Xiahou, Haoling, and 夏侯皓凌. "Auction-based WLAN resource allocation in game theory perspective." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2011. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47869811.

Full text
Abstract:
Surge in WLAN development leads to urgent demand for more efficient bandwidth allocation methods. The bandwidth resource becomes more and more scarce. As a consequence, it demands both revenue maximizing and cost efficient allocation methods. To develop this sort of allocation methods, a dilemma between the target of maximizing service quality (in terms of user revenue) and the target of cost efficient allocation must be resolved. In this thesis, two novel auction-based time-slotted WLAN bandwidth allocation models are established, namely the Combination of Single-slot Second-Price Sealed Auction (CSSA) and the Multi-slot Vickrey Auction versus Homogeneous Objects (MVAH). The two models propose a new approach to the solution of the dilemma: user revenue is formulated by not only its revenue gain or loss related to the access to the bandwidth resource, but also by a series of WLAN transmission factors, including Packet Collision Rate and Minimal Packet Transmission error rate. In the two models, wireless bandwidth is time-slotted and bandwidth users compete for the access to these time slots. Initially, each bandwidth user joins a bidding group which is represented by its bidder. There is only one bandwidth provider in the coverage area of the WLAN. After being assigned virtual credit budget, every bidder bids for arbitrary slot combination in each bidding trial or all slots in one bidding trial, according to the bidding rule of adopted allocation model. Non-cooperative game formulation is thereafter introduced to analyze the revenue of each bidder, revenue of the provider, and revenue of the whole allocation system. Specifically, each bidder’s revenue function is differentiated by its bid; the extreme points of this partial differential equation, i.e., the best bids for the bidder, are computed. The bidding strategy formula for each single bidder is derived from the game formulation under the bidder’s budget limit. Each bidder adjusts its bids to attain the optimal revenue obtained from the bidding strategy formula. The allocation pattern is therefore formed. By means of calculation of the all-bidder revenue to whole system revenue ratio, the system efficiency values for both allocation models are analyzed. Conclusions can be derived from the formula of system efficiency: 1) CSSA benefits about 1 percent higher system efficiency unit than MVAH when only average throughputs of user groups differ. And both models iii- gain optimal system efficiencies when bidder’s average throughput differs 65 times pairwise. 2) The larger the number of users connecting to each bidder, the lower the system efficiency. And CSSA model attains higher system efficiency than MVAH when user numbers of user groups differ more than 3.2 times pairwise. In accordance with the pursuit of maximum system efficiency, new WLANs satisfying both revenue maximizing and cost efficient allocation demands can be established.

Zhao, Jingjing. "Resource allocation for D2D communications based on matching theory." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2017. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/25990.

Full text
Abstract:
Device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying a cellular infrastructure takes advantage of the physical proximity of communicating devices and increasing resource utilisation. However, adopting D2D communications in complex scenarios poses substantial challenges for the resource allocation design. Meanwhile, matching theory has emerged as a promising framework for wireless resource allocation which can overcome some limitations of game theory and optimisation. This thesis focuses on the resource allocation optimisation for D2D communications based on matching theory. First, resource allocation policy is designed for D2D communications underlaying cellular networks. A novel spectrum allocation algorithm based on many-to-many matching is proposed to improve system sum rate. Additionally, considering the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements and priorities of di erent applications, a context-aware resource allocation algorithm based on many-to-one matching is proposed, which is capable of providing remarkable performance enhancement in terms of improved data rate, decreased packet error rate (PER) and reduced delay. Second, to improve resource utilisation, joint subchannel and power allocation problem for D2D communications with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is studied. For the subchannel allocation, a novel algorithm based on the many-to-one matching is proposed for obtaining a suboptimal solution. Since the power allocation problem is non-convex, sequential convex programming is adopted to transform the original power allocation problem to a convex one. The proposed algorithm is shown to enhance the network sum rate and number of accessed users. Third, driven by the trend of heterogeneity of cells, the resource allocation problem for NOMA-enhanced D2D communications in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is investigated. In such a scenario, the proposed resource allocation algorithm is able to closely approach the optimal solution within a limited number of iterations and achieves higher sum rate compared to traditional HetNets schemes. Thorough theoretical analysis is conducted in the development of all proposed algorithms, and performance of proposed algorithm is evaluated via comprehensive simulations. This thesis concludes that matching theory based resource allocation for D2D communications achieves near-optimal performance with acceptable complexity. In addition, the application of D2D communications in NOMA and HetNets can improve system performance in terms of sum rate and users connectivity.

Tsimba, Hilary Mutsawashe. "Queueing based resource allocation in cognitive radio networks." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/66250.

