Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents the different theoretical texts that informed our study and interpretation of empirical data. We review selected health services and social science literature to provide insights on the mobilization of knowledge in the health care sector, with specific attention to practice-based examples. We include a critical reading of perspectives on evidence-based management (EBMgt) which takes its lead from evidence-based medicine (EBM). Drawing on insights from the strategic management literature, and the Resource-Based View (RBV), we discuss how knowledge is understood as a valuable asset, and explore some implications for public services and health care settings. We conclude by contributing a novel perspective on the political economy of public management knowledge production—a macro-level analysis that seeks to explore how interactions at the political, economic, and policy levels shape the institutional context for management knowledge use in the public sector.

Abstract:
The industry of information technology in India includes the following services namely IT and software services, IT enabled services, hardware (engineering) services, and e-businesses/e-governance associated with government services. IT services are outsourcing of software support/installation, processing services, systems integration, exports of products and services, and training/education of the information technology science. The significant improvements in the industry have brought about a vital need for systematic process of managing the majority of employees in the IT industry. There was also a need created for technology in the subject matter of managing the employees and other aspects that came into picture. Hence, Innovative Human Resource practices came into existence for upgrading the skills and building the employees to work towards the goal of the organization. This gave birth to HR technology, Employee Engagement, ERP and so on. The study focuses on identifying various applications of Innovative Human resource practices in IT industry, the role of demographics and the factors influencing employee engagement and productivity. The study also analyzes the impact of innovative human resource practices on employee engagement and productivity and finally examines the mediating role of employee engagement upon the relationship between innovative human resource practices and employee productivity. To support the study, review of the relevant literature (Books, Research thesis and research papers) available in the innovative human resource practices space (both Global and Indian) was done. The research gap was identified in 4 categories i.e. empirical gap, evidence gap, methodological gap and population gap. The conceptual framework for the study was also designed. The literature review was categorized into national and international, theoretical and empirical to keep the study relevant according to the current global standards. Based on the research gap and the conceptual framework, the questionnaire was framed and according to the hypothesis the plan of analysis was structured to further the study. The data collection was completed through offline and online method, based on sample design. The analysis included Structural Equation Model, ANOVA, Independent t test and Mediation analysis – Andrew Hayes, Model 4 using SPSS and AMOS software. The study found out that HR Technology, HR Analytics, Collaboration Tools, AI in HR and Employee Pulse survey, are contributors to Innovative Human resource practices but there is no significant impact of demographic variables on perception of IHRM. Also, Employee retention, Reward and recognition, Personality development and Performance appraisal are factors influencing Employee engagement and Innovative work system, Employee contribution, Vigour, Dedication, Psychological factors, Motivational factors, Experience Factors and Individual capacity are factors influencing Employee Productivity. IHRM has significant impact on employee engagement and the employee productivity. Employee engagement mediates the relationship between IHRM and employee productivity. To conclude, this study provides insights into how employees are affected by innovative HR practices and provides practical solutions for organizations looking to encourage staff. By using motivational strategies that are directly tied to employees’ immediate interests and that are intended to affect their views and attitudes, innovative HR practices can assist firms in projecting a sense of employee engagement. Employees are further encouraged to be selfless and altruistic by the degrees of perceived satisfaction with the creative HR methods. As a result, they become more open to doing tasks that aren’t directly relevant to their professions but nevertheless helpful to their businesses. This would increase the efficiency of enterprises in managing their human resources, particularly those businesses that are team-based. Full text
Abstract:
Illicit financial flows (IFFs) constitute a major challenge for development in the Global South, as domestic resource mobilization is imperative for providing crucial public services. While several methods offer to measure the extent of IFFs, each has its benefits and drawbacks. Critically, methods based on the balance of payments identity may capture licit as well as illicit flows, and a method based on macroeconomic trade discrepancies suffers from doubtful assumptions. The most convincing estimate to date demonstrates that individuals hold financial assets worth around ten per cent of global GDP in tax havens. Evidence further indicates that countries in the Global South are more exposed to individuals and multinational enterprises illicitly transferring money out of the country. Further research is warranted on profit shifting out of countries in the Global South and the effectiveness of anti-IFF policies in countries outside Europe and the United States.

