the research as if it were a real resource. The thesis starts with a literature review; this review reveals that designers need to understand users' physical, psychological and social needs as well as their environments if they are to design appropriate products for them. It explains that designers find much ergonomics information too technical and not visual enough and reveals that no tools or methods exist that offer a broad and instant understanding of users at the start of the design process. Following this, the results from a set of interviews and a focus group are presented. These studies reveal that designers want both personal and general user information that is reliable, video based, contextual and authentic. The results also show that designers want a fast, online resource that allows information to be easily tagged, compared and shared. Next, the thesis describes the development of the prototype resource and its examination using a heuristic inspection. This resource is then evaluated by designers. The evaluation reveals that designers perceived that the resource would be of value to the design process and thought that the videos showing people going about their everyday lives and the virtual tours around people's homes would be particularly useful. The thesis concludes that designers want contextual user information presented as easily navigable video in an Internet based resource. In doing so, it provides an original contribution to knowledge.

Abstract:
An equity research report consists in forecast a stock's price target for the year end of 2020, and comparing it with the current price in order to conclude if the stock is over valuated or undervalued. To provide a price target for Spotify, we started to analyse the business model and the company's strategy and to identify its key drivers of profitability. Additionally, is key to study the macroeconomic framework and the industry where the company acts in order to evaluate its competitive positioning. Based on the analysis performed and the data gathered, the following step is to determine the assumptions to forecast the company's accounts for the next 6 years. Once the forecasts are performed, we applied two valuations models in order to obtain the price target: the Discounted Cash Flow method (DCF) and the Subscription Based Companies (SBC) valuation model. The price target obtained by the DCF was USD178.52, with an upside potential of 34.2%, and USD174.43 for the SBC model, with an upside potential of 31.2%. Finally, a risk assessment was performed in order to identify the main risks that impact the valuation and the company's business.<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Johnson, Mark. "The Dyslexic User's Interface Support Tool (DUIST) : a framework for performance enhancing interface adaptation strategies for dyslexic computer users." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2007. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/2683/.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to the nature of the symptoms experienced by dyslexic individuals (e.g. defective visual processing, short term memory deficit and motor control problems) an investigation into support strategies to aid persons suffering from the condition seems strongly justifiable. As such, an extensive review of existing support techniques for dyslexic computer users are explored leading to the formulation of four central research models; dyslexia symptoms, symptom alleviating interface strategies, adjustable interface components and a dynamically adaptable interface preference elicitation mechanism. These models provide the foundation for the design of the Dyslexic User’s Interface Support Tool (DUIST) framework. Using a user centred design approach, the support framework is developed, tested and subsequently evaluated with positive results. Performance gains for dyslexic subjects in reading speed and reading accuracy exemplify the apparent benefits of framework utilisation (e.g. dyslexic mean reading speed increased by 4.98 wpm vs. control gains of 0.18 wpm; dyslexic mean reading errors reduced by 0.64 per 100 words vs. control reductions of 0.06 fewer errors per 100 words). Subsequent research into the long-term impact of framework utilisation; the perceived benefits of applying research formulated models to interfaces designed for dyslexics; and alternative strategies to portability all now seem justified. That said, the findings presented thus far warrants investigation by any reader actively interested in dyslexia; strategies for dyslexia symptom relief support environments for dyslexic computer users; applications of adaptive interfaces; and all potential system designers who may be considering developing any type of graphical interface for a dyslexic user group