Full text
Abstract:
With the increase in wireless technology devices and mobile users, wireless radio spectrum is coming under strain. Networks are becoming more and more congested and free usable spectrum is running out. This creates a resource allocation problem. The resource, wireless spectrum, needs to be allocated to users in a manner such that it is utilised efficiently and fairly. The objective of this research is to find a solution to the resource allocation problem in radio networks, i.e to increase the efficiency of spectrum utilisation by making maximum use of the spectrum that is currently available through taking advantage of co-existence and exploiting interference limits. The solution proposed entails adding more secondary users (SU) on a cognitive radio network (CRN) and having them transmit simultaneously with the primary user. A typical network layout was defined for the scenario. The interference temperature limit (ITL) was exploited to allow multiple SUs to share capacity. Weighting was applied to the SUs and was based on allowable transmission power under the ITL. Thus a more highly weighted SU will be allowed to transmit at more power. The weighting can be determined by some network-defined rule. Specific models that define the behaviour of the network were then developed using queuing theory, specifically weighted processor sharing techniques. Optimisation was finally applied to the models to maximize system performance. Convex optimization was deployed to minimize the length of the queue through the power allocation ratio. The system was simulated and results for the system performance obtained. Firstly, the performance of the proposed models under the processor-sharing techniques was determined and discussed, with explanations given. Then optimisation was applied to the processor-sharing results and the performance was measured. In addition, the system performance was compared to other existing solutions that were deemed closest to the proposed models.

Chen, Xin. "Adopting emerging integration technologies in organisations." Thesis, Brunel University, 2005. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5159.

Full text
Abstract:
A review of the innovation and diffusion literature indicates a considerable amount of research, where attention is given to a range of features which may support integration technologies adoption. However, some literature suggests that the findings derived from the study of large enterprises cannot be generalised and applied in SMEs due to the distinct characteristics of SMEs. Although the adoption of integration technologies is recognised as being different between large and small companies, the literature on its adoption by SMEs remains limited. Nevertheless, in existing work, there is a lack of studies emphasising the reasons why SMEs and large companies take the decision to adopt integration technologies, focusing specifically on the different factors. This thesis therefore identifies the significant differences in the way that SMEs and large companies approach integration technologies, based on the existing literature, theoretical diffusion theories, and resource-based theory. In doing so, the parameters that can be used to explain the adoption of integration technologies in SMEs and large firms are identified, as nature of organisations, company size, integration needs, adoption factors for SMEs and large organisations, and time. Additionally, adoption factors are found and classified into three categories: adoption factors explicit to SMEs, adoption factors explicit to large organisations, and common factors. Based on this, a conceptual model is introduced to explain the different factors that influence adoption between SMEs and large organisations. The empirical contexts of the research are one project on integration technologies adoption, and four case studies on a large firm and three SMEs, which are analysed using an interpretive and qualitative research approach. The evidence suggests that the empirical data complement the identified dimensions nature of organisations, integration needs, company size and time. The empirical data also confirm that the current integration technologies adoption factors reported in the literature can be classified into common factors, factors explicit to SMEs, and factors explicit to large firms, to support a more comprehensive view of this area. An additional factor perceived future prospect has been considered as an influence on adoption in large organisations. The findings of this research can be useful to guide analysts and researchers in determining critical aspects of the complex issues involved for integration technologies adoption, and lead to suggestions for further valid research.

Onur, Ozgur Deniz. "Optimal Video Adaptation For Resource Constrained Mobile Devices Based On Utility Theory." Master's thesis, METU, 2003. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/1124148/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a novel system to determine the best representation of a video in the sense that, a user watching the video reaches the highest level of satisfaction possible, given the resource capabilities of the viewing device. Utility theory is used to obtain a utility function representing the user satisfaction as a function of video coding parameters, and the viewing device capabilities. The utility function is formulated as the weighted sum of three individual components. These components are chosen such that, the satisfaction on any one of the components is independent of the satisfaction on every other component. The advantage of such decomposition is the ability to express individual components as simple mathematical relations, modeling user satisfaction. Afterwards, the unknown parameters of these models are determined by results of subjective tests, performed by a multitude of users. Finally, simulated annealing is utilized to find the global optimum of this utility function representing the user satisfaction. Simulation results based on subjective viewing tests on a resource limited mobile device indicate a consistent user satisfaction by the determined optimal encoding parameters of the video.

Davies, Tony. "Sourcing strategies and competitive advantage : an empirical analysis utilising resource based theory." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2012. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6104/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with establishing whether particular sourcing strategies lead to the achievement of sustainable competitive advantage, and the affect that the type of power relationships have on the situation. The theoretical framework for the study was grounded in the resource-based view. A survey was undertaken of twelve sourcing strategies within six organisations. The organisations varied in size and were from different industries. Furthermore, the sourcing strategies comprised six reactive and six proactive approaches and exhibited a varied mix of different power relationships. This enabled a thorough examination of the variables to be carried out. Three critical cases were then analysed in greater depth in order to investigate some of the contextual factors and second-order findings that were uncovered during the survey. The study found that proactive sourcing strategies may lead to sustainable competitive advantage, particularly when combined with buyer dominant or interdependent power relationships, but reactive approaches do not. However, a number of intervening variables were identified that also appear to influence the situation, such as the nature of the purchase, the objective of the sourcing strategy, and the degree of commitment to and investment in the sourcing strategy. A model is developed which explains the relationship between sourcing strategies and sustainable competitive advantage.

