This thesis investigates the influence of niche specialisation on floristic composition and species distributions of the family Dipterocarpaceae along topographic gradients at two contrasting lowland Mixed Dipterocarp Forest sites in Brunei Darussalam: Andulau (overlying nutrient-poor sandy soils) and Belalong (overlying nutrient-rich clay soils). Dipterocarp tree density, species richness and diversity were higher at Andulau than Belalong, and were also higher on ridges than in slopes and valleys. Recent research has suggested that apparently undisturbed tropical forests, remote from areas of deforestation or other significant human influences, are undergoing unexpected changes. These observed changes may already be having significant impacts on terrestrial carbon stocks, fluxes, and biodiversity. However, the findings have proved controversial, partly because a rather limited number of permanent sample plots (PSPs) have been monitored for short periods.

<p>Amazonia contains the largest remaining tracts of undisturbed tropical forest on earth, and is thus critical to international nature conservation and carbon sequestration efforts. Amazonian forests are notoriously difficult to study, however, due to their species richness and inaccessibility. This has limited efforts to produce the accurate, high-resolution biodiversity maps needed for conservation and development. The aims of the research described here were to identify efficient solutions to the problems of tropical forest inventory; to use these methods to identify floristic patterns and

This study examines the effect fallback foods, foods eaten when other, more preferred foods are scarce, have on the tool-using behaviors of capuchin monkeys. In the arid Serra da Capivara National Park in Brazil, black-striped capuchins (Cebus libidinosus) use stone tools to dig for underground tubers, a very rare behavior among primates. I test the hypothesis that the capuchins in the Serra da Capivara exploit tubers as a fallback food because palm nuts, an important fallback resource to other groups of capuchins living in arid environments, are either rare or absent there.
