Bradley, Catherine McCarthy 1953. "Attitudes of Verde Valley residents toward the presence of National Park Service units in the area." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278032.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine attitudes of Verde Valley residents toward the presence of National Park Service (NPS) units in the area. The study area is largely undeveloped rural land which includes a perennial riparian expanse along the Verde River in central Arizona. Three National Park Service units protect significant local archaeological relics. The general public and local land use decision makers were polled, using random mail surveys and telephone interviews, to determine local values toward economic, visual, cultural, historic and natural resource issues. Responses from each group were compiled and compared for similarities and significant divergence. Results indicate this is a fairly satisfied community which highly values local natural and scenic resources but values the cultural/historic resources to a lesser degree. Results also indicate a lack of association between the relationship of the Verde River and other natural resources with the presence of NPS units.

Wallace, Peggy. "Earth Sheltered Housing in Warren County, Kentucky: Description of Housing Units & Determinants of Residents' Satisfaction." TopSCHOLAR®, 1988. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2944.

Full text
Abstract:
The known population of earth sheltered houses in Warren County, Kentucky were studied (a) to document building materials and techniques utilized, (b) to describe the residents demographically and document their attitudes regarding satisfaction with earth sheltered housing, and (c) to determine reasons for building and resources utilized in financing and planning, as well as problems encountered in regard to the earth sheltered house. Data on 21 housing units were collected through personal interviews. Data analysis was accomplished using contingency tables, chi-squares, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and multiple stepwise regression. The earth sheltered house found to provide residents with high satisfaction was generally a chambered elevational structure which had cast-in-place concrete walls at the earth contact points with an exposed wood frame roof and a concrete floor. Amounts of soil coverage on the exterior varied, as did the use of insulation below grade. Waterproofing systems usually included drainage tile, swale(s), plastic sheeting, and a built-up asphalt or pitch coating applied to the exterior walls. A wood stove and central heating system were the most frequently used sources of heat. Air conditioning was utilized by most residents in the summer, although a window air conditioning unit often provided adequate cooling of the entire house. Ventilation was not a concern and dehumidification was seldom a concern for the residents. All 19 original owners (90% of the house owners in the study) acted as their own contractors, hiring professionals for such tasks as soil testing and subcontracting, and most reported no difficulty with financing and planning the earth sheltered house. Information on building the earth sheltered house was most often obtained from family and friends. The most common reasons for choosing this housing alternative were energy conservation and low cost. Resident satisfaction was high for most aspects of the earth sheltered house included in the study. All residents reported high overall satisfaction with the earth sheltered house and most of the housing systems investigated. Significant (p < .01) contributors to residents' computed total satisfaction score (TSS) were satisfaction with lack of mildew and satisfaction with natural lighting in the house (90% of variance explained). The addition of satisfaction with lack of condensation on windows, satisfaction with exterior appearance, and satisfaction with performance of the waterproofing system to the regression equation brought the explained variance to 98%. Significant (p < .01) to residents' self-reported overall satisfaction with their earth sheltered houses were satisfaction with heating and cooling expenses and satisfaction with interior surface temperature (59% variance explained). None of the other variables, housing related or demographic, added significantly to explained variance in the TSS or self-reported overall satisfaction with earth sheltered housing.

Nunn, Kathleen Susan English. "The visiting spouses of extended care unit residents : an exploratory study of their experience." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25729.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focussed on the non-institutionalized spouses of extended care unit (ECU) residents using the UBC Model for Nursing as the conceptual framework. The purpose was to elicit the visiting spouses' perceptions of the impact on their lives of having a spouse in an ECU, the coping behaviours they used, and the factors influencing or determining their coping behaviours. Data were collected through relatively unstructured interviews with nine visiting spouses. The three women and six men were married to disabled spouses who had lived in the ECU for an average of three years. Data analysis proceeded through the constant comparative method. Participants saw their spouses' institutionalization as part of a process of change beginning before the actual admission. The impact of having a spouse in an ECU was felt by participants as one of enduring loneliness and continuing preoccupation with their disabled spouses. Loneliness was interpreted to arise from the absence of intimacy in their lives and their preoccupation, from continuing caring for and attachment to their disabled spouses. The participants described a variety of coping behaviours and influencing factors. These were clustered around four aspects of their lives: the disabled spouse; painful emotions; the roles formerly performed by the disabled spouse; and social participation. Three core concepts emerged from the data. These were: perceiving mutuality in interactions with their disabled spouses; humanizing the institution; and integrating having a spouse in an ECU into the continuity of their lives. The last core concept had the greatest explanatory power. Nurses can facilitate the development of these three concepts by respecting the individuality of residents and visiting spouses and by ensuring that caring and competent nursing care is provided. Other implications for nursing practice and education as well as suggestions for further research are presented.