Full text
Abstract:
Internet content and Internet users are becoming more linguistically diverse as more people speaking different languages come online and produce content on user-generated content platforms. Several platforms have emerged as truly global platforms with users speaking many different languages and coming from around the world. It is now possible to study human behavior on these platforms using the digital trace data the platforms make available about the content people are authoring. Network literature suggests that people cluster together by language, but also that there is a small average path length between any two people on most Internet platforms (including two speakers of different languages). If so, multilingual users may play critical roles as bridges or brokers on these platforms by connecting clusters of monolingual users together across languages. The large differences in the content available in different languages online underscores the importance of such roles. This thesis studies the roles of multilingual users and platform design on two large, user-generated content platforms: Wikipedia and Twitter. It finds that language has a strong role structuring each platform, that multilingual users do act as linguistic bridges subject to certain limitations, that the size of a language correlates with the roles its speakers play in cross-language connections, and that there is a correlation between activity and multilingualism. In contrast to the general understanding in linguistics of high levels of multilingualism offline, this thesis finds relatively low levels of multilingualism on Twitter (11%) and Wikipedia (15%). The findings have implications for both platform design and social network theory. The findings suggest design strategies to increase multilingualism online through the identification and promotion of multilingual starter tasks, the discovery of related other-language information, and the promotion of user choice in linguistic filtering. While weak-ties have received much attention in the social networks literature, cross-language ties are often not distinguished from same-language weak ties. This thesis finds that cross-language ties are similar to same-language weak ties in that both connect distant parts of the network, have limited bandwidth, and yet transfer a non-trivial amount of information when considered in aggregate. At the same time, cross-language ties are distinct from same-language weak ties for the purposes of information diffusion. In general cross-language ties are smaller in number than same-language ties, but each cross-language tie may convey more diverse information given the large differences in the content available in different languages and the relative ease with which a multilingual speaker may access content in multiple languages compared to a monolingual speaker.

Wang, Yifei. "Designing chatbot interfaces for language learning : ethnographic research into affect and users' experiences." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2742.

Abstract:
During the past few decades, there has been increasing attention to multimodal adaptive language learning interface design. The purpose of this study was to examine users’ experiences with a chatbot language learning interface through the lens of cognitive emotions and emotions in learning. A particular focus of this study was on users’ interactions with a chatbot in a public setting and in a private environment. Focusing on the event of users’ interaction with a chatbot interface, seventy-five interactions were videotaped in this study, in which fifteen users were asked to interact with the chatbot “Lucy” for their language learning. The video-stimulated post interaction interviews with participants provided complementary data for understanding their experiences with the language learning system. Analysis of twenty-five interactions selected from a total of seventy-five revealed five main factors of chatbot language tutor interface design and their relative significance in the process of users’ meaning making and knowledge construction. Findings showed that users’ sensory, emotional, cultural, linguistic and relational engagement influenced their responses to the chatbot interface, which in turn, shaped their learning processes. Building on a theoretical framework of cognitive emotions and emotions in learning, this study documented users’ language learning processes with the chatbot language learning interface by investigating users’ experiences. The findings and techniques resulting from this study will help designers and researchers achieve a better understanding of users’ experiences with technology and the role of emotions in the processes of learning when using technology and assist them to improve the design of language learning environments.

Kelly, Andrea Susan. "Electrophysiological and behavioural measures of central auditory processing in adult cochlear implant users." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/3126.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to determine the relationship between auditory evoked potential measures, speech perception and frequency discrimination in 12 experienced adult cochlear implant (CI) users and to compare the evoked potential results in the CI subjects to those of a group of age- and gender-matched control subjects with normal hearing. The CI subjects all used the Nucleus CI-22 implant with the SPEAK processing strategy. Subject age range was 27-74 years (mean 50.9 years). All had used their implant for a minimum of one year (range 13-76 months, mean duration of implant use 37.5 months).Duration of profound deafness prior to implantation ranged from 1 - 40 years (mean 15.6 years).Middle latency response (MLR), obligatory N1-P2 cortical potentials, mismatch negativity and P3a auditory evoked potential were recorded. Speech perception was evaluated using tests from "The Minimum Speech Test Battery for Adult Cochlear Implant Users". Frequency discrimination was measured using a two-alternative forced choice procedure, to record difference limens (DL) for a 1000Hz tone. Duration of deafness correlated strongly with speech perception scores with poor scores reflecting greater years of deafness. The most sensitive of all the evoked potential measures was P2 latency, with strong relationships found between P2 and duration of deafness and speech perception scores. Earlier P2 latencies were associated with shorter durations of deafness and higher speech perception scores. In general, mismatch negativity was absent or degraded in CI subjects with poor speech scores. In better implant users mismatch negativity was typically present to both large and small frequency differences and demonstrated characteristic changes of increased latency and decreased area and amplitude for the more difficult discrimination task (as seen in the normal hearing group). Na amplitude of the MLR correlated negatively with duration of deafness, with small amplitudes reflecting greater duration of deafness. Frequency DLs were very variable, and no strong relationships were found between these and the evoked potential or speech perception measures.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a new methodology based on directly measuring user behavior and making decisions based on experimental results. I have built and tested a tool which will enable researchers to use the methodology to determine whether particular financial statement presentations are more beneficial than others. The tool records user movement on a computer screen with mouse tracking, which allows researchers to track user behavior in greater detail than ever before. The methodology was tested on a subject pool of non-professional financial analysts and junior professionals, who were presented with a company’s financial data in the current GAAP and a new proposed FASB presentation format. The results show that this methodology could be useful in differentiating between present GAAP and proposed alternatives.

