Full textIn recent years, in the European Union, migration of workers has increased considerably due to the opening of the Schengen area. Subsequently, many families are leaving Romania to work and live in Spain. The region of Castellón registers surprising numbers: 10% of the population is Romanian. Through what processes have these migration waves been built? The thesis proposes a reflection on family and individual modes of insertion of Romanians in the province of Castellón. The development of religious and family networks explains the continued growth of migrant flow from Romania to Spain. The notion of the path of migration allows observation of the complexity of the situation of migrants. Real territorial integration strategies can be analyzed. The entry integration of Romania into the European Union imposes a rethinking and a reinterpretation of the migration process. New concepts such as concurrency, glocalization, transnationalism allows for a reinterpretation of migration networks. The strategies adopted by families to ensure their survival are continually updated, as imposed by the current economic crisis in Spain

Full textThis PHD study bring to light heterogeneity of careers concealed by the category of "unaccompanied migrant minor", but also the strength of relationships wich put around their projects, before their departure and into reception societies. This study, realized in Lille and Brussels, show that young unaccompanied minor's career grows in connection with their social and family relations. It also evolves with constraints and/or opportunities (economical, political, institutional and family opportunities) met on the way in immigration or transit countries. Their stories bring also to light learning productions over migration roads, and "tips" transmitted in different circulation and/or installation territories. Language and adaptation abilities, information searches, network creations, are so many trainings that appear in the course of stories related; knowledge build in informal way, before their departure and through chance meetings, but also in connection with social work institutions. Whether they are supervised by institution in regular way or not, these young migrants remain however under the State influence and they are forced to organize their life around papers search, and fear of deportation

Full textThe Iraqi exodus, continuing since the 1991 Gulf War, has generated new forms of migration, namely transit migration. Turkey is one of the countries which has been transformed into a "zone of passage" for Iraqi exiles. This thesis examines the social networks of the Iraqi transit migrants in Ista. I1bul, particularly the Iraqi Christians, of whom the majority are Chaldean Catholics. Their prolonged stay, which extends up to 10 years in some cases, leads to the construction of specific networks that play a critical roIe in the migratory process of this "community en route". The thesis takes into account other Iraqi groups too, such as the Turkmens and the Kurds, in order to investigate the interaction between migratory networks and state policies. This work also analyzes the capacities and the limits of the transnational networks, particularly religious ones

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to determine the international migratory dynamics in Kaolack under the influence of the local context (quarter of origin). The results indicated that migration relies on economic and sociocultural factors which affect the quarters differently, according to the social cohesion existing in the community. While leaving, the family constitutes an essential resource for the migratory project to be effective. This dimension also works for the accurate welcome of the migrant in the quarters where social relations are weak. Migrants from quarters with very strong community cohesion find in the neighbourhood the necessary supports which enable them to migrate

Full textIn adopting a qualitative and multidisciplinary approach, based on the longitudinal study of the Deir Mqaren’s inhabitants’ circulations – a Syrian village located between Damascus and the Lebanese border – this thesis questions the “reticular” dimension of human mobility. Through refugees’ narratives and the analysis of their migration journeys to Jordan and Germany, its aims to understand the mechanics of refugee flows from Syria. Thus, this research invites the reader to move his focus towards networks of places and actors often considered as being marginal, despite the fact that they form the “backbone” of the roads of exile liking Syria to the rest of the world. By placing the focal point on individuals’ conditions of movement, the intention of this study is to both highlight the continuum existing between pre-conflict economic migration and the logic of the current refugee movements; and show in a tangible way the evolution of the relational mechanisms allowing exiles to access resources (such as information, mobility, housing, employment) despite the structural constraints they are constantly facing on their way towards safe destinations. The graphic representations developed in the framework of this thesis aim to better reflect the mobile, unstable and particularly labile nature of these socio-spatial dynamics

Full textBased on a long-term ethnography in La Chaumière district, this thesis wants to analyse the mahoran migration and the identity construction processes in Reunion island. The mahoran migrants become a challenge for local policies, it poses a question a what place for the mahoran migrants in the reunion society. Starting from a daily observation, these analysis of a delimitated territory – La Chaumière – makes it possible to understand the methods of migration, the adaptation strategies and the emergence of new territorialities of this population who comes from Mayotte Island and Comorian Union to Reunion Island from a departemental point of view. Moreover, this choice to study a group within a territorial framework delimited in a city where local policy tends to develop cultural and religious diversity allows to evaluate the various methods of migratory construction projects and the establishment of these French families from Mayotte Island. Coming from the lastest French department, the majority of its population is Muslim, with some bantu tradition and has massively emigrated in Reunion island since the 2000’s. These migration methods and these adaptation strategies are complex and challenge the cultural and cultual Reunion island cohabitation. A multiculturalism constantly questioned by the living place and unemployment problems, the increase of racist conflicts and speeches, and by the reflection of the reunion identity

