Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the development path of the dynamic capabilities construct, calling attention to two ways in which the path has become bifurcated. In particular it pays attention to the widening chasm between Teece’s original conception of dynamic capabilities and his revised conception, as expressed in some of his more recent works. The roots of these divergent, and yet theoretically consequential understandings are explored, as are the ways they have developed in the literature: the need to reconcile the routine nature of dynamic capabilities on the one hand with the need to account for the ability of organizations to intentionally alter their resource base on the other. The chapter argues that such a reconciliation is possible, once a process (or performative) approach is adopted. In particular, the authors argue that in so far as capabilities fully exist in performance, each particular performance may enact capabilities differently over time and in particular contexts.

Abstract:
How do capabilities-based resources focused on customers, supply chains, and how does innovation impact a firm’s strategic assets and performance? We develop a framework to (1) test strategic resource allocations as investments in future opportunities, (2) examine the influences of strategic resources on strategic assets, and (3) study the effects of strategic assets on performance. The model incorporates data from a 12-year period to examine the lagged effects over a “strategic” length period. The results show that the resources that affect assets include business-to-customer (B2C) marketing expenditures, sourcing attentiveness, inventory readiness, production capacity, and overall innovation creativity. Customer satisfaction and brand equity are two firm-level strategic assets that influence financial performance. The robustness of the overall results was also examined in two technological contexts (low/stable vs. high tech).

Abstract:
Human resource is the most valuable asset in an organization as it is managed, operated and run by them. The progress, survival and success of the organization is totally depends on the capabilities and the competitiveness of their HR especially in the era of critical and drastic change. As a result, HR manager has to face a more competitive, uncertain and complex HR expectations, needs and wants in a turbulent business environment. Therefore, his ability in managing HR is becoming more crucial to the success and the survival of the organisation. As HR manager is the key player in running the organisation, it is important for him to ensure a holistic and comprehensive approach, by putting in balance both the human side which is considered as soft HRM and the technical side which is considered as hard HRM, need to be simultaneously taken into consideration. Therefore, managing the human side of human resourceculture, symbols, diversity, humour, emotional intelligence, justice, forgiveness, and spiritualityis believed to be far more complicated than managing the technical side of it. The human side of human resource management treats employees as partners and a source of competitive advantage through their commitment, trust, job satisfaction, loyalty and collaboration.Furthermore, HR is viewed as a proactive rather than passive inputs in executing the task and responsibility. The managers ability in managing the human side of human resource strategically is equally important as managing the technical side as both play significant role in influencing the bottom line of the organisation through their symbiotic relationship.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter investigates the development of industrial and technological capabilities for cyber defence in Europe up to 2016. It assesses (a) the relevant policies, as well as (b) the institutional and (c) the industrial and technologies resources of Western Europe’s major powers (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom), and then of a selection of representative examples of medium and lesser powers (Italy, Spain, and Sweden).’ It establishes that since the mid-2000s developing cyber-security and cyber-defence capabilities emerged as a top priority for all the European powers examined. The most important efforts were from Europe’s largest military powers, France and the UK, which both showcase a firm intention to belong to the circle of leading powers in cyberspace. The efficacy of these efforts is hard to judge, given the absence of greater transparency and the nature of the cyber risks and threats.
