Abstract:
This article aims to explore, (de)construct, (re)affirm and (re)position my experiences in Indigenous-centred research through an Indigenous lens. Specifically, I look to highlight my experiences as a fourth-year undergraduate student who undertook a two-month Indigenous- centred research journey in Peru. This writing is an examination of my research processes to determine if I was able to maintain integrity with ethical Indigenous research practices and protocols, as outlined in my initial project proposal. As part of this reflection, I will explore how the qualitative methods of a critical Indigenous ethnography (re)positions research through the re-conceptualisation of these methods as natural configurations of Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies. Indigenous epistemologies encompass the same relational, political and storytelling processes described in critical, reflexive and auto-ethnographic research. Storytelling has been said to blur the discursive lines of research traditions, and as an Indigenous researcher, I believe I have a responsibility to share this story.

The central concern of this paper is to discuss the positioning of the researcher while researching one’s own community ethnographically. It argues that insider and outsider positioning of a researcher in insider ethnographic research appears in a contextual, iterative, and emergent manner. The strategies provide space for critical self-reflexive practices in the field, thereby enhancing the quality standard. In addition, it argues that the positioning of the researcher appears while maintaining the ethical issue of confidentiality. Thus, the paper claims that it is not necessary to set the ideological frame for structuring the researchers whilst engaging in the field with particular positioning. It highlights that the defined roles of a researcher guide him/her in a way denying to engage in the field adapting the contextual phenomena, thereby creating difficulties for generating quality data.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to discuss how fieldwork impacted the author's own and one participant's positioning; the author's reflexivity, experiences and feelings of alterity; the participant's performances and conversations between the author and participant.Design/methodology/approachThe author uses a confessional tale to describe the time spent with the participant and confesses how it impacted on the author as the researcher. The author examines her biases, feelings, and vulnerabilities, and explores some of the methodological and positioning issues with which she struggled.FindingsThe author ponders on what she learned while being in such close quarters with a participant and discusses what she should keep in mind about herself as the researcher during subsequent data collection forays. Researchers should know themselves well before attempting such closeness because when we are researchers, we can’t change who we are as people.Originality/valueIt is believed that the extreme researcher/participant closeness was unique but was, at the same time, an extremely useful form of data collection.

Abstract:
Previous studies on international students have helped identify issues that explain these students’ intercultural identities in relation to the learning in English-medium contexts. Scholarly attention has attached importance to the ‘results’ or the ‘process’ of the identity movements in the context of international education. Little attention has been paid to the conversations on the epistemology and theoretical framework that educational researchers have been using. This study is a response to Dervin’s plea (2011) for a change for the qualitative studies on international students’ interculturality. With a Post-structuralist Bourdieuian thinking, I demonstrated how analyzing and providing the researcher’s positionality enhance the understanding towards the unspoken data and its analysis especially for the studies on international students’ identities.

Ingham, Esther. "A Foucauldian phenomenological analysis of psychological challenges experienced following spinal cord injury." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2018. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/a-foucauldian-phenomenological-analysis-of-psychological-challenges-experienced-following-spinal-cord-injury(abe8140c-9683-4584-b53b-10d081902977).html.