Full textThis thesis intends to question the role of ICTs in the evolution of the migration project of the sub-Saharan African migrants in Turkey. The interdisciplinary approach adopted in this thesis allowed to examine the question under sociological and communicational point of view by taking into account the political and geographical aspects. The migration of African sub-Saharan towards Turkey is associated with the reinforcement of controls at the external border, particularly in Europe, which favors the appereance of new migratory roads and new transit hubs. This reinforcement of border controls leads the migrants to reformulate their migration project. In this context of irregular migrations, this thesis intends to understand how the ICTs are appropriated by migrants and what is the role of these technologies in the construction and the maintenance of the social networks

Full textThis thesis describes the organization of migratory networks connecting the province of Boulgou (Burkina Faso) to Italy. Regarding the interactions between a local context, "bisaku", and the social group of "the sons of Italy", it questions a "travelling culture" by discussing, alternately, a framework proposed by the transnational studies and the network's analysis. Anchored on a multi-sited ethnography, it brings to light the redeployment of a circular migration within the frame of a transmigration operated from Ivory Coast towards Italy. This process leads to describe a local society through its multiple locations and more precisely through places representing an African Diaspora that the Burkinabé name as "ghetto". Altough Bisa perceives these camps of agricultural labourers as "etnoscape", the Mafia practices observed in the fields of tomatoes of the region of Pouilles, as that of the "caponeri" show that the agency of African do not resist to the orders of the local context

Full textNearly three million Senegalese population out of twelve million just over, live abroad. Before directed to the former French colonies in Africa and France, for geographical historical and linguistic reasons, Senegalese migration field has become multipolar by the new opportunities offered by the others countries. The Senegalese emigration’s movement has been widened to Arabia and eastern Europe. But the trends show a growing portion of new candidates choose Southern Europe and North America. The profile of Senegalese emigrant to the U.S. is very different at many ways that the migration category in France. Starting in the early 1980s, the emigration of Senegalese in the United States outnumbers that one in France due to the economic and organizational dynamism and better incentive structure. The United States offers more opportunities and fewer constraints for the cultural and economic development to migrants. Women occupy a substantial place in this migration, they are younger and often single at the time of their arrival on American territory. In France, the Senegalese emigration is older but is facing more constraints on the economic, administrative and cultural aspects. Over 70% of the Senegalese France engaged in low skilled, paid jobs and save less than their counterparts located in the United States. Thus, for better success and more coming to their families support in Senegal, many Senegalese, rather that France, choose the United States where they mostly work in commercial activities. The family and economic reasons do not only explain, the emigration of Senegalese because they are not the sole poorest who leave. For these reasons there is "new logic", migration-related globalization. These departures have consequences on Regions starting with the most visible are the remittances from migrants and investment, more or less supervised by state or private structures working with inclusive approach

Full textThe productive restructuring of the paulist industry in the late 1980s has reserved an important place to the migrant labour in the garment sector. The transnational subcontracting circuit has favoured the arrival of mobile workers from neighbouring countries. In the wake of an intensification of this migratory flow at the turn of the 2000s, Bolivians has quickly established themselves as the largest Latin American migrant population in the city of São Paulo. They work in sweatshops, small production structures having the advantage of facilitating social and spatial mobility through careers as migrant entrepreneurs. The conditions of production of the geographical and social space of this migration are put into perspective by identifying the social networks on which the migratory trajectories depend. In order to understand the articulation between networks and mobilities, we start from the observation of the existence of reticular apparatus with variable arrangements that operate as individual migrations matrices and participate in the production of a transnational social space. These reticular apparatus are based either on disposable ties or on family ties or on rural community ties. They reveal circulatory and relational skills involving a capacity for action among the individuals concerned, which contrasts with the representation of "slave labourer" that structure part of the relationship between government and Bolivian migrants