Macuane, Jose Jaime, and Carlos Muianga. Natural resources, institutions, and economic transformation in Mozambique. UNU-WIDER, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35188/unu-wider/2020/893-1.

Full text
Abstract:
In the light of Mozambique’s natural resources boom—especially its large-scale investments in mining, oil, and gas—this paper analyses the prospects for the extractive industries to contribute to economic transformation from an institutional perspective. To this purpose, we address the institutional dynamics of the resources sector and consider the underlying causes of the identified outcomes. The National Development Strategy, as the instrument presenting the vision for economic transformation and diversification, is discussed. The paper is based on a desk review—documental and bibliographic—and on primary data gathered by the authors as part of their research into the field of natural resources and the political economy of development. We conclude that, given Mozambique’s political patronage and clientelism, intra-ruling elite competition, limited productive base, weak state capacity, high level of poverty, and recurrent fiscal deficits, the prospects of the current resource boom leading to economic transformation, despite its considerable potential, are at best uncertain.

Abstract:
Lower back pain attributed to the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is prevalent but historically has been frequently underdiagnosed. Even when the SIJ is properly identified as a source of lower back pain, individuals suffering from SIJ dysfunction are often not treated effectively. Improved educational resources for clinicians based on effective evidence-based treatments for SIJ dysfunction are critical in improving the current gap in diagnosis and treatment. Several established and emerging treatments exist for patients with SIJ dysfunction, but prior to this text, no comprehensive resource has existed that addressed management of SIJ dysfunction. This text presents a full and up-to-date review of all the available treatments for SIJ dysfunction, with the aim of providing clinicians with a single comprehensive resource for treatment of their patients.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the main ideas about the use of quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) in the evaluation of health policies. It starts by explaining the theoretical underpinnings of the QALY model understood as individual utilities. Afterward, it reviews the empirical evidence about the descriptive validity of the main assumptions supporting the model. Then, it explains the main preference elicitation techniques (visual analog scale, time trade-off, and standard gamble). It also shows the practical psychological problems faced by these techniques, such as the existence of context-dependent preferences. The chapter ends by explaining how QALYs are used in priority setting, in particular, the rules governing resources allocation decisions using QALYs, the ethical implications of these rules, and the relationship between cost-benefit analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the impact of private and public enforcement of securities regulation on the development of capital markets. After a review of the literature, it considers empirical findings related to private and public enforcement as measured by formal indices and resources, with particular emphasis on the link between enforcement intensity and technical measures of financial market performance. It then analyses the impact of cross-border flows of capital, valuation effects, and cross-listing decisions by corporate issuers before turning to a discussion of whether countries that dedicate more resources to regulatory reform behave differently in some areas of market activities. It also explores the enforcement of banking regulation and its relationship to financial stability and concludes by focusing on direct and indirect, resource-based evidence on the efficacy of the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement actions.

Abstract:
This essay reviews the evolution of US procedures for detecting and investigating crimes and other rule infractions committed by inmates during confinement, their apprehension, determination of guilt, and opportunities for appeal. Special attention is paid to due process considerations and how these procedures have evolved since the inmate rights movement. The importance and effectiveness of disciplinary review boards are discussed. Possible biases in these procedures and inmates’ perceptions of bias are also considered in terms of how they might influence cynicism toward legal authority. An overview of possible sanctions imposed upon determinations of guilt is provided along with discussion of how these sanctions vary across facilities based on crowding and other resource constraints.

