The Former German Governor’s Residence in Qingdao was by far the most spectacular building in residential architectures on the German Colonial period. This article studied architectural art of the Former German Governor’s Residence from architectural plan layout, building facades decorating, building structures and materials, and made these three respects compare with the Chinese traditional residential architecture. The architectural plan layout was in common about separate house on the German Colonial period, it inherited the German romantic style of the traditional residential buildings since the 16th century; its facades kept different and changeful; but primary and secondary clear, gorgeous, lively and dignified. The architectural structure was brick stone and wood hybrid construction. In this eclectic style of the building could be seen Germany was one of the birthplaces of the Modern Movement, and it had begun to explore using modern materials and new technologies, but its architectural forms was still the old form.

Abstract:
It is necessary to improve the architecture quality of multi-storey residential clusters through increasing the aesthetic expressiveness of facades. Modern environmental technologies, for example, alternative energy sources used as facade elements, require a review of façade archirecture. The proposed methods allow evaluating the architectural expressiveness and harmony of facades to improve the structural composition of residential clusters. These methods involve the identification of qualitative characteristics of facades of multi-storey buildings in which environmental solutions are applied. The paper proposes the system of specific indicators, according to which the facade elements can be quantified. This method will increase the façade architecture using modern environmental technologies without high expenditures.

Abstract:
It is mostly noted that the design for residential purpose is professionally considered universal, distinct and specific. The socio-economic, cultural and traditional aspects which affect the house users’ requirements and hence the residential designs seem to be considered by professionals’ standpoint as a mere user’s ignorance and lack of access to suitable designs. In this respect, the attributes of vernacular and traditional architecture are sought to unpack the intrinsic relevance to contemporary architecture of residential design within the local context. The case study has been conducted in Dar es Salaam city assessing the local residential house owners’ requirements aiming to understand the social, economic and cultural factors which impact the architecture of residential designs. The findings show that residential designs and use are dynamic and likely to transform based on the owners’ evolving socio-cultural, economic and spatial requirements which highlight the relevance of vernacular and traditional architecture. This trend raises the professional concern on the need for further interrogation of current residential architecture approach. Thus, it has been concluded that professionals perspective should opt for less control of residential requirements and emphasise the recognition of socio-economic and cultural aspects which aspire for flexibility of form, function and spatial organization and facilitate design control by the house owner. Such revelation indicate the validity of vernacular and traditional architectural approach which integrate the local knowledge, optimum utilization of resources, nature and built environment.

Abstract:
Despite the short chronological span of the socialist era architecture heritage, it remains little investigated and underappreciated. Given the political and cultural isolation of the Soviet Union republics and strict architectural design regulations, there was a widespread belief that architects should not use innovative trends. This article exemplifies residential quarters in the historic Podil district, designed and built in the 1970s-1980s in Kyiv. They vividly demonstrate the postmodern ideas embodied in Ukrainian architecture. Methodologically, the article bases on the Ch. Jencks definition of postmodernism and in the comparison of his ideology with the implemented Kyiv project. It states that Kyiv architects proposed not typical Soviet construction projects but international postmodern architectural solutions. It proves that, on the one hand, Ukrainian architects had perfect qualifications to draw construction projects implementing advanced world trends of the time. But on the other hand, it highlights that postmodernism in architecture did not merely confine to Western Europe and the United States but also penetrated the Iron Curtain, exemplifying innovative architectural thinking which ran contrary to the modernist paradigm.

The environmental impacts deriving from pollution due to the high use of cooling and heating systems in buildings have made it necessary to study alternative methods of designing or upgrading existing buildings. In this work the concepts of bioclimatic architecture are discussed and possible technological solutions for energy saving in the construction sector are presented. The solutions proposed concern orientation, the shape of the building and the internal volumetric arrangement. Attention is paid to internal comfort and the problem of convective motions related to the cooling of homes. Other solutions referring to the use of bioclimatic diagrams to determine the maximum and minimum temperatures to be considered for bioclimatic design are also proposed.

