Local vessel wall shear stress is considered to be important for vessel growth. This study is a theoretical investigation of how this mechanism contributes to the structure of a vascular network. The analyses and simulations were performed on vascular networks of increasing complexity, ranging from single-vessel resistance to large hexagonal networks. These networks were perfused by constant-flow sources, constant-pressure sources, or pressure sources with internal resistances. The mathematical foundation of the local endothelial shear stress and vessel wall adaptation was as follows: delta d/

The article presents the theoretical substantiation of using the optimal trim of “river- sea” vessels in order to improve the propulsion of vessels of various types and purposes navigating on seas and rivers. There has been carried out the analysis of the optimal trim for different types of ships in operation. The given calculations prove the possibility of designing new ships with improved sailing characteristics. The scheme of damping the bow shear wave coming from the stem of the “river-sea” vessel is illustrated using the shear wave coming from the bow bulb, with a differential to the bow.

These values were used to calculate resistance of large arteries (greater than 100 microns diameter) and small vessels (less than 100 microns diameter). Under control conditions

Abstract:
Abstract Stress orientated Hydrogen Induced cracking (SOHIC) is a manifestation of sulfide stress cracking (SSC) in C-Mn steels by a mechanism involving the linking of planar cracks normal to the primary propagation direction of the crack. It has been known for many years, and the solution has been considered to be the use of hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) resistant steels. Work by the Materials Properties Council has, however indicated that HIC resistant steels may be more susceptible to SOHIC. This raises questions about both the most appropriate steels, and test methods for evaluating them

Abstract:
This report details the history of vertical lock wall repairs and the development and laboratory characterization of an ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) using locally sourced materials for improved durability of lock walls subjected to impact and abrasion from navigational vessels. This UHPC, referred to as Lock-Tuf, has been designed for use in a precast environment with ambient curing methods and serves as a material proof-of-concept for future lock wall rehabilitations. Mechanical properties such as unconfined compressive strength, flexural response, tensile capacity, impact resistanc

Describes the computer program SPAN which computes the nonlinear transient response of a submarine pipeline, in contact with the ocean floor, to wave and current excitation. The dynamic response of a pipeline to impact loads, such as loads from trawl gear of fishing vessels, may also be computed. In addition, thermal expansion problems for submarine pipelines may be solved using SPAN. Beam finite element theory is used for spatial discretization of the partial differential equations governing the motion of a submarine pipeline. Large-deflection, small-strain theory is employed. Influence of hydraulic properties of rootstocks and the rootstock-scion graft on water use and productivity of apple trees. Abstract:
This one year exploratory project investigated hydraulic architecture of apple dwarfing rootstocks. The hypothesis was that hydraulic conductance is correlated with rootstock vigor. A previous study of trees on three rootstocks in Israel showed that dwarfed trees used less water than un-dwarfed trees. Analysis showed that if the tree maintains leaf water potentials above minimum values, then this implies that the dwarfed trees have lower leaf conductance, which may also be the cause of dwarfing. The current project studied small 2-year old unworked rootstock trees, and full sized trees bearing

Abstract:
EPRG research aimed at establishing a limit on the toughness value that separates toughness-dependent from toughness-independent failure behavior. More specifically, one objective is to evaluate the toughness-dependent Battelle formula for burst resistance of gouges for (very) low toughness values. This mainly experimental project checks this behavior on several gas transmission pipes, a small diameter one, 150 mm, a medium diameter one, 350 mm, and a large diameter one, 900 mm. Pipe material is carefully characterized in terms of tensile properties, Charpy energy, and shear area. Then, based
