Abstract:
Resisted and assisted training methods aim to increase neural activation, or post-activation potentiation (PAP), to enhance sprint performance. A preloaded stimulus causes a temporary performance increase that is more significant than what warm-up alone can provide. Resistance activities have traditionally been used to induce post-activation potentiation. Little is known when assisted and resisted sprints are combined and their effect on PAP. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the acute potentiating effect of combined resisted and assisted sprints on subsequent 20 m sprint performance. Six

How can the power of wholes be resisted without essentializing their parts? Drawing on different archives and methodologies, including aesthetics, history, biology, affect, race, and queer, the interventions in this volume explore different ways of troubling the consistency and stability of wholes, breaking up their closure and making them more dynamic. Doing so without necessarily presupposing or producing parts, an outside, or a teleological development, they indicate the critical potential of partiality without parts.

Abstract:
Nickel steels ASTM A353 and A553 (9% Nickel) and ASTM A203 Gr. E (3½% Ni) were studied for environmental cracking resistance using laboratory slow strain rate and constant load tests. Potential cracking mechanisms included mercury liquid metal embrittlement (Hg LME), hydrogen embrittlement and methanol stress-corrosion cracking (MeOH SCC). No susceptibility to MeOH SCC was observed in these tests. Cathodic charging with hydrogen strongly embrittled both 3½% and 9% Ni steel. These tests revealed a serious susceptibility of ASTM A353 9% Ni steel to Hg LME. Tests of quenched and double-tempered A

Abstract Ti-6Al-4V-Ru and Ti-3Al-2.5V-Ru alloy products, in both alpha-beta and transformed-beta conditions, exhibited complete resistance to sulfide- and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SSC and SCC) in various synthetic deaerated, acidic, sweet and sour geothermal and worst-case sour-gas well produced-fluid brines to temperatures as high as 330°C. SCC test methods included NACE sustained-load tensiles, C-ring, U-bend, and slow-strain-rate tensile testing. The two alloys also fully resisted localized and crevice corrosion in these high-temperature acidic, sweet and sour brines, whe

Abstract:
Orchestrated irrationality in our public discourse is produced by technologically enhanced and commercially purposed atomization and tribalism. Public discourse now leans away from a humane, free, and reasoned political rationality and towards self-interested, calculative, herd conformism. The bulls and bears of consumer society have largely displaced the civic logic of the liberal democratic pursuit of the common good. The power interests that govern global consumerism are enhanced by subordinating the common good ends of genuinely political life to the self-interested and profit driven dynam

Abstract:
Direct to consumer advertising is increasingly used by the pharmaceutical industry and its merits have been extensively debated. Regulations related to such advertising vary: in New Zealand and the United States of America (USA), for example, regulations do not explicitly prohibit such advertising and its use has grown. In other countries, however, the practice has been banned and heavy lobbying by the pharmaceutical industry has been resisted.

This blog post examines how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has impacted the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia in southern Moldova. The author argues that the Moldovan government’s sharp condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its move toward the European Union has caused tensions with the Gagauz minority. Furthermore, the text highlights how since the beginning of the invasion, Gagauzia’s regional authorities, as well as the general population, have resisted efforts by the Moldovan government to limit Russian influence in the region. It also shows how dissatisfaction with the poli

Once considered a partial exception to the recent diffusion of populism worldwide, Romania saw Radical Right populism return to Parliament in 2020. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) successfully campaigned on a platform of defending the Christian faith, freedom, the traditional family, and the nation. Although the party was initially considered the result of individual entrepreneurship linked to its founding leaders, it has successfully built on diffused networks of societal activism whose origins could be traced back to the early 2000s. However, the AUR’s track record of discourse

Abstract:
The digitalisation of the economy has spotlighted fundamental flaws in international tax rules, which have been exacerbated since the 1970s with the wider shift to the services economy and the growth of international services. These systemic flaws have been more evident from the perspective of countries that are mainly importers of services that have tried to retain rights to tax profits at the source from which they derive. While they succeeded in retaining a wider scope for source taxation, key provisions have been subject to continuing conflicts and contestation over their formulation and i

Abstract:
The relatively recent emergence and sustained rise of social protection as a policy agenda in Africa can be understood as either a nationally owned or ‘donor-driven’ process. While elements of both can be seen in different countries at different times, this paper focuses on the pivotal role of transnational actors, specifically international development agencies, as ‘policy pollinators’ for social protection. These agencies deployed a range of tactics to induce African governments to implement cash transfer programmes and establish social protection systems, including: (1) building the empiric

Abstract:
This paper examines fiscal relations in contexts of fragility. It focuses on the tax relationship between the post-transitional Somali government and advanced businesses in the telecommunications sector, which emerged during the period of state collapse. The paper poses two specific questions. It asks why such dominant economic players would pay taxes to a state that, per standard tax theory, had limited authority, legitimacy, and capacity to deliver ‘reciprocal returns’ or collective goods and services. Secondly, for a sector that had emerged in the context of statelessness, it interrogates w