Abstract:
The development of residential architecture now depends on market tastes, with the trend of minimalist houses being identical in style and without a theme, as if they have lost their identity. In this case, there were many discussions that featured Eko Prawoto as an architect with the theme of local architecture, but the subject of this research questioned him. Therefore, this study discusses how the identity and concept of the natural locality of Eko Prawoto's residential works are expressed through architectural tectonics. The architectural biographical approach is used in qualitative inductive research through an emic view. The focus of this research topic is on the process of expressing the image of residential buildings through architectural tectonics. The results obtained are in the form of processing materials, techniques, and flavors in the process of building a house. This discussion is important to straighten the concept of local architecture and the meaning of architectural works through a biographical approach. This research is expected to be the basis for the use of tectonics as a basis for meaningful architectural development.

Abstract:
Previous studies have failed to grasp the essence of traditional building habits responding to natural challenges. Therefore, contradictions arise between unified regulations protecting traditional residential architecture proposed by experts and the diverse construction transformation performed by locals. To resolve these contradictions, fieldwork was conducted in Yangwan, a famous village in South China. The traditional residential architectural characteristics in three periods were obtained and compared. Peirce’s interpretation of the three natures of habit and Heidegger’s dwelling help determine the essence of building habits. The logic in traditional residential architecture is analysed through the “four-layer integrated into one” framework (including the natural environment, livelihood form, institution and ideology), yielding the following results. (1) The characteristics of the residential architectural form change with local livelihood form, institution and ideology. Nevertheless, the process by which local residents think, judge and respond to natural challenges remains unchanged (Thirdness of Habit), forming the core of dwelling. (2) The characteristics of the architectural form are determined by the causal chain of “four-layer integrated into one”. Stable causal chains are formed by the Thirdness of Habit, which represents people’s initiative in addressing natural challenges. Therefore, the protection of traditional residential architecture should centre on dwelling and people’s agency in response to the natural environment rather than on maintaining a unified physical form.

Abstract:
This study aims to reveal the sustainability of Balinese traditional residential architectural practices which are based on the provisions of traditional ethnic Balinese social stratification and refers to the capital ownership in Generative Structural Theory from Pierre Bourdieu (economic, cultural, social and symbolic). At present, there are dynamics ownership and capital conversion in the traditional social strata which affect the sustainability of traditional residential architecture practices. The traditional Balinese residential architecture in this study is understood to be the spatial layout and traditional residential buildings of the Middle Bali era. Its sustainability today is seen from the concept of capital in the perspective of Bourdieu’s theory. The basic assumption of Bourdieu’s theory is basically that humans are in the field of social struggle to emerge victorious by competing with one another. This study is a qualitative research with interpretative descriptive method. Primary data were obtained from selected informants (purposive) and from field observations, as well as secondary data from the literature. The study findings show that traditional residential architecture practices in the Middle Bali era were strongly influenced by capital ownership (economic, cultural, social, and symbolic) with various forms of conversion to traditional Balinese aristocratic (triwangsa). Development at this time has opened the opportunity to control various capital for ordinary community (jabawangsa), so that the realm of Balinese traditional housing becomes a medium of struggle as well as a symbol of success in social struggle. On the other hand, the contestation of Balinese traditional residential architectural practices is a sustainability in the arena of social struggle within Balinese society today.

Abstract:
The article describes the planning structure and architecture of one of the first residential settlements built after the Civil War in Rostov-on-Don, the cooperative society “Tramvayshchik”. Step-by-step changes in Rostov occurred in the 1920s. Almost each architectural project of the mid-1920s is characterized by the traditional dependence on spatial planning, a regular development of residential settlements with buildings around the perimeter, with conventional differentiation of urban spaces into utilitarian and festive. It is demonstrated that planning solutions of the residential settlements are a combination of both traditional and popular principles of ribbon development with drastic urban decompaction and site landscaping. Planning of residential buildings is strongly influenced by Art Nouveau and Neo-classical architecture. It is concluded that the construction site and the existing patterns of spatial and visual thinking are a sort of significant formative factors here; the residential settlements are a synthesis of the old and new traditions in architectural and urban development during the transition period of the mid-1920s.