Abstract:
This study explores potential therapeutic needs of people who have recently incurred a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and consequently live with an acquired disability. There are currently more people living with SCI than ever, yet there is still apparently little awareness or understanding of the complexity of the many potential psychological challenges caused by the injury. Despite disability being an inevitable part of existence, it is not consistently theoretically conceptualized other than to involve issues of power and vulnerability, and therapeutic literature relating to physical disability is scant. An inductive approach to the study was taken in order to focus on personal experiences of SCI, and more than one epistemological framework is mobilized in order to more comprehensively understand issues relating to disability and SCI. Using the (apparently conflicting) works of Foucault and Merleau-Ponty to inform a discourse analysis, both the cultural and historical social constructions, and the phenomenologically embodied aspects of disability are balanced to create a more holistic understanding of the experiences of acquired disability as a result of SCI. Seven participants were recruited for the study from an NHS specialist Spinal Injury Unit. Semi-structured interviews were conducted twice - once whilst participants were in-patients of the Unit, and once soon after they had been discharged. The main body of analysis is divided into three thematic sections: the Ecological - focusing on the roles of power relationships, institutions and culture through language and behavior, The Phenomenological - identifying the body as the primary site of 'knowing-in-the-world' and the implications to the sense of self of altered bodily experiences as a result of a new physicality, and The Existential - exploring how SCI can force a reconsideration of the possible significance or purpose(meaning) to be found in living. Trauma is acknowledged but not addressed as a primary focus, while the temporal element to the experience of SCI is identified. Focusing on the recently injured person's perspective at two significant points post-injury, this study aims to challenge the static concept of disability, and reconceptualise it as something experienced as fluid and context-dependent. The importance and affect of reflexivity in the study is also explored, as well as issues/implications of researcher positioning. The inter-relatedness of identified dominant themes is discussed in an attempt to illustrate the complex fluid interactions between SCI/acquired disability and individual life contexts. Identified themes are developed using critical disability theory, feminist literature, disability studies and Buddhist thought in order to advance understanding and conceptualisation of disability and the psychological experience of SCI. Education and reflexive awareness particularly regarding the machinations of widespread and embedded power relations relating to disability, as well as their consequences, are indicated as ethically necessary requirements (as an issue of social justice) for counselling psychologists to be able to practice appropriately, Ultimately, it is hoped that by investigating accounts of what affected individuals feel the dominant psychological challenges and difficulties are within their first year of injury, it may be possible for therapeutic services to become more effectively tailored to their specific needs.

Georgescu, Andreea S. M. Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Inventory positioning in modern retail." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/130727.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Operations Research Center, February, 2021<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 119-122).<br>Modern retail has been significantly affected by the surge in online platforms and product options. Customers have comfortably settled into an omni-channel model, in which they buy different products through different channels. While customers expect a seamless process in getting the products they are looking for, they are also more influenced by the selection offered when unsure of what to buy. For retailers, the transition to omnichannel means more complex problems of inventory positioning and demand fulfillment, but also an opportunity to influence their customers through the assortments they offer, especially online. In this thesis, we study two main challenges related to inventory positioning in omni-channel and provide new models and algorithms. First, we study the problem of choice modeling and assortment optimization. Choice models aim to capture customer preferences across products and have been extensively studied.<br>Whereas numerous models have been proposed, few are tractable, and many have been shown to be limited in capturing customer preferences, due to their underlying assumptions on consumer behavior. In the first part of this thesis, we introduce a new class of models, which we call synergistic, and show both theoretically and empirically, that these models dominate all existing ones in capturing consumer preferences. We show the associated optimization problems for the synergistic models are NP-hard, but provide IP-based algorithms, which are reasonably tractable in practice. Finally, we show that these models can be represented as ReLU activated neural networks. Therefore, state of the art methods in the neural networks field can be leveraged to efficiently estimate these models and optimize over them, to inform assortment optimization decisions.<br>In the second part of the thesis, we focus on inventory planning for a physical retailer, considering the complex dynamics in the store involving the backroom, and the need to minimize its use. The question is motivated by our collaborator, a large US retail chain, striving to leverage their store assets as shipping hubs. We present a case study of working with real data to understand the complexities of this question and identify steps a retailer can take to become leaner.<br>by Andreea Georgescu.<br>S.M.<br>S.M. Abstract:
The goal of the Internet of Things’ sensing technology is to provide LBS(location-based services); a key technology is finding out how to positioning the sensing devices. For positioning outdoors, mature tech-nology such as GPS and cellular network location can be used. There is little research about indoor positioning, and there is no finished product on the market. This paper shows how to use both Wi-Fi and ZigBee signal for position-ing; Wi-Fi to find the area position and ZigBee to find the coordinate position. The main contribution of this paper is described in the follow-ing: This paper will present an algorithm using kNN on a Wi-Fi signal, as a way to find the location area of users. The GPS signal cannot be used indoors, but there are usually numerous Wi-Fi signals, that can be used for indoor positioning. In this design, to build a dataset containing the number of locations and the Wi-Fi signal strength list of each location. When indoor positioning is needed, the KNN algorithm is used to compare the user’s Wi-Fi signal strength with the dataset and find the location number. When precise positioning is needed, the ZigBee signal should be used. In this paper two different methods for precise positioning in are used, one is an improved algorithm of triangle centroid algorithm where the positioning accuracy depends on the number of anchor points and the interval of each point. The other method is the neural network method. This method could give stable result with only four anchor points. Finally, there is a comparison of the methods mentioned in this paper : the Wi-Fi fingerprint method, the ZigBee triangle centroid algorithm, and neural network method.