Full textTechnologies are omnipresent in our society, from social media, to satellite television and Internet broadcasting and shape the way we live, work, and interact. It has also transformed the international migration, making it possible for migrants to maintain strong ties between their host society and country of origin. Many studies have been conducted on the usage of ICT by migrants in the host country; however, there is limited research on the use of ICT by refugees during their migratory paths. This study focuses on the analysis of media practices and uses of social media by Somali refugees from Somalia to France (Rennes, Angers and Paris). In addition, this field survey is multi-sited and covers the relationship between the media practices and identity reconstruction of Somalis in two Canadian cities, Ottawa and Toronto. Despite the emergence of studies on the Canadian Somali community, very little research exists on the analysis of media practices Somalis, particularly in the domestic context. The methodological approach used in this study is based on an epistemological posture via the tools of critical ethnography and multi-sited. Critical ethnography aims to address the social and economic inequalities in which Somalis live in France and Canada. The results of this research show that the refugees, who are often labelled as being under-equipped with limited knowledge of computers, know how to use social media (Facebook, Youtube) and instant communication tools (Skype, MSN Messenger,VoIP) and information technologies and communication. We will also see how the collective use of YouTube videos, television and radio by Somalis in Canada and France has a complementary role to that of the institutions responsible for safeguarding the memory and transmission of cultural identity. The production and reception of video, radio and television broadcasts of the Somali community symbolize "traces" or efforts to rebuild Somalia. Through detailed analysis of media practices in the context of migration, this study seeks to contribute to the advancement of knowledge on the use of ICT by Somali refugees

Full textThis doctoral dissertation explores, from a subjective point of view, the illegal migration experiences of young Algerians aged under thirty. This phenomenon, which primarily results from personal choice and individual decisions, intrinsically linked to the context of their departure, is analyzed within the framework of a collective social configuration which is engaged in a process of difficult and selective illegal mobility. From the perspective of comprehensive sociology, this research analyzes the social bond that ties, in time and space, migrants involved in illegal migration networks, in order to approach, through their backgrounds and experiences, their organizational and survival strategies in France. The purpose of this research is therefore is therefore to analytically evaluate the strength of the social networks underlying illegal migration and illegal migrants' ability to act in the context of increasingly restrictive migration. Thus, the analysis of social bonds in the process of illegal migration process sheds light on the ways in which the interweaving and adjustments of social bonds, assembled in relationships of solidarity and reciprocity, ensure invisibility and survival. Finally, young Algerians' experience of illegal migration, which is primarily an experience of individual emancipation, autonomization and up-ward social mobility, is a challenge for European migration policies that are at odds with the logic of illegal migrants

Full textThis dissertation presents three studies on migration. Chapter 2 examines the impact of migrant networks on the decision to migrate of Senegalese. Both family and community networks seem to positively affect migration, but the former appear to be destination-specific while the latter are not. Networks are also found more useful to women, and those households that are most deprived of socio-economic capital. In chapter 3, I study the influence of migrant networks in destination countries (France and Italy) on remittances behavior of Senegalese migrants. An illustrative model emphasizes the double nature of the network (supplier of services to the migrant, means of communitation), that seems to be exploited by the origin household to control part of migrants' remittances. Ln chapter 4, I use Mexican panel data to compare individuals' intentions to migrate to the materialization of their plans, in order to shed a new Iight on the two-stage selection process of Mexican migrants. The classical Roy model of self selection is here adapted to intentions to migrate. Under the assumption that intentions are rational, different motives for the non-materialization of migration plans are empirically explored: exogenous shocks or omitted constraints. Estimation results show that climatic shocks (rainfall, hurricanes) affect the probability to migrate. However, some constraints, in particular due to gender, seem to predominate: women are found to migrate less, conditional on their initial intentions

Full textThe choice of the Brittany can be a surprise when it is a question of treating Italian migrations. The foreigners always formed in the region a relatively minority group, theItalians including. Nevertheless we observe from the second half of the 19th century on the whole Breton territory, the constitution of long-lasting migrant networks, always perceptible today. What reasons urged these transalpine migrants to put down their suitcases if far from the important Italian communities established in the Southeast of France or the Parisian East? Beyond a reflection on the modalities of the setting-up of an Italian population in the department, it will be a question of wondering about the career of the migrants and more particularly about the strategies implemented to "become integrated" into the local microcosms. Through the memory narratives collected with families stemming from the Italian immigration, we shall try to understand how the migratory act of the ancestor impact on the identical reorganizations of the descendants