Abstract:
Mediterranean architecture is considered the predecessor of the modern concept of “bioclimatic” sustainable design due to its climate reactive attitude (Coch H. 1996, Vissilia, A.M. 2009). Another aspect which renders it to be associated with the notion of modern sustainability is the employment of recyclable materials such as natural stone and wood. The vernacular architecture of Bodrum peninsula located in southwestern Turkey bears the typical characteristics of Mediterranean architecture. Since the 1970s, Bodrum has been attracting the attention of local and foreign tourists. The “architectural pollution” created by tourism facilities paradoxically devastates the natural and unique architectural characteristics of Bodrum which attract the attention of tourists. In this article, the primary focus will be the residential architecture in Bodrum due to its quite dominant typology among tourism facilities. However, the local building regulations aiming to protect natural values and architectural identity and the sensitive attitudes of some architects about preserving architectural identity and visual ecology can be considered positive aspects with regards to the harmonious architectural development of the region. Visual ecology seems generally more vital than biophysical ecology in terms of sustainable tourism economy, and tourism, is the most important sector in Bodrum. In a touristic region such as Bodrum, cultural and economic sustainability are interrelated. Today, research related to sustainability focuses primarily on energy saving and relevant technological inventions and as a result, issues such as cultural expression, contextual connection, identity formation, local differences and changes do not get their deserved places in the sustainability value setting. This paper aims to detect some clues about the outline of the residential architecture within the context of cultural sustainability in Bodrum in the light of residential architecture samples.

Abstract:
In the process of rapid urbanization, many pollution problems arise in developing cities. In particular, industrial point source air pollution is one of the main causes that detract from urban development and destroy ecological harmony. Gas pollution directly affects people's physical health when a source of industrial emissions is close to residential areas. In the planning and design of sustainable architecture, it becomes increasingly important to avoid industrial atmospheric diffusion pollution in the broadest sense through studying the layout of urban residential architecture group. This paper establishes the database of atmospheric pollution diffusion based on the ArcGIS platform. Through simulating the spatial distribution state of the atmospheric point source pollution concentration in Nanjing Chemical Industrial Park, the spatial information of urban atmospheric environmental quality can be provided for the layout and planning of the neighboring residential quarter. Combining with CFD wind field simulation of different architectural layouts, this paper studies the adaptive layout of residential architecture on surrounding environment. The results show that the pollutants’ concentration in summer is slightly lower than in winter; the pollutant concentration of determinantal layout is lower than the oblique column type and alternate layout in Shanpan Community. It explores the relationships among urban residential architecture, people and natural environment, and the results are very important in conducting the pattern planning and design of urban architecture, improvement of living environmental quality and energy conservation and environmental protection.

Abstract:
Abstract The article is devoted to the visions and problems of the future of post-industrial and post-pandemic housing architecture. Architecture always strives for society and trends in it, sometimes anticipating, sometimes lagging behind in its expressions. Now there is another industrial revolution, which should lead to a transition from an industrial to a post-industrial society. The main directions in the change of modern society affecting the architectural design of the living environment are analyzed. It is also alleged that the pandemic was Covid-19 a catalyst that identified serious gaps in the organization of the residential environment. Outbreaks of viruses have occurred and will occur, especially in megacities. The need for social distancing, restrictions on their stay in their own home called into question the accepted principles of designing a residential environment. In the context of the ongoing global socioeconomic changes, there is an urgent need for prudent modernization of traditional residential design models. Experimental housing architecture is a long tradition of finding new forms of housing, supported by the desire of society to find answers to the challenges of time, where the architect has a significant role. The article considers the recommendations of students of architects of the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering on the design of a residential environment with promising proposals for solving existing housing problems, which they carried out during architectural design.

Abstract:
Iranian architecture and urbanism have developed in a historical process based on the different needs of people. The evolution of traditional Iranian architecture and urbanism may be characterized by eight factors: introversion, spatial organization, function of different parts, lifestyle, construction method, communication between houses, climatic conditions, and relationship with nature. In the recent decades, however, Iranian architecture and urbanism have faced a blind imitation of foreign cultures. The majority of modern buildings do not reflect the national identity of Iranian people. This paper investigates the architectural and urban transformation in Iran based on the rearrangement of building spaces. In doing so, the paper explores the development process of major interior and exterior elements such as public entrances, private entrances, kitchens, rooms, yards and open spaces. As a conclusion, while traditional Iranian architecture attempts to preserve the national identity and meet the different needs of Iranian people, the modern architecture is a blind imitation of western cultures.

Indonesia has a variety of vernacular architecture. The various of local wisdom values from Indonesian traditional houses have succeeded for local identity strengthening. On the other hand, residential housing currently prioritizes functional needs only, while aspects of formal characteristics and local wisdom values are not the main considerations in the design of today's residential housings. The role and characteristics of local wisdom values as an approach in residential design is certainly interesting to study more deeply. Descriptive analysis research method through field observation and literature study which was carried out as an effort to answer the research problem. The results show that the optimization of the passive design strategy of residential buildings by adapting local wisdom values is expected to increase indoor thermal comfort levels, achieve building energy efficiency, strengthen the urban identity, preserve architectural styles, also develop of sustainable architecture. In this way, healthy housing with local character can be realized throughout Indonesia.