Black, S. "Illumination through illustration : positioning illustration as practice-led research." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2014. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/23970/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis represents a practice-led enquiry into contemporary illustration from a UK perspective. This thesis argues for illustration to be recognised as an inductive practice-led research process, within both education and developing criticism. The methods and methodological discussion to support this are derived from the practical aspect of the enquiry. The inductive approach outlined through the methods chapter focuses on the benefits of removing the known outcome from projects, and of illustrators maintaining their own practice alongside commissioned work. The discussion of methods proposes that the commissioned strand of illustration adopts research in illustration as research for illustration. The discussion of performative forms adopted within illustration contributes to the discourse surrounding practice-led research outcomes, in particular Brad Haseman’s performative paradigm for creative arts research. The methodological approach is proposed as a supplementary strand of teaching, which equips illustrators with long-term skills to generate their own projects and employment. These enable illustrators to be flexible and able to adapt to economic and technological changes to industry practice. The thesis examines research processes within illustration which are transferable to different contexts. These include the increase in digital screens and their time-based communications, and the development of three-dimensional objects and environments within the field. The practical work undertaken employed these processes and generated a contribution to the growing discourse surrounding contemporary illustration in the UK. Illustration suffers from a lack of published analysis and as a result its critical discourse is limited. Therefore this study bases its argument upon themes identified within existing illustration commentary, the work of key practitioners, and my studio practice. The focus of research undertaken is mainly on self-initiated projects, but includes commissions where the outcome is not prescribed from the outset. Conversations with Matthew Richardson, Luise Vormittag, Steve Braund, Andrzej Klimowski and Henrik Drescher provide supplementary primary research. The outcome is a contribution to the development of a critical framework derived from practice, which acknowledges the shortcomings of existing frameworks available. The thesis proposes that the concept of time be adopted as a key characteristic of illustration, the discussion of which references Henri Bergson, comics and artist’s books. The utility of time lies in its productive application to both the production and analysis of work. Illustration’s unique negotiation of time through spatial manifestations is used to situate the field in relation to key shifts within culture such as Fredric Jameson’s postmodernism and Nicolas Bourriaud’s altermodernism. The thesis outlines the diversity of temporal achievements within illustration in this regard, and calls for greater recognition of illustration practice and discourse within such discussions of the time we live in.

Abstract:
<p> Young people who are homeless or runaway encounter numerous barriers in obtaining an education (Milner,2013). Concurrently, their schooling experiences have been restricted by neoliberal policy initiatives that have muted investments in building an engaged US citizenry, moving curriculum from content to skill-based learning (Au, 2013). Since civic opportunities for young adults in marginalized communities are not often available and unevenly distributed across social class and race/ethnicity (Ginwright, 2010), participants and I co-created a youth activism club with participants to gain a fuller, more nuanced understanding of the intersection of literacies, civic engagement, and homeless urban youth aged 16-23. </p><p> This study draws upon positioning theory and narrative inquiry and works to uncover the ways young people of color who frequented the Scope Resource Center (SRC) for Homeless and Runaway Youth positioned themselves towards critical literacies and as activists in their communities. </p><p> Primary findings indicate examinations of power structures morphed as participants expanded critical thinking outwardly over time, moving from micro, through mezzo, and into macro level questioning. Participants engaged in dialogue around texts resulting in intertextual multiliterate positioning and associations were made between critical YA texts and embodied civic action, enabling participants to position themselves as cultural critics and resisters of the status quo. Data suggests established adolescent civic engagement indicators (Flanagan &amp; Levine, 2010) need to be adapted and expanded to include indicators linked to new literacies and online spaces that helped participants position themselves as active, engaged citizens.</p><p>