Full textThe dissertation deals with the ongoing migration system developed in northern America between Mexico and the United States. Based on the analysis of the spatial spreading of the phenomenon, and the social process that makes it possible in variable conditions, the migration field is sawn as a complex system in which are connected people circulation, goods exchange and cultural interpenetration between the different poles of the moving. In a first part, we consider the geographical dynamics of the migration system at different scales in the two countries. The simultaneous processes of migrants concentration and spreading are studied in parallel with the urbanization and channelization of the migration flows. To do so, we put the emphasis on departure and settlement places as well as relay places and international itineraries. In a second part, we examine the strategies designed by the migrants, differing protagonists of the migration act, along two dimensions: 1) we consider the social networks built in the migration experience as the active structures of the mobility system; 2) then we look upon the different flows (material and immaterial) that circulate between departure and settlement places as the dynamic vectors of the international migration field. In a third part, the previous findings lead to a reflection on the construction, in the transnational space of mobility, of an original social link and a specific relation to the territory. From the question of the community dimensions of migration process, we discuss the pertinence of considering transnational network territories as meaning entities for the migrant groups

Full textA better knowledge of the migratory strategies at species, population and individual levels should facilitate the identification of limiting factors and challenges faced by migrants. Catharus thrushes from eastern North America appear to follow the Atlantic migration corridor to reach their wintering grounds further south in the fall. Until recently, technologies did not allow us to determine the differences between species, populations and individuals at a greater resolution. This study compares the individual fall migration strategies of the Swainson’s Thrush, the Bicknell's Thrush and the Gray-cheeked Thrush using a coordinated radio-telemetry network, which receiving stations are deployed in eastern Canada and the United States. Migration routes, migration paces, and individual variability were analyzed. The Swainson's Thrush migrated further west along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes than Bicknell's Thrush and Gray-cheeked Thrush, which migrated along the Atlantic coast. Stopovers by the three species appeared more frequent on the southeastern United States than further North. However, Gray-cheeked Thrushes migrated faster than the other two species. Conspecifics exhibited significant individual variability (> 10 degrees) in maximum migration longitude. From a conservation perspective, these differences could translate into different stakes depending on species, populations and regions. The results of this study illustrate in a new way the versatility of migration strategies within species with similar ecological characteristic, and will benefit from being integrated into synthesis efforts aiming a deeper knowledge of the issues related to bird migration.

Full textThe object of our study is the condition of unaccompanied underage Albanians citizens in Italy. Italian law defines the “unaccompanied underage immigrant” a minor that does not have Italian nor any other European countries' citizenship, did not apply for asylum, and is in Italy without the assistance and legal representation of parents or any other adults legally responsible for her/him. We conducted a qualitative research adopting a comprehensive method that aims at exploring the complexity of expectations, strategies, developments and experiences of a kind of migrants that have the specificity of being underage and unattended by parents. Through semi-structured personal interviews we explored the following themes: living conditions and expectations before leaving, motivations for leaving, management of the journey, executing the migration project and its form, present situation and project for the future, relation with the family and its role in the migration. Starting for the observation that perception of reality is strongly conditioned by television messages, we hypothesized a relation between access to Italian network in the family in Albania, and the expectations of the studied population. The study highlights specific social, cultural and economic contexts of deprivation that lead to the choice of migrate. These contexts are characterized by a scarcity of economic resources, formative and employment possibilities, as well as the inadequacy of the socialization process and the possibility of playing and enjoying life. We also suggest that access to the Italian television has a fundamental role in shaping adolescents' expectations, affecting their decision to migrate

Full textThis thesis proposes a study on the migration of the Senegalese students in France. Indeed the phenomenon of the student's migration found its importance in the process of the international migrations. Thus of many work were realized in this field in particular in the United States, contrary in France, especially with regard to the migration of the foreign students of the countries in the process of development and SenegaI in particular where the studies rare and are especially made theses prepared by the nationals of the country of the foreign students to study. The disciplines which study this phenomenon often find being, sociology, the history, sciences of education, psychology, and the studies linguistic. Within the framework of our doctorate we thought that this phenomenon could also be studied by the geography, by stressing space. But within the framework of our analyses the contribution of the other disciplines in this field were requested. For a good comprehension of our subject we analyzed, on the one hand the determining factors of this migration of the Senegalese students in France, through the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the students, and the conditions of stay of the Senegalese students through, housing, the administrative approaches, and integration. ln addition, to wonder about becoming to it socio-professional of this category of qualified migrants making the difference with the Senegalese migrants not-qualified, through: an analysis of the phenomenon of the "brain drain" and insertion of the graduate Senegalese students in France who turn over in their country of origin. This thesis makes it possible to include/understand this phenomenon which became important extensive as from 1998 in SenegaI. And will bring authorities Senegalese to change methods which is in place to support the retum of the Senegalese students, which more is to integrate them in development projects inside the country, to support a certain economic balancing in Senegal