Li, Hao. "Banking theory based distributed resource management and scheduling for hybrid cloud computing." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2013. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/23544/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cloud computing is a computing model in which the network offers a dynamically scalable service based on virtualized resources. The resources in the cloud environment are heterogeneous and geographically distributed. The user does not need to know how to manage those who support the cloud computing infrastructure. From the view of cloud computing, all hardware, software and networks are resources. All of the resources are dynamically scalable on demand. It can offer a complete service for the user even when these service resources are geographically distributed. The user pays for only what they use (pay-per-use). Meanwhile, the transaction environment will decide how to manage resource usage and cost, because all of the transactions have to follow the rule of the market. How to manage and schedule resources effectively becomes a very important part of cloud computing, and how to setup a new framework to offer a reliable, safe and executable service are very important issues. The approach herein is a new contribution to cloud computing. It not only proposes a hybrid cloud computing model based on banking theory to manage transactions among all participants in the hybrid cloud computing environment, but also proposes a "Cloud Bank" framework to support all the related issues. There are some of technology and theory been used to offer contributions as below: 1. This thesis presents an Optimal Deposit-loan Ratio Theory to adjust the pricing between the resource provider and resource consumer to realize both benefit maximization and cloud service optimization for all participants. 2. It also offers a new pricing schema using Centralized Synchronous Algorithm and Distributed Price Adjustment Algorithm to control all lifecycles and dynamically price all resources. 3. Normally, commercial banks apply four factors mitigation and to predict the risk: Probability of Default, Loss Given Default, Exposure at Default and Maturity. This thesis applies Probability of Default model of credit risk to forecast the safety supply of the resource. The Logistic Regression Model been used to control some factors in resource allocation. At the same time, the thesis uses Multivariate Statistical analysis to predict risk. 4. The Cloud Bank model applies an improved Pareto Optimality Algorithm to build its own scheduling system. 5. In order to archive the above purpose, this thesis proposes a new QoS-based SLA-CBSAL to describe all the physical resource and the processing of thread. In order to support all the related algorithms and theories, the thesis uses the CloudSim simulation tools give a test result to support some of the Cloud Bank management strategies and algorithms. The experiment shows us that the Cloud Bank Model is a new possible solution for hybrid cloud computing. For future research direction, the author will focus on building real hybrid cloud computing and simulate actual user behaviour in a real environment, and continue to modify and improve the feasibility and effectiveness of the project. For the risk mitigation and prediction, the risks can be divided into the four categories: credit risk, liquidity risk, operational risk, and other risks. Although this thesis uses credit risk and liquidity risk research, in a real trading environment operational risks and other risks exist. Only through improvements to the designation of all risk types of analysis and strategy can our Cloud Bank be considered relatively complete.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite growing interest in sustainable operations and supply management (SOSM) from both academics and practitioners, literature examining the area remains fragmented. This thesis presents the findings of a study investigating the influence of exogenous pressures and endogenous capability-building, independently and interactively, on sustainable operations and supply management practice adoption. Exogenous pressures, such as regulation and consumer demands, may influence the decision to adopt specific SOSM practices. For example, within the fashion industry, media exposés have heightened consumer awareness of unethical practices creating pressure for fashion retailers to address these concerns within their supply chains more fully. Endogenous pressures, in this case relating to capability-building, may also influence the SOSM practices that organisations choose to adopt, such as the implementation of recycling strategies or energy efficiency initiatives which can reduce both the cost and environmental impact of the focal organisation.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the challenges of modern organizations in their efforts of designing relevant project governance systems. To address the challenge the paper proposes using resource-based view on project-based organizations in order to evaluate and identify key governance resources. Given that prevailing rational and standardized models in project-related literature provide organizations with homogeneous resource-base, this paper invites attention to those resources, which have the potential to deliver unique character to the organizations. The thesis first discusses the relevance of exploring projects as governance resources at project-based organizations, next screens the projects through VRIO framework of resource-based theory. Derived intangible resources and organizational resources are further explored at a case study organization. The findings are analysed through complex adaptive systems theory, where intrinsic motivations appear as sources for emerging project governance systems, while principal trust serves as a resource for self-organization of projects and project governance unit.

