The therapeutic success of peripheral B-cell depletion strategies in MS patients has identified B cells as important contributors to new relapsing disease activity in the periphery. However, they may also drive the CNS-compartmentalized inflammatory processes thought to underlie the chronic-progressive stages of disease. The long-term persistence of plasma cells in the CNS of MS patients, and cellular aggregates rich in B cells, T cells and FDC-like cells that have recently been identified in the meningeal compartment, suggest the inflamed MS CNS may be a B-cell fostering environment. Non-resident fathers are considered by the Irish State to be fulfilling their financial responsibility to their children by paying child support. However, previous Irish evidence would suggest that men make low levels of provision and that compliance rates are poor. This had led to the view that many separated men are "feckless" and care little for their children's welfare. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the experiences and views of nonresident fathers in Ireland with regard to child support and to establish the implications for Irish child support policy. The majority of children in the UK live in households with two parents, yet most of the academic research on parenting focuses on the relationship between one parent and one child. More often than not, this one parent has been the mother. There is an expectation of father involvement in contemporary parenting, but the literature still tends to emphasise parenting as a one parent-one child interaction, measuring involvement of the father in terms of time spent with his child.