Abstract:
This paper examines household architectural variability within the residential area of Sayil, Yucatán, Mexico. Labor-investment figures for residential architecture are used as a means of categorizing variability. A rank ordering of vault area and per-capita labor investment is achieved and an architectural wealth hierarchy is presented for the residential area of Sayil. This hierarchy is placed in the context of Maya land-tenure systems. It is argued that large, wealthy households may have been “first-founder” families in the Sayil valley and thus were in a position to effectively control and monopolize land and other productive resources, including human labor, for their own economic advantage.

[Objective] Through in-depth study of traditional Gan residential buildings, it is found that in China’s traditional culture, nature is more important than architecture. Many people believe that architecture is like a man-made natural object, which can make people return to a feeling of living in nature, and is also a state of ideal life for many residents in China. [Methods] By using the analysis method, it is found that the traditional residential building structure of Ganpai is a bucket structure. The basic unit is the ‘enter’ relationship, which combines the ‘enter’ relationship, the adjustment of column spacing and the reduction of column to form the ‘+ -’ relationship. Through this way, a unique architectural group layout can be formed. [Conclusion] Therefore, we should fully combine traditional materials with modern information means to improve our traditional technology, so as to keep pace with the times, keep pace with the times and keep pace with the times.

his broad understanding of style as a social and study of distinctiveness has some precedents in sociology, architecture, language, art and many other works which provide a framework that accommodates theories among other semiotic forms. Architectural style is a by-product of the understanding of artifacts that distinguish products or period in to distinct, and consequently, people perceived it as a unique or popular tendency. Glapsides contemporary individual-built area in Famagusta district is characterized by outstanding appearance of architectural styles in a contextual manner within the post-modern cycles. The representation of the diverse architectural styles creates an avenue for reach post-modern settlement that even the environmental values, history and a culture can be read easily. Thus, contemporary residential buildings with stylistic architectural appearances displayed some qualities of classical models as well contained traditional heritage. This research aimed at discussing the significances of architectural styles in contemporary residential buildings of Glapsides in Famagusta district. The paper focused its scopes on single-family residential buildings, with regard to the physical categories of their architectural fashions (façade). It will further explore the general contributions of architectural styles as means of creating contextual continuity, from the neighborhood to the district as a whole. In this research, the significance of architectural style will be evaluated based on their historic references, aesthetics and design characteristics as well as the visual contextual manners in the categories. In order to succeed and achieve this aim, twelve (12) case studies was selected within Glapsides area (region) and it was divided categorically based on their architectural styles. However, based on the selected cases a personal observation, effective site survey studies, and related literatures are the techniques adapted to source supportive data. This paper attempts to discuss the reciprocal connection between culture and architecture as a social product. In doing so, the paper intends to critically engage with the theme of ‘culture’, its impact on residential developments, and its character in the process of recuperation of post-war society in Sarajevo. The development of residential architecture is followed through the four historical periods that had the greatest impact on its formation. Setting the scene to better understand the current built design challenges, post-war, post-socialist culture and architecture are analysed through the lens of T.S. Elliot's (1948) theory on culture. Specifically, the paper refers to the criteria Elliot defined as essential for a culture to survive; Organic Structure, Regional Context and Balance & Unity in Religion. Finally, the paper identifies the main obstacles in the process of cultural transformation of Sarajevo, indicating an urgent need for addressing the issues of cultural and architectural vitality.

Abstract:
Central courtyards emerged in many civilizations of the world. Cyprus was no exception as courtyards formed important architectural features throughout the centuries in the residential architecture of the island. The erection of dwellings attached to each other, the need for a private outdoor protected space due to the introverted character of societies, as well as the climatic conditions, i.e. warm Mediterranean climate, led to a widespread use of the courtyard in nearly all traditional residences of the island in the last two centuries. Apart from vernacular architecture, courtyards appeared in earlier historic periods and, in some cases, they were found to be used in the residential architecture of more recent decades. This paper presents an analytical study of the social and environmental aspects of courtyards in the vernacular dwellings of Cyprus. The research underlines the role of the courtyard as an important social gathering area, as well as a microclimate regulator in the residences. Moreover, it highlights its bioclimatic significance in enhancing the integration of nature's elements into the design and overall architectural concept of the dwelling.