Abstract:
Nowadays, Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) are becoming larger and implement more complex functions. Therefore, technologies that are currently used to implement these functions, like hardware platforms and communication protocols might soon become unusable due to the lack of resources. The industry is trying to adopt new technologies that will allow these functionalities to be developed without an increase in the size of the equipment, or of the development costs. To enumerate some of these technologies: virtualization, multi-core technologies are the ones that show the biggest potential. Because these technologies are not mature, research has to be done in order to fully maximize their potential. Another technology that is highly used by the industry is the Ethernet communication protocol. It presents some advantages, but due to the non-real-time nature of the applications that it was designed for, it has to be extended in order to be used in real-time applications. The objective of this thesis work is to model an Ethernet network comprised of software partitions so that it can provide timing guarantees for the traffic that traverses the network. A Response Time Analysis for real-time flows over such networks is proposed. The model and the RTA are evaluated by experiments.

Sharma, Varinder M. (Varinder Mohan). "Development and Testing of a Resource-Based Theory of International Entry Mode Choice." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1995. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc279389/.

Full text
Abstract:
A firm can deploy a variety of arrangements (entry modes) like wholly owned subsidiaries, joint ventures, contracts, and export modes to implement its product market strategies in foreign countries. Each of these arrangements entails decisions about the location of production facilities and/or marketing operations, and the type of ownership of these operations. The choice of an entry mode is of strategic importance to a firm because it can involve investment of substantial amount of resources and has a strong bearing on the firm's marketing mix. Due to its strategic importance, the entry mode choice phenomenon has been extensively researched. In the past, seven major theories have been proposed but none is able to explain the choice from the complete set of entry modes. Thus, there exists a gap between the theory and practice of entry mode choice. This study provides breakthrough on two fronts. First, it develops a new theory of entry mode choice grounded in the resource-based perspective of the firm. The theory posits that the decision to locate its production and/or marketing operations in a country is related to the actualizability of the firm's competitive advantage in that country. However, the ownership decision is related to the sustainability of that advantage. Second, based on this theory, a model is developed which explains entry mode choices from the complete set of entry modes. Mail survey responses of Presidents/CEOs of 163 American firms with international operations support the model. The proposed framework is an effort to fill the gap between theory and practice of entry mode choice. It is expected to make a substantial contribution toward developing a sound theory of international operations of the firm. The framework is broader in scope than the extant theories because it transcends across industries and nationalities of firms.

Gray, Dina. "A multi method investigation into the costs and into the benefits of measuring intellectual capital assets." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/3561.

Full text
Abstract:
This study sets out to address the question of whether the costs and the benefits of measuring intellectual capital assets differ depending on the driver for that measure. Although pressure is growing on firms to measure and report on their intellectual capital assets no research has yet been published that questions the costs associated with such actions. And although academic research has purported to show links between the management of intellectual capital assets and real business benefits the research carried out thus far'has not focussed specifically on the benefits of measuring intellectual capital assets. Although there are now a variety of intellectual capital asset measurement frameworks there has been no cross comparison as to which intellectual capital asset measures provide the most business insight or where the outcome of that measurement is most effective. Using a multi method approach the thesis is tested in three phases; an extensive literature review covering intellectual capital, performance measurement and organisational effectiveness; a survey and content analysis to explore what and why companies measure; and structured interviewing of six companies to investigate the costs and the benefits of measurement. The thesis is tested through the investigation of thirteen propositions which show that: firstly, there is a difference in the relative cost of measuring intellectual capital assets given the measurement driver, which is explained by the frequency of measurement, the mode of data collection and analysis, and whether the use of the measure is a by product of some other driver, secondly, that the insight provided by an intellectual capital asset measure differs given the measurement driver, thirdly, that the measurement of intellectual capital assets is most effective for planning the future; and lastly, that particular measurement drivers are effective, to differing degrees, in financial, customer, operational, people and future organisational performance domains.

Abstract:
Present theories of retail strategic planning and retail evolution are unsatisfactory in explaining the dynamics of retail competition. Strategic planning procedure, it is argued, follows models such as the product-mission matrix and the generic strategy. However, these theories are limited to the corporate level and do not model either the complex market situations influencing the retail industry is getting complicated, the studies of retail development need a theory to explain both retail strategic analysis and planning and the dynamics of retail competition. Theories of retail evolution, or theories of the retail institutional change, e.g. the wheel or retailing, the retail accordion theory and the retail life cycle, are more appropriate for capturing the dynamics of retail competition. These theories of retail organisational, or format, change have been developed to model the retail development in Western countries but may be not suitable for explaining retail development in Western countries but may be not suitable for explaining retail development in Western countries but may be not suitable for explaining retail development in other countries, e.g., East Asian countries. An example of these East Asian countries is Taiwan. Since the 1970s, modern retail formats, such as the large-scale department store, the supermarket, the convenience store and the hypermarket, have transformed Taiwanese’ shopping behaviour and retail operation. However, there are few English language studies related to the changes and performance of the retail industry in this market. Resource-Advantage theory proposed by Hunt may offer an alternative framework of retail competition analysis, especially in non-Western societies. Thus this research has three main purposes: 1). To explore the applicability of Resource-Advantage theory to explaining retail competition and development; 2). To provide empirical evidence for Resource-Advantage theory; 3). To provide detail analyses of the convenience store development in Taiwan.

