Abstract:
Large amounts of cereal straws are produced in Africa every year. The straw is a potentially valuable source of energy for ruminant livestock. The quality of some straws, notably bird resistant sorghum varieties, are very low (Reed et al . 1987) and may need treatment prior to feeding to the animals. Since physical treatments are often expensive and technically unsuitable for small farming conditions, proven chemical methods could be employed wherever they are technically and economically feasible. Abstract:
Strawbreaker foot-rot is a major limiting factor to cost efficient winter wheat production in the Pacific Northwest. Development of resistant cultivars has been hindered by the lack of adequate levels of genetic resistance and screening techniques which can consistently detect desired genotypes. Studies were conducted to determine if the reported strawbreaker foot-rot resistance of the cultivar "Rendezvous" is effective on isolates of Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides found in the Pacific Northwest. Protected, naturally infected and artificially inoculated treatments were employed to determi

Abstract:
The complexity of the behaviour of neonate Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larvae and the limited information on their response to the morphological characteristics of South African sugarcane varieties was the primary justification to study antixenotic/antibiotic effects on larval behaviour. Laboratory experiments were conducted with stalk segments in plastic jars inoculated with larvae and in a metal cage covered with gauze. In jars, the larvae were observed until they penetrated the stalks. After 14 days, the stalks were dissected and larvae weighed. In all varieties, larva

Abstract:
The maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) is one of the most destructive storage insect pest of maize (Zea mays L.) in tropical Africa and worldwide, especially when susceptible varieties are grown. Therefore, grain resistance against the maize weevil should be part of a major component of an integrated maize weevil management strategy. The specific objectives of this study were to: i) determine farmers’ perceptions about weevil resistance in maize cultivars; ii) determine the genotypic variation for maize weevil resistance in eastern and southern Africa maize germplasm lines; iii) stu

Abstract:
Maize streak virus (MSV) disease, transmitted by leafhoppers (Cicadulina mbila, Naude), and maize downy mildew (DM) disease caused by Peronosclerospora sorghi (Weston and Uppal) Shaw, are major contributing factors to low maize yields in Africa. These two diseases threaten maize production in Mozambique, thus the importance of breeding Mozambican maize varieties that carry resistance to these diseases. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) was employed to pyramid MSV and DM disease resistant genes into a single genetic background through simultaneous selection. Firstly, it was essential to determine

The brittle lines have differences in brittleness score from 0 to 5. IRB3 is a brittle culm mutant of IR64, it showed a Score 3

Abstract:
Finger millet is the second most important cereal in Uganda after maize. The yields however, have remained low due to several constraints, such as finger millet blast disease and limited technology options. Therefore breeding investigations were conducted to determine farmer preferred traits, genetic variation, combining ability and genetic effects for head blast disease and head shapes, and other quantitative traits in finger millet. Among other traits, farmers preferred high grain yield potential, brown seed colour, compact head shape, tolerance to blast disease, high tillering ability, medi

Abstract:
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is the third most important cereal food crop in Uganda. However, the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica severely constraints its production. The use of Striga resistant sorghum varieties may be one of the most feasible ways of managing the Striga problem. A series of studies were carried out with the overall objective to develop new sorghum genotypes that are resistant to Striga and high yielding in Eastern Uganda. Initially, a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) was carried out with the main objectives to study the current constraints faced by farmers in sorghum produ

Abstract:
Maize is the principal staple food in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), but production lags behind population growth. The African stem borer, Busseola fusca, Fuller (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), and the spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus, Swinhoe (Lepidoptera, Crambidae) are serious insect pests of maize in tropical environments. The damage can be managed by breeding stem borer resistant maize varieties but there is limited information that can be used to devise appropriate breeding programs. Therefore breeding investigations were conducted to appraise germplasm screening methods, and to determine combin