Abstract:
Measurement of residual stress using neutron or synchrotron diffraction relies on the accurate alignment of the sample in relation to the gauge volume of the instrument. Automatic sample alignment can be achieved using kinematic models of the positioning system provided the relevant kinematic parameters are known, or can be determined, to a suitable accuracy. The main problem addressed in this thesis is improving the repeatability and accuracy of the sample positioning for the strain scanning, through the use of techniques from robotic calibration theory to generate kinematic models of both off-the-shelf and custom-built positioning systems. The approach is illustrated using a positioning system in use on the ENGIN-X instrument at the UK’s ISIS pulsed neutron source comprising a traditional XYZΩ table augmented with a triple axis manipulator. Accuracies better than 100microns were achieved for this compound system. Although discussed here in terms of sample positioning systems these methods are entirely applicable to other moving instrument components such as beam shaping jaws and detectors. Several factors could lead to inaccurate positioning on a neutron or synchrotron diffractometer. It is therefore essential to validate the accuracy of positioning especially during experiments which require a high level of accuracy. In this thesis, a stereo camera system is developed to monitor the sample and other moving parts of the diffractometer. The camera metrology system is designed to measure the positions of retroreflective markers attached to any object that is being monitored. A fully automated camera calibration procedure is developed with an emphasis on accuracy. The potential accuracy of this system is demonstrated and problems that limit accuracy are discussed. It is anticipated that the camera system would be used to correct the positioning system when the error is minimal or notify the user of the error when it is significant.

Osigwelem, Kenneth Ugochukwu. "Exploring the application of profile theory based strategy for managing talent positioning in a Nigerian Higher Education Institution." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2017. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/8564/.

Full text
Abstract:
Brain drain has been the main cause of academic staff attrition in Nigeria Higher Education Institutions which results in talent void. This circumstance has left HEIs to grapple with the challenge of managing the consequences of talent void among faculty in areas of course/module allocation, project supervision and recruitment of new talents to fill the vacuum occasioned by brain drain. This loss of experienced academics remains a challenge to institutions of higher learning in particular and often culminates in disruptive academic service delivery. In a proactive approach to manage the fallouts of talent void in HEIs, this research proposes a talent management strategy based on application of Profile theory to manage talent positioning in a higher education institution in Nigeria in order to cope with evolving workforce. The research specifically had its focus on three scenarios; talent recruitment, project supervision, and course/module allocation. The research used a mixed method of inquiry involving five departments in a single institution in which two sets of data were collected. The first set of data collection involved survey using questionnaire and interview. While simple descriptive statistics was used in analysing the questionnaire, Soft System Methodology was used in interpreting and analysing the qualitative data in order to gain rich contextual understanding of the problem situation. The second set of data collection involved anonymous artefact representing candidates’ attributes used for modelling candidates profile for capability and compatibility. The profile theory based talent management strategy was developed and evaluated using Importance-Satisfaction analysis model. Specifically, profile theory modelled candidates’ characteristics/attributes for talent identification and made distinctive talent identification where ties occurred based on capability and compatibility This research contributes to body of knowledge in two ways. First, it demonstrates how Talent Management approach can mitigate the impact of brain drain and other forms of employee turnover in HEI. Second, it also explores and demonstrates how profile theory tool can be applied in filling talent void and allocation of duties as a strategy for talent positioning within academic roles in a HEI.

Abstract:
AbstractResearcher positionality has gained increased attention in recent years, and music education is following suit. Carrying out research that addresses diversity in music education demands a high level of reflexivity and a problematising of one’s own position as researcher. This chapter offers critical insights into the complexity of such a positioning and how research practices might reflect, confirm and/or disrupt the existing ‘body politic’ that our bodies signify. Researcher positionality is here examined in terms of pregnancy within a research project based at an asylum seeker accommodation centre. Applying a Butlerian lens to the examination, the chapter uncovers how the researcher’s pregnant body was ‘performed’ and became the main focus of ‘recognition’ amongst the people encountered at the centre. These processes of ‘performing’ and being ‘recognised’ as a ‘pregnant researcher’ manifested in various ways such as gaining access, credibility, trust, relationships, ethical considerations and power. Thus, the chapter opens a space to reflect critically on researcher positionality and specifically its influence on the research process in sites that seek to understand diversity in music education.

Abstract:
The adaptronic precision positioning technology is applied to the fitting of rotation-symmetric components such as gearwheels in a hard turning process in order to compensate eccentricity. Distorted gearwheels, showing e.g. a significant quench distortion, cause a malposition in the chuck during clamping. This malposition leads to low quality workpieces or scrap in the hard turning process. To compensate the malposition of the workpieces, a new technology for precision positioning within the rotating chuck is being researched. In the introduction, the motivation of the preceding research project “Allowance-oriented precision positioning” and the framework of the adaptronic precision positioning technology are summarized. Next part is the description of the system’s components, beginning with the principles and the redesign of the mechatronic chuck. Completing the adaptronic precision positioning technology, the optical metrology, the data processing and automation aspects are shown in the following part. Afterwards, a short summary concludes this paper.