St-Martin, Lorraine. "Bereavement : the experience and coping skills of elderly spouses of deceased extended care unit residents." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29702.

Full text
Abstract:
There is little research on the bereavement experience of elderly spouses, and the effects of long-term caregiving on bereavement. This study addresses the experience of bereavement of elderly spouses of Extended Care Unit residents; the coping skills they employ in the early months of bereavement; and the connections between coping and social supports. Interviews were held with 8 elderly male and female bereaved spouses between the ages of 70 and 85. The bereaved respondents were identified by the Social Work Department at several local Extended Care Units. All respondents were known to the social workers who contacted them to request participation in the study. Utilizing a grounded theory approach and qualitative methods, exploratory interviews were carried out in person with respondents. Recorded responses were transcribed and analysed. Content analysis was used to determine emergent themes and categories from the data. The respondents experienced anticipatory grief while their spouses were at the Extended Care Unit. They relied on their religious beliefs, previous activities and social supports during the bereavement period. The respondents desired to keep their spouses at home. Increased home services would have allowed them to do so. Bereavement follow-up and support are needed by this age group. Intervention appears to be as important before bereavement as it is afterwards.

Abstract:

The thesis includes a thematic analysis of some novels written in English language by six women writers of Indian origin, in particular, Jamila Gavin, Rachna Gilmore, Anjali Banerjee, Rukhsana Khan, Ravinder Randhawa and Meera Syal. The first chapter traces the theoretical premises and the methodological framework, defining the genre of children's literature and questioning about its specificity in a postcolonial context. The second chapter is dedicated to the second generation identity issue, in particular on the Indo-British and Indo-Canadian identity definition. The third chapter focuses on the intergenerational dialogue between the protagonists and their grandparents, including the standpoint of those excluded from official history. Furthermore, it analyses the perception of diversity and the self-definition of youth through clothing. The final chapter deals with the definition of identity carried through spaces, places and journeys.

Chua, Merlyn. "Training for Advanced Practice Providers in a Heart Failure Unit." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6187.

Full text
Abstract:
Information from anecdotal interviews at a practicum site indicated a lack of training for advanced practice providers (APPs) in core competencies critical for effective practice in a heart failure (HF) unit. The goal of this project was to assess the APPs' verbal reports and develop HF unit-specific training for APPs. The practice-focused question examined whether unit-specific training for HF APPs improved knowledge and skills in HF management. The Johns Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice model and Knowles's adult learning theory were used to create a survey, a focus group, and a pre/posttest assessment of knowledge and skills gap. Descriptive and inferential statistics could be used to analyze pre/post survey data, and thematic analysis could be used to analyze focus group data. Assessment data could be used to develop a targeted HF program based on identified skill deficiencies. The implications of this project related to social change are the potential to increase APPs' knowledge, job engagement, and retention. The program could affect length of stay and 30-day readmission of patients in the HF unit.

Stedfast, Molly Logan. "Bed Bug Management in Low-Income, Multi-Unit Housing: An Evaluation of Resident Education and Cost-Effective, Minimally Toxic Suppression Methods." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/79560.

Full text
Abstract:
In the United States, we have been battling the bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) resurgence for over ten years. Current treatment methods are labor intensive, time consuming, and very expensive. Many studies have evaluated the efficacy of treatment methods, but few have focused on bed bug suppression in multi-unit housing. Low income, multi-unit housing residents lack basic bed bug knowledge and are particulary vulnerable to bed bug infestations because they are unable to afford conventional treatment. In this study, diatomaceous earth (D.E.), an inexpensive desiccant dust labeled for bed bug control, was evaluated for its efficacy in killing bed bugs, and determined to be successful. A proactive bed bug suppression program that included D.E. was implemented in a low-income housing facility in Harrisonburg, VA. The program consisted of inexpensive, low toxicity, integrated bed bug management methods, including a novel strategy for applying a perimeter barrier of D.E. in apartment units (n = 121). Over the course of one year, both the number of initial infestations and the costs associated with bed bug treatments were reduced. Low-income, multi-unit housing residents (n = 479) from three cities (Harrisonburg and Richmond, VA; New Orleans, LA) were surveyed before and after an educational seminar to assess their bed bug. After attending the seminar, residents (n = 112) significantly improved (P < 0.0001) their bed bug knowledge, and were able to correctly answer more bed bug-related questions than they had before the educational seminar.