Abstract:
This article examines the link between gender and poverty. It begins with a discussion of selected theoretical perspectives that have informed the study of poverty, with emphasis on economic insufficiency, capabilities deprivation, and social exclusion as well as the feminization of poverty. It then considers key contributions to the empirical literature on poverty and gender, focusing on interdisciplinary studies that define poverty based on economic resources. It also reviews selected empirical results from a group of twenty-six high- and middle-income countries, based on data from the Luxembourg Income Study Database. More specifically, it explores the likelihood that women and men live in poor households, and how that likelihood varies by family structure and the strength of their attachment to the labor market. Finally, it explains how the empirical results and the main findings from the literature review contribute to the challenge of evaluating the connection between gender and poverty.

Full text
Abstract:
Pain Management: A Problem-Based Learning Approach provides a comprehensive review of the dynamic and ever-changing field of pain medicine. Its format, based on the American Society of Anesthesiologists model of Problem-Based Learning Discussions, incorporates a vast pool of practical, ABA board-exam-style multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. Each its 46 case-based chapters are accompanied by 20 questions and answers, scrambled and grouped in several real-life practice exams. The cases presented are also unique, as each chapter starts with a case description, usually a compilation of several actual cases; it then branches out through case-based questions, to increasingly complex situations. This structure is designed to create an authentic experience that mirrors that of an oral board examination. The discussion sections that follow offer a comprehensive approach to the chapter’s subject matter, thus creating a modern, complete, and up-to-date medical review of that topic. This book is equally a solid reference compendium of pain management topics and a comprehensive review to assist the general practitioner both in day-to-day practice and during preparation for certification exams. Its problem-based format makes it an ideal resource for the lifelong learner and the modern realities of education.

Abstract:
Evidence-based, prevention-oriented, and community-driven approaches are advocated to improve public health and reduce youth behavior problems, but there are few effective models for doing so. This book advances knowledge about this topic by describing the conditions and actions necessary for effective community-based prevention. The chapters review the ways in which communities can promote readiness to engage in prevention among local stakeholders; build and maintain diverse, well-functioning prevention coalitions; conduct local needs and resource assessments; collectively decide on prevention priorities; select evidence-based interventions that are a good fit with prioritized community needs, resources, and context; and implement evidence-based interventions (EBIs) with fidelity and sustain them over time. The Communities That Care (CTC) prevention system is described in detail to illustrate effective community-based prevention. CTC is a coalition-based prevention system shown to promote healthy youth development and reduce youth behavior problems community wide. It does so by assisting communities to: (1) increase awareness of and support for EBIs; (2) encourage positive interactions between community residents and youth; (3) conduct local needs assessments and collectively decide on priorities to target with EBIs; (4) implement EBIs that are matched to prioritized needs; and (5) ensure that EBIs are coordinated across community organizations, implemented with fidelity, widely disseminated, and evaluated. The book describes the development and evaluation of the CTC system, including how its developers used community-based participatory research to ensure that CTC could be feasibly implemented and employed rigorous research methods to assess the degree to which use of the system reduced adolescent behavior problems.

Abstract:
While traditional drafting books focus on architectural and engineering readers, the thoroughly updated and revised Architectural Drafting for Interior Design, Third Edition, incorporates material and examples that are meaningful to today’s interior designers. Beginning interior designers will learn how to communicate their ideas graphically with a resource that is designed specifically for them. This book addresses their needs by focusing on topics independent of CAD, such as how to draw a floor plan, how to use it to create an interior elevation, and how to understand the relationship between 2D and 3D drawings. Written with NCIDQ, CIDA and NKBA requirements in mind, this book will provide readers with a strong, standards-based foundation in interior design. New to this Edition: - Enhanced and new worksheets - New design and drafting information, including updated visuals and symbols - Emerging technologies such as photogrammetry and 3D printing STUDIO Features: - Study smarter with self-quizzes featuring scored results and personalized study tips - Review concepts with flashcards of essential vocabulary - Download worksheets and their solutions, to practice your drafting skills Instructor Resources: - The Instructor’s Guide provides suggestions for planning the course and using the text in the classroom, supplemental assignments, grading rubrics, and a CIDA Professional Standards Matrix mapped to the chapters in the book - The Test Bank includes sample test questions for each chapter - PowerPoint® presentations include images from the book and provide a framework for lecture and discussion