Full text
Abstract:
The motif of a '<I>closer relationship' </I>between academics and practitioners in doing research and the impetus for <I>'user engagement' </I>in different stages of social science research has become a subject of considerable interest to policy-makers over recent years and has featured in policy statements of government. Following the UK Government's 1993 White Paper, <I>Realising our Potential: A Strategy for Science, Engineering and Technology</I>, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) emphasised meeting the needs of the non-academic users of social science research and introduced a policy which enhanced funding opportunities to academics proposing to engage with an explicit agenda of collaboration. But is this initiative sufficient to realise the benefit of its proposed outcomes? Are policy-makers aware of the possibilities and limitations of <I>research collaboration</I> between academics and practitioners in practice? The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the perceptions of academics and practitioners of the process of research collaboration and to provide a better understanding of this process. Projects for study were identified from those which were on ESRC's list of funded research projects in the management discipline and which appeared to be responding to the ESRC's encouragement of collaboration between academics and non-academic users of their research. Findings from this study are presented through three cases of research collaboration between academics and practitioners, who were interviewed in their workplaces. The findings are combined with the results of supplementary interviews with academics in other management departments in British universities and policy-makers in the ESRC. Bringing the results together demonstrates how <I>research collaboration </I>works out in practice, and what the academics' and practitioners' views of research collaboration are. The findings also reveal some limitations of collaboration on both sides which need to be considered by those promoting or entering into research collaboration. In addition, this study develops a theoretical discussion of research collaboration based on existing literature of collaboration in other contexts (especially science and technology Research and Development and inter-organisational collaboration) and suggests directions for future research.

Haberman, Vicki. "Designing for diverse users - a case study on touchscreen smartphone customization." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/43688.

Full text
Abstract:
The touchscreen smartphone platform is inherently flexible, giving it the potential to meet the needs and desires of individuals diverse in age and ability. Despite universal design research efforts providing industry with guidance to address this opportunity, current designs fall short. The disconnect stems from differing priorities in design and development and opposing approaches to defining and grouping the user population. The research presented in this dissertation aims to remove these issues from the process of discovering touchscreen smartphone design opportunities. It focuses on users' prior and desired customizations rather than ability- or market-factors. Data were collected on participants' devices' out-of-the-box, current and desired device states along with related stories about their actual and desired device modifications. Template and image analyses identified patterns in the data, which also revealed an underlying structure for organizing and presenting participants' needs and desires associated with smartphone touchscreen customizations. The needs and desires suggest opportunities for industry to shift towards universal design. The structure offers an approach to addressing the gaps between the ability-centered and market-driven approaches to the design of consumer technology.

Pt. 1. Service Based Evaluation. Effective communication within and between services is important in the development of multi-disciplinary collaboration, effective service delivery and satisfactory patient treatment. The primary aim of this study was to audit assessment letter content across three therapy disciplines within Ayrshire and Arran Consulting and Clinical Psychology Services (CCPS). A secondary aim was to audit content within the three therapy disciplines. The overall aim was to ascertain service implications based on the current letter standard. A random sample of sixty letters were audited, twenty written by Clinical Psychologists, twenty by Counselling Psychologists and a further twenty by CBT Psychotherapists. The results suggested overall content inclusion was of a high standard. However, there were some inclusion gaps in specific information pertaining to the themes of case complexity, reason for seeking assistance, previous psychiatric and medical history, maintaining factors and estimated treatment length. It was concluded that training should be conducted across the service to further develop communication within these areas.