RENARD, ROBERT. "Etude economique juridique et psycho-sociologique sur une residence du troisieme-age : l'unite-retraite." Paris 8, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988PA080305.

Abstract:
This thesis is only treating about pensioners, ex executives and former acting executives and learned professions. These pensioners have deliberately chosen a very special way of life different from the way of the majority, who like almost all inquiries show is very psychologically bound to her home. For the life in unite-retraite, it is necessary to buy or to hire a room flat. More over the providing of some services as lunch and diner, housework, medical care,. . . Lays down in the agreement. Does the unite-retraite represent a particuliar need of the executives? can we consider that it is the demonstration? is the juridical and legal framework for this new form of property well adapted to the real situation of the pensioners? it is necessary to persere in that way and to promote such a policy of so specific buildings, for senior citizens? what are ways of living in the which are proposed and leved through? finally are we not, as for others private life parts, face to face with a world where totalitarian outlines are shining through?

Abstract Study Number: M10461008 Total Pages: 91pages School Name: National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Department of Social Work Graduation Time and Summary: Year 105, Second Semester, Masters Degree. Graduate Student: Chen Shu Chen Instructor: Lee,Sang-Hou- Abstract: The main focus of this research is to explore the situation of new resident homecare workers. The purpose of this study is: Research motivation and background: Taiwan is facing the impacts of an aging society and sub-replacement fertility; currently, there are five people need to provide care to one older adult on average. Taiwan will become a super-aged society in 2025, and the disabled population will increase from the current 755,000 people to 1,000,000 people (Reports from the Ministry of the Interior, Department of Statistics, Taiwan, 2014). With the influences of globalization, the migration of transnational human labor has become a common phenomenon (Hsu, 2014). In Taiwan, nearly half of the population involved in transnational migration has been women in recent years; those needing to temporarily leave their home countries to work in other countries are called “female migrant workers” in general (Oishi, 2005; quoted from Hsu, 2014). The researcher of this study had served as a home care supervisor at a private institution. Among the home care attendants that the researcher was in charge of supervising, seven to eight of them were new residents from China who had married Taiwanese men. Although the new residents from China and iv Taiwanese people share the same culture and language, their lifestyle, dietary habits, and language differ slightly from those in Taiwan. China has many administrative provinces, and its extensive land area and diversified dietary habits, climates, and cultures have affected the traits of its people (Yao, 2009). Research objectives: this study aimed to understand the traits of, and reasons why, the new residents had migrated to Taiwan, as well as to understand the life and current work status of these new residents who serve as home care attendants. In addition, this study explored new residents’ willingness to continue to engage in home care services, and investigated how to improve the negative perspectives that society has been concerned these new residents serving as home care attendants. Our main goal is to enable institutions of cross-cultural home care services to understand the work stress and conditions of home care attendants with different ethnicities, thereby elevating the quality of human resource management and home care services. This study adopted qualitative content analysis, and the researcher cooperated with the institutions of long-term home care services in Kaohsiung City. A total of eight research subjects who met the research requirements were selected based on the research questions and objectives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and interview outlines served as the research instrument; after the in-depth interviews were conducted, the interviews were converted into transcripts for further analysis. The research findings indicated that the public does not exclude the new residents who came from China and serve as home care attendants; however, negative perspectives result regarding these new residents because of their occupation as home care attendants. The research results suggest that the actual implementations of group supervision and individual supervision can effectively elevate the work satisfaction of new residents who serve as home care attendants, and that the elevated work satisfaction can increase their willingness to continue to serve in the same work position. Long-term care plans have been executed for more than a decade, in which Long-term Care Plan 1.0 had been implemented over the past decade and Long-term Care Plan 2.0 started in 2017. The research findings showed that the general public still holds negative perspectives on home care attendants and considered them as primary labor workers, without needing any professional techniques except for the traits of caring, patience, and attentiveness. To increase the willingness of new residents to continue to provide services at the same home care service institutions and to elevate the images of home care attendants, this study suggests that home care service institutions and supervisors should commit to helping new residents to obtain Level C certificates, so as to prove that home care attendant is not an occupation that can be undertaken by anyone, and to verify that new residents serving as home care attendants are capable of providing care for those needing care services. Key words: New residents, homecare workers

