The article presents a clinical case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis complicated by a viral infection in a 72-year-old woman. The introductory part provides a concise literature review on the etiology, classification, frequency, and possible complications of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. The patient’s computed tomography (CT) lung scan showed bilateral interstitial lesions. The patient was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis based on the clinical manifestations and radiological findings. The autopsy revealed morphological signs of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (obliterative bronchiolit

Differentiation between abacavir hypersensitivity and viral respiratory infections is problematic. Fifteen cases of abacavir hypersensitivity were matched to 30 controls with culture proven influenza A with no abacavir exposure. Rash was associated with hypersensitivity (odds ratio [OR] = 13.1, P = 0.02) as was the presence of nausea (OR = 30, P < 0.001), vomiting (OR = 17.1, P = 0.001) or diarrhoea (OR = 22, P < 0.001). The number of gastrointestinal symptoms was also predictive of hypersensitivity reaction ( P < 0.001). Respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, or dyspnoea) were not

Abstract Purpose An adverse drug reaction associated with the use of prasugrel for dual antiplatelet therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent placement is reported. Summary About one week after starting prasugrel use following angioplasty and a stent revision procedure, a 61-year-old woman arrived in the emergency department with wheezing, shortness of breath, a feeling of throat closure, and a widespread erythematous, maculopapular, pruritic rash. Abstract Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection may be associated with the development of asthma and atopy. The aim of the present study was to investigate this association and the related immunological mechanisms. Seventy-six children admitted to Oulu University Hospital in 1991–1994 for an RSV infection at an age of less than 12 months and healthy controls were called for a visit at the age of 6–10 years. Twenty subjects (26%) had asthma compared with 12 controls (16%) (difference 11%, 95% confidence interval (CI) –3% to 24%). Asthma had been diagnosed significantly earlier in the subj