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to rebuild the generative sequences of migrant behaviors in contexts given. I concentrated the work of analysis on two groups of migrants of Italian origin: the Piedmontese one and Sicilians. I thus detailed the differences between immigration "of proximity" (Piedmontese) and "long distance" (Sicilian). Does an old or recent presence in immigration country determine perceptions different from the migrants in the host countries? Which are the effects on their trajectories? The questions which this work seeks to answer relate to the role of the migrations for the various actors. 1 wanted to adopt plural - the Italian migrations - in order to highlight this aspect often little underlined by work on "Italian immigration" in France, but which can help to include/understand the migratory processes more finely, bonds with the place of origin, as well as insertion in the immigration countries. 1 tackled these questions by the means of the family trajectories, in order to include/understand the genesis of the migrations. I wanted to privilege processual, dynamic dimension and history of the migratory phenomenon, in order to show the gropings, uncertainties and the reversaIs of trajectories certainly individual, but inserted in an intersection of relations which leave the village of origin to extend to the international level

Full textThis thesis addresses the effects of the conflict between migration dynamics and the dynamics of border enforcement. The study focuses on the flow of Central American migrants heading to the United States. This flow follows a system of borders formed by a buffer zone throughout Mexican territory and a strip of land erected as a high-tech rampart on the southern border of the United States. Across this immense space, the border has created margins that migrants try to circumvent by entering an underground economy structured around the abuse on clandestine migrants in transit. The analysis of the migratory system of a village in Guatemalan highlands shows how the migration flow persists, despite the border, through the action in network of migrants. The comparison of about thirty experiences of men and women in clandestine movements reveals that the border affects the various actors in specific ways, depending on their gender as well as their social, economic and mobility resources. Migrants experience the border as a space of adversity to which they must constantly adapt to, by assuming it integrally, in order to be able to continue their journey to the place they imagine northward. This work, based on field investigations conducted between 2005 and 20012 during different stages of the migratory process (e.g. in places of origin, transit and destination) seeks to illustrate how a migration flow and its actors react to a contemporary system of borders

Full textThis thesis studies the crossed spaces, the waiting spaces and the spaces inhabited by Colombian men and women throughout their migratory journey to France, and once they are in Paris. The thesis is supported by an ethnographic research between 2009 and 2014 in France and Colombia. This multi-sited ethnography showed that the circulation of migrants who have left Colombia can be fragmented and interrupted. The trajectories of migrants are far from being linear and fluid; they are crossed by ruptures, bifurcations and expectations that escape the control of the actors. The research shows that in face of external difficulties, the individual and collective practice of "rebusque" (resourcefulness) imbricated in transnational social networks, favor the reorientation of migratory projects and the circulation of actors from one side of the Atlantic to the other. These networks are usually made up of family members, but also of graduate students, refugees, passers-by (“tramitadores”), or travelers who try to cross borders and meet in a rapid and random manner. The research also showed that the representations and social practices of the migrants produce ephemeral or lasting mutations of the Parisian spaces. The culinary culture, for example, on which rests a formal and informal economy, is materialized in everyday urban spaces (restaurants and shops in the Père Lachaise or Batignolles neighborhoods), as well as sporadic events (political celebrations, sports tournaments in Vincennes forest). The analysis confirms the major role of migrants in the morphological transformations of a neighborhood, in the aspect of a street, or in the uses of a place of entertainment; from this point of view, the anthropologist can consider them as architects of their migratory landscapes

Full textThis thesis analyzes the migration policy recruitment of skilled immigrants, led by the Canadian province of Quebec and the Brazilian community in this French-speaking province. For this, the concept of diaspora has been used as an analytical model of the formation of the immigrant community in a non-traditional installation area. Initially this work presents the history of this province and the development of thematic and linguistic migration and the role of migration policies that led to the autonomy of the province in the recruitment and selection of its economic immigrants using the points system. Then, the main characteristics of Brazilian communities in major country of installation are presented in order to place the issue of Brazilian emigration as a contemporary phenomenon. It is shown how, since the 1980s, this movement, previously residual, has become so prevalent in Brazilian culture. Then, the concept of diaspora is introduced to show the Brazilian emigration as a diaspora. Subsequently, this work presents, analyzes and discusses the migration of Brazilians under this prism through semi-structured interviews, with institutional and formal means, as well as non-institutional and informal to be here and there that are widely used. It highlights the role of virtual social networks in the process, in their migration history and the formation of community. It is shown that these Brazilians, when leaving their country, were looking for a certain quality of life and social guarantees that in Brazil they believed to be excluded
