Abstract:
Agricultural land and woodland in the vicinity of urban settlements appear increasingly to represent a key element and strategic resource for addressing issues of residential quality, and hence the requalification of the urban construct. In effect, from a "vacuum" awaiting construction, the periurban agricultural territory is emerging as the yardstick for a new measurement and integration of the public policies governing urban and territorial plans and those for rural development. This book proposes a number of cues and methodological and operational elements to stimulate reflection on this new scenario. It does so through the exploration of a number of significant and innovative experiences in Italy and the rest of Europe, while at the same time also proposing an initial appraisal of the process of design and social mobilisation for the definition of the scenario for the Prato Agricultural Park.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the impact of crime and accessibility on housing prices. In particular, it assesses the effect of residential burglary on apartment prices in Stockholm, building on previous research that indicated residential burglary—not violence or vandalism—had the greatest effect on apartment prices in the Swedish capital. A review of the literature on hedonic modeling covering more than three decades shows that, despite different modeling strategies, these studies consistently find evidence that crime affects housing prices. Two measures of accessibility are used: a “global” distance decay from Stockholm city center and a “local” measure of accessibility to work expressed as travel costs. Results for all of Stockholm County confirm previous findings once limited to Stockholm municipality only, that residential burglary reduces apartment prices. However, such an effect varies across space and levels of accessibility.

Abstract:
This chapter encompasses the earliest human occupations of the Arctic and Subarctic, focusing on paleoclimate and human-environment interactions and the colonization of Beringia and northern North America. It discusses new discoveries in the high latitudes of Eurasia and North America. For each period, from 32,000 to 12,000 years ago, there are summaries of technology, typology, subsistence economy, and settlement systems. After a Late Glacial Maximum hiatus, humans recolonized northeastern Asia around 16,000 cal B.P. and Beringia by 14,000 cal B.P. Early Beringian diets were diverse, incorporating large and small mammals, waterfowl, and fish. These early populations likely had high residential mobility strategies.

Abstract:
The rapidly increasing number of threatened flora and fauna species worldwide is one of the chief problems confronting environmental professionals today. This problem is largely due to the impact humans have had on land use through development (e.g. agricultural, residential, industrial, infrastructure and mining developments). The requirement for developers to implement measures to reduce the impacts of development on wildlife is underpinned by government legislation. A variety of measures or strategies are available to reduce such impacts, including those to reduce impacts on flora and fauna during land clearance, to deter fauna from potential hazards, to facilitate the movement of fauna around and through a development site as well as those to provide additional habitat. In recent years, considerable advances have been made in the techniques used to reduce the impacts of development on wildlife in Australia and overseas. Reducing the Impacts of Development on Wildlife contains a comprehensive range of practical measures to assist others to reduce the impacts resulting from development on terrestrial flora and fauna, and promotes ecologically sustainable development. It will be very useful to environmental consultants and managers, developers, strategists, policy makers and regulators, as well as community environmental groups and students. 2012 Whitley Award Commendation for Zoological Text.

Abstract:
Managing the risk of harm to others is an essential aspect of the care of hospital patients and mentally disordered people in prisons. As these people move to the community, the responsibility to assess risk remains, but the circumstances and the resources available change. This chapter reviews violence risk-assessment principles described in previous chapters, and applies them to the management of risk in community settings. Those principles continue to require the obtaining of information from a range of sources and the collation of that information, a task complicated by the coexistence of correlation-based and causation-based approaches in the literature. Managing risk in community settings requires particular attention to a range of concerns, including the appropriateness of residential placements, the monitoring of people’s mental states, and the ethics of sharing information. It also requires the integration of risk-management strategies with other tools of rehabilitation, such as vocational services and substance-abuse services.