Abstract:
Exporting is a critically important strategy for firms to grow, yet research in this area has tended to ignore how firms can leverage resource-based capabilities to improve export performance. Building on the resource-based view and institutional theory, the authors develop a novel perspective to explain how a firm can improve export performance by aligning its export channel with its level of market orientation capabilities, contingent on the institutional distance between home and export markets. Using a unique database of Chinese exporters, the authors find that exporters with strong market orientation capabilities prefer hierarchical export channels, while those with weak market orientation capabilities prefer hybrid channels. The analysis also indicates that the institutional distance between China and the export market moderates this relation. Moreover, the authors find that aligning export channel choice with firm-level market orientation capabilities and institutional distance yields better export performance. (authors' abstract)

Abstract:
Title: Profitable CSR: Are intangible assets necessary to earn money on CSR? Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Anita Johansson and Rikard Andersson Supervisor: Jan Svanberg Date:  2018 – may Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether intangible assets constitute the missing link in the bidirectional relationship between CSP and CFP. The aim was also to investigate if the growth phase affects the strength of the relationship. Method: The study assumes a positivistic research philosophy with a hypothetical-deductible approach. Secondary data have been collected from the database Thomson Reuters. Time perspective that has been used is called longitudinal design using data from eleven years and this data has been analyzed in SPSS. Result & Conclusions: The result provides evidence that intangible assets act as a partial mediator of the positive bidirectional relationship between CSP and CFP. However, the impact of intangible assets in the bidirectional relationship between CSP and CFP depending on growth phase does not show any evident result and cannot be established. Contribution of the thesis: The study provides proof that there is a mediating effect from the intangible assets of the bidirectional relationship between CSP and CFP. Even though our result of growth as a variable is not strengthened, this can be the basis for further research and, in spite of everything, has contributed to more knowledge. Our results contribute to the theoretical knowledge that future research can build on while corporate executives can invest in intangible assets while achieving financial goals. Suggestions for future research: One suggestion for future research is to include private companies who are missing public sustainable reporting. If another selection is included, it can make the result more justified. Since our study did not bring an evident result about the impact of the growth phase it would have been interesting if further research could be a comparative study. Since it takes time to build up intangible assets a comparison between the same companies during a period of high growth to a period of stagnant growth, could show a more evident result of the impact of the intangible assets.

Resource use and distribution must take advantage of scientific and technical knowledge to improving of the resource level, face on different types of resources to different levels of utilization, must take into account the regional configuration and utilization. However, the amount of resources caused by the difference between the results of university allocation process should seek to reduce inequalities of resource allocation, unfair and improper to promote the balanced development of the school. The principle of balancing fairness and efficiency, the most rational distribution of resources, reduce waste caused by the improper investment, the gap between the region to reach the goal of balanced regional development of education, and the fierce competition of higher education, universities, effective to use resources and proper planning of the integration to sustainable development. Abstract As a result of environment fast vicissitude, enterprise''s information exchange becomes more and more frequently. This is the so-called supply chain relations now. Specialization and globalization information linkage need enterprise''s information to transmis and share more quickly on supply chain. By the assistance of information technology, IT can let the entity disperse to communicate with each other. Further, the assistance of information technology brings more benefit to the firms on supply chain, such as largely reducing the production cost, cutting down the product life cycle and faster responding the customers’demand. But different firms have different ideas of use of information technology, so they get different results. Therefore, that SCM system utilization affects performance for suppliers and buyers is a worth discussing issue on supply chain. In addition, the enterprise''s role on supply chain is changing from the independent individual to coordination. Information sharing between firms plays an important role of supply chain integration and cooperation. If the firms share too much information, IT will cause the firms to lose bargain power. If the information is not willing to share, then performance of supply chain integration will be bad. Therefore, this research will discuss that information sharing is how to affect the performance of supplier and buyers on SCM system utilization. In this research, we choose two suppliers and two buyers as our target firms. Two firms are IC industry and the others are motorcycle industry. This study is based on resource based theory to explore the performance of supplilers and buyers when they are under different IT resource patterns and on SCM system utilization.

Previous research has been mostly examined competitive advantage based on resource-based theory and resource dependence theory. However, the relationship between the two theories has not been really understood. To fill this gap, this study grounded on a single and longitudinal case study and drew on the concept of evolution to interpret how the Soap Berry Biotech Company effectively used internal core resources and depended on external relational resources over time. For theoretical contribution, we argue that a firm can follow the process of evolution of internal core resources and external relational resources to create competitive advantage. In addition, we address that the interaction of the two types of resources is a regular and cyclic evolution process. For practical contribution, this study suggests a firm should secure and integrate a variety of resources from not only industry but academia and government for value creation.

