Abstract:
Combinations of tissues from Xenopus blastulae have been used to identify several mechanisms that limit the number of animal cells forming muscle after induction by vegetal cells. The results disagree with a model in which direct physical contact or very close proximity between animal and vegetal cells restricts the number of cells that receive the inductive signal. Rather it seems that a diffusible inducer is released by vegetal cells, and spreads through 4–8 animal cell diameters, equivalent to a distance of 80 microns, from the nearest vegetal cells. Several factors seem to cooperate to pre

This study investigated the role of tolerance induction in an inflammatory setting in regard to the early growth response genes Egr2 and Egr3. T cells robustly respond to pathogenic antigens during infection, but are tolerant to stimulation by self-antigens. The intrinsic mechanisms for self-tolerance in the periphery are still not clear. Egr2 and 3 are induced in tolerant T cells in response to antigen stimulation by NFAT-medicated tolerant signalling; however, their function in tolerant T cells is still unknown. The study demonstrated that Egr2 and 3, induced in tolerant T cells, are not dir

Oxidative damage to DNA and proteins contributes to mutation and cancer risk. A further source of DNA and protein damage is glycation by reactive endogenous dicarbonyls - particularly methylglyoxal and glyoxal. Cellular protection against oxidative damage involves up regulation of enzymes controlled transcriptionally by transcription factor nrf2 interacting with an antioxidant response element (ARE) in the promoter. Dietary isothiocyanates (ITCs) enhanced enzymatic components of the antioxidant defence by increasing the ARE-linked gene expression. This may also increase protection against dica

The local and systemic immune response to rotavirus was investigated, both in previously exposed adult sheep and gnotobiotic lambs. Vaccines composed of rotavirus or recombinant VP6 mixed with or incorporated into ISCOMs were used to examine if one oral dose could induce a mucosal immune response and protection against subsequent challenge. Gnotobiotic lambs were vaccinated orally either with PBS/ISC, inactivated rotavirus (IRV)/ISC, recombinant VP6/ISC, or IRV alone, challenged 3 weeks later with a live virulent lamb strain, and killed 8-9 days after challenge. Abstract Many engineering problems still require novel solutions, e.g., the repurposing of retired wind-turbine blades. Increasing evidence suggests that the recall of episodic memories enhances idea generation, but its application to engineering problems has been limited. The current work investigates the effectiveness of a memory induction on generating ideas. Engineering undergraduate students in a fourth-year design course (N = 38) completed a study under both of two conditions, a memory induction and a control (non-episodic-memory) induction. Participants underwent the induction before ge

Purpose/Background Direct laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation after induction of anesthesia can cause a reflex sympathetic surge of catecholamines caused by airway stimulation. This may cause hypertension, tachycardia, and arrhythmias. This reflex can be detrimental in patients with poor cardiac reserve and can be poorly tolerated and lead to adverse events such as myocardial ischemia. Fentanyl, a potent opioid, with a rapid onset and short duration of action is given during induction to block the sympathetic response.