For example, in 2017, "A Love So Beautiful"”produced by tencent, and in 2018 , there were many online dramas in iqiyi, such as "Story of Yanxi Palace", have created hot topics before the TV channels in Taiwan broadcasted. The reason is that many listeners have already used the Internet platform and are using computers, tablets, mobile phones and other vehicles for watching. They are no longer using the traditional TV . For the drams addicted, emerging video sites play a very important role. OTT operators spend huge sums of money to produce programs, and they also purchased the first rights of many overseas programs. They have successfully turned "Internet tracing" binge-watched into the trend of Taiwan's audio-visual market, and have also prompted more and more cord-cutters in Taiwan's cable TV. OTT TV brings rich and diverse contents of programs to the audience, but the OTT user's adhesiveness is not high. they will not only use the same streaming video platform, but according to which platform the drama that you want to binge-watched or which the source of the platform is the fastest in order choose the midia selection to use. Results of the research are as follows:@ The computerization procedure (including system function, organization atmosphere, education trainning, work exchange) had a significant impact on attitudes and behaviour of members of the organization. Most reporters were initially worried about the transition but supported it on the whole.Overall reaction to the computerization process was not overly affected by factors such as the age, position, years of employment and experience of individual reporters. The process of computerization had a certain psychological effect on users, Who had to adjust to the completely different nature and even different thought processes between writing and typing on a computer. Although when typing, performance in terms of physical speed decreased by approximately 38 minutes per every two hours as compared to writing by hand, the actual content, style and layout did not differ. Computerization is valuable to the Chinese newspaper industry as it allows the streamlining of the entire writing, editing and layout process whilst boosting speed and lowering costs. Writers using computer technology will have more time to concentrate on the editorial quality of written articles, and in turn, newspaper quality will improve.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>傳播研究所<br>106<br>The prevalence of mobile dating apps relies on the smart handheld devices, which have geolocation and matching. Different from the previous online dating chat rooms, the mobile dating apps accelerate the development of offline relationships. This study aims to explain the phenomenon of Taiwanese users who engage in cybersex on mobile dating apps, in terms of their motivations, uses, and effects. Users who engage in interacting sexually with strangers online, can easily release their sexually hobby, such as: BDSM and anal sex. Also, the anonymity of the dating apps can be viewed as a protective umbrella for self-disclosing the abovementioned topics. The current study divides motivations into four variables, they are: motivations of cybersex, frequency of use, sexual satisfaction, and sociosexuality; uses into two variables: partnered-cybersex, self disclosure in sex; and the effects into three variables: cybersex addict, offline relationship, and transferring to new contact platforms. The research finding shows, male users are more inclined to sexual motivations, whereas female users prefer perceived anonymity, and not be identified by others. Except for sexual satisfaction, motivations, frequency, sociosexuality, and BFI are positively related to the uses of dating apps. Among "sexting", "picture sex", "electronic sex", "sexting" has the highest degree of acceptability, and female users prefer sexting than male users. Moreover, it is found that the uses of mobile dating apps are positively related to cybersex addict, offline relationships, and transferring to other contact platforms. Transferring to other contact platforms can be regarded as intentions to maintain relationships, not only conducting deeper self-disclosure, but paving the way for developing offline relationships.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>設計研究所<br>94<br>The color coating process is different from that of plastics color. It has a unique color presentation, especially in metal coating (i.e., aluminum included), pearl coating (i.e., mica included) and comfortable soft-touch coating, nap coating, etc. These bring colors, gloss, textures and protection results that plastics color can not achieve. The textual processes of a computer mouse that can affect users’ visual, tactile, and synesthesia perceptions are vital issues in this study. This study first created a questionnaire pertinent to users’ preferences regarding mouse useage. A total of 40 participants were recruited to answer the questionnaire. Moreover, the currently available mouse color coating processes were analyzed. A neutral color was adopted for this study. This color was used for 8 different mouse coating processes for the experimental purpose. In the questionnaire, users’ visual, tactile, and synesthesia perceptions were asked based on a 7-interval Likert scale. The generated data were further analyzed by means of statistical analyses. Because there are various polar adjectives for describing product textures, this study adopted polar adjectives from relevant research studies and generated 8 pairs of polar adjectives. They are hard vs. soft, rough vs. smooth, dark vs. bright, mat vs. glossy, heavy vs. light, comfortable vs. uncomfortable, cold vs. warm, and emotional vs. rational. The results generated from one-way ANOVA revealed that: (1) Except the polar adjective of emotional vs. rational, all other polar adjectives showed statistically significant differences. (2)Mouse 1, mouse 3, mouse 4, mouse 5, mouse 7, and mouse 8 all showed significant perceptions. More specifically, mouse 1 revealed soft, bright, glossy in synesthesia perceptions and bright, revealed light, comfortable in tactile perceptions. Mouse 3 revealed smooth in visual perceptions and revealed soft in synesthesia perceptions. Mouse 4 revealed comfortable in synesthesia perceptions, and smooth, comfortable, bright in tactile perceptions. Mouse 5 revealed light, comfortable in visual perceptions and comfortable in tactile perceptions. Mouse 7 revealed smooth in tactile perceptions. Mouse 8 revealed bright, smooth, comfortable in synesthesia perceptions.