This research infers the relationships between core resources and growth strategy of the firms. When the core resources of the firms were financial assets, the firms would trend to grow low- related businesses, and adopt external-growth mode. When the core resources of the firms were organizational competenices, the firms would trend to grow high-related businesses, and adopt internal-growth mode. When the core resources of the firms were physical assets or intangible assets or personal competenices, the firms would trend to grow middle-related businesses, and adopt mix-growth mode. The research advocates the traits of core resources, the tacitness and the non-tradeability, will more concrete to explain the relationships between resources and growth of the firms. Namely, when the traits of core resources of the firms were high tacitness and non-tradeability, the firms would trend to grow high-related businesses, and adopt internal- growth mode. When the traits of core resources of the firms were low tacitness and non-tradeability, the firms would trend to grow low-related businesses, and adopt external- growth mode. When the traits of core resources of the firms were the others, the firms would trend to grow middle- related businesses, and adopt mix-growth mode. New information technologies are being developed everyday in the world. Enterprises are trying to keep their competition advantages by holding right information and make quick response. According to the resource based theory, it is developed to explain how enterprises relate to their goal by defining enterprises as a collection or bundle of resources. Small and medium enterprises play an important role in Taiwan industry. The characteristic of the small and medium enterprise are flexible and quick response. In this research, we using resource based theory to build one enterprise information portal (EIP) architecture and set up one new way to develop the extensible markup language (XML) format so that make data exchange between different systems easier. After building an enterprise information portal, we compared different portal architecture, we hope this architecture can provide small and medium another perspective for choosing the style of the architecture. In this research, we use representation state transfer (REST) to build an enterprise information portal. REST strictly refers to a collection of network architecture principles which outline how resources are defined and addressed. It is a style of software architecture for distributed hypermedia systems. We first introduced the background of the EIP project, and then we do system requirement and analysis. We build a prototype of the enterprise information portal and combined it with the service-oriented architecture. After finish the design of the architecture, we started to construct the portals. We use Ruby on Rains 2.0 to help us use Ruby to code, because Ruby is designed for REST use. After the portal completed, we provided the guideline of the portals and do some test to make sure every function is worked fine. After we developed the portal, we discussed some management issue for enterprise strategy. From cost, business process and strategy layer, we concludes that the REST style portal is quickly and ease to construct, and we also realize the difference between the REST style architecture and other software application like SOAP from different using, url link and XML output. These compares make REST became a quick and ease for design. These benefits are very suit to the small and medium enterprise. And in the case of Children Innovative Knowledge for Children Industries project, we also proof that it can be developed.

A resource-based theory perspective addresses that a firm can leverage the performance impact of existing resources through resource configuration, complementarities, and integration; however little empirical research extends these issues. This study investigates the effects on performance of human resource capability, information technology capability, marketing knowledge capability and their complementarities. Results from multiple hierarchical/interaction regressions analyses (with two controls) showed: 1) three main effects positively impact on performance; 2) their two-interaction effect is statistical significance on their performance, which supports the study purpose of capability complementarities. Our research suggests that firm resources can be considered as complementarities when one resource enhances the value and effect of another resource, and thus including complementarity of these capabilities will lead to be better accurate prediction of its performance.

With changeable environment, competition in business is intense. Hence, it is hard for businesses to analyze and control external environment. However, businesses can get control of internal resource and capability, so they pay attention to the point from external environment to internal condition as they make strategies. Resource-Based Theory emphasizes the importance of internal resource and discusses the issues, how do businesses develop and use resource in order to get competitive advantages. This study makes use of literature review and interview to make case-study. First, we use McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Mos Burger (MOS) experiences and related second resources to diagnose internal disadvantages and external crisis through forces Analysis. Then, from the view of resource-based theory to discuss how do those businesses use resources so as to advance their ability. This study finds out that competitive advantages of McDonalds comes from the leader competitive advantages of KFC comes from signing many contracts with factories and competitive advantages of MOS comes from the innovation of internal management. Through generalizing analyzing, this research proposes trend of development and advantages about domestic fast-food industry for domestic McDonalds, KFC and MOS.