Full text
Abstract:
The excessive use of chemical and physical restraints in intermediate care facilities has been a subject of study since the early eighties, and has produced several explanations for why restraint use continues to be practiced. One of the primary reasons often cited is that restraints are used to control "problematic behavior" commonly exhibited by a person suffering from dementia. The focus of the proposed project is to analyze whether restraint practices for residents with moderate to severe dementia differ between Special Care Units and integrated units within long term care facilities. The main objective of the study is to demonstrate whether seniors with dementia residing in Special Care Units will be less likely to encounter physical and chemical restraints than demented residents living within an integrated facility. This objective explores the assumption that Special Care Units were designed to meet the needs of residents with dementia, and therefore, care providers should be more accepting of deviant behaviours. The findings revealed that the more severe the level of memory impairment the more likely a resident would be placed in a Special Care Unit. Once located in these Special Care Units, residents were more likely to experience physical and chemical restraints than their counterparts in integrated care units.

Under the influence of economic development in Taiwan at 1970~1980, demand of residential units was increasing. So far, old housing built in those cities is presenting dilapidated in the equipment and need to be eliminated. The old middle mass residential units take the highest percentage in those buildings. The situation of old, shabby, and messy environment will lower the quality of environment and make the landscape disagreeable to the sight. Urban renewal seems to be a thinkable way to solve these problems. When it comes to urban renewal, to dismantle or reconstruct are always the priority; the means in the past are generally centre on the ways above, leaving renovation and maintenance out of consideration. In fact, many of old housing units in Taiwan can be used again; by ways of renovation and maintenance is more appropriate. But in the concerning laws and policies, there are no precise definition and standard; even the subject of those mentioned ways dose not list to be a reference resource. Therefore, this thesis uses old middle mass residential units as an object to analysis how renovation and maintenance can put into practice. Via the process of urban renewal in Taiwan recently, we can tell how and what be done in different ways of its work, and to sort concerning laws and policies in renovation and maintenance. By analysis the process, it also can show the consequence and the extent to be fulfilled. In the end of this paper, it will generalize what problem we faced and how to make an improvement. According to the basic method of operation and frameworks of analysis can be founded. These are made to abide by renovation and maintenance in old residential units at the urban renewal district in a resources circulation of view in cities.

Abstract:
Fire Departments (CB) have a network of barracks deployed throughout the national territory, currently organized by a model based on the territorial limits of the NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistical Purposes). Therefore, it will be possible to improve the fire department network at the sub-regional level, through the implementation of fire departments performance criteria, including the population coverage within the settled response times. The objective of this work is to propose an operational reorganization of the barracks network already implemented in the Sub-Regions of Lezíria do Tejo and Médio Tejo, based on a model of the Main Network of Operational Services for Fire Brigades in Mainland Portugal. To this end, criteria were defined with a view to the constitution of CB Groups, which sharing areas of activity among themselves, allows prioritizing the dispatch of means based on the response time within the limits of the Groups. The application of the criteria covering the existing road network and the distribution of the resident population, allowed, using the QGIS® software, to assess the areas in need of reinforcement of the barracks network. Applying the model to the Lezíria do Tejo and Médio Tejo sub-regions, there was an increase of 18,4% (1.401 km2) in area and 6,1% of the population (30.524 inhabitants) covered within the reference times (10 and 20 minutes). In order to guarantee operational activity in the 24 municipalities covered, the fire departments network would consist of a total of 24 headquarters and 22 outposts with a minimum of 1.897 professional firefighters. The fact that the barracks network is already implanted in the study target territory and only needs occasional reinforcements, should be a triggering factor of interest in its profitability by the various entities involved.