Abstract:
碩士<br>世新大學<br>資訊管理學研究所(含碩專班)<br>107<br>This study used the largest database of internet user behaviors among Taiwan’s college students in the past ten years to analyze and construct a model to understand the relationship between internet users' behaviors and academic performance, and to explore the possible factors behind such relationship. Those questionnaires’ survey of internet usage in college students was performed in 2010 April. The ratio of male was 49.1%. In those questionnaires, a total of 10774 (99.1%) questionnaires contain responses to academic performance. 95% of the sample started to use internet since middle school or earlier; 94.4% of the students self-reported good relationship with their parents. The mean hours of internet use were 24 hours per week. Over 80.2% of students had experiences of excessive indulgence in online games. After analyzing academic performance with the other factors using cross tab and correlation analysis, we found out that females’ academic performance is better than males’ and parent’s marriage relationship has some effect on the student’s academic performance. This research used exploratory factor analysis to extract five construct factors (pornography(P), self-control(SC), social relationship(SR), emotional regulation(ER), virtualization(V)) to explain internet use behaviors and construct multivariate regression model and SEM model. The main findings were: (1) Independent variables included gender, years of internet usage, P, SC, V, and SR, would affect academic performance. (2) In multiple regression model: P, SC, V and SR still have small but significant effects on academic performance. (3) In SEM: SC, P, and years of usage were all intervening variables of gender. SR was replaced by years of internet usage. Only V has independent influence that was only barely significant. (4) From 200 to 3000 optimal sample size theory was proven. As our technology improves and cellular data becomes more and more common, internet’s availability has become very different from the days when you can only access it in a certain spot. Thus, we need to adjust our research to focus on such differences to get a better result.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>商學研究所<br>98<br>Facebook is so popular in Taiwan from 2009 and it’s also getting hot in online social network service. There is more and more news about Facebook’s success recently. Friends beside you and me may all have a Facebook account; you can’t refuse the great mass fervor of it and look forward to know what marketer can do on Facebook. The goal of this research is studying Facebook user behavior and finding the patterns. First, we review related researches about online social network service and online user behavior. Many studying about user behavior are finding behavior pattern through digging from website data like log data, browsing data etc. In order to understand the motivation and experience behind the user behavior, we conduct in-depth interviews. Total 42 Facebook users in Taiwan were interviewed. From the qualitative analysis of interview data, we found that many Facebook users have similar behavior in some using dimensions. But if we divide users by motivation of using Facebook, we can have two groups of users: Game Users and Social Users. There are some differences between them. Game Users have fewer friends and less interaction on Facebook. They don’t often update their profile and Wall; join fewer Fans and Groups on Facebook. They concentrate on playing games and stay longer on Facebook after they log in. In contract, Social Users have more friends and interaction on Facebook. They update their profile and Wall more frequently; join more Fans and Groups, and have more experiences about word-of-mouth on Facebook. According to traits of different user groups, we give proper marketing suggestions to each group. In this research we provide two marketing cases on Facebook: Fans marketing of 7-ELEVEN (more suitable for Social Users) and placement marketing in a Facebook game: Happy Farm by juice brand:“Minute Maid” (more suitable for Game Users). Understanding user behavior on Facebook can help us to find what marketers can do on Facebook and have a reference for internet marketing. Furthermore, the finding about different online user groups may be worthy for future studying and observation.