Owing to the changes of educational environment, the competition of universities and colleges is facing with challenge. Therefore, this study, on resource basic theory, aims to explore how the universities and colleges in Taiwan can use their limited resources to promote their competition to environment factories. The universities and colleges must actively adjust their inner limited resources to face the challenge from outdoors factories, or they will meet the strict difficulty of operating and even the risk of bankrupt. The Educational Ministry is approaching to amend “private school laws” for the choice of closing down. Because of the changes of environment factories: the reduce of birthrate, the rapid increase of new universities and colleges, the entrance of WTO allowing abroad universities and colleges to set up in Taiwan, for the sake of eternal earning, they have to face the outdoors challenge, in the same time promote their own competition power. This study takes C.C. Technology College for example. For eternal exist, it has enforced on the following policies: 1. to improve the level of teachers and administers, 2. to promote the service of administration, 3. to offer better soft and hard equipments, 4.to raise teaching quality and encourage students actively to attend the world or national contests, 5.to promote school image, 6.rapidly to explore school visible to enterprises and let its own graduates be the favorite employees of enterprises; thus, be able to attract more persons enter C.C. The national education level of Taiwan has continued to rise, national has heightened their consideration of health and the need of medical treatment. After the implementation of National Health Insurance(NHI), medical level upgrade gradually which make hospital normalized. But the medical institutions compete closely, medical treatment not only lie on medicine and medical order but also supplementary of medical appliances so that the whole doctor-patient relationship can be more completed. However, Ministry of Health and Welfare started to implement global budget payment system to cut down the expense of National Health Insurance. Decreased of National Health Insurance revenue and the highly competitive between medical institutions, and still the medical institutions need to use part of the budget to renew old and buy new medical appliances regularly because of medical appliances are important devices which can improve doctor-patience relationship, and medical appliances keep advancing all the time so the choices became even higher. How to use limited resources to get the use right of medical appliances and effectively reduce hospital’s costs to satisfy every department’s need and help doctors treat patience to improve safety and health care quality, so that medical institutions which are under highly competitive environment and are not easy to increase profits’ situation, by strategic method of purchasing medical appliances to create advantage to maintain medical level and quality so that medical institutions can survive and increase competitiveness. This research will use irreplaceability, heterogeneity of resource and institutional isomorphism to explore purchase of medical appliances in the hospital.

Abstract:
Firms form marketing and technology alliances to access other firms’ resources, and these alliances act as signals to investors. Investors use these signals to adjust expectations about new venture performance prospects, but our understanding of investor responses is incomplete because limited research examines them as a function of factors other than the alliance announcements. To better understand alliances as signals, we must incorporate factors influencing the resources alliances make available. Thus, my research question is as follows: To what extent do partner firm, focal firm, and alliance characteristics provide signals to investors about the resources alliances make accessible? My theory integrates signaling theory and resource-based theory on strategic alliances, and an event study is used to analyze investor responses to alliances formed by high technology new ventures recently having undergone initial public offerings. The findings provide evidence both in support and in contradiction to signaling theory and resource-based theory on strategic alliances. For example, signaling theory logic suggests both that the visibility and prestige of large partners and that the uncertainty associated with small and young firms enhance the strength of signals associated with alliance announcements. In this study, there is no support for the former hypotheses and limited support for the latter. Moreover, although both perspectives suggest that the new venture’s alliance experience increases investor responses, such effects were not found. There was some evidence to support the signaling theory argument that signal consistency strengthens responses. Specifically, investors respond favorably to marketing alliances when the new ventures’ alliance partners have strong commercial resources (many new products per year). There is also evidence that investors respond to the possibility of resource complementarity, contingent on which firm has the resources that complement the alliance. For instance, investors value marketing alliances when new ventures have strong R&D resources. In technology alliances, investors may respond more favorably when new ventures have strong commercial resources (high advertising intensity), but may respond negatively when partners have such resources. In sum, this study provides some support for signaling theory and resource-based theory on strategic alliances, but also provides null results that are inconsistent with either.

Abstract Currently, most of the electronics industry growth is resulted from smart mobile devices. This trend allows the semiconductor industry to continue grow in the post-PC era. The semiconductor industry supply chain, however, is continuing to evolve. Companies must watch the evolution of horizontal collaboration and vertical integration in the industry, understand their own strength and resources, and make relevant change(s) to maintain a competitive edge. This study is based on the resource-based theory to understand the integration trend in the semiconductor industry. First, the theory of double helix is used to analyze the industry evolution from the personal computer(PC) to the smart device. The semiconductor industry has developed with technology development following the famous Moore’s Law and with a new trend in Moore-than-Moore technology development. We observed complex relationship and trend of integration among companies through the semiconductor supply. Based on resource-based theory, we studies the integration of foundry semiconductor company with her upstream and downstream companies in the semiconductor supply chain. From closer integration between enterprises, companies can obtain a greater competitive advantage to face contestants from some of the best companies around the world. For the case study, we used CMOS image sensors as an example. A foundry company and two partner companies integrated their manufacturing processes to service the customer(IC design company). They successfully launched competitive products and sustained the competitive advantage to become one of the leading group in the CMOS image sensor industry. Careful analysis of the integration of the three companies shows that the competitive advantage not only resulted from tangible assets and resources and, more importantly, from intangible assets and resources, such as patents, trade secrets, database, and business reputation. Talented people with good personal skills are also critical for such industry integration. These people may have innovation and technical ability, management capability, and interpersonal network that are relevant to the specific industry. Of course, excellent organization culture is indispensable. Having the culture is very important to achieve good integration efficiency. Organizational culture is an implicit capability of the company, and will not change with personal changes. Such, integration and formation of the competitive advantage will be lasting and continue to make new progress. While holding the strategic resources of value, rareness and inimitability, the resource-based theory (RBT) has been conducted, based on resource heterogeneities, that effectively evaluate service resource and their interactions can help firms improve their competitive advantage and better performance. The purpose of this study is to expand and better the understanding of a natural phenomenon of customer service relationship performance in financial banking industry, namely the effect of the information and marketing service resources and their interactions on the performance. To reach this goal, we carry out an empirical study by some statistical tools as having a multiple interaction regression approach to structural equation modeling (SEM) to attain significant results which were consistent with the performance predictions but we moved beyond previous studies, offering new findings and insights. Our findings suggest that evaluations of bank service resources that include people, information, and marketing knowledge and their 3-way interactions will lead to a better prediction of the relationship performance, allowing them to match with this changing and dynamic business environment.