Abstract:
Abstract As a product of native masters of the vernacular and the accumulation of thousands of years of tradition, local architecture embodies the physical and sociocultural characteristics of the environment of which it is a part. This is an indigenous architecture that displays the character of multiple and unknown local contributors and openly reflects the traditions, culture, experience and customs of the people it serves. Vernacular architecture differs according to the physical conditions of each region, becoming an expression of the culture of that area. Underlying it is the ancient wisdom, experience, skills and mastery that is transferred from generation to generation. The vernacular in architecture is the direct and unconscious translation of a society’s culture into physical substance within the framework of specified needs. It draws from tradition and with time, provides a social and cultural documentation that is passed on from one generation to the next. The aim of the study is to examine the residential works of the self-taught architect Nail Çakırhan, one of the most adamant defenders of vernacular architecture in Turkey and a recipient of the Aga Khan award in 1983, in the context of the house he built for himself using the local architectural materials of the region of Ula, where he was born, and the residential buildings he created in Akyaka, in an attempt to analyze Çakırhan’s contemporary interpretation of local architecture.

Abstract:
As a result of excessive construction and development, the earth environment has severely deteriorated. Based on the data from Architecture and Building Research Institute, Ministry of the Interior, the amount of CO2 emissions of the construction industry has exceeded one quarter of the national total. The CO2 emission distribution is 9.31% for building materials production, 0.2% for construction, 1.49% for materials transportation, 11.88% for residential daily energy use and 5.94% for commercial daily energy use with a total of 28.82%. It can be seen that the residential buildings play a key role on energy saving and CO2 emission reduction policy. Although, at present, new residential buildings over 50 million NT dollars are required to execute green architecture design to conform to the green architecture labelling system based on the related building regulations, the government policy of green architecture on residential buildings has been more or less passive. For the general residential buildings built earlier and newly built, the government is not yet to require them to comply with the green architecture labelling system. Therefore, it may influence the promotion of energy saving and carbon dioxide emission reduction policy. The green architecture development of residential buildings is influenced by a lot of criteria. By studying those criteria, the most easily implemented or most cost effective criteria can then be applied to them. This research tries to establish a assessing framework for applying green architecture to residential building development. This research first, through literature reviews and and expert interviews, determines the criteria and sub-criteria to be used in the initial assessing framework. Then, through expert questionnaires, the Delphi method is used to finalize the assessing framework. Finally, the Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) is used to identify the relative weights of criteria and sub-criteria. From the relative weights of criteria, the building materials criterion has the greatest impact on the application of green architecture to residential building development. The priority weights of sub-criteria can help us understand when to apply those sub-criteria. In gerneral, the sub-criteria with high priority weights can be immediately implemented in the existing and newly built residential buildings and the sub-criteria with low priority weights should be implemented in the design stage.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article shows the relevance of studying compositional techniques applied to residential areas in provincial cities in relation to the unfolding program of housing renovation and reconstruction of historical centres of cities. Despite a significant amount of research on various aspects of Soviet urban planning and domestic architecture of the period under review, the local research, focused on the development of particular cities in comparison with the architectural practice of the capital is in demand in both domestic and foreign architectural studies. Materials and methods. The step-by-step comparison of the Yaroslavl domestic architecture, dating back to the 20ies and 30ies of the 20th century, is compared with the one of Moscow and Leningrad to identify the features characterizing the formation of compositional techniques applied to residential areas in Yaroslavl. Results. The study highlights several stages in the evolution of residential development in Yaroslavl. It is shown that the first stage gravitated towards the Moscow practice characterized by a somewhat mechanistic approach to filling the territory of a quarter. The second stage, which dates back to the end of the first five-year plan, was characterized by a new function of domestic architecture as a limiting controller of central urban spaces. Further stages are focused on the task of developing approaches to the preservation of the valuable historical legacy in the context of reconstruction of central neighbourhoods. Conclusions. The article shows the features of the Yaroslavl architecture at each stage, and conclusions are made about the extent and nature of influence produced by the Moscow and Leningrad schools. There are unique approaches to the compositional organization of residential quarters built both on vacant land plots and in the central neighbourhoods of the city that accommodates a valuable historical heritage.