Abstract:
碩士<br>南臺科技大學<br>行銷與流通管理系<br>107<br>In recent years, in order to attract students to school, in addition to excellent teachers, teaching software and hardware, campus environment and other conditions, the equipment provided by the library and the quality of service are indispensable factors. This study explores the satisfaction of library users when using library resources and participating in activities. The research purpose is:1. Understand the satisfaction of library users with the school library services. 2. Analyze the difference in the satisfaction of users with different background variables on school library services. This study is based on the users of the S University Library in southern Taiwan. A total of 200 questionnaires were sent out in this study, and 21 invalid questionnaires were deducted. A total of 179 valid questionnaires were obtained. Data analysis methods include reliability analysis, validity analysis, independent sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The results show that the satisfaction order is the highest in spatial planning, the second is service attitude, and then is hardware device, and the lowest is the promotion activity. Among the gender and the satisfaction of each aspect index, there are only two indicators that achieve significant difference. The other four facets and 15 indicators do not reach a significant level, indicating that there is no difference in the satisfaction of the 15 indicators of different genders. In the satisfaction of grade and various aspect indicators, hardware equipment and service attitudes are significant differences. The average student satisfaction is in the fourth grade > third grade > second grade > first grade. Promotional activities and spatial planning have not reached a significant level. Based on the above findings, this study suggests:1. It is recommended that the library increase the propaganda method. Do not just do the online propaganda, but do publicity in places where there are many people on campus. 2. In order to be fair and resources be used more effectively, it is recommended that the library limit the time of computer use.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>企業管理系<br>103<br>The number of Facebook users exceeded 1.23 billion in 2013 and the number of users continue rise. Therefore, enterprises have set up exclusive brand page. They would like to increase interaction with consumers or deliver the product-related promotional messages. To the number of fans of brand page in Taiwan, the top three are Pringles (more than 26 million fans), Dove (more than 21 million fans) and Window(more than 16 million fans). But those value of pages’ engagement are less than 3%. (value of engagement = people who are engaged in the page/ the number of fans in the page) In other words, there are a lot of fans in the pages, but few fans click like, leave messages, comment or share the information about the page. So this research is to explore the reason for why the fans discontinued using pages. This research uses A-Post Acceptance Model of IS Continuance to explore factors that affect page members in discontinuing using the pages. Such factors include perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, social influence, pages rules and satisfaction. Our population of this research is the users who have ever the experience of using pages. A total of 242 valid questionnaires are collected and analyzed the data and test the hypothesis by structural equation modeling. Research results found that the fans discontinued using pages will be influenced by perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, Social Influence, pages rules and satisfaction. And satisfaction will be influenced by perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. So this research shows when the fans feel usefulness or unhappy, they will feel dissatisfied and not continue to use pages. And the fans won’t want to use pages if they know something bad about the brand by their friends or other fans. The pages rules also rise users’ discontinuous intention. Finally, according to this research give the page operators some suggestions to help them let their fans come back and be more loyal.

碩士<br>國立政治大學<br>傳播學院碩士在職專班<br>104<br>The Net world is full of sounds and noises. Taken its format of social networking, Facebook radically rewrites the role of spectator used to be designated by traditional mass media. Nowadays the spectator is given the power of transmitting, rewriting, and remolding any social event when surfing and browsing Facebook. As we look at each spectator as a node in the Net world, the relation between one node and many other nodes has become organic as they perform the actions of “share”, “comment”, and “like” on Facebook. This study aims to analyze how and why Facebook users react to certain articles as they browse through a specifically designed Facebook account, in which articles of various themes and topics are posted. It also tries to differentiate those Facebook users according to gender, age, and occupation, in order to understand their personal preferences toward different articles. The methodologies of this study include participation and observation, and one-on-one in-depth interview, so that motivations of each study subject’s responses to those articles can be found. The study findings are as following: 1. The preferences of certain article correspond to gender, age, and occupation of study subjects. 2. The self presentation of study subjects is reflected through the “skip” function. 3. It is difficult to contextualize the relationship between the self presentation of study subjects and those chosen articles. 4. The surfing and browsing action performed by study subjects on Facebook elimate the line between virtual world and real world.