The study discovers the efficiency of how golf range is operated and understands how golf ranges effectively use of its resources. This study is based on Verdin and Williamson’s (1992) resource based theory of competitive advantage, competitive advantages in the golf range are divided into five main categories/criteria. Through AHP analysis it showed that the key success factors on operating a golf range is mainly based on the relationship of its consumers, good management of the high-profile customers, good reputation and low service charges will increase long-term customer loyalty and boost the market share of the golf range. Another interesting result also pointed out the good relationship with golf-related industries or forming alliances will increase consumer spending at the golf range, which may possible enhance the efficiency of the operating management for the golf range. Finally, based on the conclusions and recommendations provided from the managers or operators, we concluded the importance or attention for operating a golf range, and follow by future direction of operating a golf range.

Professional virtual communities (PVC) are place where people with common interests share knowledge of specific domain on the Internet. The objective of PVC encourages members to get or share knowledge through the websites. Recently, Knowledge assets .are important assets to effects the successful of PVC and related to the growth of community. However, the members intention to continue using the PVC as determinant of the PVC success. While initial use (adoption) of the PVC is the important first step toward realizing PVC success, an eventual PVC success further depends on its continued use or continuance after initial use. In order to make initial users to change continue users that it must be add the knowledge assets. According to literature review, this study indicated knowledge assets to classify with four assets. (1)human assets such as expert and to accumulate members’ knowledge,(2)technical assets such as shareable technical platforms and functional support,(3)complementary assets such as reputation, rules, an appropriate culture encourages human to share knowledge within a community,(4)relational assets such as interpersonal relationships. The resource based theory(RBT) provides a theoretical basis for linking knowledge assets and community success, and explain how community continue use resides more in those assets to leverage website than in the technology itself. The social capital theory (SCT) provides a theoretical basis for explaining interpersonal relationship build and became relational assets. This study integrated resource based theory and social capital theory to propose the model for PVC members’ satisfaction and continuance intention. The results finding that technical assets, complementary assets and human assets positive related of PVC members’ satisfaction and indirect influence members’ intention of continuance use. Relational assets positively related of PVC members’ intention for continuing use. Some implications for practice and research are identified.

Like human, a company experiences many different growth stages from establishment to prosperity. The resources accumulated and cultivated during growth process are important for the future development and competitiveness for the business, serving as the essential basis for business strategy management. Case study was adopted in this study and resource-based theory was used to analyze the resource accumulated during different life stages since the infancy of a domestic human resource agency. The five test critiria proposed by Collis & Montgomery, inimitability, durability, appropriability, substitutability and competitive superiority, were applied to evaluate the value of resource accumulated in each life stage for the case company. In-depth interviews were conducted to gain understanding about the milestones of the case company since its establishment, including its focus on electronic industry, the entrance into dormitory management field, and the opportunity of expansion from foreign labor import to human dispatch etc. The study further analyzed the important resources accumulated since the establishment of the case company, including management of large dormitory, a central kitchen, advantages as the first service provider in electronic industry, service charge by installment, pioneer in the e-service and tax refund system for foreign labors, webcam-interviews, integration of foreign labor and dispatch sectors, brand and reputation, the number of professional certificates, customer royalty, service locations around the country, benchmarking, thoughtfulness, dedication to services and expertises. As a whole, most of the resources of case company are highly valuable, especially the large dormitory, expertises and customer royalty which are of inimitability and competitive superiority. Among its resources, the value of “service charge by installment” has been compromised due to the authority regulation enforcing divided service charge payment for all agencies. On the basis of above analysis, a strategic recommendation was suggested by this research accordingly.
